Betsy DeVos, the cuckservative’s choice for Secretary of Education

What I know about her: born super-rich, married super-rich, Christian, devotes herself to cuckservative educational causes like school vouchers and charter schools.

Because Republicans deny HBD nearly as much as Democrats, vouchers and charter schools will not solve the real problems of education because politicians deny what the real problems are. (Republicans accept the liberal premise that there are no differences in genetic learning potential between students, and the most important problem to be solved in education is the black-white achievement “gap.”)

Those who try to measure the “success” of the vouchers and charter schools will try to determine if test scores have improved for poor, minority and “disadvantaged” kids, and I guarantee you that scores on the highly g-loaded reading and math tests will not improve. If anything, the public schools, with their emphasis on endless drilling for the tests, have maxed out any possible score increases for these kids, and higher quality instruction would probably result in lower scores.

Now, before I write any more, I want to state that I believe that most public schools suck, and that most non-religious private schools provide better education for the students. I wish there were some way that deserving middle class kids could have the opportunity to attend a superior non-religious private school.

But let’s get back to vouchers.

Liberals see public education as a valuable tool in the fight against the spread of prole sects of Christianity. If vouchers allowed parents to take their kids out of public schools, the parents who would care most about this are fundamentalist Christian parents who would send their children to a school where they teach that God created man and other such nonsense. The liberals have a valid point here.

Republicans worship at the altar of “free enterprise,” and believe that anything run by a private organization is going to be superior and more efficient to anything run by the government. But I think the reality is that public education isn’t that expensive. At all decent private schools, tuition tends to be three times the per-pupil cost of public education in the same geographic area. And those private schools also have fund raising drives on top of that, so they spend more like four times as much per student, and they don’t even have to deal with “special needs” students.

The simplest thing we could do to vastly improve the quality of public education is to separate the intelligent children from the less intelligent children. But liberals are adamantly opposed to this because they say it’s racist. And it’s not something that the cuckservatives are behind either, because the cuckservative’s greatest fear is being called a “racist.” And it doesn’t do anything to support their ideas about “free enterprise” and it doesn’t make Christian schools more powerful.

* * *

Joey Junger writes in a comment (to a previous post):

Not that it matters much to me one way or the other, but I seem to remember you saying that you didn’t like using the term “cuckservative.” It looks like it’s part of your working vocabulary now, though. Did something change?

I guess the word is too convenient to describe the type of conservative who is wedded to “free enterprise” and Christian right stuff, while being desperate to demonstrate to liberals and the mainstream media that they are good guys, not racists or misogynists.

* * *

Anyway, bad choice here by Trump. I suspect this was a position that he didn’t care much about, and he let his truecon advisers pick her. And at the same time he could check a gender diversity box!

Although the issues of vouchers and charter schools arouse people’s passions, what the Department of Education mostly does is manage the student loan program. A technocrat manager who could make that work more efficiently and help prevent students from being ripped off by lenders would have been a much better choice. Or imagine if Trump picked Bernie Sanders for this position! It would have been a bold gesture of reaching across the aisle, and Bernie Sanders seems to genuinely care about college students being ripped off by student loan lenders.

  1. It’s worse than you think. She opposed Republicans putting affirmative action on the ballot in Michigan. She wrote an op-ed in the local paper that I’m quoting below:

“But I have a radical idea for consideration. Just for a change, let’s have the guts, in both political parties, to address the root cause rather than the symptom.

The plain fact is that the reason for the perceived need for affirmative action in college admission policies is very simple.

Some say that minority kids aren’t as smart. Try again. Some say that minority kids don’t have as much money. Try again. Some say that minority kids’ schools don’t have enough money. Try again.

The real reason is very obvious to anyone who is willing to be objective. Far too many minority kids are being left behind because they attend schools that fail them. They are stuck in under-performing schools in their K-12 years, and they have no choice in the matter. Their families don’t have the money to move to better performing school districts or to place them in an alternative school of their choosing.”

The article is not available online, but for anybody interested in looking it up, the title was “Affirmative action brawl in Michigan would be divisive, neglect true reform.”

That would clearly be a step in the right direction, but you’d still have about a dozen departments that are completely controlled by the left. In addition, you’d still have the media, Hollywood, TV, advertising and K-12 aggressively promoting leftist viewpoints.

      • No affirmative action in university admission in Canada (well, maybe some with first nations people). My son took some biochemistry courses at University of British Columbia a few years ago. He said that out of more than 100 kids almost all were Chinese. My son was about the only white kid in the class. This at a university that has a very good reputation and was built and created by white people. A university from which my son’s parents and grandparents graduated.

A lot of the Chinese students have very rich parents and are living in nice houses near the university (in neighbourhoods that were entirely white 30 years ago). Oh..and the people living in the nice houses aren’t paying any income tax to support the university because their income is all made in China, or they have some other scam. The white people who have been driven out of these areas by fantastically high housing costs are paying income tax to support the university that their children mostly don’t go to any more.

Vancouver was my home town. When I was born there in he 1950’s there were only a small handful of Chinese in Vancouver, mostly old men in Chinatown.

Yes, i resent what mass immigration has done to my home town. If the Chinese are so smart why don’t they create their own universities in China that have good standing in the world? Why do they have to ride on the coat tails of what people?

However I’m still glad the immigrants aren’t from Somalia. The point is we didn’t need immigrants of any kind. We were doing just fine before the floodgates were thrown open.

      • You’re never going to destroy liberalism fully but what’s being promoted now is far more dangerous than even that. Kids can’t read, write, think, count, analyze, and cite history but they sure can babble on about “racism, sexism, and homophobia”. School choice and charter schools in particular are a step in the right direction because excluding the non-white factor public schools still promote a lot of stupid ideas/agendas. The private schools by contrast face some market competition infusing reality into the otherwise make believe world of public schooling. As far as media goes people are cutting cords and switching to new media in droves. Trump must break up the remaining conglomerates with anti-trust legislation, the FCC allowing consumers to buy channels individually, and blocking all mergers.

      • Rosenmops: The parochial, yet seemingly more cosmopolitan, Québec government has inadvertently discourage the wealthy Chinese from settling in the French Speaking province, because of its high taxes and low paying jobs, let alone its language barrier. Many White Anglo Canadians who are now disenfranchised from these Asian immigrants should think again, before accusing the Québécois for being reactionary and separatists.

  2. This article makes the DeVos’ seem a lot more interesting. http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2014/01/devos-michigan-labor-politics-gop

    >Passing right-to-work in Michigan was more than a policy victory. It was a major score for Republicans who have long sought to weaken the Democratic Party by attacking its sources of funding and organizing muscle. “Michigan big labor literally controls one of the major political parties,” Dick DeVos said last January. “I’m not suggesting they have influence; I’m saying they hold total dominance, command, and control.” So DeVos and his allies hit labor—and the Democratic Party—where it hurt: their bank accounts. By attacking their opponents’ revenue stream, they could help put Michigan into play for the GOP heading into the 2016 presidential race—as it was more than three decades earlier, when the state’s Reagan Democrats were key to winning the White House.

So if the real goal is to crush public teachers unions, then this could end up being a good pick.

    November 28, 2016 at 12:28 PM

    • Teacher’s unions are a local problem and not a federal problem, and non-unionized private schools spend a lot more per student than the public schools. The teachers’ unions provide a convenient whipping boy, but it attacking them accomplishes nothing but alienating white teachers who might become Republican voters.

But they won’t, because cops and firefighters are a sex/race combination that conservatives love and they tend to vote GOP. And tribalism is fine, but in that case you need to drop the pretence of a principled stance.

Public education is a good thing. Conservatives deny it because they’ve lost public education so badly that they’d rather pull the entire edifice down rather than sack up and fight. So they lionize charters, home schooling etc., to hide the fact that they’ve lost public ed.

They love living in the sticks – honestly! just ask them! – because they’ve lost the cities to NAMs and SWPLs and can’t get it back.

The problem is that people like things like high wages, good schools they can just throw their kids into, city living etc., and Americans in America have every right to those things. When conservatives gush about charters, what ordinary people hear is that conservatism means tearing everything good down.

We’re pretending that – let’s just take some random examples – poor African Americans, Muslims, creationists, Mestizos, Satmars etc., all value education equally, and won’t use public schools to indoctrinate? NO ONE will misuse it. NO ONE will ever resent being forced to pay for one group’s educational preferences while that group refuses to accept any supervision.

We know all this because there is NO NEED whatsoever for truancy services or the like. The Turkish opposition have NEVER used American taxpayer money to fund their agenda. 5. Lion, you really need to get out of Manhattan once in a while. In many parts of the country private schools do not spend more than public schools. The suburban public schools spend between $20k to $25k per student. The city school district spends about $20k. Tuition at the elite private school is $24k. Tuition at the Catholic high schools are about $12k and the Catholic grades schools run about $6k (including parish support).

Breaking the teachers union will decrease funds available to the Democrat party. That is the goal. Trump needs to be careful not to aggravate unions though. Many of his crossover white voters were union members.

Overall though, Lion’s point is correct. Private schools are better than public schools because of the students and the parents, not the spending or the teachers.

As Lion points out, there is a PC phobia about labeling someone less smart. There is no problem with labeling someone less athletic, and no one ever blinks if only the elite athletes get to play on school teams, but somehow it’s not ok with intelligence.

If we look at the bad schools (high % of NAMs), can we triage them by how many students that disturb the classroom there are? Maybe it’s the case that even in a predominantly NAM school, only 10-20% of students screw it all up for everyone (Pareto principle would say 20% of students cause 80% of problems). Those should be placed in a separate school where they’re taught a useful trade skill, or maybe paid to play WoW.

I worked under a sub-contract for the Dept. of Education from 2011-2014. I had a very good view of the whole operation.

The system that’s used to create and disburse loans is an unbelievably archaic, convoluted, and counter-intuitive mess that’s stitched together and maintained by a group of programmers. These programmers work for the same center that takes calls from students, parents, and financial aid advisors who are having trouble using the system.

By time I’d spend about 30 seconds in this system, I was on the verge of laughter…it’s just so incredibly shitty. It’s like a really complicated geocities site from about 20 years ago.

A few weeks later, I realized that this call center…which is one of several scattered around the country that all do the same thing, overall we’re talking about thousands of employees…viewed the unnecessary complexity of their system as a sort of jobs program. The harder the system is to navigate, the more calls they get. The more calls they get, the more entry-level phone-answering employees they can hire. The more employees on board, the more management positions and the bigger the bonuses.

Trust me when I say that a company like FB or Google could send a few programmers over for a couple of months and replace the system in question with something clean, simple, and intuitive. In the process, they would dramatically reduce the need for the enormous tech support industry that has built up around the Direct Loan program.

Interestingly, it seemed at times that the complexity of the entire Direct Loan program was merely a reflection of this shitty, convoluted system. Like, this is the law because that’s how our computer works.

  16. That some private schools cost 3 times as much says nothing about public education costs being reasonable. Per pupil public education spending is much higher in the US than nearly every other developed country. Education spending should probably be cut by a third and end up with better results to boot.

I’m sure liberals hate white evangelicals. But I don’t think that’s the primary reason they support public education. They support public education because they love government. They also love government unions. Teachers’ unions push all kinds of radical leftwing crap. So anything that undermines teachers’ unions is a good thing.

What vouchers would do is increase competition. Competition improves performance whether people want to admit it or not. Schools that can’t hack it would be forced to improve or go under. As it is, underperforming schools are actually rewarded with more money. Vouchers would also allow schools to stratify by ability which you support.

People get upset by streaming because they think grouping children by ability gives them a lesser education. Or that schools with lower test scores aren’t as good as those with higher ones. That’s the wrong way to look at it. The right way to look at it is that you don’t do a student any favors by putting them in a class where the average IQ is 20 points higher. Students are better off being in classes suited to their abilities. Enrolling in a school or class where one will be the dumbest person in the room is a mistake. The best class for a student is one in which they’ll be at about the 75th percentile. Smart enough that they can keep up and master the material. But challenging enough that they have to study.

DeVos was picked to push vouchers and return control from the federal government back to the states. I’m 100% behind that.

    ***
There are evangelical cuckservatives. But most evangelicals are not cuckservatives and most cuckservatives are not evangelicals. Cuckservatives would include RINO politicians like John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush, etc; as well as pundits like George Will, SE Cupp and Margaret Hoover. They’re the kind of sellouts who try to curry favor with liberals by denouncing real conservatives. Now there are some cuckservative evangelicals like Erick Erickson. But if you’ll notice, none of the other people I mentioned were evangelical or particularly religious.

Remember, they’re a subset of homosexuals and its not like these particular people aren’t the most powerful people in the country. Hollywood producers have gotten away with kiddy fiddling for years and everyone knows about it. Same with Saville in BBC. They’re too powerful. But I suggest you watch the video summarising everything that’s been found – the weird code language, Comet Pizza changing its logo in relation to the rumours, the MSM overreaction, the legal owner bizarrely being one of the lead prosecutors in the country on child trafficking, and the bizarreness of having fundraisers in a pizza shop. The smoking gun is the actual art hung on the walls inside the establishment…its a paedo den. The other thing is the manager has a lot of weird child erotica images on his instagram and his brother is a top 50 most powerful in Washington according to local papers….the guy is in the pizza business! Its very very fishy. The paintings in the store were done by a former victim of satanic paedophilia. Check out her art. It depicts the rituals. Its shocking.

      • How is it libelous when breast milk and sperm milk are necessary ingredients during spirit cooking? Have you heard of the pedophile satanist Jimmy Saville? That guy was an entertainer for decades despite looking like a creepy weirdo but low and behold he was a member of VIP pedophile ring and satanic cult with links to the UK monarchy.

More closer to home billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein was investigated in 2005 by local police in Florida who did a complete investigation before making an arrest in 2006. The case was solid but when the local prosecutors began to back down due to pressure from Epstein’s high priced lawyers and VIP friends the case was handed over to the FBI and US Department of Justice which had the resources/power to fight back. Epstein was facing 20 years in prison but plead guilty in 2008 instead getting a much lighter sentence. He did have to register as a sex offender, spend one year in jail, pay millions in restitution to his victims, and perhaps most importantly turn over his VIP friend list which is how Bill Clinton’s name came up.

Now another Clinton ally John Podesta is linked to pedophilia. Coincidence? I don’t think so.

All my info suggests that Trump was recruited by a faction of the US elites to fight these people and rescue the country from its overall sorry state. These Wikileaks dumps are coming from people in our own security/military apparatus which given the NSA’s electronic espionage reach is far more likely than Russian hacking.

  19. Public schools cause an obvious structural problem: the employees at the school live off tax money, so they will teach the students to support more taxation, and the pro-government party, the Democrats. Thus it makes sense for opponents of the Democrats to weaken the public schools. I recognize that alt-right types like Lion actually like the Democrats’ high tax policies, but the teachers don’t just push for the Democrats’ tax policies, but the whole Democrat package, including their diversity and environmentalist religion.

      • The unions donate plenty of money to the Democrats, and the teachers donate votes by indoctrinating the students. Shifting money from the unions and shifting kids to schools which might be less leftist would weaken the Democratic Party.

Think of how important Rush Limbaugh and FOX News were in weakening the hold of the old left wing establishment broadcast media. The left controls the schools now; alternative schools that teach less diversity and enviro propaganda could help break that hold.

True, but since they have no marketable skill or qualified training, they make a lot more than they could doing anything else. School administrators everywhere all make over six figures.

  22. You have to look at charter schools and vouchers as programs that can achieve something different than just changes in test scores. Some charter schools, like those in the KIPP network, are really good at providing discipline and structure to NAMs. It’s similar to how in longitudinal studies Head Start has been found to have certain benefits (lower arrest rates and fewer teen pregnancies) even though alumni don’t score any higher on tests than their peers. The benefits might not show up on state tests, but there are social benefits. Charters are also really important for SWPLs because they can send their elementary school aged children to community schools instead of majority-minority public schools for a few years and put off moving to the suburbs.

  24. Opportunities for meaningful policy reform in the realm of higher education look like they won’t happen under deVos. Bernie was right that the federal student loan programs are scams that benefit the education-industrial complex — not students.

Students and their families are too gullible and optimistic to be realistic about the claims schools make — “take out a modest $10,000 loan, painless payback as our acclaimed university program will boost your earnings by [insert impressive number here].”

Except that $10k * 4 years plus interest is close to $50,000. And that sociology or communications or performance art B.A. means that Starbucks will pay you just as much as any other barista.

Educators and administrators: what’s not to like?
Banksters with their guaranteed portfolios: what’s not to like?

However, Bernie was wrong about the solution to the problem that he highlighted. Instead:

    1. Make student loans the same as every other debt — dischargable in bankruptcy. The risk of a bad loan belongs with the lender, not stuck on the borrower thanks to well-paid lobbyists’ efforts.

    2. Give the universities some skin in the game. Loan goes bad thanks to the unfulfilled extravagant pitches about the C+ student becoming the next Wall St. titan. The bank and the guarantee program can eat half. The other half can come from the college. If, on reflection, they decide to protect their endowment by tightening their standards, so much the better.

      • Automation and technology will render most jobs obsolete in the near future, and the type of work laid out for the majority of college grads isn’t necessary for the upkeep of society (this is where the Yakov types come in). Just more value transference in nature, and we already have a glut of people qualified for this sort of work, where employers do not need more of them. The future of American higher education as we know it, is set to implode with dire consequences, if Americans are unwilling to evolve.

  26. The history of school vouchers goes back to desegregation and school busing. When the courts ordered school districts to desegregate all schools, the white community, especially in the South, responded by setting up private segregated religious schools. The idea of school vouchers was to help pay for the white parents who wanted to send their kids to those segregated schools.

In the 1970s (while Nixon was president) the IRS forced these private religious schools to nominally desegregate or lose their tax exempt status. But the drive towards school vouchers and private schools continued.

“Liberals see public education as a valuable tool in the fight against the spread of prole sects of Christianity.”

No, I doubt there are many liberals that look at it that way. Liberals see this as a way of diverting public tax money to fund private religious education. What would happen if Saudi Arabia began funding inner city voucher schools to teach Wahhabist Islam? Do you want your tax dollars going to that?

If you don’t want that, then is the government going to be in the business of deciding which religions are allowed to operate tax payer funded schools? Doesn’t the first amendment forbid that?

“The simplest thing we could do to vastly improve the quality of public education is to separate the intelligent children from the less intelligent children. But liberals are adamantly opposed to this because they say it’s racist. And it’s not something that the cuckservatives are behind either, because the cuckservative’s greatest fear is being called a “racist.” And it doesn’t do anything to support their ideas about “free enterprise” and it doesn’t make Christian schools more powerful.”

You remember G W Bush’s no child left behind law? This conservative idea that attracted some Democratic support turned public education on its head. Schools were no longer judged by how well the best and brightest kids did on standardized tests. They were judged by how well the worst student did. Forget about honors programs. Divert all educational resources to the worst students.

It was dumb, dumb idea that has only made public schools worse. Most people recognize that now. Many people wonder if that was not the purpose of the program in the first place, to further weaken public schools to increase the support for tax payer funded private schools.

  27. You can’t expect Trump to start talking about HBD at this point, if ever. He has not even been inaugurated yet. Trump derangement syndrome would get much worse if he started talking about HBD. Maybe after he has been president for awhile he can gently and carefully bring in policies that make sense in light of HBD without actually taking about it.

I would say the USA is unique in that they keep track of student success by race. Most other countries just pretend not to notice that race has anything to do with student success.

  29. The simplest thing we could do to vastly improve the quality of public education is to separate the intelligent children from the less intelligent children.

In the late ’70s when I entered the 7th grade, my public middle school in a suburb outside of Boston implemented IQ test-based tracking & placement. Each grade was split into five levels, Prior to tracking, any class was a random and broad mix of students and smarts – a classroom would have a couple of kids that were two or three years older than normal for that grade due to being held back a couple of times, kids that could barely read, and others with serious behavioral control problems.

Once tracking was implemented, except at recess, I never again saw any of the other students that were assigned to the lower levels and we quickly drifted apart – and that was probably a good thing. It worked sort of like today’s honors and AP programs – essentially a private school w/i a larger public school. Nearly all of the lower-level kids ended up Vocational High School and learned a trade – some fell out of the lower-middle class; those that could get into a trades union did well; and others became firefighters and did very well.

Vouchers make classy Private Schools into Ghetto Gang Hangouts. Any quality in Private Schools is the fact that most blacks won’t pay for education, and Mexicans couldn’t care less either. 31. You’re all foolish if you think that government schools can teach anything but government dependence. The concept is baked into that cake. You can try to swing it back to the right with patriotism but it will always have a liberal bent to it. The only solution at this point in history is to offset the public system with vouchers for private schools. You need to erode the power of the public system which has just become an arm of the left-wing movement. It goes all the way to the top law schools which means the practicing lawyers are all true believers in the Social Justice mindset. The meaning of the word justice has been nearly completely usurped and we have one chance with Trump to get it back and it won’t be easy, but, it’s a place to start.
There are some good results with Charter schools and when they get results with actually forcing kids to learn, the public schools will have to pull up their socks and knock out the nonsense.

As far as separating smarter kids from less intelligent kids, all the smarter kids get is more potent Kool-Aid. I went through it in grade school and they wanted to put my son in an enrichment program much the same. I looked at the program and it was all the same B.S. programming that I got only more refined. We decided not to bother.
