The Cruz monster grows stronger

There’s a WaPo article about Cruz’s new successes getting his people selected as delegates in Colorado and North Dakota. Cruz isn’t just outmaneuvering Trump, he’s outmaneuvering the GOPe people who think that by stopping Trump, that allows them to get a moderate Republican nominated. (People are talking about Paul Ryan this week but it could any of a number of moderate Republicans, even Susana Martinez.) The GOPe is going to discover that by stopping Trump, they only enabled the Cruz monster. Nate Silver, although he has always been wrong about Trump, agrees with me that the GOPe won’t be able to stop Cruz at a contested convention. Nate Silver is clueless about the mindset of blue collar whites who support Trump, but I’m sure he understands the political inside game very well.

In yesterday’s WaPo, there’s an article explaining why they believe Cruz will be righteously schlonged by the Democratic candidate if he wins the Republican nomination. Cruz is starting to be noticed by the MSM. Until this week, the MSM assumed he had no chance of winning the nomination so covering him closely wasn’t that important. That has changed.
For example, you will hear more about Cruz’ belief that women who were raped shouldn’t be allowed to have an abortion.

Cruz was very smart to refuse to put on a cheesehead hat. Nothing ruins a candidate’s image of gravitas worse than wearing a stupid hat. Dukakis lost the election to Bush 41 because he wore a stupid-looking helmet while driving around in a tank.

  1. Your mistake is in thinking that Cruz isn’t a part of GOPe. His past associations with the Bush family would argue against that.

  2. Releasing a violent black murder from prison who went on to rape and murder another white woman didn’t have anything to do with it?

If Trump comes up short of 1237, any chance that he and the GOPe collaborate to stop Cruz? How about this deal:

    1. The party nominates Greg Abbot on the 4th or 5th ballot with Kasich as his running mate, completely cutting out lyin’ Ted.
    2. Trump gets a prime speaking spot at the convention and a promise that he will be a guest of honor at the White House should Abbot win the nomination. Should Abbot lose, Trump will have more credibility with the party for a 2020 run. The GOPe will send word to their minions in the press to start praising Trump’s negotiating saavy and statesmen like sacrifice for the good of the Party.
    3. Fox agrees to pump the shit out of Trump’s book chronicling the events of his 2016 primary campaign.

This deal seems to have a lot going for it. Abbot is a great politician and appeals to all segments of the Party and he would be very strong against Hillary. Even if he didn’t win he would spare the GOP the down ballot carnage that Lyin’ Ted would bring. Trump’s brand has been badly hurt by this campaign season but his willingness to compromise will instantly restore a lot of his credibility with Republicans and Republican leaning independents that he has alienated. It would also be a boon for Ivanka’s future political career. From the GOP’s perspective, such a move would reunite the party, which the GOP needs not to win in November, but merely to avoid utter annihilation.

    • How old is Trump in 2020? 72? I don’t see him running again.

      • Trump likely sees himself as immortal and invincible and there are many heads of state in their 80s.

  3. Cruz laid out his policies in A TIME FOR TRUTH.

    1) A flat income tax (he praises Steve Forbes).

    2) Abolish the IRS.

    3) Audit the Federal Reserve.

    4) A balanced budget constitutional amendment.

    5) Repeal Obamacare.

    6) No restrictions on gun ownership.

    7) “Like the United States, Israel is a nation of immigrants.”

    8) “There is no stronger advocate for legal immigration in the Senate than I am.”

  4. It’s pretty simple at this point. Trump gets the majority of delegates, or Cruz gets the nomination on the second or third ballet.

  5. I can’t believe Cruz will be the nominee. Unless the GOPe is completely bonkers. Which might be the case.

His appearance in the Bronx – who was responsible for that fiasco?

BTW, OT, but you’ve totally ignored the Panama Papers. Hillary is not directly mentioned but close associates of hers were, and she was responsible for pushing a disastrous free trade agreement with Panama a few years ago – which Bernie warned against.

On certain subjects, Bernie really is very sensible.

  6. Cruz isn’t just outmaneuvering Trump, he’s outmaneuvering the GOPe people who think that by stopping Trump, that allows them to get a moderate Republican nominated.

No. The GOPe wants to Lose With Cruz. They will use Cruz to stop Trump, then they will help the media and the Democrats destroy Cruz.

Then in 2020, the GOPe will put on their “Otis the Sweaty” hats and say, “Stupid TruCons, stupid Christians, see what happens when you don’t let us pick the candidate? Your stupid populist and conservative candidates have NO CHANCE. Always vote for our Electable Moderate (TM).”

    April 7, 2016 at 9:09 am

    • They will not help the Dems against Cruz. They will fight for him as hard as they can. Not because they like Cruz, but in order to minimize the down ballot carnage.

      • No, they despise him so they will help to destroy him to teach the stupid TruCons a 1964-style lesson they will not soon forget. They think down-ballot losses can be recouped in 2018.

        April 7, 2016 at 11:16 am

    • But who will be listening in 2020?

      • The GOPe thinks the stupid populists, TruCons and Christians will all Come Home To Jesus in 2020 after their candidates crash and burn in 2016.

        April 7, 2016 at 11:14 am

      • The populists aren’t stupid and even the GOPe knows they won’t be coming home unless they change their message, as seen by Ryan’s denunciation of the “makers and takers” ideology that has defined the GOP since Reagan.

The Stupid Christians and TruCons are fundamentally retarded and they will never learn. I suspect even the GOPe knows that.

        April 7, 2016 at 12:24 pm

      • Well what they don’t seem to get is that the stupid populists, TruCons and Christians will be too tiny a percentage of the population to ever elect a President.
