Pizza Rat video was a hoax!

Gothamist present evidence that the Pizza Rat video, as well as many other viral rat videos, show rats that were trained to do tricks and are not regular feral rats serendipitously filmed.

I think the lesson here is that videos that are so awesome that they go viral just don’t just happen by chance. This is analogous to the moral that if something seems too good to be true, that’s because it’s not true.

  1. Well, in the bookings the rats eat what the inmates eat, which is cereal, milk, bread, salami and mustard. I would give everything to the nams. NAMs drop crumbs and pieces while eating, so the rats have what to eat. If they were to give pizza in the bookings, rats would eat pizza. What’s the hoax? There is no hoax. A rat can totally eat anything that a NAM can eat.

  5. Smart people are easily fooled. Even I who have met many rats in my day, of all sizes ( wharf rats, subway rats, dumpster rats, and many pet rats (Norwegian rats according to the pet store web sites, but still just rats like we are just humans)) was fooled. I would like to see a post on what we can learn from the positive aspects of rats and cockroaches (cockroaches are like the crows or dogs of their world – smart like crows – and loyal, at least to other cockroaches, like dogs are loyal to us). All Pro-atheist videos are similarly “serendipitously” filmed. By leaving out ” the rest of the story”. From Pizza Rats to the Good News. The NY Post and Daily News should not have put the Pizza Rats on the cover!!! But the Post and the Daily News are not the “Good News” of course.

    • The Talmud has a discussion on your question:

The Talmud – Eruvin 100b – cites the following verse concerning the One Creator of all life: “He teaches us from the animals of the land, and from the birds of the heavens He makes us wise” (Job 35:11).
“He teaches us from the animals of the land” – For the Creator implanted within them wisdom in order to teach us (Rashi on the Talmud).
      Dear Friends,
The Talmud cites the above verse from Job in order to convey the message that each creature within the creation has something to teach us. As human beings created in the Divine image, we have the spiritual ability to recognize the trait within each creature that can serve as a good example for us; thus, the Talmud cites the following examples in the name of Rabbi Yochanan:
“If the Torah had not been given, we would have learned modesty from the cat, the avoidance of theft from the ant, marital fidelity from the dove, and good manners in marital relations from the rooster, who appeases his mate before having relations with her.” (Ibid)
The Talmud only elaborates on the good manners of the rooster, so the commentator, Rashi, explains the other examples in the following manner:
“Modesty from the cat” – When the cat eliminates wastes from its body, it buries it; moreover, it does not eliminate in front of people.
“The avoidance of theft from the ant” – The ant relies on its honest labor, for it stores food in the summer for what it needs in the winter, as it is written, “Go to the ant, you sluggard, observe her ways and become wise; for though there is neither officer nor guard, nor ruler over her, she prepares her food in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest” (Proverbs 6:6-8). In addition, the ant does not take the food of another ant.
“Marital fidelity from the dove” – The dove only has relations with its mate.

So here is my quesrion: why does the Talmud assume that we would only learn positive traits from the animals? What would prevent us from learning the negative traits? Lion?

  6. This video is about a New York terrier club using their dogs to kill rats. Not that you can actually control rats with dogs, traps or poison. They breed too fast. The only way to really control rats is to eliminate their food source. I recommend strict regulations on restaurants, garbage disposal, etc

    • That’s dangerous for the dog. What if a rat ate poison? The dog may die.

      May 2, 2016 at 1:50 am

      • I doubt the dogs would get one that’s been poisoned. But the dogs don’t eat the rats. So there’s no danger anyway. Rats carry diseases. But as long as you don’t let the dog chew/eat the rats it’s usually not a problem.

    • Man, those people are stupid. They might as well come back during the day and swat flies.

  7. All viral videos are either staged or became famous via some gatekeeper (i.e. fluff blurb on a news report). Organic virality hardly exist especially nowadays.

  9. if something seems too good to be true, that’s because it’s not

You mean the rats in New York aren’t so large and aggressive that they come up and take whole slices of pizza off the table in broad daylight? The fairy-tale image of New York is shattered. Don’t despair, however, just watch these videos and realize the city still has its charm. They are 100% authentic un-trained feral rats dragging large objects around the streets of New York..

    Burrito rat.

    Donut rat.

Pizza rat? Try dead rat rat.

    Pigeon rat.

A rat may not actually steal pizza off your table when you visit New York, but that is only because rats don’t like pizza. You should try Taco Bell or Dunkin Donuts.
