Yes, Utah, Mitt Romney is really a Mormon

Trump said about Mitt Romney at a rally in Salt Lake City, “Are you sure he’s a Mormon? Are we sure?”

Yes, even I am sure that Romney is a Mormon, because he wears the special Mormon underwear and he gives off a Mormon “Stepford Wives” vibe. And if I’m sure, then actual real Mormons are extra sure. Mormons have a special Mormon sixth sense which enables them to spot other Mormons. For real, I’m not making this up.

Trump really put his foot in his mouth. He can get away with saying stuff like this about the evangelicals, because the evangelicals are disorganized and aren’t really that smart. I guarantee you that between Mitt Romney’s endorsement of Cruz and Trump putting his foot in his mouth, Cruz is going to win more than 50% of the vote at the Utah caucuses and win all of Utah’s 40 delegates.

Let’s just hope that the Mormons in Mesa don’t turn out in droves and tip Arizona the wrong way.

  1. Meh. He was pretty obviously joking and people already inclined to vote for him probably know it. I’d love to believe this would hurt him, but I kind of doubt it. Only hope I have is that it somehow pushes anti-Trump people to Cruz and away from Kasich.

    • You can’t honestly be for Cruz. Can’t you see he’d be savagely shellacked in the general?

    • Agree. He was joking. And trolling Mitt, who has openly declared himself an enemy. Awesome!

  2. Nah. Mormons are not monolithic. Many support Bernie (dunno why!). Many Mormons are disgusted and disappointed with Romney. Lying is contrary to our values, period.

  3. What bothers me is the extremely reductive way Trump views other people.

It’s always “the blacks, I love the blacks” or “the Mormons, I love the Mormons” or “the poorly educated, I love the poorly educated!”

To him, everything in life is either a demographic group, a poll number, a dollar amount.

    • “To him, everything in life is either a demographic group, a poll number, a dollar amount.” — and people doubt he would be an effective politician. He’s a natural!

  4. So Mormons have the religious equivalent of gaydar?

    March 19, 2016 at 9:26 am

    • Absolutely, and way more accurate.

    • In some conservative Catholic circles people joke about a similar thing with Opus Dei members. There’s something about the way they dress and present themselves…you can just kind of tell.

  5. No. Mormons are smart enough to know that President Trump is merely firing back at Matt Fraudney for his snotty comments against Trump and that Trump is not truly questioning Fraudney’s faith — he’s just trying to get under Fraudney’s skin a bit. The idea that Mormons are so outraged by Trump’s comment that they’ll turn out in droves for Cruz is pure non-sequitur.

Trump will take Utah by a hair, thanks to the astroturfed riots financed by Organizing Against America and the Democratic Party, a couple RICOs if I ever saw them. Remember, Utah is pro-White like no other state in the union.

    • If you believe that you should bet a lot of money at PredictIt. You would win 90 cents for every 10 cents bet on Trump.

My money is on Cruz, even at those odds.

  6. Where would you put Mormons on the ethnocentrism scale?

    March 19, 2016 at 1:08 pm

  7. Trump was obviously trolling Romney. He was describing some of the things Romney had done recently that were maybe less than forthright. Trump was suggesting that Mormons are forthright and wondering, unseriously, if we can deduce that Romney may not be Mormon. Not a big deal at all.

  8. I think he was just teasing and no one will get bothered by this.

OTOH, it was very unwise of Trump to warn of “riots” if there is a brokered convention. I mean, really. He’s running for President of the US, not a local Kiwanis club. He should watch his mouth.

    March 19, 2016 at 2:36 pm

    • Why shouldn’t there be riots if democracy and the will of the people are subverted? Sounds to me like a much better reason for a riot than a career criminal dying in the back of a van because he wouldn’t let the cops buckle him in.

      • I’d only go there with you Cousin Vinny.

        March 19, 2016 at 6:05 pm

      • He’s running for President of the US, not a local Kiwanis club.

The GOPe would be the ones subverting democracy if they denied him the nomination after a large plurality (at least) of voters make it clear Trump is their choice.

      • Look, I realized that this is difficult for you to understand, but I’m talking about something called diplomacy. Discretion is the better part of valor. Haven’t you heard that?

It is also tactically unwise to say something like that because all of your enemies will be accusing you of inciting.

        March 19, 2016 at 9:36 pm

      • Democracy = majority rules. Not plurality rules.

Trump the deal maker should be able to close a convention deal.

  10. This (sort of, long story) Mormon from Mesa will vote for Trump as many times as glorious leader directs him to on Tues!

    March 19, 2016 at 4:34 pm

  11. Ugly new poll out of Utah:

    Cruz 53%
    Kasich 29%
    Trump 11%

Utah Republicans also aren’t taking recent events well:

“Only 29 percent of the respondents promised to vote for Trump in a general election, while 25 percent said they would write in another candidate, 15 percent said they’d vote for a third-party candidate and 7 percent said they’d back the Democrat.”

I assume most of that’s just grumbling, but at face value that would put Utah in play this November.

    March 19, 2016 at 9:28 pm

    • I said Cruz would win more than 50% in utah before a poll.

Utah will never vote for Hillary. Unless Mitt Romney tells them to.

  12. Yes, this sort of BS will work on evangelicals, because they tend to be dumber than Mormons. It comes across as BS to Mormons and brighter people in general.

  13. Glenn Beck Channels Mormon Prophecy in Utah for Cruz: ‘Body of the Priesthood’ Will ‘Stand Up When the Constitution Hangs by a Thread’

“I am a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints,” he explained. “What attracted me was not only the truth of the message, but also the people like President [Harold B.] Lee and President [Ezra Taft] Benson who knew exactly who we were – knew who we were as a country,” Beck said, naming prominent past presidents of the LDS Church.

“I joined many times. What held me through was the prophesy that the Constitution will hang by a thread, and this People would remember what our Founders did. It is our responsibility to stand for the Constitution,” Beck said.

At this point, Ted Cruz and the audience gave Beck a standing ovation.
