The idea of Ray and Adam hanging out together and going to Staten Island was hilarious. And the low-class Staten Island girl who tells Ray off perfectly captures how people from the better parts of the city think Staten Islanders are like (and they aren’t too far off the mark).

1. Hannah gets a deal to write an e-book, and is so excited she literally barfs. She runs into writer’s block, but seems to have overcome that near the end.
2. Ray goes to Adam’s apartment to retrieve a book of his that Hannah had left there. Adam enlists Ray’s help to return a dog that Adam had taken when the owner had left it tied up outside a coffee shop. During their trip to Staten Island (how HBO got permission to film at the ferry terminal during the day, I can’t imagine), the two of them seem to be becoming good friends, but then they get into an argument over Hannah – which makes it clear that Adam still wants Hannah – and Adam storms off. Ray tries to return the dog to the owner’s incredibly prole daughter but she doesn’t want it back. Ray ends up keeping the dog.
3. Marnie is in bed with Booth the short artist when his Hapa-looking assistant comes into the bedroom to discuss the party he’s throwing that night. He gets into an argument with the assistant over her taking some of his ice cream and she quits. Booth then asks Marnie to be the party hostess. After the party he offers her money, and it becomes clear that he considered her more of an employee than a girlfriend. It’s clear that Booth is an angry cynical schmuck, but Marnie is heartbroken.
4. It becomes clear that Hannah and Marnie’s friendship is rapidly disappearing, not over a specific thing, but the two just don’t connect anymore.
5. Shoshanna and Jessa have minor parts this episode. Shoshanna tries to get Ray to attend an “entrepreneur workshop” at the Learning Annex featuring Donald Trump. Ray isn’t interested. Jessa is staying with Hannah, and thinks that Hannah is depressed.

It probably grosses over $1 million per year. It’s not a loser job, though the writers of the show apparently think it is.

The average, under accomplished male of today is living in a golden age. In the past these guys would be living in slums, working in factories and only getting female attention or sex from their ugly cold wives.
What has changed is the expectation level and sense of entitlement among omega/lower beta males.

So the young, beautiful Marnie thought that older douche Booth was her boyfriend but he didn’t feel the same way. The guy is such a tool that he slaps Marnie’s phone out of her hand while she reads a text from Hannah and criticises their friendship. Then as she tries to explain, he tells her he doesn’t care and means it. He doesn’t cover his nakedness when his assistant walks in on them in bed. Plus he had banged his assistant at some point (who has a boyfriend) but still got angry at her for eating one scoop of his rosewater-flavoured ice cream. And Marnie prefers to be with this guy than with a guy who worships her.
Men who look like Booth don’t act this way in front of girls that look like Marnie. All push, no pull. Girls like Hannah/Lena may experience this kind of behaviour and tolerate it because they know nothing better. It is how hot men get rid of 6′s.
Lena Dunham doesn’t know what it is like to be the beautiful chick and it seems like she has never had a really alpha boyfriend judging from the melt downs that all the men in the show go through.

Marnie is the type of chick who goes for a douche like Booth. She is shallow, hotter than average and thinks that her hotness makes her better than everyone else. Basically she is a hostess with an inflated sense of self-worth, and only interested in Booth insofar as it validates her identity. She brought nothing to the table except her poon, and thought that would be enough. Unfortunately, less and less attractive women are behaving this way now. I laughed when the dude offered her $500 for being a hostess, as if to say get over yourself and do something useful for me other than waiting around for me to fuck you.
Girls like Marnie are why the PUA movement is successful on some level- these tactics certainly work for narcissistic, superficial women (basically 99% of women under 40). This is the kind of stuff 20-something girls respond to now, because for them a relationship isn’t about connection; it’s all about how they are perceived by the outside world.

It’s almost as if the show is taking a stance against women who have an inflated sense of self-worth. Marnie had to be punished for so cruelly dumping Charlie last season, but since that point it’s all been downhill for her. She’s done her penance, and then some. This is not a theme that would fit in with the idea of female empowerment.

It’s a pleasant surprise to hear some common sense and reality spoken about Game and the ridiculous associated beliefs.
Your point about guys having lost any sense of their value is something that’s very true and that has never struck me before even though some of my good friends are like this – I have a friend who is extremely average, maybe even below average, in looks and social skills and who, surprisingly, gets decent attention from 5 and 6 level girls on a regular basis in the hipster clubs. These girls are reasonably cute and up for it – all of them are waaaaay cuter than Lena. But this guy is absolutely obsessed with getting tall blonde model type girls and just can’t be happy with girls on his own level. He is obsessed with the hot model types. He tried game and of course it made no difference, so that was a year or two out of his life, but he still has a really hard time just accepting that he can only get girls on his own level.
It’s become axiomatic that modern girls have a massive sense of entitlement and think they deserve guys much better than them, and there is some truth to that – although here in NYC girls seem far less entitled as there is a glut of beautiful girls – but it never really struck me before how modern men might have their own sense of entitlement to deal with – I wonder where it comes from? Why do all these modern guys think they DESERVE 8s and 9s and that they can get them by simply learning some mythical “skill” without changing anything essential about themselves like their looks, bodies, careers, educations, or wealth? Why would an average looking average job guy even WANT an 8 or a 9? It’s so weird.
I’m a Brooklyn hipster and I hang out with this crowd. If you go on any given night to the bars in Williamsburg or LES what you’ll see is tons of really good looking guys hooking up with hot girls, average guys hooking up with average girls, etc. Lots of guys in this scene have money and good jobs, lots don’t – it doesn’t really matter for ONS – looks seems the determining factor here – but jobs do matter more for relationships. And even here, good financially secure jobs are highly prized and sought after by the girls, although there are tons of exceptions and there are even girls in long term relationships with jobless guys. The main thing seems to be your look – both in terms of physical features and style and polish – and personality, in terms of do you embody the values hipsters like, like sophistication, intellectuality, creativity, (lol, just try being arrogant or macho and see how far that gets you) although there is a lot of mental vacuity here too. The girls are generally friendly and cool as long as you’re not a douche – don’t try to be “alpha” or “dominating” or any such stupidity – and will be polite and talk to nearly anyone. Lots of European girls in this scene too.
Girls the show is mostly a fantasy – in reality a fat ugly chick like Hanna would have SEVERELY restricted options in a city like NY and would have a real hard time getting a guy with a good body.

This episode clearly showed a few things:
1. Marnie thinks that sex equals a relationship. And I thought she was kinda smart.
2. Adam still cares about Hannah a lot and I wouldn’t be surprised if they get together by the end of the season.
3. Hannah clearly doesn’t have a mllion brilliant ideas in her head. Despite that she calls herself a writer.
4 New York is cruel, harsh and tough. People are mean and it’s survival of the fittest kind of environment.
5. Men tell it as it is, women on the other hand lie to each other, trying to seem cooler, happier and better than they are. It’s not so much about the friendship between Marnie and Hannah that last phone call, but more about how women really are these days. Constantly trying to impress and outdo one another, thus impressing somebody they don’t even care that much about. Everyone is disapponted and depressed at the end…thinking the other one has it all going on for themselves.
6. Too bad we saw so little of depressed Jessa, who clearly is the most down to earth and honest character on this show.
Overall a good episode and Hannah was fully clothed and didn’t have sex. Hurray

I am over twenty years older then the characters and have never lived in NY so I would never date any of them. I relate to women closer to my age. Women over forty are very different from twenty year olds. Dunham seems like an average looking woman for her age so I view her show as a look at the mindset of a typical white woman in our largest city.

One girl in particular reminds me of this girl interviewing the male model- she came over to my place (the sex was already implied as we had already talked about it) but of course she didn’t make any moves, and busted my balls the whole time I put moves on her, thinking she was being cute, or funny…I dunno. By the time I got the sex I was already done with her mentally, so the first and last fuck was a grudge fuck.

and i’m pretty sure there are male comedians who act this way. i like how the male model acts like nothing matters in the world and nothing’s going on in his mind. totally relaxed.

Even in surveys women will downplay their numbers while men exaggerate so it’s hard to know for certain.
Personal observations and changes in the popular culture are better barometers for that sort of thing.

Well, when such yuppie types get married, they seem to stay married, indicating that they are psychologically suited for monogamy. Half Sigma, long ago, posted the high virginity rates of students at elite colleges (people who study in childhood, delay sex, avoid drugs/alcohol, become their generation’s upper-middle-class in adulthood, end up living in wealthy neighborhoods).
