Trump goes to Mexico

Sounds like a brilliant idea to make him look more presidential. Let’s hope it’s not a trap.

UPDATE: It wasn’t a trap, therefore it was brilliant strategy to make Trump appear presidential.

  1. Let’s hope they don’t try to take him out

  2. Are there American voters in Mexico? Why is he going there? Is gonna go to Africa after that?

    August 31, 2016 at 12:05 pm

    • He’s going to Mexico to reassure business leaders on both sides of the border that he’s reasonable. And to reassure American voters that he can be presidential.

      August 31, 2016 at 2:05 pm

  3. It’s a gutsy move for sure. The media will spin it as a disaster, but I’m willing to bet that Trump is coming to the bargaining table with a softened position. If he can leave Mexico with bragging rights to a “productive meeting”, he can sell his immigration plan as a feasible policy.

In any event, his Mexico visit will dominate the news cycle for a few days.

    August 31, 2016 at 12:39 pm

    • “The media will spin it as a disaster,”

Stop the silly childish paranoia. The media have done nothing of the sort. I saw an MSM report that accurately reported the trip was a success. Even the Latin American NPR reporter tweeted that Trump “owned” the Mexican president.

      August 31, 2016 at 8:18 pm

  4. It’s probably a trap. If I were Pena Nieto I’d stage a confrontation with the most sympathetic possible deportees; 5 year old girls, amputees, rape victims, a mother separated from her daughter, anything. Put cameras all over it and have lots of crying.

    August 31, 2016 at 12:54 pm

  5. Basically going to kiss a few future illegal immigrant babies and show hes a nice guy and NOT WAYYCISS.

Im sure the globalists via slim will try to ruin the photo op though. Perhaps a frail mexican women nun with down sydrome will accuse trump of rape.

Or better yet. Anyone accuse trump of rape.

  6. Trump down by 6.5 in the HuffPo aggregator. Most of the Left is so delusional they still think that Trump is declining in the polls but the more perceptive of them can see that Trump is closing in on Crooked Hillary and that his pivot is real. He is tied in Reuters, down by 3 in UPI, up by 3 in USC and down by 1 in Gravis.

The other recent polls all have him down by 5 and the only recent, credible outliers have him down by 7. Hil’s unfavorables are rising and I expect her to be more unpopular than Trump by the time of the debates.

After we take power, first order of business is a ceasefire with the Left while we utterly exterminate the TruCon scum. There will be no mercy.

By the way, the intelligent Left is very worried about this Trump visit, they know it is bad for them. The delusional Left thinks that Mexico if pulling a fast one on Trump.

    • National polls mean nothing. How is he doing in Iowa, Ohio, Florida?

      August 31, 2016 at 8:39 pm

    • Otis you are right, but the left will never agree to a cease fire because they know we will come for them next. It doesn’t matter… The cucks are so weak the TruCon slime can be wiped from this Earth without needing a temporary peace.

First the right wing cucks and foreign infiltrators. Grahmnasty, John McCuck, Paul Faggot Ryan, Nicky Hailey, Bobgay Jindal, all California Republican politicians, etc…

Then we will get to the main course… The left… The universities will burn… Ney die of privation from the withdrawal of taxpayer dollars, the NGO’s will wither… From a withdrawal of taxpayer dollars, finance will be returned to a conservative profession once the free market is restored, medicine will once again be free market once anti-monopoly laws start being enforced. SJW’s and their safe spaces will simply be destroyed by force.

Oh sweet tears… Sweet sweet tears…

  7. As usual, Josh Marshall has it exactly right. Barring strong evidence to the contrary, it’s usually best to assume Trump has no idea what he is doing.

“Trump’s Razor helps here. It’s tempting to assume that there’s some angle Trump has here, some plan or understanding with Peña Nieto to make this not as silly a decision as it appears to be. I’m tempted because how could they think this was a good idea? Trump’s Razor tells us to resist this temptation. ‘The stupidest scenario possible that can be reconciled with the available facts.’ I think that’s what we have here. It’s as stupid as it looks. Who knows? Maybe Trump will handle this deftly and it’ll be a huge success. But Trump’s Razor has yet to fail me. So I’m going to stick with it.”

  8. I don’t like it; maybe it’s gutsy or maybe it’s pandering. Could be potentially dangerous.

Trump should focus on winning the presidency, then let the Mexican goons come to him in the White House.

Mexico is not, nor has it EVER been “our friend” per Dubya Bush. Quite the contrary.

    August 31, 2016 at 2:15 pm

  9. Trump could tell the Mex Prez: look, we’re going to start enforcing our immigration laws so lots of people are going to start heading your way soon. And we will build the wall. These things are happening. But I tell you what, when we begin trade renegotiations we can discuss US help in dismantling the Mexican drug cartels with special ops and intelligence.

  10. A typically Trump high risk/high reward strategy. The perception, especially upon undecideds, will be of an already elected president. Of course there is danger but that’s what leaders are supposed to confront. By the way, most polls now show him winning even with absurd distributions like Reuters’ (Male 42%/Female 58%, which can only be true in a country ravaged by civil war). Go Trump!

    August 31, 2016 at 4:32 pm

  11. Looks like it went fine:

    August 31, 2016 at 4:41 pm

  12. It makes him look brave, decisive and energetic.

Maybe I’m becoming a little too Scott Adams-ized, but I’m beginning to fall for this master persuader stuff. The point is to suggest things and let people take it from there.

Hillary is looking very old. Stuff about her health is all over the Internet. Meanwhile Trump is bouncing around like a 20 year old. I’m surprised Lion isn’t making more of the Hillary health rumors.

    August 31, 2016 at 4:50 pm

    • I just saw an MSM report on the trip, ABC Evening News. Of note:

-Both Trump & Hillary were invited but only Trump went
-The reporter was quite respectful to Trump in fact, positive
-said “the gamble paid off”; emphasized that his meeting with the Mexican went well
-contrasted this with Hillary who has spent the last two weeks fund raising among the rich & powerful
-said Hillary has only made 4 public appearances, disapprovingly
-emphasized that Hill refuses to answer questions about general topics, but esp. the foundation hijinx

I was pretty amazed at how favorable the reporter was towards Trump, and how sour she (it was a woman, amazingly) was to Hillary.

I usually hate the MSM but fair is fair.

      August 31, 2016 at 6:48 pm

      • Thank you madame for watching, so we don’t have to.

        Your report is appreciated!

        Interesting development…

        September 1, 2016 at 1:45 am

      • That’s very interesting. Apart from even the MSM getting a bit restless, if Hillary can’t be wheeled out of her hyperbaric tent even for that, her health might be even worse than it looks. That was a pretty important visit for Trump and he got to run it unopposed … Disastrous no-show.

        September 1, 2016 at 5:11 am

      • @Thin,

You’re welcome. Another takeaway from the report is that the few glimpses of Hillary showed her looking very tired and overweight. She looked like a waddling granny. Not flattering images.

This Mexico visit and the Phoenix speech continue to reverberate. The turnaround is remarkable. Hillary looks like the one who is crumbling now.

  13. I watched the Mexican press conference with the president. Trump looked and sounded very presidential, which is to say, cautious, moderate, and pragmatic, with a fair dose of spin and double-talk.

If the goal was to make him seem unscary, mission accomplished. If the goal was to make his policy feelings vis-a-vis Mexico and immigration any clearer, it was a flop.

  15. Trump and Nieto just held a joint press conference where they both announced the wall would be built. This is a major coup for Trump. It gives him credibility as well as discredited the critics who said he would never build it or deport the illegals.

    August 31, 2016 at 7:11 pm

    • They didn’t announce the wall would be built. But Trump did cleverly get the Mexican president to agree with the principle of building a wall. Trump noted that one of their six “shared understandings” or whatever was that both America and Mexico have a right to secure their border with walls and other structures. When you put it like that, it sounds perfectly sane. No country or president would ever disagree with the notion that, in theory, any country can build anything it wants to secure its border.

Trump said he did not discuss getting the Mexicans to pay for the wall with the president, which makes sense because that’s an idiotic idea the entire Mexican political class has repeatedly said will never happen.

      August 31, 2016 at 11:05 pm

      • Trump has already said how he’s going to make mexico pay for it. He’s going to tax remittances. Why would he discuss that with Nieto?

        September 1, 2016 at 2:46 am

      • Dude.. The Mexicans are going to help finance that wall regardless of your love for your Mexican Gardner and there is nothing any of the Mexican politicians can do about it.mexico needs America more than the opposite. They will pay.

  16. I think the Mexico trip went about as well as it could. Trump looked presidential, and he and the Mexican president looked like they could work together constructively. Both of them spoke about mutually beneficial ties.

I don’t think that Hispanics will flock to Trump, but a lot of college educated whites will feel more comfortable with Trump, and that’s the group he can persuade and needs to persuade.

    August 31, 2016 at 7:11 pm

  17. Trump down by 2 in the latest Fox poll, although only in the 4 way. Head to head he is down 6.

This is interesting and I don’t know what to make of it.

    • It means that having Johnson and Stein in the race helps Trump more than Clinton. Maybe Clinton cuts a deal with Stein to make it a 3-way race.

      August 31, 2016 at 10:36 pm

  18. You want to know how you know this visit was successful?

The Mexican people hated it and are bashing their Pres on social media and the Left are losing their minds at DKos and NeoGaf.

  20. Trump has been brilliant the last week or two – the Louisiana visit to help flood victims showed his humanitarian side and highlighted Hillary’s no show, the reach out to Blacks who have been screwed by 50 years of Democrat failures showed he’s not a racist, and now he meets with the Mexican head of state like he’s already the POTUS showed how presidential he can be. 3 for 3 and the media is about to jump off a bridge. I’m lovin’ it!

    August 31, 2016 at 9:38 pm

  21. It’s important to remember that the conventions were held very early this year. The last two elections, they weren’t over until after Labor Day. It isn’t even September yet, so The Donald has plenty of time to close the gap.

    August 31, 2016 at 10:41 pm

  22. Weird. The articles I’m seeing people post on FB are mentioning how Donald Trump made a fool of himself during the press conference with the Mexican president. Here’s a link to what Conservative Clown Car — a liberal FB page — posted on their wall. “President Nieto spoke glowingly about the virtues of NAFTA & free trade as Trump stood silently. As he criticized Trump’s plan to build the wall, he stood there. And as he stressed cooperation between the US and Mexico, Trump stood there.”

    Some comments:
“Looking dumbfounded as he faced comments from a world leader is how Trump would look when confronted by all the other world leaders–he simply does not understand foreign relations…”

    “Is he high?”

“It’s like Anthony Villaraigosa[former mayor of Los Angeles] said, ‘He came in like a pitbull and came out like a Chihuahua’s'”.

“Trumpleforeskin doesn’t look so Trumpy now, does he? You’ve got to show up to these events looking presidential when the world is watching you…”

most of the commeneters lambasted Trump for being too afraid to talk about Mexico paying glthe wall and looking weak.

    September 1, 2016 at 3:44 am

  23. Democrat strategist Howard Wolfson tweeted: “If you believe Trump needed to pivot, moderate and look more Presidential, that event was a home run.”
