The hundred thousand jihadists among us
According to the NY Times, there are “up to 10,000 F.B.I. terrorism investigations open at any given time.”
And remember that Omar was not an open investigation; although investigated twice, both times his investigation was closed.
This number reveals the scope of the problem. There are at least 100,000 sympathizers of jihadist Islam if you consider investigations that were closed and the likely fact that the majority of these people were smart enough not to publicly proclaim their support for jihad and attract the attention of the FBI in the first place.
Why have there been so few actual terrorist attacks if there are so many radical Islamists in the country? Because they are chicken. Because their lives are too comfortable to throw it away. Because the FBI has actually done a good job of preventing like-minded jihadists form getting together or from receiving instructions from outside of the country. But because of the principle of copycatism, after San Bernardino and Orlando, it’s inevitable that there will now be a lot more of these types of lone-wolf Islamist jihad incidents, and there’s a good chance there will be another one before the election in November.
Also, you can’t blame the FBI, at least not the low-level agents who actually do the real work, for failing to catch Omar before he went jihad. There are thousands and thousands of Omars out there and there isn’t a fraction of the manpower needed to have an agent assigned to follow around every one of them.
