Donald Trump’s post-terrorist attack tweets

I think that Trump should wait at least a day before tweeting anything that has an I-told-you-so vibe to it. I grade this tweet a C. It could have been worse.

I don’t know why he needs to postpone that. The attack happened in a foreign country, it doesn’t directly impact the United States. He should have kept the news conference and used the opportunity to talk about Islamic terrorism in addition to naming his Vice President.

Theory proposed by a commenter is that Trump needs an extra day to re-write his speech to focus more on terrorism. And I suppose it would be prudent to wait until it’s confirmed that the truck driver in France was a Muslim.

  1. I dunno, I think you are kvetching a little here. He’s auditioning to be the leader of the free world ™, shouldn’t he say something? His tweet wasn’t punitive. He just said what he’s been saying all along. The tweet was in effect him saying, “I’m holding your hand, I’m listening, I feel your pain. I’m not some out of touch Mandarin sitting in a gated tower.”

  2. Three answers to your “I don’t know why”: 1) tact. 2) let the news cycle of this latest terror attack play out, without him cutting it short. The more discussion about the attack, the better for Trump. 3) to give Trump a chance to reconsider his choice. Michael Dougherty thinks he may flip to an ex-general now. Another theory:

  3. Trump’s post-Orlando speech was great, but it was almost entirely ignored by the MSM. The MSM can’t ignore a similar speech if it’s given in conjunction with his VP announcement. Trump and his people could use an extra day to get this right.

  4. That’s what I think. He might pick a new VP with strong national security credentials.

    • Giuliani time!

      • Giuliani time!

Certainly Rudy is old looking enough. Which Republicans love.

Pence is only 57 but looks 77. Again, Republicans love the look of death in their candidates.

Pence not only looks like death he is also death to Trump’s ideas.

Pence is pro everything Trump pretends to be against which shows that Trump doesn’t really believe what he is saying. He’s just saying what he has picked up from Miller and Sessions.

Too bad. I’m not even going to vote. Doesn’t matter in my state anyway.

      • trump and giuliani are both new yorkers. that would be unconstitutional.

        July 15, 2016 at 8:21 am

      • There is nothing unconstitutional about having a ticket from the state state. The restriction is on the electors. The New York electors would not be able to support both halves of the ticket. Thus there would be the unlikely possibility that Trump would win New York and its electoral votes. However those Trump electors would then have to throw away their VP votes (on some random person). If the race were close that could result the senate picking the VP.

That said, Giuliani has at no point been a serious contender for national office.

  5. I just hope he’s together and consistent enough to not be changing his pick behind the scenes.

  6. Lion, please comment on these two Pence tweets, which are diametrically opposed to the core platform principles that Trump is running on:

Trump’s pick of Pence makes me believe Trump is not serious about his core platform positions and will let them slide, except for the wall, whenever politically expedient. It severely dampens my enthusiasm for Trump as a candidate.

    • Great, he can tweet about that stuff while he’s attending funerals; meanwhile President Trump will be getting the wall built and deporting illegal aliens.

      • How many VP candidates have been on record contradicting the core tenets of the platform that they’re running on?

  7. The Left exists and wins (and causes these terror events) by politicizing everything the minute it happens. Trump is right on world events, Trump wants to beat the Left and win, he should speak up immediately anytime something like this happens so no one can forget or deny that he’s right and the Left is wrong. He should beat it into minds of everyone listening every time he gets the chance and he’s doing that. Good for him.

I just saw Hillary call into O’Reilly on FoxNews. Incredible, Trump has forced the Hag to come out of hiding and answer live questions on current events on conservative media outlets.

    • Absolutely Trump should take advantage of this incident to bolster his campaign. He just needs to be smart about it.

  8. How many more terrorist attacks will it take for Marine Le Pen to win the Presidency?

  9. A stupid guest on CNN said that you can’t blame immigration because this guy was possibly a Tunisian Frenchman. Talk about being brain dead.

This is why you don’t allow these immigrants in the first place.

  10. The sad thing is Trump has to trumpet that this is another event that shows him prescient. The vast majority of Americans are apolitical dolts. At my city’s facebook news sites, there is hardly any comment on this event and how the two prez nominees have two vastly different policy positions that may have great impact on whether these events become as common here as France.

  11. There is a worldwide war on westerners; i.e. whites. Time to wake up to this fact. They don’t love us for our diversity.

    July 14, 2016 at 10:55 pm

  12. Obama will need time to “untangle the motives” of the driver.

“Diversity Is Our Strength”; he lied.

Revenge Killing: ISIS Supporters Celebrate Nice Attack
“…ISIS militants have been urging supporters to run westerners over with vehicles since 2014, when Abu Mohammed al Adnani,
a spokesman for the Islamic State, urged the group’s supporters to kill “disbelieving American or European –
especially the spiteful and filthy French – or an Australian, or a Canadian, or any other disbeliever from the disbelievers waging war,
including the citizens of the countries that entered into a coalition against the Islamic State, then rely upon Allah,
and kill him in any manner or way, however it may be,” he said in 2014. “Smash his head with a rock, or slaughter him with a knife,
or run him over with your car, or throw him down from a high place, or choke him, or poison him…”

  13. “I don’t know why he needs to postpone that.”

The muslim terrorist attacks in France help Trump because everyone knows Hillary is weak on national security. These attacks will dominate the news cycle over the weekend which in turn will help Trump. By delaying his announcement Trump can benefit from a news cycle about his VP, without having the impact drowned out by the attacks.

    July 14, 2016 at 11:44 pm

    • Agree. The news coverage of the attacks tomorrow and in to the weekend is basically a free multi million dollar ad campaign for The Donald. It would be foolish of him to give the media anything else to talk about.

      July 15, 2016 at 4:15 am

  14. Trump – “horrible”, “horrific”
    Obama – a “tragedy”

Tragedy (def): an event causing great suffering, destruction, and distress, such as a serious accident, crime, or natural catastrophe.

Just a tragedy, then? Not a barbarous and evil attack designed to strike at the heart of the French Republic and of Western civilization?

    July 15, 2016 at 1:40 am

  15. I suspect that announcing the VP pick before the convention was not Trump’s idea, and he wanted it to remain a surprise until the convention. Practical reasons (media scrutiny) might make that impossible. Still, any reason to draw out the reveal he’ll gladly accept.

    July 15, 2016 at 1:41 am

  16. I don’t know why he needs to postpone that. The attack happened in a foreign country, it doesn’t directly impact the United States.

“donald trump is insensitive, and doesn’t understand how the world works. we, the establishment, understand some bad stuff happened in france, BUT what we we really need to discuss is the short-fingered vulgarians unsuitability to be commander-in-chief for the next week. isn’t that the real lesson of nice?”
