Rubio is helping Trump win!

As reported at the NY Times:

With help from an allied group that is airing television ads in Iowa, Mr. Rubio is seeking to raise doubts on the right about Mr. Cruz’s toughness on national security — a potentially fatal vulnerability, should Mr. Rubio succeed, amid heightened concerns about terrorism. More quietly, he is trying to muddy the perception that Mr. Cruz is a hard-liner on immigration, asserting that Mr. Cruz supports “legalizing people that are in this country illegally.”

That’s great for Trump! The biggest threat to Trump is that Cruz wins in Iowa and becomes a major pain in the ass. Rubio’s ads are attacking Cruz where he is weakest and helps to ensure Trump wins Iowa, which means that Trump will easily win the nomination, probably winning every single state, before anyone realizes what happened.

But why would Rubio help Trump? Isn’t he part of the establishment? Doesn’t the establishment hate Trump?

Rubio is no doubt still holding onto the idea that Trump will magically disappear and therefore he needs to defeat Cruz in order to be the guy who benefits from Trump’s magical disappearance.

Another question you might ask is, that if Rubio and Cruz both hate Trump so much, why don’t they join forces, with one dropping out and the other throwing him his support? Well that is never going to happen. Cruz is not going to drop out because he’s not a team player. He’s running to be Trump’s vice president or to be the nominee in 2020. He doesn’t actually hate Trump that much and doesn’t care if Trump wins. And the establishment won’t let Rubio drop out because they hate Cruz almost as much as they hate Trump.

What’s far more likely to be going on right now behind the scenes is that the establishment is desperately trying to convince Jeb!, Kasich and Christie to drop out and support Rubio. Why would those guys do that? Because Jeb! is a good team player and will avoid the embarrassment of losing with less than 5% of the vote. Kasich will do it because he hates Trump and knows he has no chance of winning the election anyway. And Christie will do it because they will promise him the vice president nomination so long as they don’t have to offer it to Cruz in the case of a brokered convention.

My prediction, however, is that if Trump wins Iowa, this will boost his support in New Hampshire where he is already polling much higher than in Iowa. And if he wins in both Iowa and New Hampshire then voters in subsequent primaries will jump onto the Trump bandwagon. He will win every single state and be the presumptive nominee far sooner than anyone is predicting. These fantasies about a brokered convention are just fantasies; it’s not going to happen.

On the other hand a reader just supplied a link which purports that the MSM and Bush’s campaign have serious dirt on Rubio regarding extramarital affairs. However, don’t believe everything you read on the internet. At least half of it is bogus.

  1. There is a lot going on about this and I have no idea if it is true, but if the MSM runs with it (remember Herman Cain?), Rubio is already toast:

  2. Nate Silver thinks that Trump’s chance of being the candidate is about 2%. I think he is overestimate it.

    • He’s running to be Trump’s vice president or to be the nominee in 2020.

Cruz might want to be on the Supreme Court. The next Prez might nominate 3 people!!

      That’s YUUUUGE!

Trump’s chances to be the nominee are at about 90%.

      Chances for the Presidency 65%.

      That’s my guess.

  3. Rubio, IMHO, is the only other candidate that could potentially give Trump trouble, because he’s the only other candidate with a bit of alpha in him (and infidelity rumors only support that). Trump has made everyone else his B*tch, particularly Jeb!, and its been beautiful to witness. Without Rubio, Trump’s path to the nomination is secure.

  5. Great post.

” However, don’t believe everything you read on the internet. At least half of it is bogus.”

Very true. However, it’s a good reminder that we don’t have perfect information. There could still be plenty going on that we don’t know about.

  6. So Lion, you do or don’t think Rubio has had an affair? It would be a really stupid thing to do considering he was planning on running for Pres. Then again, he does seem like kinda an idiot.

I have to believe there is nothing to it or Jeb would have dropped it on him by now.

    • Anthony Wiener ran for Mayor of NYC despite the fact that he was still sending pictures of his penis to random girls he met on the internet.

Rubio’s problems with consumer credit shows that he lacks a lot of impulse control.

      • Democrats know they have a reasonable expectation of getting their slime discreetly swept clean. Anthony Weiner would be NYC mayor right now if the mysterious “Dan Wolfe” in Breitbart’s orbit hadn’t been on his nuts 24/7 and caught his errant tweet. Look at the NYT’s pissy tone regarding their being forced to acknowledge unflattering information about their hero.

Furthermore, NPR was still puffing up John Edwards as late as 7/9/2008 and taking him seriously as a possible Obama VP, at a time when his love child was 4.5 months old and the allegations had been in the “undernews” for 9 months. The National Enquirer finally had to publish photos of Edwards visiting the baby to get the MSM to stop playing dumb.

Rubio knows he won’t get that same courtesy. But he got in over his head – he likely expected to be the Don Juan of Tallahassee while the wife was busy with the kids in Miami, but donors kept recruiting him for bigger and better things, and he was too competitive to turn them down and let some other guy get the opportunity – after all, his peers like his BFF David Rivera were far dirtier.

      • Rubio is in many ways a typical Latino striver.

Among the many tribes that make up what we refer to as Hispanics, peacocking is common. When many or most of your relatives are poor, if you’ve enjoyed even a modest amount of success, you are anxious to show it off, in order to demonstrate that you’re not a loser, like they are. So living beyond one’s means is a very common thing. But then, it’s also common for your less-well-off relatives to try to hit you up for money.

      • If there is evidence, why hasn’t Jeb dropped it by now? Why are even Jeb’s closest people saying off the record that Jeb is done?

I’d love to believe it, but I don’t.

Re Nate Silver: 1. Nate Silver is a douche 2. He has moved the goal posts several times re Trump already (said Trump would start to fade by Thanksgiving, cited polls showing Trump declining before going back to saying polls don’t matter this far out, says Trump supporters aren’t likely to vote and when polls show that they are more likely to vote he dismisses the polls as meaningless) 3. He no longer says 2%. He went from 2 to 5 to now 7. He’s pulling these percentages out of his ass so there is no accountability for them.

      • When you have a young, powerful senator in Miami and throw in a lack of impulse control you are bound to get some extramarital affairs. Wouldn’t surprise me a bit.

  7. Iowa is really bizarre in terms of the larger contest. I don’t doubt he has appeal there, but winning outright? I don’t see how he’ll appeal to Christians in large numbers.

But I’m still hopeful that the ground game will be excellent.

    December 6, 2015 at 8:53 pm

    • Polls show that Trump does appeal to Christians, he appeals to every segment of the Republican Party except for affluent college-educated pro-big-business Republicans.

  8. Rubio is handsome and a powerful man in Florida. Were there hot women who threw themselves at him? Probably. Is he the type who would have had impulse-control and resisted? Probably not.

    December 6, 2015 at 10:14 pm

    • Rubio is handsome…

Rubio is ugly and has the face of a pig. How the hell is that guy considered handsome?

O’Malley is handsome compared to him.

Scott Brown is handsome. Didn’t help.

      December 7, 2015 at 3:34 am

      • “Scott Brown is handsome.”

For a second there, I was thinking of Scott Walker and I thought you had gone off the deep end. But then I remembered the other Scott from Massachusetts.
