Taylor Swift, then and now

You Belong With Me (2009):

Blank Space (2014):

I don’t particularly like the video for You Belong With Me, but the song is great. It’s about a high-school-aged girl who likes the guy next door who’s a good looking football player, but her social status is far below that of his cheerleader girlfriend. Despite that, she is hopeful that their shared interests will compensate for her social status deficit and he will come around to seeing her as a romantic partner.

Five years later, Taylor Swift has lost her country twang as well as her sweet innocence. Blank Space is my favorite of the newer Taylor Swift songs. As shown in the video, Taylor Swift is a siren who is apparently irresistible to rich men because of her extreme beauty, sexiness, and wild personality. However, once an unfortunate man gets into a relationship with her, she turns into an insane psycho-bitch. Her transformation follows a trend in the entertainment industry in which female teen stars have to grow out of their youth by slutting it up. (As a side note, the lifestyle shown in the video is how proles imagine rich people live and is not how anyone really lives in the twenty-first century.)

By comparing the two videos, perhaps you can determine for yourself if Taylor Swift is just naturally skinny or if she is engaging in unhealthy dieting. I think it’s a little of both. She was very skinny as a teenager, but five years later she looks even skinnier, when you’d normally expect girls to gain a few pounds as they pass from their teenage years into their twenties.

  3. ‘You Belong With Me’ is my favorite Taylor Swift video, with the exception of ‘Mean.’ It really showcases her acting talent and proves that she can handle two completely different roles at the same time. She’s on par with Tom Hardy playing both Kray brothers in ‘Legend.’

‘Blank Space’ is ok, but my favorite video from her new album is definitely ‘Shake it Off.’ It was directed by Mark Romanek of ‘One Hour Photo’ fame. He’s also directed a bunch of well-received music videos like the one for Johnny Cash’s version of ‘Hurt.’ The whole video is just a lot of fun. After Taylor Swift decided that it was going to be the first single for ‘1989,’ she had an assistant fly out to Romanek on a private jet with a locked iPhone that contained the song. After a single listen, he knew that it was a video that he had to direct. It’s a heartwarming story.

Also, the videos for ‘Shake it Off’ and ‘Wildest Dreams’ have both received accusations of racism. ‘Shake it Off’ had twerking, which is cultural appropriation and ‘Wildest Dreams’ disappeared black people or something.

. . . and I think she probably has a healthy diet and a personal trainer who makes her work out for hours each day, although now that I think of it, in the making of video for ‘Shake it Off,’ she did describe how hard it was to get in shape for it and how physically demanding it was, so maybe she has mild bulimia or anorexia.

  4. Taylor Swift has handled herself quite well and has had good handlers. I’m glad she didn’t get trashy like madonna or miley cyrus did/are. I like this song, makes me teary:

  5. Funny that you say Swift has been slutting it up. Compared to her competition she seems classy, maybe less so than Mandy Moore.

    November 30, 2015 at 4:02 pm

    • I don’t think Mandy Moore has been relevant in about 10 years.

  6. “Remember, boys only want love if it’s torture…”

Sounds like she’s projecting from what women want.

    November 30, 2015 at 4:02 pm

    • Exactly.

      November 30, 2015 at 5:19 pm

    • Yeah, seriously. Men will put up with more from a woman that’s hot but it doesn’t mean we wouldn’t prefer someone who’s not a bitch.

    • You guys realize she didn’t actually write the song, right?

      • She co-wrote it with her producers. She was a prolific songwriter before she was famous. Same with Katy Perry, btw.

  7. I don’t like lana del rey but this song and video is good. It does a good job of depicting rich East Coast spoiled brats with too much time on their hands:

  8. Swift is quite slim. She wore a tutu for that Shake It Off video. She didn’t look like a ballerina but most women would look fat, even thin ones, in a tutu. As a woman I can say, she’s quite easy on the eye. I enjoy the visuals of her videos. As to those people who accuse her of cultural appropriation, just tell ’em to fuck off and die.

  9. This is trash. Lion, if you are not trolling, its scary.

    • Too much time away from the office, and too much time in front of the idiot box. I do believe a gentle intervention is needed.

      November 30, 2015 at 8:15 pm

  10. Taylor Swift’s mom is fat. She’s just a girl trying to compensate for her inevitable lardening.

    She will get fat eventually.

    November 30, 2015 at 6:44 pm

    • Agreed. If you’ve seen her mother, you know her “wall” will be an ugly one. Until then and as long as she keeps making great music . . .

      November 30, 2015 at 6:52 pm

      • She seems smart enough to know that day is coming and be socking away lots of cash, but who knows?

        November 30, 2015 at 8:58 pm

  11. Having grown up on songs like this, I can’t stomach this trash, had to endlessly listen to it on construction sites.

    November 30, 2015 at 6:45 pm

  12. “(As a side note, the lifestyle shown in the video is how proles imagine rich people live and is not how anyone really lives in the twenty-first century.)”

It would make an interesting blog post to write about what the biggest differences are in the lifestyles of rich people*, the middle class, and proles.

The most notable thing about the richest people I’ve been around (definitely not TOOS but you can be high-status in the flyover states for a lot less) is how much “help” they have around in terms of housekeepers, nannies, and tutors. This probably takes off a great deal of stress compared to a middle class family where both parents work as nurses or middle managers but can’t afford all the assistance. The other notable thing is how darn nice they all are. No wonder upper class people seldom get divorced. It’s not hard to keep at it if you don’t have to deal with complaining, sarcasm, and passive-aggressive behavior day in and day out.

If a person is an underachieving loser relative to their IQ (I am!), associating with as many rich people as possible is not a bad panacea.

*I’m excluding nouveau rich celebrities and athletes who basically behave like their class only more so.

    • I have seen country club waiters taking seeds off strawberries. I mean, if you can get any help you can, things get very weird very fast. Having family (children etc.) actually reduces stress vs. not having, so I am not sure what middle class family stress you are talking about. Do not work in high stress fields like nursing or middle management, unless you get high on stress. Go for low stress jobs that pay: programmer, engineer, family doctor, dentist, optometrist. Have you ever seen a stressed optometrist? If you are a normal woman, marry one of them.

      December 1, 2015 at 2:24 am

      • Family doctor is not a low-stress job. One must see many patients because reimbursements per patient visit are low, and there is always pressure to keep the office open late or on weekends to compete. A family doctor also has to spend a lot of post-office visit time editing and signing charts, following up on subspecialty consults, lab work and imaging, and communicating with patients about those results. Traditional family docs also admit their ill patients to hospitals and round on them daily. Hospitalists have taken over that function in many cases, but if not, hospital work adds to a family doctor’s stress.

  13. Ugh, unless you’ve already come to terms with living in an America that is full-scale Roissy, nothing could be less charming from a young woman than to coo, “I can make the bad guys good (for a weekend)”.

  14. It’s notable that Taylor Swift has always had a white boyfriend in her videos. How long will it take for Gawker et al to notice this and pressure her to diverisify?

    November 30, 2015 at 9:37 pm

    • Hard to say. It just might spare you the axe of SJWs if you avoid going diverse. You can dodge the charge of appropriation or a “problematic” depiction of fill-in-the-blank if you stay lily white.

The president, THE PRESIDENT! Listens to gangsta rap, but is embarrassed to listen to it together with his children. This guy is no Muslim. Now mates, when it comes to entertainment and culture you keep shocking me. Is America realy so bad? I, like all normal educated people of Russian culture, listen to beautiful romances written over the last 200 years and my kids xan listen together with me any time. Now, obviously my kids and grandkids only associate with Jews when growing up for the reasons that Lion had already mentioned, but also to keep them away from this gutter culture. Completely stupid, trashy and immoral song.

I’ll take Putin over Obama any time.

    • Unbelievable! Made my day.

      December 1, 2015 at 1:10 am

    • Yakov: why are Russian Jews so fanatically pro Russian? Russia seems like a pretty crappy place and the Jews all left it as quickly as they could, yet Russian Jews have an insane attachment to it. Why? Even ethnic Russians don’t seem to like Russia as much as Russian Jews do.

      • Not sure that I have a rational answer. When I was in the USSR all I cared about was Zionism and Hebrew, but once l left, I was able to take a fresh look at the Russian culture and I just loved. It’s natural for a person to be attached to the place of his birth and once Russia became friendly to Israel and the Jews there was no reason for me not to feel patriotic towards Russia. Jews, having a high IQ, are able to appreciate the depth and high quality of the Russian culture and national character. I emigrated over 40 years ago, but I still read Russian books and speak Russian without interjecting English words into my conversation. Many Russians can’t do it after a couple of years of living in Brighton, that’s because they were not people of Russian culture, just Russian speakers. I wouldn’t exchange Russian culture for any other non-Jewish one, to me it’s the best. Once I walked out of a wine store with a Russian from Ukraine, so he takes out a bottle of vodka right there on the street and asks me:
        – You wanna share?
        – No thanks, I’m driving.
        – Three things you always share: bread, vodka and cigarettes. Remember that.

Its very Russian to share everything with a stranger. I like this and many other traits of their national character.

Russia has its legitimate national and regional interests and I don’t like it when US tries to bully her.

        Russia is very great!

I don’t think that Russian Jews are more patriotic then ethnic Russians, though, just more noticeable. Hard not to feel patriotic having grown up with songs like this.

  16. You should try dating women. It is never too late. They do transform. Also, as they are emotional creatures, you can transform them into anything without much resources spent.

    November 30, 2015 at 11:57 pm

    • Hm.., not realy. You can’t change a someone’s personality. I think this is what Lion beleives.

      December 1, 2015 at 12:14 am

      • By striking the right emotion you can make them behave the way you need for long time.

        December 1, 2015 at 12:27 pm

  17. Guys, this video reminds me of something I wanted to share with you. An authoritative scaling system for ranking female beauty. Now keep in mind this scale is purely for facial beauty, not overall sex appeal.

Female beauty is to be rated on a scale of 1-10. Within each integer there is tremendous variation, so a 10 would actually be a 9.5 or higher while a 9 would be an 8.6 to a 9.4, etc. Here is the description of each point on the scale:

10: These are the angels in human form. Examples: Keira Knightley, Kate Middleton, Taylor Swift

9: Still angelic but just a little bit less beautiful than the true elite. Examples: Rose Byrne, Emma Watson, Emma Roberts

8: Usually what somebody means by “beautiful”. Still gorgeous, but not otherworldly. Examples: Zoey Deschenel, Anne Hatheway, Emmy Rossum, Katy Perry, Kate Hudson, Ingrid Bergman, Elizabeth Taylor, Allison Brie

7: The classic “hot” girl. Typically these are the hottest girls you will routinely see in everyday life. Examples: Selena Gomez, Lea Michelle, Mila Kunis, Mykala Maroney, Ariana Grande, Anna Kendrick

6: Pretty but nothing to write home about. Examples: Julia Roberts, Jodie Foster

5: Objectively attractive but simply too plain. Examples: Reese Witherspoon, Brooke Shields

    4. Not quite ugly but not quite plain either. Examples: Kathy Griffin, Sandra Oh

    3. No objective deformity but simply ugly. Examples: Julianna Marguilies

    2. Not only are they ugly, but something is legitimately wrong with their face; as in, they are essentially deformed. Examples: Tori Spelling, Sarah Jessica Parker

    1. Hideous freak shows. You know them when you see them. Examples: None.

I’m going to post this at Roissy’s too.

    December 1, 2015 at 2:11 am

    • Brooke Shields a 5? Did you mean this seriously? Even at age 50 (and that’s how old she is, born in May 1965) Brooke is at least a 7.5 or an 8. And you really think Taylor Swift is better looking than the young Elizabeth Taylor? Swift is paedomorphic, but if she and Liz Taylor were from the same generation, almost everyone would say Liz is the more attractive. What about Vivienne Leigh from “Gone with the wind?” Where would you place Jessica Alba or Alyssa Milano (these last two are the women I would choose to look like if it were possible) ? Sophia Loren? Also, you seem to have a bias toward Northern European women. Nothing wrong with this, but it’s not a view everyone shares.

      December 1, 2015 at 10:34 am

      • Maryk, you are conflating sex appeal with facial attractiveness. Prime Alyssa Milano and a prime Jessica Alba both have much more sex appeal than any 9 or 10 on my list, but this list is about pure facial beauty.

I have chosen more Nordic looking women simply because they are the one’s most publicly seen in the West. You aren’t going to see a ton of ultra hispanic looking women cast in leading roles in major motion pictures.

I think it is fair to say that Nordics and Northeast Asians are more facially attractive but Southern Euro and other ethnic looking women have more sex appeal. Look at young Salma Hayek or the chick from “Quantico”, can’t get sexier than those two but nobody would ever describe either of their faces as 9’s or 10’s.

  18. “the lifestyle shown in the video is how proles imagine rich people live”

Curb Your Enthusiasm shows how most rich people in LA live: drive a Prius, big but not huge houses that cost $5 to $8 million, lots of money spent on gardeners and maids, but no live-in help.

“and is not how anyone really lives in the twenty-first century”

Rich kids of instagram shows there are at least some rich people living in 30,000 sq feet houses, traipsing around on yachts and in Bugattis, and randomly having large wild animals in their houses.

  19. I don’t keep up with current music and never have. But I was of the impression Swift is one of the less trashy pop singers around. Regardless, I’m surprised you listen to any of it. I would have thought you listened to classical, instrumentals or maybe a few singers / musicians from the past.

    December 1, 2015 at 3:05 am

    • Don’t you know that most educated middle class Americans tend to have prolish tastes? highbrow is too gay or European. And they are also overworked and have no leisure or brains left to get seriously into Opera, old/modern Art or Ballet etc.
I bet the average foreman in a factory in socialist Russia was more familiar with great literature and music (albeit with a focus on Russian stuff) than the average law partner in the US

  20. Big T-Swift fan. Interesting you should mention her slim size because if you look at a picture of her family, they are all significantly overweight except for her. Interesting.

    December 1, 2015 at 10:08 am

  21. I pointed this out to blogger onestdv at hhe time, but he didn’t believe Swift would go that route.
