Live debate blogging

* This debate, all the candidates walked onto the stage without any weirdness like in the previous debate.

* I supposed I should really use Twitter for this debate blogging.

* Trump says that Mitch McConell should “delay delay delay” Obama’s Sct nomination.

* Kasich tries to give the only adult in the room answer. It’s not likely that Obama is not going to nominate anyone.

* Carson disproves of lifetime tenure for federal judges? Huh???

* Rubio doesn’t sound very impressive when he doesn’t have a memorized speech.

  1. The background is deep cherry red, and so is Trump’s face. I’m laughing.

  2. Trump says that Mitch McConell should “delay delay delay” Obama’s Sct nomination.

Nicely said. Trump should put as much public pressure on McConnell to not hold a vote until 2017 as possible.

  3. Trump should say the other establishment candidates will appoint a Souter to the court.

  4. Trump is really socking it to Bush about the war. He wasted the first 30 seconds by saying he gets along with everybody, but then he said full out that the Bush lied, and the war was a mistake. This led to a most unseemly exchange with Jeb Bush. Kasich takes over with his adult in the room act and says nothing original.

  7. Delaying a replacement can work since the euro crisis, with DB teetering on the edge of a Lehman-esque implosion, is going to take the world into a crash. The crash would serve as a good distraction to complement running out the clock.

  8. And Trump should have said Bush 2 didn’t protect America because he increased Muslim immigration and encouraged legal immigration .,,

    • Right. Kept us safe, my ass. We’ve had a dozen fundamentalist attacks since 9/11. And what about 9/11? What about the redacted 28 pages?

    • The Tsaernaev family was admitted as ‘refugees’ between 2002 and 2007. Trump should bring the Tsarnaev brothers up tomorrow and remind everyone Bush 2 called Islam a religion of peace.

  9. If Trump doesn’t hit Bush 3 tonight about Bush 2 endangering the country with Muslim and illegal immigration in general, he should hit him for that starting tomorrow.

  10. This is a great fight. Trump looks strong fighting the establishment here, everyone from Jeb! to his donors to Marco. The argument that W. “kept us safe” is so stupid that I can’t believe anyone but a room full of donors would buy into it. Trump lost the room, but everyone outside of it can’t be that stupid.

  11. I like Rubio’s plan of subsidizing childbearing. You can write off a piece of machinery but not money put into raising children? Very offensive to the WSJ, apparently.

  12. The world changed tonight.

Republicans must #1, Win #2, Win and lastly #3 WIN. Therefore no Cruz, et all. Trump ALL THE WAY!!!!!

And of course MCConell must hold out. The left will have to remain content with essential control over of every other nation on earth. They can have all, but not the USA. Now we will feel what Churchill felt, standing alone for sanity.

  15. Carson: Stalin said to destroy America, just destroy its morality, its patriotism, and one other thing. That really doesn’t sound like Stalin. I’ll wait for the fact checkers on this one.

  16. I think Trump supporters are emotionally invested enough in Trump and appreciate his outspokenness on immigration enough that they won’t budge even if they disagree with his comments about Bush’s foreign policy. I disagree strongly on that topic – I think the problem is not that we conquered Iraq, it’s that we pussied out afterwards. And 9/11 was obviously not Bush’s fault. But there’s still a good chance I’ll support Trump.

    • In the 2000 campaign Bush specifically said in a debate that he was against profiling Arabs at airports and then he of course gave us the disaster of Norm Mineta as Transportation Secretary.

Recall the ticket agent at Logan Airport who checked in Muhammad Atta and said he got a chill down his spine from Atta’s visage but “mentally slapped himself” because it’s evil to profile.

And then Bush increased both Muslim immigration specifically and legal immigration generally post 9-11.

Bush has much to answer for.

      • Maybe you’re right, but I’d have more confidence that Trump has the right attitude if he had said those things. What he said is too similar to liberal attacks on Bush.

  18. Trump’s statements against the Iraq War and George W Bush, and his defense of Planned Parenthood, won’t help him with Republicans. Maybe he figures he’s safe enough to win the nomination, and he’s moving on to the general election? Some independents and Democrats will give him a second look for going against party orthodoxy.

The debate seemed chaotic, with tons of interrupting and fighting. When the general election rolls around, voters can look at Trump and see that he was the sane one. Everybody else was booing.
