Obama, please arm the Peshmerga

“This isn’t an equal fight between the Peshmerga and the Islamic State,” Mr. Kanna said. “The Islamic State has much bigger and more powerful weapons than the Peshmerga do. These people want to die and have lunch with the Prophet Muhammad. The Peshmerga want to live and go home to have dinner with their wives. They won’t play as dirty as the Islamic State does in war.” [WSJ ]

Yonadam Kanna is the “leader of the Assyrian Democratic Movement, one of Iraq’s strongest Christian parties.”

Of course Obama won’t follow my advice because Obama’s foreign policy is always against the interests of the United States, friends of the United States, and common sense.

  1. Islamists have been slotted in as diverse people of color, so Obama treads lightly in hampering their efforts at self actualization.

  2. Well apparently Obama has given to OK for some bombing attacks. I’m against it. Why spend even one more dime on these people? Why risk the possible shooting down of an American pilot, followed by his torture and execution if he survives the shoot down. For what? Let it all burn.

Humorous side note: heard this story of a guy who was wearing an ISIS t-shirt on the streets of New York, and got accosted and screamed at by someone for promoting ISIS. Only it was ISIS from the TV cartoon “Archer”! Essentially, it was this logo on a shirt:

    August 8, 2014 at 10:05 am

    • @peterike. I love Archer! I really hope they can integrate the crazed Jihadi version in the new season. Maybe they tackled every time they say the’re from ISIS?

  3. I realize that most of your regular readers might disagree with your advice, but I think we’ve been backed into a corner and need to support probably one of our few friends in the region. If al-Malaki is intent on driving the Iraqi state to suicide by his sectarianism, we still can salvage something from this mess by shoring up the Kurds. An ISIS state is totally at odds with US interests and really needs to be crushed now. However Obama isn’t going to do anything like that, but he might help the Kurds a bit.

    • I’m not sure an ISIS state is so bad. The benefit of ISIS is that it’s making moderate Arab states like Jordan and Saudi Arabia more sensible. Neither of those states cared about Israel bombing Hamas in Gaza. Obama has accomplished the amazing feat of making Arab nations more pro-Israel than the United States.

      • Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and a few of the Gulf States were, if not overtly siding with Israel, at least not opposing them in this last little Gaza war. So yeah, Obama “smart diplomacy” is making some crazy Arab States less crazy in comparison.

But tolerating an ISIS state will come back to bite us. Afghanistan merely tolerated a terrorist group operating out of their territory and see what happened. An ISIS State would be a full blown government dedicated to terrorism, and fully able to fund it because of Iraqi oil. One way or another, we will have to take ISIS out. We can do it now when it’s weak and easy, or wait a few years when they are rich, powerful, established, and capable of launching terrorist attacks at us.

      • That’s a lot of turmoil and death for a moderate opinion slide in countries that were under control anyway, and for support that will be forever tenuous. Also, ISIS poses no threat to any nation that isn’t under siege from the inside or extremely weak to begin with.

Any plan to maintain Iraq’s present borders can succeed only through the installation of a client dictator. The Cold War strongmen we allied with were a gruesome bunch but still better than anyone prole Muslims would vote into power.

Short of that, I agree a partitioned Iraq is the best viable option.

Lion, please explain how arming a bunch of dirt-poor fuckwits is in the interest of the United States and is common sense.

    • They are friendly to us. Helping our friends is common sense if we want to have friends.

    • It wouldn’t be costly for us to supply Arab Christians with arms. Nor would they need many arms; considering Muslim incompetence and stupidity, the Christians could defeat them easily even with outdated American weapons.

      • If you think muslims are stupid, you are going to be surprised.
Fanatical, suicidal, and against fun (No alcohol, no bacon, no looking at women) – Yes.
        But they are not stupid.

        August 9, 2014 at 6:59 am

      • But they are not stupid.

Maybe, maybe, not in strict IQ* terms. Even if for the sake of argument one assumes they’re somewhat above average for third worlders, their other trait defects – cowardice, Muslim religion, mental health problems caused by heavy inbreeding, violence, and primitive tribalism – often lead them to make stupid to disastrous decisions. Given these inherent disadvantages, to defeat them Arab Christians need only indirect military supplies.

        * Although those protesting and sometimes rioting Muslim immigrants in Europe and America look like usual low IQ, non-white savages.

  5. O/T – But related to Obama for some cheap laughs:

Toddler slides through White House gate, alarming Secret Service

    August 8, 2014 at 12:17 pm

    • I am surprised the toddler was not shot. At least the baby should receive life imprisonment for high treason.

      August 8, 2014 at 2:07 pm

  6. Unrelated: have you heard about the new app called SketchFactor that lets people rate an area by it’s “sketchiness”? The social activist police is already out calling it racist.

Related: Arming the Kurds has the precarious side effect of destabilizing western Turkey. I agree an independent Kurdistan would only be a good thing for the region, but getting there is the hard part.

    August 8, 2014 at 12:21 pm

    • *eastern Turkey

      August 8, 2014 at 12:22 pm

    • Turkey would be better off letting their Kurdish East secede. Turkey’s Western half, particularly their Mediterranean coast, is genetically Ionian Greek, prosperous, educated, and one of the more secular Muslim populations.

  7. OT but a couple pieces of Lion bait.

    1. Is the de Blasio unraveling of New York starting? Apparently, the squeegee men are back! Bratton promises a crack down. We’ll see.

    2. Mister Integrity, the Great Progressive de Blasio, just had BOTH his kids selected for coveted, hard-to-get internships at City Hall. He’s such a fraud.

    August 8, 2014 at 12:27 pm

    • It’s time to leave NYC, is all I can say. The city is nothing but full of White Liberal Mediocrity and NAMification for a place that prides itself as the greatest in the world. And yes, de Blasio will take the city into lower heights as he create more of these internships for the lower class ghetto kids.

      August 8, 2014 at 2:03 pm

    • And all the talk about gentrification in NYC.

2 million blacks in NYC aren’t going to disappear overnight. And 2 million is a high number, that’s a population of mid-sized city.

      August 8, 2014 at 2:35 pm

    • Someone asked this on city-data:

Why do the wealthy continue to live in NYC surrounded by so many poor people? The wealthy can live anywhere yet they are fighting over themselves to live next door to housing projects, homeless shelters, drug treatment programs, clinics, detention centers…..they are literally surrounded by the poor everywhere they go. Makes no sense. Riddle me that Batman.

Housing in New York City is expensive because of the large NAM population are in a city where there is wealth and jobs to be had.

Quite funny, a few days ago I saw a drunken stupor black guy laying on the ground spilling urine, and this was in front of a fancy town house in the Greenwich village.

  8. The Kurds and Assyrians appear to be among the few groups in the fight capable of acting civilized. The rest are just tribes with flags running around massacring people.

    August 8, 2014 at 2:05 pm

    • Well, Assyria had an empire while the Jews were crapping at their pants running a tiny village named Jerusalem.

      August 11, 2014 at 4:12 pm

  9. Obama IS sending weapons to the Kurds.

    August 8, 2014 at 5:24 pm

  10. Yonadam Kanna is the “leader of the Assyrian Democratic Movement, one of Iraq’s strongest Christian parties.”

It should be a plank of American foreign policy to assist Christian Arabs in establishing their own states; it should also be our position to have any remaining Muslims deported after independence. Of course Obama’s foreign policy is to do give the shop away to the Muslim Brotherhood so this won’t happen.

If he had installed an Iraqi client dictator as I’ve been advocating for years ISIS would have been destroyed by now.

  11. The Peshmerga want to live and go home to have dinner with their wives.’

Peshmegra means ‘ the ones facing death’, they have been fighting for generations. Anyone who wants to have dinner with his wife when it’s time to fight doesn’t stand a chance against ISIS.

    August 8, 2014 at 7:38 pm

  12. Doesn’t “peshmerga” mean those who face death? When did they go soft? And why haven’t they been able to use their oil revenues and links to Israel to buy more weapons?

The only reason ISIS is so well armed is that they stole the weapons we gave to the Iraqi army, which evaporated. US policy re Iraq has been 23 years of unintended consequences and going from bad to worse.

    Dave Pinsen

    August 8, 2014 at 9:13 pm

  13. Half the ISIS arsenal came from those damned Saudis smuggling it in to them. The Saudis wanted this as part of their proxy war with Iran. The other half of the ISIS arsenal came from the US. The US supplied the Iraqi army with a lot of equipment. Only the Iraqi government was corrupt and filled it’s officer corps with inexperience and incompetent cronies. When the fighting started, the officers didn’t know what to do so they abandoned their troops and left them to fend for themselves. Without leadership the Iraqi military collapsed and ISIS looted serious hardware from the Iraqi army bases. So that’s why ISIS was able to come from nowhere and win so dramatically. You can blame the Saudis and Obama for it. Since that pansy in the white house is largely responsible, the least he can do is send in a butt load of predator drones armed with tank-busting hellfire missiles to take out the hardware HE gave them. However, that no one has been willing to intervene before now makes me wonder if maybe the US wants ISIS as a hedge against Iran. Why else would they have thrown the Kurds and Assyrians under the bus? Perhaps this limited air strike was merely the US jerking the leash to keep it’s dog in line?

Regardless, the Kurds and Assyrians can’t fight the heavy duty hardware that Iraq has. It’s time for them to fight the war of the flea. Send teams behind enemy lines to ISIS held cities to cause trouble. Sabotage water treatment and power stations. Lay out IED’s and mines for ISIS convoys. And lob an occasional mortar down on ISIS bases. Mortars are cheap and almost impossible to tell where they’re coming from. Finally, a good team of snipers can shut down an entire city. Even if its rickety old Mosins. Even if they miss it will be enough to make people keep their heads down. Advanced countries struggle against these tactics. So ISIS couldn’t be able to stop it, either. It would break their morale and cause them to lose support. Then all the Kurds and Assyrians have to do is wait.
