Election of Donald Trump means the Messiah is coming?

with 25 comments

Aryeh Dri, the chairman of Israel’s Shas Party (representing ultra-Orthodox Jews), says:

If such a miracle like this can happen we have already reached the days of the Messiah, therefore we are really in the era of the birth pangs of the Messiah, when everything has been flipped to the good of the Jewish people.

  1. Isn’t that the ultra orthodox crew that used to hand out dollar bills in Brooklyn and built that rabbi’s home just like the one in Israel?

    • No, not associated with that.

Aryeh Deri – Minister of Internal Affairs between 1988 and 1993. Convicted of taking $155,000 in bribes while serving as Interior Minister and given a three-year jail sentence in 2000.

      Still has hutzpah to pontificate.

    • With guys like Deri in the Knesset we very far from the Messianic age.

  2. Perfect example of a primitive demagogue profanting religion to advance his political agenda. Of course substantively it’s pure nonsense. An American president doesn’t determine the fate of the Jewish people. It’s the actions of the Jewish people that do that. Deri is amazingly stupid when it comes to religion.

  3. Representing Sephardic Orthodox Jews, specifically.

What was funny about that speech is that he used it to bash Reform Judaism. Ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israel truly loathe the Reform and Conservative movements.

    • And rightfully so, not so much the conservatives but the reformists are basically secular, they are not religious at all and there is not one religious low which bind them. I can understand their use in America as a cultural club for secular Jews, but in Israel it is just retarded. You can be secular in Israel and still have Jewish identity by the virtue of being the majority, speaking the language and subsequently having a rich Hebrew culture, fighting for your country etc. like any other normal group in this world. There is nothing more ridiculous than a Reformist Lesbian Rabbi preaching about Tikun Olam with the religious knowledge of a 5 years old Hassidic kid. The religion Israeli seculars are not practicing is the orthodox one and so it should be, anyway the reformists are going to fade away by intermarriage.

    • The Reform and Conservative “movements” are truly loathsome, as is the Leftist pseudo-Orthodoxy of Avi Weiss (I think that’s his name — one of his minions is the “rabbi” of a homo/witch-shul in Park Slope made up of people who rebelled against the stupid Chabad barons of that neighborhood who run the 9th Street shul as well as a couple of vassal-shuls in Windsor Terrace and Prospect Heights. These dumb Chabad fuggers suck in SWPLs who dug the Friday night Carlbach parties in college and then find out that they’ve become the serfs of morons and start up their own clubs where they can celebrate their homosexuality and bitchiness without any disapproving grownups around.)

      • Garr,

Is it too much for you to learn to use punctuation?

      • Gothamette,

I’m sure Garr already notices you and appreciates that you have written many sharply-worded and womanly-wit-infused letters to the editor. No need to prod him.

    • The wailing and gnashing of teeth by the Haaretz SJWs as a framing device makes it all the funnier.

  4. Trump’s election is definitely good news for Israel. It’s also good news for Europe as he’s spoken in favor of Brexit. The EU was already in trouble. With the US and UK both pushing I expect plenty of dominoes to fall.

  6. AFAIK, aren’t the orthodox against serving in the IDF? If so, that’s kind effed up if you ask me…

    • Depends on the Orthodox. Deri is the leader of Shas, most Shas voters serve in the army as have most Shas politicians. But Shas politicians would never let their children serve in the army. They would also never let their children go to Sephardic yeshivas despite the fact that Shas is an Sephardic nationalist party.

So you have a party that was formed explicitly on the basis of fighting anti Sephardi discrimination amongst the Ashekanzi religious and whose main function in the government is to ensure funding for their Shas schools, being led by a bunch of guys who all use their political connections to get their children in Ashkenazic yeshivas that they claim are discriminating against Sephardim. And the party is against military service despite being made up of IDF veterans and getting the bulk of its votes from IDF vets.

At least American politics makes sense, Israeli politics are just wacky.

    • Elite units of the IDF are manned by strictly observant fighters. “Orthodox” in this context just means “strictly observant”. Religious Zionists are as orthodox as Satmars.

  9. It took Hillary 4.5 years to pay off the debt from her 2008 presidential run during a time when donors were more than happy to hand over money to Bill while she was still Secretary of State and widely expected to run again.

Safe to say that this time, her debt will outlive her.

She borrowed $20 million? Someone gave that to her? And she paid it off? Is that the source of her corruption?
