Melania Trump vs Nancy Reagan

Presidents sometimes have to deal with wives who are less intelligent than themselves.

Nancy Reagan consulted with an astrologer to determine Ronald’s schedule. Compared to that, Melania inserting some copied paragraphs into a speech she gave herself is no big deal. (And yes, the copied paragraphs appear to have originated from Melania herself and not a rogue speechwriter.) Unlike Joe Biden, she did this without mens rea because she didn’t know the rules. And unlike Joe Biden, she’s not next in line for the presidency.

Trump relies a lot more on his three oldest children for advice than he does his wife, and his three oldest children seem to be very intelligent and capable.

Garr wrote in a comment to a previous post:

These people wouldn’t be trashy if they knew their proper places in the scheme of things. But they don’t. And Trump can’t even control his trashy wife. How is he going to deal with Putin and Erdogan?

Garr’s point was that Melania should have known she isn’t that smart and shouldn’t have attempted to change the speech that Jared Kushner’s people gave her. However, I assure Garr that Trump won’t have a problem dealing with Putin and Erdogan because he doesn’t have sex with them.

  1. Melania’s proper place in the scheme of things is to look pretty and mouth anodyne platitudes.

She did that perfectly — even though they weren’t her anodyne platitudes.

We are not going to see any pushy bitch co-presidency wannabe policy-wonk crap from her like we did from Hillary Clinton 1992-2000. Therefore she is not a problem.

    • To be fair, Obama’s anodyne platitudes were not hers either. And why does a Harvard grad need a speechwriter anyway?

      • Not really sure how I feel about Melania’s speech, but at least I now have a reason to learn the meaning of the word “anodyne.” That’s why I love this website. It serves as my own person improvement vehicle. It’s one of the reasons I still read and post here despite all the guido-bashing.

    • So far Melania’s qualifications look far better than anyone else for first lady, possibly in the history of the US.

  3. “Presidents sometimes have to deal with wives who are less intelligent than themselves.”

Haha, quick, name five presidents with wives more intelligent than themselves.

  4. Anyone noticed that everyone, media in particular, is now intently comparing Melania to the FLOTUS? How is that for assuming the sale. I wonder how many in the media are subconsciously thinking President Trump by now.

Even if it was a mistake to begin with, and I’m not sure it was because it seems like such irresistible media bait*, I wouldn’t put it beyond the Trump campaign to quickly evaluate what happened, decide on a counter, let the media frenzy build for a couple of days, then satisfyingly close it down.

    * with a backup in case the journos were snoozing, “He will never, ever give up. And, most importantly, he will never, ever, let you down.”

  5. But they don’t. And Trump can’t even control his trashy wife.

She’s not trashy, in terms of appearance at least. Models are usually a few points above average in intelligence and stylish, which Melania is.

    • Hi, UJ. (Thanks, Lion!) I don’t mean that she’s inherently, in her deep self or even in her normal social being, trashy. I just mean that she’s out of place. She should be a mommy with lots of kids. Those kids can grow up to become the reliable retainers of true gentlemen. I look at my girl-students at the prole colleges where I adjunct and think, “They’re such nice young women; they’d make sweet wives and mommies. What the hell are they doing here, plagiarizing Wikipedia and looking at Facebook in this nasty classroom where they don’t belong?” It’s being out-of-place that makes people trashy. And, yes, I’m probably out of place as a teacher. Since I’m half-Jewish, I should simultaneously be a monk and a Talmudic scholar whose practical wife runs the grocery store (like the Chofetz Chaim). Everybody’s out of place now. Gentlemen should rule our society, but the gentlemen (Romney, Jeb Bush) are paralyzed and ashamed of themselves, so tradesmen like Trump take their places.)

      July 20, 2016 at 9:40 pm

      • Romney is the son of a tradesman. Jeb is the great-grandson of one. No American should be ashamed of being a tradesman. Tradesmen are better leaders than dreadful lawyers, academics, and professional politicians.

        July 21, 2016 at 12:33 am

      • Tarl, I agree that no one should be ashamed of being a tradesman, and I agree that today a tradesman such as Trump is likely to be a better leader than “lawyers, academics, and professional politicians” would be; it’s just unfortunate that this is now the case. Everything’s messed up.

      • THIS!

Again and again I see attractive and sometimes sweet 20 something women in some dumb ass job and I just want to scream at them: “What are you doing here wasting your precious fertile time with shitty ass work? Marry a good guy and have kids and let him happily support you! Open up your deadening 9-5 job for some shlub who actually needs it!”

        July 21, 2016 at 5:27 pm

  6. She’s also too svelte to be considered trashy.

  7. She’s probably pretty smart. She knows sometime like 5 languages, apparently. She doesn’t have a degree although why would she have one, when she can be a super model.

    July 20, 2016 at 6:56 pm

    • I think I read somewhere that before she became a famous model, Melania was in college studying architecture.
