Decline of the Catskills and Jewish stand-up comedy

I admit that Jews appear to be a declining force in stand-up comedy, not as dominant as they were forty years ago.

I think this coincides with a decline in the Catskills as a vacation spot for Jews. That Catskills were where Jews went to vacation back in the days when air travel was expensive and Jews were less wealthy (and more prole), and also when Jews were not welcome at gentile white resorts.

The major night-time entertainment in the Catskills was stand-up comedy. Thus did the Catskills provide a training ground for Jewish comedians (where no doubt they started out doing weeknight shows at lesser hotels, with the cream of the crop rising up to doing weekend shows at the big hotels like the Concord and Grossingers, and then out into the gentile world of movies and television), and that training ground no longer exists. And probably, smart young Jewish men today are too busy going to Ivy League schools to become stand-up comics.

Jewish stand-up comedy is likely a victim of assimilation.

When it comes to Jewish stand up comedy the victims are in the audience. Jews just aren’t that funny.

  5. Bob Hope invented pure stand-up comedy. There was no stand-up comedy in Tsarist Russia. Jewish stand-up comedy was a product of assimilation, albeit with a ruder mouth.

Now Jews, especially young Jews travel to Israel instead of the Borscht Belt.

  6. I agree, it seems that all of the top comedians these days are gentiles (Louis C.K., Bill Burr, Chris Rock, Jim Gaffigan, Norm MacDonald, Dave Chappelle, etc.), whereas in the 1960s nearly all of them were Jewish.

I recently watched a couple of Jewish comedians on Netflix (the Sklar brothers) and found their shtick to be tiresome and not the least bit funny. Then I read some of Lenny Bruce’s jokes and they were spectacularly unfunny. I also saw Roseanne Barr perform once and her jokes were so stale and cliche I felt embarrassed for her. Even Pauly Shore (another Jew) was funnier than her.

Are there any Jewish comedians who are actually funny?

      • Can I hold up Gary Gulman as the exemplar Jewish comedian to the group for examination?

He does observational comedy like a modern Seinfeld, mining humor from commonplace things that no one else ever noticed. He has 10 minutes about the inconsistencies in Karate Kid in his special “No Can Defend” and probably 20 minutes of material about cookies.

But he is handsome, good dresser, 6’7″ and played defensive end at Boston College. There is no reason for him to be be the typical neurotic, insecure north american jew, but he is. But he is- brought upon by his upbringing by his jewish mother. Therefor the reason there are/were so many funny jews is because of their home life.

  8. I don’t watch SNL much any more, but last time I did I couldn’t count a single identifiably Jewish name among the writers, and ditto for the cast.

As for the Catskills, still Jewish, but much more “frum”. Heading back to our home in upstate NY from NJ during the summer, we took a detour through the Borscht Belt to see the sites of some of my childhood summers at the bungalow colonies there. On a Saturday PM we saw hundreds of Orthodox types and their legions of kids all walking along Route 55 home from Shabbos services. God bless them, for they’ll be the only ones left, as secular types like us (both me and my wife) with our one child (and in our case, because our son is low-functioning autistic) die out, as Lion has already pointed out.

        http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115147/fullcredits

The new role for the Jewish comic is writer or performer. “Last Comic Standing” famously got given the dictum that they didnt just want a bunch of white guys who were actually fun.

Likewise Judd Aptow made Bridesmaids as penance for being mean to his wife Amy Mann in “Knocked Up”. The Big Issue at the time was “woman arent funny” so Aptow and his mafia proved otherwise by writing a movie for them.

Same thing with Trevor Noah. His stand up clips n line basically would have him struggling to middle. But the Daily Show has 20 writers on it so he can be funny on tv.

Though the Three Stooges (all philly boys, not catskill types) and the Marx Brothers deserve their props.

Modern Jews are hilariously un-funny. What’s hilarious about it is jews get shoved in our faces because of jewish control over hollywood. Amy Schumer and Sarah Silverman deserve shows? Are we being serious here?

Personally, my tastes run towards the black comedies, and it seems like asians and euros do that best. “Devils at the Doorstep”, “Dr. Strangelove” (jew directed, obviously), and Kitano’s “Hanabi” are the height of comedy.

Rock music used to radiate from the cellar doors of Manhattan’s sidewalk — and this was only 25 years ago. Wonder Bread gentiles from all over the country came to NYC and played music where they interacted with the Italian and Jewish ethnics who were doing the same, not pursue a boring BIGLAW or Wall St gig. Today all you find are these White gentile transplants from remote places like Idaho living in the East Village because they came to NYC for a lucrative-value transference career.

      • Y2K was perhaps the year that marked the beginning of America’s cultural downfall and the stark- income divide/inequality that one calls the “liberal centers” and the rest of America. Not only were Whites losing their creative and self-enterprising edge, they lost opportunities which were given to racial minorities in this new world of social equality associated with money — which stymies all creativity and its cultural output.

When Lion talks about self-actualization — 25 years ago it meant a person was developing their intrinsic qualities and how it defines their life. Today self actualization is only about pursuing money in relation to one’s inherent qualities.

For example, I was put on hold on the telephone and imagined Rita Rudner saying – “My daughter asked “Mommy, when will you be finished with your phone call? I said “Oh,…when you get your PhD.” I’m a big fan of the show “Everybody hates Chris” where Chris Rock often portrays his father Julius as obsessed with money and how much things cost. I suddenly pictured him saying “My father knew the value of everything. He walked around with a permanent adding machine in his head. If calculus had been discovered when my father was alive, they would have called it “Julius” instead of “calculus.”

  21. Jewish humor has traditionally fed off a resentment at not only the social order — from which Jews were historically excluded — but the order of the universe itself. An almost metaphyiscal sense of injustice and absurdity defined Jewish humor, and came to inform American humor more generally.

Jews aren’t — as a culture — outsiders anymore, not secular Jews, anyway. They become partners in top law firms, executives in corporations, senior political operatives, and establishment journalists. In other words, they become insiders, or if not, they at least recognize that being Jewish isn’t the reason they remain outside. Successful insiders don’t divert much emotional energy into resenting and satirizing the “order of things.” Sure, they may make the occasional lame comment about the rubes in flyover country, but such comments are more about status signalling and self-congratulation than cutting satire, as is demonstrated by the fact that these comments are rarely original, insightful, or even funny.

Progressive Jews have contributed to an atmosphere in which making fun of the reigning social norms is frowned upon, thus choking off the intellectual and emotional oxygen which once fueled Jewish humor. A pity for our culture, since morally-castigating humorlessness seems to define the current cultural scene.

  23. The reason is the drop in intelligence because of massive mating with (even intelligent) goyim.

I thing the verbal IQ of jewish who was 120 in average, so that 1 in 5 was above 132 mensa gifted, 1 in 30 at 150, and 1 in 250 was above 164 (the maximum IQ measured by tested tests), at Einstein level.

Now, i have a stong feeling that IQ had dropped considerably due to massiving mating with non jews. It would be interesting to have data for jewish average SAT, GRE, LSAT and GMAT and to know what is the average LSAT of jewish at Harvard for example. Jewish represents half of white people at Harvard but most of them are legacy admit. (we know that indian and east-asian have higher average thant white, and reported SAT of non white are quite high, given that the non jewish white has 10 times less chances of being admitted thant the jewish on average).

The concentration of jewish during two centuries between Lithuania and Ukraine was a chance for them to multiply without losing the acquired intelligence during harder times, and the flown to USA in the 19th a chance to find an opened society greedy of intelligence without prejudice, but their acceptance, dominance, and integration, is the hardest fall in genetics terms.

You see a drop in jewish people among the math olympiad teams. They were 80% of the group and now is more 30% . They re still high, but falling quickly. Harvard Law Review president (not issue President like was Obama) is still 90% jewish in the last 20 years but it is only one position per year, on one third of the students are jewish, and more that half of NY Law firm partners, so there is a strong social pression for it independentrly of who is the most gifted student).

In Québec, Canada, French employers do not hire candidates with Anglo Credentials, only those from French speaking colleges/universities.

Quebec has had a state sponsored affirmative action campaign for francophones for several decades now. That’s why they discriminate against anglophones. Before the campaign, everything in Quebec outside of the Catholic Church was built and run by English Canadians. Montreal was an English run city. That’s why the most prestigious university is McGill University. The French Canadians were mostly backward and rural.

      • I didn’t say Harvard was not prestigious. I really meant that in French speaking domains, credentials from Anglophone schools are perceived as non-sequitur or worse, with contempt. Non-French, Continental Europeans don’t really care for them either.

The entire American educational system up to the Ivy League doesn’t offer anything superior over the Old Continent, with the exception of STEM. But most elite minded individuals do not study STEM to begin with. Nearly all of our politicos and CEOs from top notch schools weren’t STEM majors.

Montréal did have a large burgeoning Anglo community in the 19th century, but riots broke out among them, leading to the burning of important civic centers and institutions where many Anglos left, where they relocated to Toronto.

      • Here are arguments being made that French Écoles are a lot more elitist than any of our Ivy Leagues:

Aside from STEM, American universities do not offer anything that is clearly superior over their European counterparts. The liberal arts programs taught at our American schools are a joke.

      • Who says McGill is the most prestigious university in Canada?

Well, according to this blog, which has the same theme as the LoftB, McGill is hardly a world class institution. It only manages to attract 500 more students than l’Université de Montréal. Other myths are dispel, such as the Anglophone community
being responsible for Québec’s success. They hardly contribute anything productive in the province.

      • Are French separatists the good guys or the bad guys?

But people who don’t speak English even though they live in a majority-English country, next door to the United States the world’s most dominant English-speaking country, are probably less intelligent than average.

The upper-class Mexicans all speak perfectly fluent English. Spanish-only is for the poors.

      • I say they’re good guys because they want to have their own province, free from Anglo interference. Québec was founded by the French and so it should be French. Furthermore, many Anglos in the province relocated to Toronto/Ontario during the 19th century after a fire stemming from a riot that destroyed a part of Montréal. Since then, they were always a minority in the French speaking province. It’s a myth that the Anglos were behind the success of Montréal. McGill and all the English-Speaking universities are a tiny fraction, less than 10%, and they are partially subsidized by the French speaking majority.

I’ll be very honest, Montréal is a great city, pretty at that, but it does not have the dynamism, the immense convenience and the energy that one finds in Manhattan. You could find Jewish baked goods, Italian baked goods and Middle Eastern baklava under one roof at the many markets within a mile radius, prole and non-prole in Manhattan. In Montréal, you would have to visit each respective ethnic neighborhood-bakery/market just to buy them. Bookstores and other SWPL type businesses close at 8pm, and that’s being late or generous. In Manhattan, Barnes & Noble, the Strand Bookstore, Whole Foods and a few bakeries are almost open till midnight, 7-days a week.

      • That’s correct. Canada is very cold in the wintertime.

America was a great country or had potential to becoming one, given its agreeable climate and abundance of resources. But schmucks decided turn it into a cesspool and the damage was done. America has the best climate of all the Northern- Hemisphere Western Nations.

      • Whether a university or institution is “elitist” is a different thing from prestige or quality. The answers in the Quora page you linked to say that the Grandes Écoles are valuable in France but that schools like Harvard are more prestigious internationally. Most Europeans speak English as their second language and regard American and British universities more highly than French ones.

McGill U and U of Toronto are generally regarded as the most prestigious universities in Canada.

Montreal is more francophone than it used to be. It used to be English dominated and run, and most of the industry, commerce, institutions, and culture life was developed and run by English Canadians.

      • The English Speaking world is evil. It destroys its own identity for the sake of money. Sort of like the person who would throw another person under the bus for a shiny penny.

Rosenmops laments the fact that British Columbia, Canada has been invaded from immigrants from East Asia, and now it has become an extension of it. Anglophone Canada and the rest of the Anglo world are more concerned with money/profits over national/racial identity.

If the Anglos are allowed to get their way with Québec, it will be another Ontario, a mini-USA with all the failings of multiculturalism and feminism.

    • The gentiles who breed with Jews tend to be smarter than average, I’d bet. Probably as time goes on Jews intermarry into the elite areas of society that focus more on connections than brains, so they tend not to work as hard academically. Dunno if IQ went down or not.

  24. And the link between your post and my comment is obvious : the fading obligation to mate among one kind for every ashkenazi jew, made the borscht belt fade away. The assimilation trap is impossible to resist. If your an intelligent jewish girl like Nathalie Portman, you want to choose among 100% of the interesting guys, not 5%. And if you’re a succesfull jewish guy, it’s hard to avoid the appeal of a ultra pretty girl from Midwest with scandinavian ancestors or the one of a russian model from Siberia …. There is hardly any way backward.

  25. Did these comedians only perform in the Catskills and never in NYC, were most of their audience presumably lived?
Did people vacation there to avoid the smog and soot of New York? I believe a lot of vacationing in the industrial era seems to have been based on taking a short break from air pollution. Upper class districts and suburbs are often situated at higher altitudes.
Is there actually a decline in the number of jewish comedians?

Comedy is undergoing many changes. We no longer have that many shared common cultural references and mores. I agree with Dave. Jewish comedians did much better in the assimilationist and bourgeois post-WWII era.

  27. I go to the Hollywood Improv seven or eight times a year, and there’s always at least one funny Jew each night. Of course, these are youngish comedians who were raised secular in places like LA and Portland, so most of their humor isn’t based in a Jewish experience, like Woody Allen’s was. They just say things like “I’m Jewish, so I guess that means I can get away with a few gay and black jokes.”

  28. Those Jewish resorts in the Catskills were responsible for a lot of Jewish marriages. I know a couple who met there and got married later on – a second marriage for both of them. And the marriage produced a child. 30 years later they’re still together. I think she’s in her early 70’s and he’s about 90.

I’m a big fan of ethnic enclaves, resorts, – ethnic whatever. A group has to have it’s own institutions if it wants to survive.
