Nikki Haley affirmative action pick?

with 51 comments

If a white male governor had been so tepid in endorsing Trump, would he have been picked to be ambassador to the U.N., without any diplomatic experience?

On the other hand, no one was more traitorous to Trump than Mitt Romney, and he’s said to be under serious consideration for Secretary of State.

  1. If Haley is dumb enough to take the UN ambassador job, the Lt. Governor of SC, Henry McMaster will become governor. McMaster was an early supporter of Trump and joined him at a SC rally. Ambassador to the U.N. is a real downgrade from being a governor and it would be masterful if Trump fired her quickly.

Three dimensional Chess. Romney, who is no dummy, must be wondering whether he will get an administration gig like former #NeverTrump Haley or be shut out in the cold like Cruz.

      • I’ll call him Bobby Fischer when he figures out a way to bribe the governor of CA, take over the CA legislature, and reform their crazy election laws. You can vote absentee in CA for no reason, up to the day of election, and anyone can vote. I wonder how many of their voters are illegal. Outrageous.

Brown can be bribed, the legislature should simply be dissolved, and a military government installed. But that will have to wait for Trump’s second term.

Until then you remain as hard to impress as ever.

  2. Not AA. The new SC governor is better for 2020 and Nikki Haley was always a pawn or at best a rook. It’s a symbolic gesture to the unplacated that you can still bend the knee and do well. Nobody really cares about this U.N. post, but it’s a move up for her. It’s all win-win.

  3. Wasn’t the hot Democrat chick from Hawaii the other finalist? Seems like Donald just wanted a reasonably attractive woman for a job that is all for show anyeay. Plus one of the first mainstream pols to endorse him now gets promoted to Governor of South Carolina.

    • That’s Tulsi Gabbard. Economically she’s pro Bernie, which is why she was either fired or forced to resign from the DNC earlier this year. But she’s a National Guard officer, has been deployed, and is more aggressive in regards to fighting ISIS. If you need both a cross-the-aisle pick or a diversity pick, she’s a good choice for some sort of Defense or National Security post.

  4. Remember when Nikki Haley hijacked the GOP response to Obama’s State of the Union address to attack her own party’s front-runner for the presidential nomination? Others may have acted worse, but my god did the Republican establishment act like complete shits when the party’s base turned away from them.

That said, Trump is right to make overtures to his critics because his victory, while decisive, was also narrow, and he isn’t going to win re-election in 2020 if he’s still carrying only 46.39% of the national popular vote. Disaffected Republicans are the low-hanging fruit for expanding his coalition. Just don’t pick Romney over Huntsman if you’re angling for that Mormon NeverTrump vote.

This is very very wrong. 1. It denies people basic human rights because of a handicap they have no control over; and (2) they may have insights the normal people don’t have.

  6. The Lieutenant Governor in SC was was very loyal to TRUMP, and really wanted to be governor which as I understand it he will be after Haley takes her UN post. That might have played into the calculus.

  7. Trump needs diversity in his cabinet. Nikki Haley is non-while and female. Trump couldn’t care less about the UN, so not an important appointment.

Democrats point out Haley has no foreign policy experience which would seem to be a requirement for UN ambassador, but at least she is not a UN opponent like John Bolton.

They will probably be kicked off our soil within the decade of his ascendancy and will probably be replaced with some nice Trump branded waterfront property. Along with it will go Haley (a fitting visual of the disloyal scourge pillaging our shores like parasites being deported).

        2) he is rewarding her Lt. governed who will rise to be king in his state once the vermin has been deposed.

Also, we need to placate the establishment as much as possible and convince suburban whites that Trump is going to A) hire good people and B) not start WWIII.

Just need to bring on Romney and it sounds like his DoD pick is going to be a torture opposing, well respected ex general.

  15. I think the Romney pick is priming the pump for 2020. Trump is going after the Mormon vote in Nevada and some of the western states with measurable Mormon populations. Minnesota has a small Mormon population and Mennonites. These states were narrow losses for Trump but will surely be in play for the next cycle.

  16. Of course Haley is an AA pick. Not that he personally cares but others will criticize his cabinet’s “lack of diversity” if he doesn’t have a few. Trump also has a history of hiring women for top positions. Most of his executives were women. So I’d expect him to pick several. Or, at least, more women than minorities. I’d be surprised if he had many blacks. Maybe a couple of people like Sheriff Clark. But his minority picks will probably lean towards non black minorities. With several women and non black minorities it will complicate his opponents efforts to criticize him on diversity. Women and non-black minorities will be irritated if Democrats say they “don’t count” as diversity.

But there are a lot of other reasons to pick her. As others have pointed out, it rewards a loyal Lt Governor to replace her in SC. It provides an olive branch to RINO’s whom he will need to get his policies passed. It will reassure some people to see him pick a moderate, globalist, free trade, daughter of immigrants after he so harshly criticized those things. She’s an outsider in the sense that she’s not a career diplomat. That creates a fresh start with Trump’s own vision rather than continuity with an established career diplomat’s. And it confuses people as to what his agenda is. He likes to keep people off-balance and guessing as a tactical advantage.

    • My diversity equation:

1 Black Male = 2 Women (any race), 1.5 Gay Male, 2 Lesbian Woman, 5 Asian men/women, 1 Native American and 1.5 Latino

      Why?

The most extreme type of evolution in the human experience must be normalised by master in his wish for the Open Border.

This is why many people consider only behaviours towards Magic Negroes to be racist and not towards east and south asians.

  20. Trump doesn’t care a lick about the UN. The appointment of Haley was a sop to the diversity outrage police and a way to throw her out of the governor’s mansion in SC. Better to keep her in the tent (in a job that doesn’t matter) than invite her to join the GOP opposition.

    Jonah

    November 24, 2016 at 5:19 pm

  21. The appointment was definitely made to reward early Trump SC supporter McMaster, who’ll now have the governor spot he’s long coveted without having to run for it. Also Trump can disarma mild critic, Haley, by giving her a high-visibility sinecure. I live in the same neighborhood as McMaster and can attest that he had the Trump signs and endorsement out very early, so he derserves the reward for helping sway an early primary state towards Trump. Smart!
