Dark Matter

Just finished binge-watching the first season of this series, which originally aired on SyFy but recently showed up on Netflix. This show was incredibly fun to watch, with just the right mix of comedy, atmosphere, and almost-believability. I am so sad that I have to wait until 2016 to find out what happens next.

My only complaint is that this is yet another science fiction story in which the future is dominated by evil corporations. This seems to have become the standard in mainstream science fiction. Although perhaps it’s an improvement on the future of Star Trek which is run by a benevolent communist government.

  1. Why are evil corporations a bad bad guy? BP destroyed the Gulf of Mexico. Did they clean up the mess? No. Did any of the executives go to prison? No. They dumped corexit on the spill and walked away from the mess. A pretty evil real world example.

By finding that BP was, in legal parlance, grossly negligent in the disaster, and not merely negligent, United States District Court Judge Carl J. Barbier opened the possibility of $18 billion in new civil penalties for BP, nearly quadruple the maximum Clean Water Act penalty for simple negligence and far more than the $3.5 billion the company has set aside. … In addition to the $28 billion in claim payments and cleanup costs it has paid, BP has been forced to divest itself of more than 10 percent of its oil and gas reserves, along with valuable pipelines and refining facilities to pay claims and increase its profitability.

    • You make it sound as if BP “destroyed” the Gulf of Mexico just for fun. They were producing oil needed by US, the people. Corporations make the tough decisions that governments won’t — they counter-balance the SJWs that would have us all impoverished and standing in bread lines for everything.

  2. Interesting. I’m about due for a new series to watch, so maybe I’ll give this a try. As for evil corporations, oddly enough when the Left started in on evil corporations many, many decades ago, they were mostly wrong. Now, they are mostly right. Corporations are quite evil, only what the Progs fail to realize is that the “evil corporations” are almost entirely on the side of the Progs, providing full throttle support to open borders, feminism, gay-ism, outsourcing, H-1B, etc. Yet the Lefties can’t get off their hobby-horse because of the juicy moral satisfaction it gives them. They still bash “big corporations” even though they are completely allied with them. Oh well.

Speaking of series, you might enjoy “Red Oaks” on Amazon. It takes place mostly in a wealthy largely Jewish country club in the 1980s in New Jersey. They nail the clothes, hair styles and other items from the time perfectly. It’s pretty funny, has three super hot chicks who spend a lot of time in bathing suits and such, and while of course it has to have the “secretly Lesbian mother” it doesn’t bother too much with PC tropes. There’s no NAMs at all (so far, I haven’t finished) and the token non-white is an Egyptian tennis pro who is both hilarious and constantly on the make, just like an Egyptian tennis pro would be. For anyone who likes 80s stuff (it’s kind of John Hughes-ish), it’s pretty good fun. (One oddity: the lead actor who plays the college age Jewish kid going to NYU is actually Welsh and starred in one of the great films of all time, “Submarine.” Most of the other Jewish characters seem to be played by actual Jews, including a still attractive Jennifer Grey as the secretly Lesbian mom and Paul Reiser as the brash Jewish macher with the insanely hot daughter).

But Amazon has some interesting original series sometimes, and they get some TV stuff that Netflix doesn’t. But I wouldn’t pay the Prime price just for the streaming. I also use the free shipping pretty frequently. Makes it worth buying some $5 thing on Amazon to get it two days later.

I’ve found that the “free” Amazon Prime movies are basically the same ones that are available on Netflix. Otherwise you have to pay, which is no different from getting them on demand. On the other hand, I’m looking forward to “The Man in the High Castle” series, so I’ll stick with Amazon for awhile.

    • Lion should watch the move “Washington Square” based on the story about an upper class family, written by Henry James. It was made in 1997, so it’s quite recent for a movie that doesn’t portray any main black characters, because they weren’t many in NYC of the 1880s, and the filmmaker wanted an accurate portrayal. Only one non-significant scene in the movie where it show a black guy with a few asians.

The present is dominated and has been dominated since FDR (and, to a lesser extent Wilson) by evil sociologists, much as Aldous Huxley predicted. Favored isn’t quite right; more like ”acquiesce to regulatory blackmail”. Normal free market incentives would never lead to corporations take upon themselves affirmative action burdens or green energy. If there were a real market for these policies, the social engineers of America and the EU wouldn’t have to spend decades warping market incentives; corporations would approve them on their own.

Yet many of these same Christians struggle with explaining, to themselves, the observable differences between populations of people whose development was historically separated. Given that religion can be recognized, and thus supported, as an expression of group evolutionary strategy, and Christian Republicans seem a rational support bloc for HBD to capture, it seems a worthwhile endeavor to provide a cogent response.

  10. I watched the first episode of “Dark Matter.” Not really interesting me that much. Of course, it has the now required multi-culti cast, including the standard Grrrllll Power character played by an actress named Melissa O’Neil who looks like some undecipherable mixed-race person. Within two minutes of the show starting this 110 pound girl is kicking the stuffing out of a man. Oh well, you just have to go with this silliness these days.

There’s a black guy who seems to be setting up to be the “wise black dude” character (patent by Morgan Freeman). A taciturn sword-expert Asian (racist stereotype!). And of course the group’s total A-hole is a very white white guy. Shocking! Did NOT see that coming.

Anyway, the story was marginally interesting. I might give it another episode or two. On the other hand, nothing in Episode 1 made me care in the least what happens next either in terms of plot or characters. I’ll have to take it on faith.

Why she is able to do that is explained in future episodes.

Also, it’s actually very realistic that there would be a lot of Asian and mixed-race people in the galaxy of the future. There are 1.3 billion people in China. We would expect pure white people to be uncommon.

      • The galaxy would act as a vast evolutionary archipelago with many very pure bottled up island populations, one or most likely more than one per planet. Not until the interstellar rubber dinghy is invented for the space arab or space latinos float in from some other solar system will these populations mix again on a large scale. Likewise, Asians will have to go to their own space universities on IIT New Mumbai but will not have the funds to then jet off to glittering Neo-California ten thousand light years away.

Of course, the conceit might be (I haven’t checked) that star gates can easily be opened, perhaps even into people’s bedrooms. In this case, we might see many mixed race citizens in the far future, not to mention cosmic home robberies.

It will be race mixing that will be uncommon because everyone who isn’t pure white by that time would want to use genetics to become white; whites are genetically superior, you know.

Melissa O’Neil actually is half Chinese, so that explains the mixed part. She apparently won some sort of Canadian talent show. But the although PC may have an influence in the casting, do you really think that if some sort of interstellar drive was invented a century or no, that whites wouldn’t be a tiny minority? I mean, they are a tiny minority on earth now, and those countries have all begun to decline. The galaxy will belong to the Chinese and whatever slave labor force they import off planet.

  11. Lion, Star Trek is about a realistic libertarian federal governance absorbing totalitarian empires, not a benign (is there such a thing?) communist government. It’s also intended to portray a lot of advanced Libertarian tools so the population back-engineers them: I pads, credible female captains, a ‘SMILE’ world where money vanishes, a world of racial balance based on an average IQ of 130. Roddenberry was a recognized big-L Libertarian, and said TNG/early Voyager had most of his ideas. He, Libertarian leader Paul Gilson, and I were drinking pals way back when and his informal think tank on some things.
