More evidence the city is going to crap under De Blasio

Graffiti is coming back. “According to the NYPD, the number of graffiti complaints citywide in 2015 is up 15 percent from last year. Meanwhile, arrests for graffiti are down 10 percent compared with last year.”

  4. OT, but interesting and generally relevant…

NYT, 12/17/15 – Liquor Taxes and Sexually Transmitted Infections

Maryland increased its liquor taxes in 2011 and a sharp decrease in the rate of new gonorrhea infections immediately followed. Researchers have determined that the two events are closely linked…In 2011, the Maryland liquor tax rose to 9 percent from 6 percent. After the increase, Maryland’s gonorrhea rate declined by 24 percent — the equivalent of 1,600 cases per year. There was no decrease in the control states.

The authors suggest that decreased alcohol consumption decreases sexual risk-taking, including unprotected sex, casual sex and sex with new partners.

“Policy makers should consider raising liquor taxes if they’re looking for ways to prevent sexually transmitted infections,” said the lead author, Stephanie A.S. Staras, an assistant professor at the University of Florida College of Medicine. “In the year and a half following the alcohol tax rise in Maryland, this prevented 2,400 cases of gonorrhea and saved half a million dollars in health care costs.”

Doesn’t look like the study controlled for race, changes in race, homosexuality rate, age, and immigration.

The rate among blacks was 10.6 times the rate among whites (38.3 cases per 100,000 population). The gonorrhea rate among American Indians/Alaska Natives (159.4 cases per 100,000 population) was 4.2 times that of whites, the rate among Native Hawaiians/Other Pacific Islanders (102.1 cases per 100,000 population) was 2.7 times that of whites, the rate among Hispanics (73.3 cases per 100,000 population) was 1.9 times that of whites, and the rate among Asians (19.3 cases per 100,000 population) was 0.5 times that of whites.

  5. “We take graffiti very, very seriously. Some of those statistics are very much of the moment and shouldn’t be overweighted,” the mayor said.

Here is the mayor saying he takes it seriously but saying he doesn’t in the same sentence!! My friend witnessed a physically violent mugging on West 28th St on Sunday evening. The crime rise is real! There is an opening for smart politician to make this the central issue in 2017 mayoral campaign and win.

  6. De Blasio has probably told the police not to arrest blacks except for the most serious crimes.

  7. I have mixed, though mostly negative, feelings about graffiti.

On public buildings, such as libraries, and public utilities like subways and buses, it looks terrible. It sends the message that the government can’t keep its own property from being vandalized.

I don’t care if it shows up on abandoned properties. There was alot of this in the “bad days” of the 70s but not so much now. A private property owner should have the means to keep taggers away from his or her properties, and this includes being able to threaten them with a gun. It should be treated essentially the same way as a burglary. If the private property owner doesn’t care, I really don’t care either.

    • My neighbor had his house tagged. $500K house. Sucked for him. Dunno how that happened, there are hundreds of houses in the neighborhood, didn’t happen to anybody else. Maybe it was a personal argument he had with someone, or a road rage incident.

      • It surely was done in retaliation for something. If your neighbor has kids, then they’re probably linked to the perpetrators. In the early ’80s in my northeastern hometown, teens would sometimes throw eggs at a person’s house.
