White flags on the Brooklyn Bridge

Big police investigation to figure out who allegedly replaced the flags on the Brooklyn Bridge with faded flags.

Police removed the white flags just before noon from poles on the stone supports that hold cables above the bridge. One of the flags, viewed via video, appeared to have faint traces of stars and stripes on it.

Hey, here’s an idea. No one switched the flags. The last time DOT workers replaced the flags, they replaced them with crappy made-in-China flags made with fugitive dyes that faded in the sunlight.

* * *

Alternatively, it could have been a false flag operation.

OK, so the problem with my fugitive dye theory is that I searched through Instagram for pictures of the Brooklyln Bridge taken yesterday, and all show the flags looking normal. The dye wouldn’t have faded in the middle of the night.

I think this has to have been an inside job, done by a person who had previous experience legitimately replacing the flags as a City DOT employee. The employee took two of the old flags home with him instead of throwing them in the garbage, and then he bleached them. Bleaching an old flag would be easier and less expensive than buying a new white flag. (Where would one even buy such a thing? It would have to be a special order.) And of course this City DOT employee would know exactly how to climb to the top of the bridge undetected and replace the flags.

  2. NYC must be a nice place to live if cops have time for this garbage. This isn’t even a crime (I mean, i’m sure it’s a felony to climb on the bridge or something bogus like that)…but there isn’t a victim.

This might be the beginning of the American version ofävle_goat
Replacing flags with white flags or something something…

    • The NYPD is grotesquely overstaffed, and with today’s lower crime rates the cops don’t have much work to do.

  3. I believe the existing US flags that were supposed to have been replaced were 12′ x 18′. As far as I know, no one is making or selling cheap US flags in that size. There are only a handful of companies in the US that make them. They’re always sewn rather than dyed and they’re finished with a rope and thimble heading. There’s no way that I know of to cheaply mass produce them. It is possible that they faded rapidly, but that would be a fluke and a result of the US company that made them getting their material from bad dye lots from their supplier (also typically a US company) on their OG Blue and OG Red nylon or polyester, which is very unlikely to happen to two colors at once. It’s probable that someone replaced the flags.

  4. Those were American flags that were bleached out where they look “whitish” at a distance.

Lion — It could be one of those proles who is fed up with America. You know them. The ones complaining about how manufacturing jobs are going overseas. I doubt this is the work of Hipster perpetrator(s). They’re too unconcerned.

  5. I am not watching the news. Tell me why is this is a serious crime?

    • It’s a big deal because it happened in New York City, the center of the universe.

  8. this is new york city, so you can’t discount:
    1. someone wants to encourage America to not fight overseas – just raise the white flag
    2. someone wants to criticize America for not getting more engaged in israel

    my guess:
    3. someone with family that is a military veteran, criticizing lack of engagement in middle east

if this were a national issue:
    4. someone wants to criticize lack of resolve on immigration.
    5. some combination of the above.

I agree this has to be a DOT worker. Truth is, the american flag isn’t a potent symbolic issue for SWPLs, so the thought probably wouldn’t occur to them. for SWPLs, the flag is more a symbol of oppression, based on the training we receive at top universities. plus,
