Reuters tracking poll

The Reuter’s tracking poll shows today that Trump maintains a 20-point lead over second place candidate, Carson and Cruz are dropping, but now Rubio has had a bump in support (which is worrisome because Rubio is expected by the establishment to beat Trump).

A staff writer at Slate is trying to shame Republican candidates into dropping out of the race so one guy (presumably Rubio) has a chance to defeat the bad guys of Cruz and Trump.

  2. I wonder if Justice Kennedy, by taking the gay marriage issue off the table, handed the election to Trump?

    • I doubt that Trump winning or not winning the nomination would have anything to do with what Justice Kennedy did. Social conservatives are not going to disregard social issues just because gay marriage is no longer being fought over. They know that social liberals will always come up with new issues where today’s mainstream values will suddenly be considered oppressive and need to be destroyed for the sake of some newfangled “freedom.” And the Republicans are currently the more conservative of the two parties, so they benefit from any new social-issues division. Polygamy is probably next. But it will take a while.

      • But at least the media has no practical reason to continually ask him about it. Come to think about it, they’ve been forced to fall back on a lot of real issues for a change.

    • It’s possible. Trump, being a person with a conscience, might have been unable to pretend to hate people for being born gay enough to win the evangelicals if it were a live issue.

    • The first thing I said after the SCOTUS ruling was that the homos had “shot their wad.” The left definitely lost their best issue with that court ruling. Something people don’t realize about politics is how bad it is to finally win an issue. Because when a side wins an issue they lose it as a political weapon. As much as I think the SCOTUS ruling was an abuse of government, I’m glad the issue is gone.

The left hasn’t found anything nearly as effective to replace it yet and may not for a long time. But maryk is right that they will always look for something to attack. It’s how they’re wired.

      • They are going for it with trannies but that doesn’t seem to be working.

  3. If I wanted to give good advice where Republicans would listen, I’d publish in Slate.

The writer doesn’t understand the splitter strategy (q.v.). Each candidate splitting vote away from Trump is essential to keep him from winning a majority outright until they can take him down.

    • The only candidates taking away from Trump are Carson and Cruz. Carson will be gone after Iowa and Cruz is likewise unacceptable to the establishment.

In contrast, Rubio, Jeb, Kasich and Christie really do weaken each other. If all of the others got behind Rubio, Rubio would currently be leading in the polls.
