The Revenant

The Revenant was one of the early recommendations, and I like the idea of seeing some of the Best Picture nominees before the Academy Awards.

As explained in news articles, the Academy gives out DVDs of all of the nominated pictures and they have then been leaked to torrent sites.

I’m just pointing this out for informational purposes. I am not advising anyone to use torrent sites, because that could be an illegal violation of copyright law. You should assume that I will be watching it in the theater. However, if you do pirate the movie, make sure you do a hit and run to avoid attracting attention to your IP address.

  1. What’s your recommendation on torrent sites? Do you think they could be a violation of copyright law?

  2. My review: don’t risk tainting your immaculate rap sheet for this piece of crap.

What is it about Leonardo that just saps the life-blood of all scripts? He is the frigid arctic blast that freezes originality in its tracks.

    • I don’t know how much influence DiCaprio has over the overall movie (though I suspect a lot), but his acting wasn’t the problem. The battle scenes are some of the best I’ve ever seen. It’s the one film that dared to show that the Indians weren’t uniformly innocent victims. They fought back – oh, lordie, how they fought back. Their warrior tribes simply ran into bigger, badder warriors that crushed them by attrition. Live by the sword, die by the sword.

But the longueurs. All the after school special stuff. The longueurs. The preaching. The characterization was plenty subtle for an action movie, but it made the teeth ache for the Super Important Messages they were trying to send.

And have I mentioned the longueurs? Someone needed to take someone aside and say “Dude. You are not Bela Tarr. You are not Ingmar Bergman. Just tell the story.”

So, no, I wouldn’t recommend it. It needed to be, at a maximum, half its length.

      • It was too long and stretched my ‘suspension of disbelief’ to a breaking point multiple times.

  4. It is not really a true story. It adds a few things so that the bad guys will also be racists.

  7. (Minor spoiler)

It’s really the French who are the bad guys here.

    • I have some French Canadian friends who were annoyed at this. The Quebecois trappers were more likely to be bedding Indians than killing them.

      • That’s where the Metis came from.

      • Mongoloid traces are often found among Canadian Whites. However, interior Anglo-Prole Canada is “more” Meti than French Quebec. Manitoba and Saskatchewan provinces are very good examples of apparent Meti admixture among the White demographic, who remind you of White Hispanics.

  8. A good VPN is 40 bucks a year. Everyone should have one. Not joking. Your IP is your identity, protect it.
