Bloomberg drops out, as I predicted

Back on January 24, this is what I had to say about Mayor Bloomberg running for president: “I think he’s just whoring for attention and isn’t serious. History shows that independent candidates don’t win.”

Today he announces that he’s not going to run. Just as I thought originally.

Although he has a pretty original excuse. He says the reason he isn’t going to run is because he would help Donald Trump by running, and civilized elites like Bloomberg must do everything possible to stop that from happening, because Trump threatened to “bar Muslim immigrants from entering the country” and the elites must do everything possible to ensure the continuous influx of Muslim immigrants.

    • “what is it with Western elites and Muslims? Why do they love Muslims so much?”

They’re not white, not Christian, and not civilized. That’s why.

    • I understand why leftists love Muslims; they’re a battering ram on Western Civilization. But I don’t get why people in the center or the right want us to be swamped by them. Maybe Islam really is that attractive and I’m just not seeing it for some reason.

      • The elites don’t love muslims. They signaling to other elites that they love muslims.

        March 7, 2016 at 8:01 pm

      • Bloomberg isn’t really on the center or right, he’s a pretty hard leftist authoritarian. Yeah he ran with an “R” next to his name because he realistically could not portray himself as against the 1%, but c’mon what part of the Republican electorate was he going to appeal to nationally? Evangelicals? Working class? Southern patriots?

        March 7, 2016 at 10:28 pm

      • @Mike,

There are 1.3 billion Muslims in the world, and they are not all low IQ idiots and refugees. They control a large swathe of the world and messing with them incurs costs. Oil will rise in price soon enough and with that their power will re-assert. In any case 1.3 BN people have the power to disrupt and status quo powers don’t like that.

China and Japan, the US’s two largest creditor nations, are essentially pro-Muslim (forget that China savagely represses their Muslim minority). They just shut up about it, because that’s how they roll but in reality they regard the US’s support of Israel as absurd, which geopolitically it is. This will all come out as the butcher’s bill comes due in the next 20 years, and the US is revealed as bankrupt and overstretched.

Bloomberg doesn’t love Muslims. He is just licking their boots and doesn’t want to rile them up. He’s a greedy coward, like everyone in our ruling class.

      • “There are 1.3 billion Muslims in the world, and they are not all low IQ idiots and refugees. They control a large swathe of the world and messing with them incurs costs. ”

I’m not claiming they are all idiots or refugees, but I am claiming that Islamic civilization is fundamentally different from Western civilization and they’re not compatible.with the West. Messing with them incurs costs, but so does dealing with them in any manner. I’m not advocating “messing” with them. Just keeping them at arms length.

      • Muslims who don’t take their religion seriously are compatible with the west.

The problem is that most Muslims believe that the Koran is the literal word of Allah and that Mohammed was the most perfect follower of Allah and should be emulated.

      • @MikeSS, I agree w/everything you say. I am simply saying that love has nothing to do with why Western elites advocate peace in our time w/Muslims. This is strictly business.

        March 8, 2016 at 1:47 pm

    • I think a lot of it is that liberals try to prove to each other that they’re loving, compassionate people. We all know about liberals’ moral-preening. If you love Swedish Lutherans, then so what? It’s easy to love them. But if you proudly proclaim that you love Muslims, then that shows you’re a really kind-hearted person, because you care about people who are problems to themselves and their neighbors.

(That’s a major reason why liberals proclaim their compassion for blacks more loudly than for Mexicans. Blacks are a lot more crime-prone and unemployable than Mexicans. That’s also why liberals generally show more concern about the welfare of Muslims than Hindus. Hindus in India might have lots of problems, but they largely keep them to themselves. If there is a Hindu ISIS, it sure isn’t very notorious yet.)

    • It’s because Western elites hate the US even more than Al-Qaeda hates the US.

      March 7, 2016 at 8:10 pm

    • The elites running the US and Europe are truly evil at this point. What sane person wants more Muslims, especially if you consider yourself a liberal. A lot Muslims aren’t big on the “live and let Live” thing.

They would rather destroy the country than be discriminatory. Being a discriminating person is actually a good thing.

      March 7, 2016 at 8:11 pm

    • They don’t. They are just clueless gutless cowards. Westerners don’t understand cultural differences. They’ve never been in a culture where religion has fangs. Muslims, esp. Arabs, also make terrific liars, and Westerners are gullible fools.

      March 7, 2016 at 9:38 pm

      • “Westerners don’t understand cultural differences.”

Western elites deny cultural differences. In their view, every race/ethnic group/religion/nationality deep down want and believe in the same things. The elites have managed to eliminate not only physical anthropology (because it’s racist) but cultural anthropology as well. It is no longer possible to accurately document and discuss the culture and behavior of any non-Western people. It is politically correct mind control that has led to catastrophic consequences.

      • “Western elites deny cultural differences. In their view, every race/ethnic group/religion/nationality deep down want and believe in the same things.”

Except for restaurants. Ethnic restaurants with colorful, spicy food made from exotic ingredients. That’s real diversity, and it’s the only kind that matters.

Additional mass immigration will lead to even more awesomely diverse eateries, solving the trade deficit, overcrowding, declining wages, lower societal trust, and all other problems. Only racists believe otherwise.

        March 8, 2016 at 12:57 pm

      • @Lewis Medlock, u r right. That’s the underlying reason for the insane Bush doctrine based on the crazy notion that we could democratize Iraq, and the Friedman insanity about how rising prosperity would make the Chinese people want democracy.

  2. We need to find an alternative word for “illegal immigrant”, because there’s a somewhat reasonable argument that the term is exceedingly disparaging, and I fear that “undocumented immigrant” could take over, which would be quite bad for the long term future of immigration restriction movement.

    A few suggested alternatives:

    -Illegally residing immigrant.
    -Unlawful immigrant.

    March 7, 2016 at 6:24 pm

    • When I was a kid, they were called illegal aliens. Why aren’t they still called that?

      Lion of the Blogosphere

      March 7, 2016 at 6:31 pm

      • Because ‘alien’ causes some to infer ‘less than human’?

        March 7, 2016 at 8:00 pm

      • “When I was a kid, they were called illegal aliens. Why aren’t they still called that?”

Because both “illegal” and “aliens” are hurtful, discriminatory words.

  4. You gotta think that Rubio is getting out before FLA now. He’s going to get crushed everywhere except maybe Hawaii tomorrow, Cruz is contesting Florida and it has openly been leaked that some of his advisors want him out before the primary. The only possible result of Rubio staying in is him being humiliated in his home state and quite possibly coming in 3rd place.

Which is fine with me, I want Cruz 1 on 1. Although that isn’t going to happen because delusional Kasich is determined to ride this thing to the convention so long as he wins OH which I’m sure he will.

How many more states are there that are filled with Stupid Christians? Idaho, Utah (stupid Mormons) and where else?

  5. Saw a Trump interview on Hannity tonight. He’s sharpened up his talking points and hitting some new ones. His team has clearly been able to get in his ear and help him up his game. Good sign. We’ll see.

  6. One nice thing about this campaign is that the establishment has had to be more creative to get their boy or gal in. Before you just needed someone with nice hair and a nice smile with lots of advertising and favorable free media.

Bloomberg said that he would run as an independent if both Sanders and Trump were likely to win their nominations, and that because of ballot access rules he had to make the decision by early March. With Hilary Clinton likely to defeat Sanders, these conditions have not been met. Trump is actually likely to win the Republican nomination, but now Bloomberg can just support Clinton or whatever substitute candidate (which may still include Bloomberg himself) the Democratic establishment comes up with if she has to drop out.

The Republican establishment has also come up with a “stop Trump at the convention” strategy that just might work, though historical precedent is against it.

There may have also been polling that Bloomberg has seen that shows how little support an openly pro-immigration, pro-free trade, pro-wealthy in general, socially liberal, nanny state candidate would have.

  9. ***what is it with Western elites and Muslims? Why do they love Muslims so much?***

    Otis the Sweaty,

See some of the formulations of Auster’s First Law of Majority-Minority Relations in Liberal Society:

“The worse any designated minority or alien group behaves in a liberal society, the bigger become the lies of Political Correctness in covering up for that group.” (source) A “restate[ment]” of the First Law.

“The more egregiously any non-Western or non-white group behaves, the more evil whites are made to appear for noticing and drawing rational conclusions about that group’s bad behavior.” (source) Stated as the “First Corollary” to the First Law.

“Once the equality of all human groups is accepted as a given, any facts that make a minority or foreign group seem worse than the majority native group must be either covered up or blamed on the majority.” (source) This may be the original statement of the First Law.

“The more illegitimate and dangerous you are, the easier it is for you [to immigrate to the West], and the more legitimate and productive you are, the harder it is for you.” (source) A “variation” on the First Law.

    • Auster was an interesting guy and quite a character. Too bad he’s gone.

He was very anti-evolution and pro biblical creation which used to bother me but that is a quirk of many right wingers.

  10. All this talk about Muslims covers up the fact that Bloomberg’s billions are tied up in trade with China and Japan.

  11. One strain of Leftism is to out-do the moral precepts of Jesus. So showing kindness to those most different to you and turning the other cheek to those who harm you is the motive force there.

Another strain is the Progressive goal of one-worldism. This is a 200 year project, and will involve a lot of breaking of eggs but will be worth it, in the judgment of Progressives, because of the near Utopia that will follow.

    March 8, 2016 at 10:13 am

  12. If I remember right, Bloomberg was going to run if he thought Trump and Sanders would be the nominees. Sanders has fallen behind. So those conditions are unlikely to be met.
