Elliot Rodger vs. Dylann Roof

Upon further reflection, I see a lot of similarity between these two cases.

Both Rodger and Roof had divorced parents. Rodger had an emotionally abusive stepmother. It’s not clear yet what was going on in Roof’s family, but I think his parents were divorced multiple times so it was not a stable home environment and who knows what his stepparents may have thought of him?

Roof has been described as extremely introverted and his uncle was worried about him when he was 19 years old. Rodger was so painfully shy he could barely even talk to anyone (except in YouTube videos). It’s not clear yet that Roof had the extreme social anxiety of Rodger.

The alert put out by the police said that Roof is 5’9” and 120 lbs. That’s extremely skinny for a 21-year-old. Rodger was also extremely skinny. I strongly suspect that Roof, like Rodger, was bullied by his peers in school.

Roof, like Rodger, left his first high school (for unknown reasons) and was transferred to a second school (from which he didn’t graduate). So both Roof and Rodger had problems in high school. I think that Roof had the additional problem of not being that smart, but high school is easy enough so that anyone can graduat e from some high school if they just show up, so probably Roof dropped out for social reasons, perhaps bullying from the other students?

Rodger turned to hatred of women, and Roof turned to hatred of blacks.

The primary difference between the two is that Rodger was pretty smart and wrote an excellent autobiography. Roof is not that smart, has probably not written anything, and therefore we will probably never find out much more about Roof. The other difference is that Rodger grew up in an upper-middle-class environment in Los Angeles, and Roof grew up in a prole environment in the deep South. (Roof’s grandfather is said to be a lawyer, however Roof did not seem to be part of an educated environment like that.) Also Rodger had a better haircut.

The similar pattern, however, is divorced parents, introversion (and probably high neuroticism), and a slight build, which probably led to bullying and rejection by girls, which led to Roof being desperate to do something to prove his worthiness.

People ask why Roof sat in the church for an hour before finally opening fire. Probably, because he was scared as hell and was trying to gather the courage to do what he had planned. (Courage, in this cased, is used to mean doing something you are afraid to do, and is not meant to imply that it was something worthy of being done, because obviously it was not.)

  1. introversion (and probably high neuroticism),

If he’s introverted he might be intelligent.

      • introversion/extroversion are also some of the more slippery and problematic of the psychometric constructs. personally i think introverts really by and large are not really introverted at all, they are just so weird/different relative to everybody else they have nobody to relate to so they just don’t interact with people.

      • Despite this guy appearing to be a doofus (loser), his rant about blacks has some truth to it? When were most blacks morally deserving of anything worthy?

And with at our current president and his family, whereby given the opportunity to be in one of the highest position in the country, they come off as your typical grievance mongering tyrone & co., still long winding about racial oppression and a lack of opportunity.

Very interesting comment. Most of the times, introverts are indeed NOT introverts when interacting with people like them.

      • Introversion-extroversion is a very real psychological trait and not something made up.

It is often confused with shyness. There are introverts who aren’t shy, and there are shy people who are not especially intoverted but they are mistaken for extreme introverts because their shyness prevents them from connecting with people. High neuroticism (another real psychological trait) is the key risk factor for developing shyness and social phobias.

      • Shyness and introversion are quite related (one is a facet of the other). Social boldness is a sub dimension of the larger scale.

      • i’m not denying introversion is real lion, i’m just saying that i think a lot of the people who are classified as “introverts” might not actually be. the shy are also frequently mistaken for introverts and probably are classified as such by psychometric personality tests, but for the reasons you just gave they are not all introverts. i’ve been pegged as an introvert yet when i’m around non-proles (and i live around a lot of proles) and interesting people i never shut up.

It’s true scores on behavioral tests can’t as easily scored in tidy, point by point increments as with IQ. This is a consequence of IQ tests having right and wrong answers; behavioral measurements rely on self-reporting how one would react to situation x, y, z, […].

That said, where one places on the ‘Big Five’ usually gives an estimate of where one’s personality characteristics rest on the spectrum.

Just kidding Lion, I’m your biggest fan!

I find neither Elliot Rodger nor Dylann Roof to be all that interesting other than the fact they were both individuals with severely mis-wired brains. There’s millions of young men out there in even worse situations than either Rodger or Roof, with perhaps similar levels of anxiety, but they never kill anyone. It pisses me off that various political activists will jump on the bandwagon to use Roof to promote their pet political causes (as they did with Elliot Rodger), as if these loners with 1 in a billion level mental issues somehow represent important social ills.

  8. The key difference between Eliott Rodger and Dylan Roof is that the latter will inspire brutal, no doubt Worldstar posted, killings of various random White people unlucky and unwary enough to be caught by a mob.

Don’t think with the media, they are a braying bunch of low IQ idiots who can’t do politics or government or law. Think a step ahead. Blacks have already been stirred up to the point that random Black men go on a rampage from Baltimore, travel to NYC and shoot random cops dead. Or groups of Blacks in St. Louis beat to death a random White guy (Semir Begich) over Michael Brown.

Now imagine laughs, catcalls as some terrified White person pleads for his/her life, and is killed, posted on WorldStarHipHop. Its just an Iphone away. The more thoughtful ministers are already afraid of that but likely the killings will take place in a soft White target, like Brooklyn, or Georgetown, or San Francisco or Seattle. There will be angry Black men denouncing any criticism of the killings as “racist” and Obama will intone that its all White males fault.

Elliot Rodger killed a bunch of people but his impact was like a balcony collapse in Berkeley. Horrible for the surviving families but not Gavrilo Princep impactful. Roof is like Princep. Likely to set off a chain of counter-killings of similar innocents reminding everyone that Martin Luther King is both long dead and was an absolute charlatan (but with a nifty, $50,000 Rolex currently featured in Rolex’s advertising along with Eric Clapton and the late Steve McQueen and Paul Newman).

  11. Most, if not all people that commit these crimes are losers and omega males… you’ll never see an alpha spree kill because they frankly don’t have to. Of course prolish and underclass alpha males often commit petty and violent crimes but spree-killers can really only form from years of bottled-up rage and mental instability.

Prole drift and ‘tough-guy-culture’ is frightening because of this, given that it fosters domination, weaponry, and loudness over logic and understanding. Combine it with increasing racial hatred and you’ve got a headcase that would probably show less mercy to a room full of churchgoers than most people would to a room full of serial killers and Nazis. Just look at numerous violent and disturbing comments at various blogs and forums; many racist far-righties are what I would consider ‘self-selecting sociopaths.’

    • It appears rising extremism among Whites, is a knee jerk reaction from all the liberal pandering of blacks.

      JS

June 19, 2015 at EST am

      • That’s because most liberal SWPLs are out of touch with underclass blacks and most far-right proles are out of touch with middle class blacks. Rightist proles believe that minorities are some sort of huge looming threat, they act out in a less than sympathetic manner, and liberal SWPLs from a wealthier, more educated background away from violence continue the social justice, pissing off the far-right proles in the process. Centrists and the less short-sighted libertarians can only face-palm at this display, it’s a feedback loop.

But that’s not really the root of this crime. Your typical Stormfronter is probably too busy ranting about said ‘huge looming threat’ and drinking a six-pack to murder a bunch of churchgoers.

It is obvious that blacks are, by far an undesirable demographic, just by observing the employees of personal-oriented businesses, where they are almost non-existent, and far more too common as subsidized gov’t employees and low paying corporate retail workers. Limousine Liberal Whites who are the main patronizing demographic of these small businesses, are either too ignorant or disingenuous to notice this, and would reprimand anyone who dares to speak negatively about blacks.
