Will there be a civil war if Trump wins?

“gothamette” commented:

I think your observation that this is the most important election since 1860 was spot on. I also thought that it was kind of scary: remember the Civil War happened as a result of Lincoln’s election.

My first reaction to this is no way. Americans have lost all taste for any sort of mass killing of other Americans.

But then, I noticed this news story from Denver about how a member of the ACLU of Colorado wrote the following in a Facebook post:

The thing is, we have to really reach out to those who might consider voting for Trump and say, ‘This is Goebbels. This is the final solution. If you are voting for him I will have to shoot you before Election Day.’ They’re not going to listen to reason, so when justice is gone, there’s always force…

My observation is that white liberals, who claim to be against hate, actually harbor a very deep hatred for blue-collar white people. Hopefully, the vast majority of liberals who claim to be against gun control don’t actually own a gun.

  1. no question in my mind there would be a civil war or maybe even a coup if Trump won.

  2. I haven’t decided whether

    (a) we’ve passed through an actual historical-behavioral discontinuity, and our appetite for mass killing of other Americans is truly altered,

    (b) expressions of liberal democratic tolerance and the “end of history” are evidence of how desperate we are to suppress the urge to wage war, and hence evidence of how strong the urge is

    (c) neither (a) nor (b) or a mixture of both that is complicated and less easy to breezily blog about.

    • (d) With social media, random people can say stupid things and it is much more obvious than before Facebook. ‘A member of the Colorado ACLU’? That’s some guy who mails a check every month.

  3. Lately, I have been going to PBS and DailyKos to get a feeling for the liberal dark side. Why do liberals like to put words in my head? Bigot, racist, xyz.phobia, un-American, and hate were bandied about like candy by the pundits. I noticed those hate epithets no longer hurt me or my future vote for Trump. Media “waterboarding” to exhaustion I guess.

    December 12, 2015 at 10:35 am

    • See the comment below where Tommy points out that the Civil War was really a secession. This is true.

I was thinking more in terms of a very very cold civil war in which people just don’t want to deal with each other. That would bring about a breakdown of our society and if that were to occur the military would indeed take over.
I don’t believe in the deep state or conspiracy theories, but the United States is a globalist power. Hillary is the spokesperson for the forces of globalization. Any true nationalist would have to be put down.

      December 12, 2015 at 2:52 pm

      • The truth is we are already in a civil war, it’s just that only one side is fighting.

A civil war would be more of an “American Intifadah” than anything else. Americans killing politicians, immigrants, government officials, media figures and business elites. And probably just rank and file liberals as well eventually.

I am not (officially) condemning or condoning it, I just think that is where things are going.

  4. There won’t be a civil war, but it wouldn’t surprise me if there’s a wave of bombings and politically-themed murders just like when American left went apeshit in the ’60s and ’70s following Nixon’s election. From the left’s point of view a President Trump would obviously be the most hated politician since Nixon, if not more so. It wouldn’t help that politicians like Obama and Clinton have been dehumanizing Republicans for years by referring to them as the “enemy” and as “un-American”, which I suspect is one link in a chain that has now led to an ACLU official advocating their violent elimination.

    December 12, 2015 at 10:37 am

    • The difference between the 1970s and now is that the Feds have a lot more experience breaking up terror plots now than they did then (thanks to unfortunate necessity). Any attempt by the left to go violent would be shut down pretty quickly and would cause a nasty electoral backlash as well.

  5. “My observation is that white liberals, who claim to be against hate, actually harbor a very deep hatred for blue-collar white people. Hopefully, the vast majority of liberals who claim to be against gun control don’t actually own a gun.”

And so what if they did own guns? White social justice warriors had best stick to using black street mobs as their muscle. Otherwise, they’re going to learn the painful lesson that poking an angry tiger with a stick is a terrible idea.

  6. My observation is that white liberals, who claim to be against hate, actually harbor a very deep hatred for blue-collar white people

And white liberals, who claim to be tolerant, are intolerant of conservative ideas.

White liberals are hypocrites. As Vox Day says: SJWs Always Lie.

    December 12, 2015 at 11:00 am

    • David Horowitz said it better: inside every liberal is a totalitarian screaming to get out. If you check out the FB page of the guy who called for Trump supporters to be shot, he is a perfect example of this ilk. He calls himself a “militant enlightenmentalist.” He continues to post very offensive things although not nearly as violent and offensive as his call for Trump supporters to be shot. He is completely convinced of his own righteousness and is quite insufferable. It is right to be that way of course, but if Trump were to be elected he and many others like him would be boiling mad.
I can really see a situation where people are so polarized that society breaks down and the military has to come in to make things functional.

      • Sorry, meant to write it is his right to be that way, not it is right to be that way

        December 12, 2015 at 2:59 pm

      • Yes but we can’t just condemn people like that, we need to learn from them.

Those who disagree with our reactionary values are not merely mistaken, they are evil. Their ideas are illegitimate and we must work to silence them.

        Think like a Progressive.

  7. Not a civil war, but maybe a dual-sided modern outbreak of the 1970 Hard Hat Riot? Think crowds of SJWs and proles beating each other up in the streets.

    • Larry Kudlow has come out in favor of Trump’s plan just not for Muslims. Lol.

      December 12, 2015 at 3:00 pm

      • Kudrow has an even better position on this than Trump. Because he wants a total moratorium on all immigration and visas until we get the situation under control. That dodges the issue of “discrimination” while being even more restrictive.

        December 12, 2015 at 3:32 pm

      • Kudlow is one of the most extreme open borders guys around. Up to now, he didn’t even consider the possibility that there may be too many Mexicans in this country. He would always drone on about what natural conservatives the Mexicans were. He must be extremely concerned about ISIS and Islamic radicalism in order to come out for a halt to all immigration.

White SJWs are one of the weakest and cowardly demographics in the country. Most of them would get heart palpitations if they saw a bb gun, much less a handgun or semi-automatic rifle. People who walk around with yoga mats do not pose much of a threat to any non-feminized male.

  9. I believe Trump knows what he’s doing when he pledges complete support and loyalty to the nation’s military, veterans, wounded warriors and police forces. Did you see his announcement on Thursday in NH when he received that endorsement from a New England police association? Death sentences for anyone who murders a cop.

First, these things are the right thing to do. But Trump may also know that he’s likely going to need law enforcement and the military on his side to push a lot of his program through anti-constitutional judges.

  11. Mexicans in this country are concentrated in dense, tightly-knit barrios and favelas. Rooting them out and deporting them in significant numbers will require a determined, ruthless military commitment. They are certain to fight back, especially since from their point of view we gringos are trespassing on land that is rightly theirs.

Arab Muslims might be easier to root out since there aren’t nearly as many of them and they haven’t yet dug in in large concentrations except in a few towns in Michigan.

    • “Mexicans in this country are concentrated in dense, tightly-knit barrios and favelas. Rooting them out and deporting them in significant numbers will require a determined, ruthless military commitment.”

People have been watching too many movies about the tough, determined minority fighting against a larger, stronger more ruthless enemy and prevailing.

The “tight-knit” favela is a huge weakness. First, you cut the power and the sewage, including electricity and natural gas. The lights go out, the toilet and the shower stops working, and the fridge breaks down.

Then you blockade all of the main roads. Nothing gets in or out.

      Then you wait.

Disease and starvation sets in pretty quickly and you can easily root the population out.

Example: have you noticed nobody talks about Tibet anymore? Where’s Richard Gere? Where’s the Dalai Lama? Answer: Tibet no longer exists. The Chinese government moved Han nationals into the area and scattered the Tibetans all over China.

That’s how easy it is to handle an alien minority when the government is backing them.

        December 13, 2015 at 10:14 pm

    • Mexicans aren’t going to be sent anywhere. The U.S. just needs to build a wall to prevent more coming, and to impose a complete moratorium on immigration for 50 years.

  13. French Prime Minister Says National Front Success Could Lead to Civil War
“There are two options for our country,” he said. “There is one option which is that of the far-right which, basically, preaches division. This division may lead to civil war. And there is another vision which is that of the Republic and its values, which are for unity.”

Here’s the original interview if you speak french:

    December 12, 2015 at 11:41 am

    • “And there is another vision which is that of the Republic and its values, which are for unity.”

      And may that happen, Inshallah.

      December 12, 2015 at 6:31 pm

    • “the far-right preaches […] division.”

Actually the so-called far-right preaches uniformity and social cohesion. It’s the left that preaches division, diversity, mutliculti, a rainbow of stridently projected tribal identities.

  14. The USA has never had a civil war; it had a secession / insurrection movement with its own more or less functional, geographically distinct government. In 1861 you did not see, eg, local sheriffs in the boonies tacitly collaborating with the rebels, or random assassination of Confederate functionaries (modulo some activity in border states).

A real US civil war would be far uglier.

  16. I really didn’t mean a violent civil war, more like a cold Civil War. Think of what Trump would be taking over after Obama. It’s not a pleasant thought.

    December 12, 2015 at 1:01 pm

  17. Historically, how many countries have had only one civil war?

I assume there will be another, the only question in my mind is the timing.

For the Left, it would be suicide, but hasn’t one of the Right’s observations about the Left always been that it seems to have a death wish?

This is slightly older, but shows the distribution of gun ownership by demographic

“Conservatives” are 1.5X as likely to own a gun and older demographics are also 1.5X more likely.

Those are just the baseline numbers. i would also think that further drill-down would show that those “Conservative” gun owners own more guns and are more proficient in their use.

They would probably also be over-represented in the groups (military, police) the Left would assume would protect them or fight on their behalf against any ‘militia’ style insurgency.

I have thought for over a decade that the Left is on extremely weak grounds, geographically and militarily. They can only survive in a world where an orderly society is taken for granted, at least this historical variant of the Left.

By being concentrated in cities, they are vulnerable to infrastructure disruption in ways that the Right is not. In fact, first thing I would advocate in any civil war scenario is to cut off the water supply and electricity to the cities.

And from a military perspective, they have far fewer people who can handle the dirty work of combat, once it gets beyond mere words. At least the Communists have always had thugs who could carry out the intellectuals’ ideas. The video from a few weeks ago of that female professor at Missouri is emblematic. There she was, calling out for “muscle” to remove the guy filming the protest from the scene without realizing, there isn’t any (or certainly not enough) to enforce her vision of how society should be organized.

As far as I’m concerned, a world in which the Left’s partisans (at least the ones who set the agenda; the lumpen-Leftariat are just herd animals and can probably be rehabilitated) cower in cellars and behind hollowed out walls like Anne Frank is fine by me. Good riddance to bad trash.

So, let them amp up the rhetoric to 11 because once things get beyond rhetoric, it’s open season.

    • The South thought the same thing about Northerners.

By the end of the war, they were kissing Union boots.

      December 13, 2015 at 12:24 am

      • “The South thought the same thing about Northerners.

By the end of the war, they were kissing Union boots.”

Did they really? I had a very left-wing race-apologist professor point out that he thinks the South really won over the long term because “blacks are still not equal to whites” and “The US isn’t as socialist as Europe or Canada because the Southern states are still part of the union. We should’ve let them go.”

From a conservative prospective, the large black population in this country is a result of the South, and by being forced to stay in the union, the South gave the North what they wanted and sent large numbers of blacks up there to wreak havoc on their cities, driving previously warring white ethnic groups into a single white suburban American identity and culture.

Northern and Western conservatives benefit from the fact that in a huge block of the US, whites almost monolithically share the same views. This is what drives the left insane.

        Bilbo Baggins

        December 13, 2015 at 12:27 pm

      • The South is still where blacks call home. States like Georgia and North Carolina have the highest percentage of blacks. However, New York State has the most n*ggas after Atlanta-land. NYC, the Paris of the New World, has the most blacks for a bourgeois city.

        December 13, 2015 at 2:03 pm

      • Unintended consequences. Militarily, the South was completely destroyed.

That’s why it was so easy to impose desegregation on them when we finally got around to it.

        December 13, 2015 at 4:58 pm

  18. “…the vast majority of liberals who claim to be against gun control don’t actually own a gun.”

This. I think a big psychological reason for their obsession with banning guns is projection: They know that if they were armed, they would go berserk and murder random people. They assume everyone is equally unhinged.

    December 12, 2015 at 1:27 pm

  19. If Trump wins the nomination there’s very real chance he will be assassinated.

    December 12, 2015 at 1:37 pm

    • Why?

      December 12, 2015 at 4:55 pm

  20. Correction: liberals hate non-liberal whites. I think you’re making the common error of assuming blue collar whites are overwhelmingly conservative. Liberals have no problem with blue collar whites who are OK with social liberalism, though they don’t really care about their economic plight. It’s non-liberal whites, no matter what their economic class, that liberals truly revile.

    December 12, 2015 at 1:59 pm

    • There are blue collar proles who have black & hispanic friends. So yes, it’s not about being blue collar.

Given the fact that most readers here comment from their computers stationed at a liberal center, it’s very hard to understand the concept of a non-liberal white person.

Does a non-liberal white person lives in the boondocks of dumb dumb nuthin land?

Even hardcore right-o-sphere folks like Rudy Giuliani has been known to take monetary donations from the Saudis, who ironically thinks he’s a great mayor. Trump has taken part in Hispanic Pageants.

      December 12, 2015 at 2:40 pm

  21. >>Hopefully, the vast majority of liberals who claim to be against gun control don’t actually own a gun.<<

In some comment war in the Atlantic recently, a progressive said to a conservative, paraphrased loosely, "we have guns too, and we are smarter, so we will kill you bad whites like we did in the Civil War".

A lot of liberals do have guns, although not as many as conservatives. Liberals with guns will happily join the police and military in going after bad whites.

    December 12, 2015 at 2:16 pm

    • According to Gallup, in 2013 gun owners identifying as “conservative” outnumbered “non-conservative” by 150%.

When you factor in that conservatives are more rural and therefore more likely to practice using their guns more frequently, the “progressive” advantage in ‘smarts’ would have to be greater than 50% to get to a level playing field.

IOW, that commenter at The Atlantic is deluded. Nothing new there.

  22. How many people here think that Lion needs to take a chill pill? Predicting civil war over the outcome of one election? Predicting a total restricting of the Republican party due to Trump – when 60% of primary voters have not even voiced support for him before the voting starts and we don’t know how many of the remaining 35% will go through with a vote for him? For all we know, Trump could end up coming in no higher than 3rd in every primary or caucus he enters.

Lion’s view that more people will support Trump when the actual voting begins is interesting but unlikely to be validated by events. The truth is that voters lose nothing by telling pollsters they are voting for a “radical” candidate. Pollsters aren’t going to denounce them. Their names won’t be revealed on television. But people who like Trump and already vocalize support for him DO have an incentive to reconsider their vote when they have to actually give him power. As of now they get to listen to him, be entertained, and cheer on the statement’s of his that they like. They’ll have to do more than that to vote for him – they’ll have to accept the whole person.

    December 12, 2015 at 2:44 pm

  23. Y’all are exaggerating way too much. Liberals who own guns are rare and liberals who have the stomach for combat are even rarer.

For that matter, no conservative wants to pack up his guns and journey into New York to kill liberals. There is no American Civil War coming anytime soon. There are a lot of people posting silly things on Facebook.

    December 12, 2015 at 2:54 pm

    • The US is already in a “cold civil war” to quote John Derbyshire.

And liberals really do hate conservatives with a passion, there is a literal “comic book villain view of everyone on the right, it’s hilarious. Of course all we do is swirl our mustaches, hate women, drink beer and rape, everyone knows that!

Take Hillary Clinton for example, mere days after the Paris attacks she said “Let’s be clear, muslims are peaceful and tolerant people”, unlike the intolerant right. Or black attorney general Loretta Lynch, who said one day after the San Bernardino shootings that she “Stands with muslims” and how the Justice Department will take aggressive action against people using anti-muslim rhetoric…

This religion of peace talk is truly Orwellian, one of those “who are you going to believe, me or your lying eyes” things.

      December 12, 2015 at 4:54 pm

  24. Liberals don’t like blue-collar working whites because they aren’t potential clients for the welfare state government programs that employ vast numbers of otherwise unemployable liberals. I’ve noticed a recent feeling among average people I talk to that the country they grew up in is being taken away from them. My high school librarian sister was upset the last time I saw her because her high school told her she couldn’t put up a Christmas tree in her high school library for the first time ever because it might offend someone. I told one of my coworkers about it and she said she liked things like Christmas trees because it’s a part of her childhood and brings back fond memories of that period. She said if immigrants are offended by things like that they should just stay in their own countries where they won’t be offended. I think this feeling of loss is a big driver of Trump’s support.

    December 12, 2015 at 3:00 pm

    • She said if immigrants are offended by things like that they should just stay in their own countries where they won’t be offended.

Name one recently-arrived immigrant who has expressed being offended by a Christmas tree. The idea that anything associated with Christmas is offensive is concocted by the dishonest native-born liberals who are mostly atheists and try to attribute their own views to non-Christian cultures, essentially using them to cover up their hate of Christianity. (After all, liberals are supposed to be open-minded and tolerant.) The fact is that many immigrants do appreciate and celebrate Christmas even if they do not worship Christ, and this tradition began even in their own countries of origin.

      December 12, 2015 at 4:26 pm

      • As an atheist who was born Jewish, I have no problem with Christmas trees.

        Lion of the Blogosphere

        December 12, 2015 at 5:05 pm

      • I am not a Christian and wasn’t born a Christian. My parents are immigrants. I have no issues with Christmas trees and saying Merry Christmas. I do not feel left out or alienated. If I did feel left out I would deal with it or join in. I wouldn’t demand everyone else stop celebrating so I feel better.

        December 12, 2015 at 6:05 pm

      • America is a Christian country, Christmas tree is good for America. What’s offensive about it? It’s cute the way it’s practiced.

        December 13, 2015 at 12:01 am

    • This. Why are they allowed to offend me but I’m not allowed to offend them?

      December 12, 2015 at 5:00 pm

  25. No there won’t be a civil war. I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of a few lawsuits though.

    December 12, 2015 at 3:20 pm

  26. Civil war, as in two factions engaging in armed conflict to see who will gain the upper hand and control the federal government? Not likely; in fact, I’d put that possibility as less than 1 on scale of 10. More likely we would see late 60s/early 70s style turmoil on steroids.

I was 10 years old in 1968, and remember that era’s turmoil. The difference between then and now is that back then Democrats were not so much inciting the unrest, as they were trying to explain or excuse it. If Trump wins the election, I have no expectation that Obama will make any kind of “the people have spoken” remarks, in fact I think he will be more than happy to pour gasoline on the fire by making assertions that Trump’s win was somehow tainted or illegitimate, thereby setting the table for looting, riots, and who-knows-what-else.

    Sgt. Joe Friday

    December 12, 2015 at 3:35 pm

  27. I don’t think a Trump win would lead to a civil war like has been described in these comments, but it wasn’t that long ago that we had an election that shocked and stunned the left: the 2004 election. After “stealing” the 2000 election and looking like a chimp, there was no way that Dubya was supposed to have beaten someone who both spoke French and constantly reminded us every 2 seconds that he was in Vietnam. But Bush beat Kerry, and the left went into fits. Two of the most common reactions was an interest in moving to Canada and counseling and psychiatric services for dealing with the depression of another Bush term.

That’s pretty much what I predict would happen again if Trump won. I hope the Trump state department will be prepared to process deportations for these lefties who hate their country and want to leave. Hey if Canada will take them, let’s kill two birds with one stone and get these guys off to Canada.

    Mike Street Station

    December 12, 2015 at 3:36 pm

    • Its different because Bush was a cosmopolitan globalist. He didn’t cost anyone money or power when he was elected.

Trump is a nationalist who is actually going to close the borders and rework trade deals. This is a huge swing of power and wealth. Bush was a “conservative” because he talked about God and tax cuts, he didn’t actually threaten any interests of the powers that be.

      December 13, 2015 at 6:16 pm

      • Well I may have to alter my prediction on that.

I was watching Fareed Zakaria’s show, GPS on CNN today, and it was hilarious!

First, Zakaria introduced the show by comparing Trump to Hitler, including showing Nazi march footage, then his first panel was a group of foreigners on how crazy and scary Trump is, and hopefully this idiocy will pass…

Then he had an interview that went over two segments with some Iraqi girl refugee trying to come to the United States but, spoiler alert, her application was rejected. This lead to one of the guests in the studio to start crying…

I’ve seen a lot of MSM propaganda, but geez, this really takes the cake. So yeah, the reaction is a lot more severe and crazed…and that’s a month before even the first primary vote is cast. Well maybe lots of lefties will leave….

  28. Why liberals are generally of the type that have never even been in a fistfight. Their talk is laughable. And if they think that NAM’s (especially blacks) would be their (competent) footsoldiers in a civil war they are truly deluded.

Additionally, they’re enamoured of blacks because they’ve insulated from them and have never actually had to rely on them for anything, whereas us southerners know the truth.

    December 12, 2015 at 3:39 pm

  29. The distinction originally comes from class, not ideology. Latter is a manifestation of the former.

SWPL’s/UMC are, by definition, more affluent and more analytical– I’m hesitant to use the word “smart” because there are many things they are dumb at– but their predisposition towards abstract thought makes them more susceptible to egalitarian ideology. All conversations that they have consist of generalities that conform to the consensus, which is that there is inherent plasticity in human nature and everyone can be molded the same way (women in the military; AA NAMs in college; “democracy” in the rest of the world). Their understanding of most things that they value– democracy; diversity; “entrepreneurship”– is in the abstract. Most SWPLS do not live near black people.

Working class people, on the other hand, don’t have the time or the brain capacity to conceive of this ideal world. Instead, their understanding therefore comes from what they see firsthand. Unfortunately, most working class Americans– black or white– haven’t had the time or capacity to become well-versed enough in (world) history and macroeconomics to know that the reason why they can’t find jobs isn’t (solely) because of Obama, but because America is losing its post WW2 head-start. They also cant’ afford to live in zip codes where encountering people of a higher social order would disabuse them of their distorted perception of “the rich”. Working class blacks instead blame “racism”; working class whites blame Obama. With elites laughing the entire time

  30. I hope there is war. Or as I would call it, a cleansing.

  31. Civil war? No way. What?

Maybe a “safe” facebook civil war. No one gets killed, just pissed off behind a monitor. Sounds ready made for today’s millennials. Symbolic left/lib wing bombings and flip-outs? Mmmm… I wouldn’t put it past some of the more mentally unstable ones. Could urban left/libs even survive outside of their urban enclaves if uprooted? That’s a laugh. They need their artisanal coffee.

I remember when Bush got elected, left/libs were fond of threatening to move to Canada. That’s easier than civil war and they couldn’t manage to do that. Doing anything takes work, effort, future planning, and dealing with the dislocation of change. Left/Libs are too lazy to “do” much of anything. Left/libs are talkers, not doers.

Besides, left/libs are too caught up in their anti-racist neuroticism. So in the end, it’s just more yap.

  32. I think the “greater risk” is that unrest that might happen if Donald Trump’s run is sabotaged by the institutional elites (or if something more grave removes him from running).

  33. I will kill for Trump.

    December 12, 2015 at 5:56 pm

  34. There will not be a civil war via a counter revolution if Trump gets elected. This is for the simple fact that the Left is far too cowardly. The only foot soldiers that could be mustered to fight for the Democratic coalition are ghetto blacks, and they are far too uncivilized to be organized into a cohesive unit.

Think about it. The vast majority of military and police personnel in this country are right wing by nature and are most likely Trump supporters themselves. No amount of progressive propaganda could convince white middle American soldiers to turn on their own kin and countrymen. The original Civil War was different in that the conscripts were drafted and the central issue (slavery) had much greater moral clarity. Today’s army is a volunteer force and most of them would probably love to see Muslims banned from the USA. I just don’t see it happening.

  35. So what if macbook hipsters don’t own guns? The communist revolutionaries will make sure the guns end up where they want them, just like they have always done throughout history.

Anywhere nationalism rules the day, there are marxist revolutionaries plotting violent dissent. It has been this way for all of western history.

  36. Yes, few liberals own guns. But they don’t plan to do the killing in person. They plan to order the police and military to do the killing. Since the police and military are mostly prole at the business end, if they get killed while they are killing white prole enemies of the people, that’s win-win from the liberal perspective.

Don’t count on the white prole police and military refusing to kill their brother and sister white prole civilians. The state can always find someone willing to pull the trigger.
