Contested convention news

Scott Walker predicts that if there’s an “open convention” then the nominee will NOT be Trump, Cruz or Kasich.

Cruz certainly doesn’t believe that. As reported by the Wall Street Journal, Cruz has managed to fill up the Louisiana delegation with all of his people. Cruz is maneuvering to have a majority of delegates at the convention who support him and will vote for him on the second ballot. It’s pretty clear that Cruz’s strategy is to win the nomination on a second ballot.

NBC News reports today that Trump has a team working on the contested convention scenario:

One campaign operative, who joined Trump’s convention team during the primaries, expressed surprise at that effort already in the works.

“I think the mistaken impression is that they weren’t playing by the traditional rules before,” said the campaign staff member, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “One of the pleasant surprises I had, when I joined, was that the state directors were already engaged in the process.”

Nevertheless, I feel that Cruz is a lot better at this than Trump.

  1. Lion, you are a lawyer (Cruz) and an MBA (Trump). Which is a better skill set for gaming the convention rules?

    • They both hire expert consultants so it doesn’t matter much. They are both smart enough.

The party won’t ever unite if the nomination goes to anyone but the guy with the most delegates, unless it’s super close or there’s some bombshell about the number 1 person.

  2. good article about how the CLIMPs view a contested convention:

interestingly, only 60% of the CLIMPs appear to be #NeverTrump’ers. A few more big victories along with a timely terrorist attack could push that to 50-50 or better.

  4. also, OT, follow up on the proles having sex on the ferris wheel. he’s dead.

“Philip Panzica, one half of the couple Las Vegas police said was caught on video having sex on the High Roller in February, was killed in a carjacking Saturday morning in Houston, his home city.

Citing police reports, the Houston Chronicle reported online that Panzica, 27, was shot and killed at 5 a.m. inside his fiancee’s vehicle after leaving Vivid, a strip club where she works as a dancer, police said.”

  5. Lion, a few thoughts.

One, this entire time you’ve been bemoaning Trump’s lack of ground-game, etc., as if he’s some kind of babe in the woods. No, he’s not. I offered a link several times from the LA Times that you didn’t read, so I won’t do it again, but it wall about how Trump is a very shrewd operator, the opposite of a “chaos candidate.”

My guess, and this is just a guess, is that the evil genius behind Trump’s candidacy is Eric. He and his dad are this close, and Eric is smart as a whip. He’s not dumb son of a smart guy, he’s a brilliant son of a smart guy. Thank Ivana for his genes. Ivanka is also no slouch, I think. Very bright woman. But I really believe that Eric is his father’s rock.

Second, let’s have some fun. Here are links about Amanda Carpenter:

That first picture of Amanda Carpenter tells you everything you need to know about her.

    Her blacklist, with helpful links:

Every one of these people is a patriot. Everything about Amanda Carpenter reeks of mediocrity, sleaziness, and phoniness. I read her Wikipedia entry and I said to myself, “she slept her way to the top.”

    • ” but it wall about how Trump” – should have written “but it was all about how Trump”. Sorry, I should edit better when I use text predictor.

  7. Who’s got jungle fever?
    Cruz got jungle fever!
Can I get a whoop whoop! LOL

  8. Ha ha! Cruising Cruz!

Seriously, is the ENTIRE GOPe closeted gay men?

    March 25, 2016 at 11:08 am

    • So this guy David Panton has been married to two beauty queens (Wendy Fitzwilliam and Lisa Hanna) and had a kid with each of them.

      But he’s gay?

      March 25, 2016 at 12:25 pm

    • If Andrew “Evil Eyes” Cuomo ever runs against Cruz it looks like he can bring that classic campaign slogan out of mothballs: “Vote For Cuomo Not The Homo.”

    • Yes there seems to be a lot of it in the college republican crowd. I count the ones who even got married and had kids (with a woman) but talk kinda gay. Never understood that.

  9. Cruz is about to be toast. A significant chunk of his evangelical base is going to desert him after this adultery scandal breaks in the national press. Trump will collect well over 1237 delegates before the convention.

    March 25, 2016 at 11:12 am

    • Yeah, right. He loses to a guy married three times who’s had (in his own words) more pussy than Cruz.

      March 25, 2016 at 4:21 pm

  10. Cruz doesn’t even need to be better at it than Trump. The people who get picked to be delegates are party hacks, and hacks hate Trump. If there really is a contested convention then Trump has no chance of winning the nomination. That said, some super and uncommitted delegates are going to back Trump first ballot, so he doesn’t need to win 1237 delegates via the primary elections to secure the nomination. Trump’s behind doors wooing should be focused on pinning as many of those delegates as possible to his first ballot stockpile.

    March 25, 2016 at 11:12 am

  11. So Cruz wins on the second ballot, the DNC files a lawsuit questioning his eligibility to run for President because…Canada, and the the courts rule him ineligible by the end of October.

    • His campaign motto should be, “lose with Cruz.”

      March 25, 2016 at 12:21 pm

      • Cruzin to luze.

        March 25, 2016 at 1:38 pm

  12. I’ve been hearing from the beginning that a lot of Trump delegates were not selected from people who were actually for Trump, and that they intend to vote for Cruz on the second ballot. Whether or not you like him, Cruz has had the best and most efficient ground organization of this campaign. In many ways it is like Obama’s 2008 campaign, in which Hillary would get the most votes in a state and Obama would get more delegates. Cruz has done a much better job of understanding and playing the system.

    March 25, 2016 at 12:02 pm

    • From what I see in my local GOP, some of whom are heading for the state convention to pick the delegates and/or run themselves, the Trump support is rather thin. It wouldn’t take much to switch them. It’s not like the Ron Paul people who infiltrated 8 years ago. The real rambunctious Trump supporters are not party people and you have to be a party person to become a delegate to the national.

  13. “Cruz is maneuvering to have a majority of delegates at the convention who support him and will vote for him on the second ballot.”

That’s not a sentence. What does it mean?

    March 25, 2016 at 12:46 pm

  14. “Scott Walker predicts that if there’s an “open convention” then the nominee will NOT be Trump, Cruz or Kasich.”

Of course, he’s hoping that it will be Scott Walker–and so am I. I am so sorry that he pulled out even before the first votes were cast, and still think he’s got the real cojones (and not the macho posturing of the two left) to do the job. Walker-Martinez 2016!
