Journalists who report crime become victims of crime

This is an amusing story from the NY Times from earlier this month:

OAKLAND, Calif. — In recent months, journalists covering crime and other stories here have themselves become victims of crime, robbed of expensive cameras, sometimes at gunpoint.

Laura Oda, the chief photographer for The Oakland Tribune, has been robbed of her photographer equipment while on assignment twice since last August in Oakland.

In less than a year, every major television news station in the Bay Area has been a victim, some more than once. One experienced newspaper photographer has lost five cameras.

In the most brazen episode, a group of men punched a KPIX-TV cameraman last November while he was filming at midday in front of an Oakland high school. The robbers fled with his camera while it was still recording.

Apparently, Oakland is some kind of bad neighborhood.

  1. It’s surprising, as I’ve heard that Oakland has gotten much better in recent years.

    • I would guess that the parts of Oakland where the crimes happen haven’t gotten much better.

      • Maybe there is someone in Oakland who has figured out how to sell expensive cameras and not get caught.

    • Oakland got better under Jerry Brown (the best mayor in decades). Being a member of the white liberal ruling elite allowed him to bypass the black power structure and actually improve the city, disrupt crime, chop through the bureaucracy, and enable economic growth in the form of gentrification. However since he left things have gone downhill again with the election of another idiot black mayor followed by a leftist Chinese woman. Oakland is sinking but since so many SWPL moved there during the Brown era they’re demanding action.

  2. Shocking!

Journalists should stop filming at the scene of the crime. They can show the location on a map, and report safely from a studio.

  3. Hilarious. Will they actually learn about the nature of the people they are covering, or will they simply double down on the usual left-wing explanations?

I wonder when we will here about a news crew getting massacred?

    • Not too long ago there was a group of Germans tourists in Oakland. They decided to go bar hopping at night and to my shock nobody from their hotel warned them. Well after a night of drinking they get mugged by two black guys at gun point. The Germans (two males and two females) were badly beaten and had their wallets and credit cards stolen. They begged the muggers not to take their passports and other traveling accessories. After all they’d serve no value to a criminal but nope they took them as well. You see for black criminals it’s not just about the money they love exerting power and humiliation on others for their enjoyment.

      • God forbid they weren’t killed, because blacks are known to shoot their victims after when they robbed them as a way to display their merciless power.

    • These journalists are at the bottom of the journalist social status circle. Elite journalists don’t cover crime. Or have real jobs or live in the real world. This isolation from the outside is why they are right about everything.

  4. Peter, you lovely naif, where in the world did you get that idea? Oakland, home of the black panthers and the birthplace of crack, has always been ground zero for whitey-hating boldness. I’ll never forget a conversation I overheard in 1988, when a black kid in Berkeley related his visit to the South for a family reunion. When one of his relatives complained of the indignities of being black in AL or MS, “I tole him, we California niggas – we do anything we want!” Oakland – home of the longest serving black congressman ever, Ron Dellums, who didn’t bother to pay his taxes, the 1st school district in the country to be placed in state receivership, where Mayor Jerry Brown once said he could lay off 1/3 of the municipal workforce with no change in services, where the number of private schools has tripled in the last 25 yrs. … Jeez.

  6. If San Francisco and Oakland were one city then San Francisco would be the good part of town. Crossing that bridge is like going on safari.

    • A safari ride is more enjoyable than going into Oakland. Looking at wild animals is breathtaking, but staring at 3rd world savages, an eyesore.

  7. Lol, and I bet they still report that such crimes were committed by “youths” and/or “troubled teens”.

  8. I saw a documentary on the gang lifestyle in Oakland once. Apparently it wasn’t a violent place before they lost all their manufacturing jobs in the 70s.

  11. I have been the victim of what I believe was an attempted robbery. The guy, a scrawny Latino who appeared to be mildly retarded and wearing what looked like an ankle bracelet, asked to see what was in my pockets, and quickly followed with an order to give him with what was in my pockets. I simply told him “no, ” looked him straight in the eyes, and continued on my way to a somewhat busy street corner.

While I was at college, none of the victims who ran away from attempted robberies (yes, even armed ones) lost valuables or was injured (according to the e-mail alerts sent by the university police department).

I feel like these journalists (excluding the victims of hit-and-run robberies) probably just handed over the goods, and then curled up into the fetal position.

  12. Oakland has experienced some gentrification and had some nice long established hoods mostly up in the hills. But outside the few small bobo bubbles are large swaths of high crime areas. The bobo who was priced out of sf will endlessly boast about how she hella hearts oakland for being real, having lots of character, having more authentic artists, being affordable, and being sunnier. She will rabidly defend against claims that Oakland is dangerous by saying most crimes are criminal on criminal crimes. Shell mention how she walks her dog in upper rockridge at midnight without issue and jokingly say, “I worry more about the violent geese or squirrels than getting mugged”. But when the bobo is a victim of violent crime, “omg I can’t believe that happened! This makes no sense”. From that point, shell either run away to walnut creek or become even more delusional and defensive about how the crime in Oakland is blown way out of proportion to reality by the media esp by sf chronicle.
