Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy

Molly Ringwald sure did age a lot better. Or maybe it’s because Molly is five years younger, and five years makes a huge difference for women their respective ages.

It’s sad that Ally Sheedy, who was so cute in 80s movies, looks so plain today.

  1. Beauty fades, dumb is forever.

I would amend that by saying kindness is immortal.

    • “Beauty fades” was actually one of the funny lines in Desperately Seeking Susan. Stephen Wright’s jewess date delivered it as he was admiring Madonna.

  2. what is it with you guys and Sheedy? The only time I ever really found her attactive was when she was playing the weirdo in The Breakfast Club. Later in that same film when she was all cleaned up I thought she was back to being a 5.

    Molly was a 5.5.

If you want to talk about good looking 80s stars I think the one that really stands out is Mia Sara, who was probably an 8 in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Jennifer Grey a 6.5. Andy MacDowell is probably the perfect 6. Even Demi Moore was probably only an 8 in her prime. Selena Gomez, who isn’t even known for her looks, is more attractive than all 80s actresses except for Sara and Moore, and honestly, Selena has a prettier face than does Moore.

Definitely much better looking leading ladies these days. Although the female movie stars of the 40s and 50s put today’s girls to shame, in beauty at least, if not in raw sex appeal.

    • Andie MacDowell was gorgeous. Only Susanna Hoffs was more beautiful.

      • And Susanna Hoffs is still beautiful. She looks better today than either of the two above.

    • I must throw my gage at thee for insulting the Molly! But she is/was a redhead, and they get automatic up-points in my book. Other than that, I quite agree with you. Stars today are cuter, as is the average girl in the shopping mall. (And I’ve had 6 decades as a spectator) Better grooming or awareness, I assume – a bit premature to for gene selection, I would think. Maybe not. I often wonder if all the white male lions that were killed in the World War (I posit there was just one with a 20 year cease-fire), affecting the boomers and subsequent generations.

The Bangles girl was indeed smoldering, if swarthy for my tastes. Hey – where’s that Banarama chick?.

      • One theory for why Russian women tend to be quite attractive cites the aftereffects of World War II. Russia suffered such huge combat losses that in the immediate postwar years there was a shortage of younger men. Only the more beautiful women were able to find husbands, so the theory goes, and today their female descendants are uncommonly beautiful.
As far as I know there’s no actual evidence in support of this theory. One weakness is that by no means all of Russia’s war dead were male. Many women fought (and died) in the military, while millions of civilian women starved to death or weren’t able to get out of the way of the fighting in time.
And then there’s the fact that Brazilian women also are noted for high beauty standards, yet Brazil hasn’t been in a war in many generations.

Nah. The Germans lost a very high proportion of their male population and it didn’t do anything for their female beauty.

And the theory doesn’t make sense anyway. What happens when there is a shortage of men is not women get left on the shelf, but each man gets more than one woman.

The main “improvement” in Russian female beauty is access to Western clothes and beauty products. In the Soviet days, women were notoriously drab (the stereotype was pretty much Soviet women = Khrushchev in drag) because they had awful Soviet-made clothes and terrible Soviet-made makeup and hair products.

      • And Russian girls try harder. Prole Russian girls try harder in a way that looks low class and tacky (but probably not to other proles).

      • As far as I know there’s no actual evidence in support of this theory.

The reputation of Slavic women for beauty long predates WWII. Napoleon’s kept Polish mistresses. Likewise, German aristocrats of the Holy Roman Empire preferred their mistresses be peasants from the East.

Have you tried dating Russian women? Or, if you’re worried about running into a gold digger, Polish girls? Central European women have less incentive to get into a relationship only for money now that they’re wealthier than Russia.

    • Sheedy, back in the day, had that something in her looks that drew you in.

I was checking out some pics from the movie “War Games”. It looks like she did the movie without makeup. As noted here, the make-up industry has come a long ways.

  4. The “sex symbol” actresses of the 80’s and prior decades were typically a LOT older than the leading Hollywood glamour girls of today. Cheryl Ladd was quite the sex symbol when I was in middle and high school but she was already 30 when the 80’s even started.

And I don’t know who it was that deemed Kathleen Turner to be sexy at some point, but her gravelly voice always gave me the heebie-jeebies in a most unarousing way.

  5. Brigitte Bardot and Sophia Loren were born within a few weeks of each other in 1934, both were stunning beauties in their prime, but today Bardot has aged horribly while Loren still looks pretty good.

    • Peter! You can’t tell a facelift when you see one? Loten has had a lot of nip and tiluck. Also, Bardot has gained weight. They’re both about 80, so it almost seems silly to care at this point, but Bardot has turned into a frumpy animal r if jts activist whereas Loren is still doing the Hollywood thing.

  10. ‘Ringwald’ is a horrible name. It sounds like something you’d give your pet dog tablets for.

There’s nothing so sad as seeing a beautiful woman growing old. Syrian families floating about face-down in the Mediterranean? Whatever. But seeing Princess ‘General’ Leia in that awful new film left me feeling profoundly depressed about the world. I remember seeing that woman strangle Jabba in a golden bikini (her, not Jabba). Even as a child I’m sure I must have thought that there were worse ways to die. She looks bloody terrible now.

  13. I can’t believe none of you guys mentioned injections. There are a dozen on the market now, Botox-types and filler-types. Those, alone with keeping one’s weight down, make a huge diference. And we can even freeze our fat off now, we don’t have to do lipo. Ringwald has stayed more active in show business than Sheedy, so she has more motive and money to invest in those things.

    Sheila Tone

    • Could be a chicken-and-egg question … has Ally Sheedy not kept up her appearance because she no longer has a particularly active career, or has her career slumped because she no longer looks youthful?

  14. “Only the more beautiful women were able to find husbands, so the theory goes, and today their female descendants are uncommonly beautiful”

This theory is pretty dumb, because it assumes that beautiful women will only make beautiful daughters. If the theory was true, both sexes would get better looking. It’s not like sons all look like their fathers and daughters like their mothers.
