Trump wins the Northern Mariana Islands

Article here.

I forgot that the Northern Mariana Islands are on the other side of the International Date Line, so they actually finished voting hours ago.

This is Trump’s biggest victory yet with 73% of the vote.

Also key is that the Northern Mariana Islands is only 2% white, so we now know that Trump can win the votes of non-whites even better than he wins the votes of whites.

  2. I’m surprised you don’t hear more about these places in terms of vacations (Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, etc.). I would think the US Government would want to build them up as vacation resorts?

Have you ever meet anyone who has gone on vacation there?

    • It’s a really long plane flight. Much more convenient to go to the Caribbean. Or Hawaii if you live on the West Coast.

They probably get mostly Japanese vacationers. It’s not that far from Japan.

      • United Airlines has a flight from Honolulu to Guam that makes several stops along the way – the “Island Hopper” route. It’s one of the few remaining multistop flights in the hub-and-spoke era. Some people fly the route just for the flying experience. One of stops, Kwajalein IINM, is a military base and passengers aren’t allowed to get off.

      • When I lived in Guam as a kid we would travel to and from the states on ships which moved across the Pacific at a leisurely 8 knots. When we left Guam for the last time we flew back in a prop plane which stopped at Wake Island and Hawaii. I think it was a total of about 30 hours in the air and on the ground at
Wake and Hawaii before we reached California.

    • I think the Mariana Islands is where Japanese baseball teams go for their spring training.

    • I lived in Guam as a child. At that time there was no tourist industry there but I understand that since then they have built up quite a tourist industry mostly catering to Japanese tourists.

  3. I’m always shocked when people of color don’t behave the way that their privileged white social betters think they should behave. It’s almost like they don’t realize that Trump is Hitler. That ape-faced Humans of New York guy should have a long talk with these ignorant Island people.

    • It’s kind of funny; the only irl person I know who knows I support trump and is ok with it is African (recent African immigrant not descended from slaves). All my white friends, on the other hand, are horrified.

Of course, pretty much every blogger I read thinks Trump is great.

  4. I thought there was a movement to give Saipan back to Japan at some point.

Saipan is basically Japan’s Hawaii at this point (but the analogy doesn’t totally work, because Hawaii is also full of Japanese tourists).

Donald Trump would find it a good place to put a hotel.

    • The people who live there are content with the status quo.

      • Actually, I’ve read their economy has been hit hard. Which is probably why Trump’s message is resonating with them.

  5. That’s nine delegates for 50,000 people. Mississippi had 37 delegates for 3 million people. 1 per 81000. Others have pointed these things out, but that’s really screwed up, especially because, with all due respect, who gives a flying fuck about the Marianas? I could see giving them a token delegate maybe (and that would still make their votes more valuable than Americans’) but come on.

Maybe it makes for nice vacations for insiders for party “business” on donor dollars.

    Good to win though.

  6. Too bad they don’t have any electoral votes in November.

I did read, however, that Trump’s message has been resonating with blacks, and he stands to get as much as 15% of their vote. Black columnist Tavis Smiley (no rightwinger he) said as much himself in a recent column. If I were in Camp Clinton, I’d be very, very afraid.

  7. A Cuban immigrant coworker tried to engage me in a discussion about politics today. I ignored him, but he confessed that he felt ill because he couldn’t vote for one of the two Cubans running for President and had to vote for Trump.

  8. While opinions may vary as to the precise hierarchy of Hawaii’s many ethnic groups, almost everyone agrees on one thing: Micronesians, including those from the Marianas, are the absolute bottom of the socioeconomic barrel.

  9. If you go, stay at the Onoda Resort. Really rustic, but a wonderful and quiet place to relax. The guy who ran the place recently died.
