Papa Don’t Preach

I’m watching 80s music videos again.

I hate the pro-life teen-pregnancy theme, of Papa Don’t Preach yet I love the song anyway.

The music video was filmed on the North Shore of Staten Island in 1986, and perfectly captures the prole/guido essence of the borough. The actor who plays her dad is perfectly cast as a middle-aged prole Italian guy from Staten Island circa 1986.

However, I miss the 80s hair from Madonna’s earlier videos, and I hate the other look she has in the studio scenes where she’s dancing in a slinky black outfit.

  1. That’s the actor Danny Aiello playing her father.

    • For some reason I remember him from bigger roles, but I think this (or the Madonna video) was his biggest:

As to the song, realistically, if some high-intelligence floozy like Madonna gets knocked up through youthful impetuousness, the baby is probably worth having, and would probably straighten her out as part of the deal. It’s a relatively rare event though.

      • Great! I believe I’m a great influence here, as I previously posted that East Village, garrote moment in Godfather 2. The bar is now a SWPL hangout with a nice view of the public housing complex in the backdrop. One can admire NAMs from a distance, while sipping their favorite beer.

  2. I remember when she came out I was unimpressed, but in retrospect, she seems pleasant compared to all the high octave warblers (Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey) depressives (Alanis Morrissette) skanks (Mylie Cyrus, Lady Gaga) and coquettes (Taylor Swift) that followed.

    January 4, 2016 at 11:52 pm

    • Miley Cyrus seems plainly insane if you look at recent pictures. Probably something related to homos and pedophilia. (What else does the image of a tiny undeveloped girl running around with an enormous strap on penis suggest?)

Whitney Houston was in retrospect actually a pretty great singer in her prime but was dragged into the social undertow. And how. Fathers, keep your daughters off the metaphorical pole, even when they’re grown.

And don’t forget the gyno shot years when Britney Spears and others gave their all to the paparazzi.

If we’re comparing to Madonna, I’m looking forward to Taylor Swift’s lesbian S&M coal burning public nudity public urination/defecation etc phase. Go to Google Images and look for “madonna sex” and you will see Madonna’s phase of extinction burst attention seeking, which displays all of the aforementioned in a coffee table edition volume. Rotten yet oddly classy compared to what we’re given today.

There’s amongst that perfumed filth an inadvertently quite funny picture of Madonna sucking on an enormous foot, which I can recommend for its absurdity, but in the interest of work safety shan’t link to directly.

      • “When other kids were watching normal shows, I’d watch Behind the Music. And I would see these bands that were doing so well, and I’d wonder what went wrong. I thought about this a lot. And what I established in my brain was that a lack of self-awareness was always the downfall.” – Taylor Swift, in a recent GQ interview

This is why some people are drooling over the thought of her screwing something up big-time. It’ll be bigger than Tiger’s Thanksgiving but slight less than OJ.

        January 5, 2016 at 7:16 pm

    • I had the same impression – at the time I thought Madonna was uninteresting dreck and never thought there was any reason for her to have a career (although Like a Prayer is good). Especially relative to Cindi Lauper. But Curle makes a good point that Madonna looks pretty good judged in terms of today’s warbling skanks.

All this shows the real problem with a Basic Minimum Income: it will be the death of culture. As more available discretionary income is available at the bottom, it will be quickly appropriated away by clever managers packaging up ever worse and coarsening product. How many steps from some poor tax payers back pocket to Iggy Azalea to Def Jam to Russel Simmons?

And barnacle EngLit majors will be subsidized to churn out fake-think pieces on if Mylie Virus is culturing appropriating twerking. How is anything supposed to survive in that climate.

Looking back we can all clearly see that Danny Aiello never should have been raising the blond pig-tailed Madonna in that neighborhood. If he had moved her to New Hampshire she never would have grown up with spikey hair, a leather jack and slutty friends. Of course she is going to fall for the blandishments of the proto-Buttafucco.

But in today’s environment, the waves of this culture washup against everywhere, so even New Hampshire isnt safe. How would Joe Citizen from 1980 react to Flo-rida or Riskay? Probably declare a fatwa.

  3. I’ve been listening to a good bit of 80s music myself. Crowded House’s “Hey Now, Hey Now, Don’t Dream it’s Over” is practicaly ringing in my ears.

REM, Springsteen, The Bangles . . . when pop music is good it’s really something. Actually Springsteen’s music in my opinion transcends pop, and is at — it’s best — actually art, but I know many would disagree.

And by the way, when you say “prole Italian guy from Staten Island” you might just say “guido” and let us fill in the blanks.

  4. For a fun 80s re-visit, watch “Moonstruck.” Fantastic movie, and Cher was never as hot in her life as in that film.

    January 5, 2016 at 1:58 am

  5. Danny Aiello is also excellent as a pizza restaurant owner in “Do the Right Thing”.

    January 5, 2016 at 8:29 am

  6. In 1986 I bet her prole dad was a diehard Democrat. Now he is assuredly voting Republican.

    January 5, 2016 at 9:50 am

  7. Off topic, did you see Ted Cruz’ immigration ad? Hard hitting stuff!

    January 5, 2016 at 9:55 am

    • Magnificent. The best political ad I’ve ever seen.

      January 5, 2016 at 12:30 pm

      • Excellent! I never thought he was capable of something like this.

  8. Lion, anyone who grew up in NYC, and still want to live in it – being born to the right parents at the right location, is definitely crucial in today’s status signaling with SWPLs and their Manhattan scene. I know of a White Hispanic prole whose parents gave them his childhood, rent stabilized apartment in the East Village, where they now live in Puerto Rico as retirees, because housing is so expensive in the city. I had a few friends who grew up in Soho lofts, when they were dirt cheap to own 30 years ago. Manhattan and Staten Island were of equal status during the seedy eras of the 70s/80s. If anything, it would have been better to be a prole living in Staten Island, because it was safer. Who knew the tables would turn, when Giuliani came to power.

    January 5, 2016 at 11:24 am

    • * gave him

      January 5, 2016 at 11:33 am

    • “Manhattan and Staten Island were of equal status during the seedy eras of the 70s/80s”

You are completely off your rocker.

      January 5, 2016 at 6:00 pm

      • How so, no one bragged about living in Manhattan when Dinkins was mayor? A suburban life in Staten Island was seen as more desirable than someone living in a vermin infested walkup in the Lower East Side.

        January 5, 2016 at 7:38 pm

      • Lion, Is this sour grapes coming from someone who is not a self actualizer in Manhattan, or is she realistic?

Most young women would be infatuated with Manhattan!

        January 5, 2016 at 7:57 pm

      • Just a prole girl whose parents can’t afford to pay her rent for her.

      • Given the lack of dynamism and creativity for a city that boasts the greatest place on earth title, which also commands an annual rent of a lower middle class salary, for a place in Manhattan, people have a right to question/complain the inflated status of NYC.

Montreal, which seems too cold for certain NY natives during this time of year, is quite affordable, and its civic culture is very French bourgeois, interesting and progressive, more egalitarian, unlike NYC, where a stifling SWPL culture with a NAM backdrop defines the city. I don’t feel sorry for many Meriproles who are trapped in their own misery with a lack of fulfillment, as a result of the income inequalities set upon by their bobo masters, because they refuse to get their ass movin’ and tread the globe for greener pastures.

        January 5, 2016 at 9:06 pm

  9. Madonna is a very manufactured musical act, with a pretty mediocre voice. She was the first wave of modern “performers” who don’t do much songwriting or artistry but who stay on the cutting edge of whatever is hot, via the support of a huge contingent of marketing reps, producers, ghost writers, choreographers, etc.

    January 5, 2016 at 11:27 am

    • Probably ugly nerdy men wrote the music.

      • Most pop music these days is written by middle aged Scandinavian men. This is why the lyrics can be weird, since they’re not native english speakers.

  10. What makes this video or song “pro-life?” She says nothing about abortion being immoral. She wants to keep the baby because she and the guy are in love and planning to marry. Nothing wrong with this. In fact, by today’s standards her situation is not really a problem at all. White woman gets pregnant and marries baby’s father BEFORE giving birth. In terms of HBD this is better than shacking up first and far better than a married couple that remains childless. The real problem would be if the baby’s father didn’t want to even live with her or worse yet, if he wanted nothing to do with his own child.

I guess Lion thinks the situation represents failure because this guidette is likely giving up a chance to go to a selective college or become a high wage earner. But it ‘s likely that high prole is all a girl of this type would be aspiring too. And even having a baby before age 22 wouldn’t prevent her from achieving this – although it might delay her success by a few years. And based on her appearance and the fact that she’s having sex outside of marriage, we should assume she’s aspiring to anything higher than a career as an executive secretary. In that era many IA girls were virgins well into their 20s and some even until marriage. I’m talking about the ones who aspired to better careers and were more likely to go to college.

Also, note that this girl says more than once that she wants advice, but then says “don’t preach.” Just like a guidette – wanting it both ways! LOL.

    January 5, 2016 at 11:50 am

    • Just because she THINKS she’s getting married doesn’t mean it’s going to happen or “work out.” Remember Bristol Palin who was supposed to get married to her baby daddy?

      Lion of the Blogosphere

      January 5, 2016 at 12:29 pm

      • “Palin don’t preach”

        January 5, 2016 at 12:47 pm

      • Lion, please don’t insult guidettes by putting any of them in a category with Bristol Palin. There isn’t a guidette anywhere with as little dignity as Bristol . And it’s likely that Bristol was pregnant by someone else and then latched onto Dakota Meyer to make it look like she got pregnant by her fiancé. It’s even possible that Bristol’s “engagement” was a hoax concocted to give her latest round of unwed child-bearing at least semi-respectability (since getting pregnant by a fiancé is classier than getting pregnant by a one-night stand in Vegas, which is probably what happened.) Meyer may be getting paid to go along with the hoax or is willing to go along for free. On his website he fails to specifically state that he is the baby’s father, but carefully crafted his words so that he gives the impression that he is.

A guidette who wanted a baby but didn’t care if she was married wouldn’t concoct a story. She’d simply say she wanted a baby and didn’t care about marriage and tell anyone who lectures her (“Maryk” included” to _uck off) Or she’d, if she was in the public eye, apologize for any embarrassment this causes her friends/family and claim that she’ll do the best she can to be a good Mom and provide some decent male relatives who give the child attention from a man. Then she’d go away. No way she’d show her out of wedlock pregnancy belly in one photo after another. Snooki is a different situation because she and Gianni were getting married. And Snooki is less a guidette than an actress who is paid for bad behavior.

Again, Staten Island doesn’t deserve the Palin analogy.

        January 5, 2016 at 3:54 pm

      • MaryK, I’m sure many people would rather take up residence in Staten Island, instead of Anchorage or any other prolier place in Alaska.

Alaska is a wasteland. We should sell it to the Canadians, who will make better use of it.

  11. That looks like Fort Wadsworth which is technically mid-island.

The intersection in the auto shop scene looks like the same one used in (the very bad film) “Staten Island Summer.” I wonder if it was an homage.

It’s possible you might have had a chance with Madonna. She might have been turned on by your internet name!

      January 5, 2016 at 3:59 pm

      • She called me “Big Daddy.” After five years together, we got engaged in ’86, but that didn’t last six months. She’s now been married to the same lucky guy for almost 25 years w/ two grown sons. I hadn’t seen her in almost 20 years, but out of the blue, she tracked me down through almost ten years ago and we’ve communicated a bit via email.

  16. Interesting how many times the WTC is purposely shown. Though I am not sure what the 1985 message of showing the WTC is. (This is New York? Contrast between lower Manhattan and prole Staten Island?)

    • You forget how iconic the WTC was.

      January 5, 2016 at 4:44 pm

      • Many architectural structures built during post-war America, before the 90s, were deemed unattractive.

On a similar note, apartment buildings with a 8′ standard ceiling height (built during this era) are atrocious, and oppressive for anyone who is above 5’11.

“executive director of Planned Parenthood of New York City, Alfred Moran
Mr. Moran remembers how his agency’s clinics were filled last year with girls wearing fingerless lace gloves and rosaries around their necks, in imitation of Madonna’s fashion style.

”Everybody I’ve talked to believes she has more impact on young teen-agers than any other single entertainer since the Beatles,” Mr. Moran said. ”That’s what makes this particular song so destructive.”
