Court documents reveal Elliott’s family was not that rich

CNN found the court documents from when his father filed to reduce his child-support payments to Elliott’s mother.

The following is revealed:

1. The mother made just $40,000 a year as a research assistant for a film company.

2. The father was deeply in debt from the documentary he invested in, and had no job at the time. (Elliott wrote about this in his autobiography.)

3. The father had until then been paying $2,000/month child support for both Elliott and his sister. The article doesn’t say what the court lowered it to.

4. His mother claimed in court documents that Elliott was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome at the age of 7. This was presumably cited as a reason for why she needed higher child support payments.

As you know, I disagree with the diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome, which apparently has just become the default diagnosis for any kid who has problems. Elliott’s problems came from having an extremely high Neuroticism personality, which caused him to be extremely fearful and moody (thus the frequent crying) and not from autism.

  1. Would be interesting to know if his biological mom took birth control and for how long, before he was born.

It can have the side effect of making its users rather weepy. As the firstborn, he had no older brothers to gift him with a more androgenic environment for fetal development.

Sometimes, back when the dosages were higher, you used to see kids who would be weepy, also with thin, kind of delicate skin and too many moles. Common side effects of the pills’ hormones, and which were likely passed on to the unlucky offspring.

    • Elliot writes that his mother was taking birth control pills when he was conceived, but they failed because of some other medication she took at the same time.

      May 28, 2014 at 12:52 PM

      • Holy cow. Poor kid. So no time whatsoever for the hormones to get somewhat dissipated out of her bloodstream.

      • The weird part is that she was working as a nurse (allegedly) on movie sets.

You would think that a nurse would be pretty clear on the effects of antibiotics on birth control.

    • What’s interesting about this case is that the shooter was a pretty good writer and left a very detailed account of his life. How honest the account is is open to question of course. Still, much of it seems quite plausible.

By the way, I now think the evidence weighs against the latent homosexual hypothesis although I wouldn’t rule it out. It would have been pretty astounding if there was no mention to speak of of anything to do with homosexuality in the entire autobiography/manifesto, but apparently at one point he mentions having been called a faggot. Given that he is capable of making mention of it, it seems more likely to me that homosexuality just wasn’t on his radar screen.

    • Elliot’s parents met in England, not Malaysia.

And his father met Soumaya in Los Angeles.

      • Peter Rodger is the archetypal English guy that the Continental Europeans would love to scorn due to the destructive forces of multiculturalism, a legacy coming from the deluded imperial tendencies of the British, that is still strongly felt today.

He seems to have this unsettling gaze that makes you want to avoid him. It could be that Western women find him repulsive looking and thus he had to settle with unattractive women from 3rd world turdholes.

And his son had very defined thick lips which may be a clue as to why he wasn’t popular with women.

    • I think Elliot mentions that his mother did get a better job later. She also had the use of a lavish Malibu beach house for awhile because of rich boyfriend.

  5. All the financial stuff revealed in the court document is consistent with what Elliot Rodger wrote. However he never mentioned anything about Asperger’s syndrome.

Elliot was quite bitter about his father losing money on the failed documentary. His father doesn’t seem like a particularly smart or good man.

  6. “He played California’s Mega Millions lottery whenever the jackpot rose above $100 million. He drove to Arizona four times to buy Powerball lottery chances. He went into a rage each time he did not win.”

Less than 100 million and he couldn’t be bothered? Reminds me of a similar anecdote about young Hitler raging over not winning a lottery. If Hitler lived today he probably would have been at least planning a spree killing when he didn’t get the recognition he felt he deserved but didn’t get.

French author Michel Houellebecq writes about the themes that seemed to torment this young man. About being obsessed with sex as the reason to live and all the status anxiety expressing itself as a sexual jealousy. This guy could have been one of his characters. He too writes about getting rid of sexual reproduction to rid humankind of this terrible curse of jealousy.

Hitler was happy during the WWI, fighting for a common cause with other men, not competing against them. I guess a lot of lost young men and women would benefit from finding a cause to fight for. They crave for meaning.

A White American Male converts to Islam and joins Al-Qaeda, where he kills Shia Muslims, a different sect from the Sunni Al-Qaeda whom they despise and kill for fun whenever there’s hot steam to be released.

Is this beta/omega male rage, or craving for meaning?

      May 28, 2014 at 2:31 PM

    • Some say the Nazi Party was founded in a gay bar in Munich. That the Nazis were riddled with gays. Not surprisingly, gay groups object to this characterization. But even Shirer outed high level Nazis as butch gays. Maybe that’s why Hitler was happy fighting for a common cause with other men.

  7. Loser: Full of excuses, never their own fault.

Winner: Always look at themself to find cause for failure. Never blame others for their own setback.

This rule applies to all people, races, nations.

You can use this rule to spot loser easily.

      • Well no one is accusing Elliot of being a big successful winner.

Pointing out that he’s a loser is to merely state the obvious, and isn’t helpful in figuring out why he became a loser, and how to prevent other young men from becoming losers.

Unless you think losers are just born losers, in which case it’s cruel to shame people for something they have no control over.

    • Lion. Maybe we are looking to far to explain why elliot did what he did. Some people are just born broken.

      May 29, 2014 at 1:04 PM

      • Tens of thousands of people are born broken, but only a handful become mass murderers.

      • Lion, Do you think a guy Eliot would have found a niche for himself in NYC? Or NYC is also too alpha for him with all the value transference – status culture?

        May 29, 2014 at 1:42 PM

      • He needed help from the adults in his life to find a niche, and he didn’t get that help.

But if he was smart enough to write that autobiography, he should have been smart enough to succeed at college.

      • He could have been a Hipster type living on a trust fund from his dad, ecking out in Williamsburg, NYC. I’m sure a Lena Dunham type could have taken him under her wing, and show him about life, despite his physical handicaps because he comes from a family with above average means to get respect from Hipster girls.

His fear of women – SF Bay Area would suit him the best with a town full of low SMV males, where men outnumber females, and most of the females in the Bay Area aren’t really sought after, basically he would be in a monastery living a celibate life.

        May 29, 2014 at 1:49 PM

      • Despite the fact that people think he was rich and entitled, he didn’t even have a trust fund, which so many young New Yorkers have. He had to beg his parents for everything.

    • “Winners” never fail to blame someone if their hide is at stake.

Look at the bankers in the major institutions. Nobody calls them losers.

Blaming one’s self is noble but that custom died around the time of Beatles.

  8. The stepmom was prolly making good money on that “Housewives” show. Might have had endorsement deals too, but I would assume in France or French speaking countries.

Also, for his father, directing work is pay-as-you-play. He could be making zero one week and then land a contract for a few hundred grand for a month’s work on a shoot. So what he made in past years isn’t really relevant.

  10. How on earth could they spend money on “virgin atlantic upperclass” tickets to London then? (at least 4 k for a returnticket) They traveled “upper class” before as well. In the papers she says that she depends on relatives, but at the same time she has to move to a poor area when Peter cuts down on the support. Just 3 years later she travels upper class… (and pays for Elliots apartment)

She must have got on hell of a raise….

  11. Those court documents were from five years ago, right after Peter Rodger lost money on the documentary. I’m sure his financial position improved quite a bit. He directs TV commercials, which may be unglamorous but pays very well: according to the Director’s Guild of America, in 2007 (the latest year I could find) the standard rate is just over $1,000 per day. And he certainly made a lot of money for his work on The Hunger Game.

  13. Elliott’s problems came from having an extremely high Neuroticism personality, which caused him to be extremely fearful and moody (thus the frequent crying) and not from autism.

It was status. His family lacked everything his social environment equated with status: His father has unattractive wives, no money, nerdy hobbies like directing money losing atheist documentaries, can’t attract hot women, pretends to be wealthier than he is.

  14. My final thoughts on Elliot’s sexuality: He was so starved for affection, companionship, sexual pleasure and release, that if he was really gay, he would have broken down and banged a dude.

Then again, I still don’t completely understand why he didn’t just pay an escort.

I need to read his autobiography.

    May 28, 2014 at 6:51 PM

    • The autobiography mention “prostitutes”, and he referenced “prostitutes”, he became upset that others were able to get the same “services” from hot women for free, while he had to pay for it. He did not want to explicitly pay money for sex, but he was willing to acquire wealth so others would be gravitated towards him.

      May 28, 2014 at 8:48 PM

      • As a woman, do you believe women are more shallow when it comes to men with money than looks? Of course woman want would something from a man in exchange for sex and/or a relationship, the same way a man would get something out from a woman.

I think wealth would most certainly gotten him some play, but getting it from a hot woman who genuinely enjoys his company, not likely.

        May 28, 2014 at 10:42 PM

  15. did lion say that “self-consciousness” and neuroticism were the same thing?

this just goes to show that extraversion and social intelligence or insight aren’t the same.

it’s been my experience that extraverts often lack self-awareness.

but i think it was nancy mitford who said the most distinguishing personality trait of the british aristocracy was that they were incapable of feeling shame.

    jorge videla

    May 28, 2014 at 7:40 PM

    • Self-conciousness is one of many negative personality traits associated with high Neuroticism. It is NOT about being self-aware.

“When feeling self-conscious, one becomes aware of even the smallest of one’s own actions. Such awareness can impair one’s ability to perform complex actions. Adolescence is believed to be a time of heightened self-consciousness. A person with a chronic tendency toward self-consciousness may be shy or introverted”

      • so being self-aware is being conscious of what matters? and self-consciousness is being conscious of what doesn’t matter?

    May 28, 2014 at 8:36 PM

    • This is the only real mystery in the Rodger affair. Just like his fixation on hot blondes.

Sadly, the true problem with Rodger is that he never adjusted his expectations to his realities. In that, he is not completely blameless for his suffering.

      May 29, 2014 at 3:33 AM

    • Eliot was 22. Online dating is a dead zone for men in this age range. Women older than you ont want you, women your age get messages from everybody else (even 59+ men will message 21 year old girls).
