Tom Cotton supports immigration restriction

Republican Senator Tom Cotton from Arkansas writes an op-ed in the New York Times supporting immigration restriction.

We have an immigration policy today that few Americans support or voted for. It’s allowed legal and illegal immigration at levels divorced from what our economy needs. That has undermined the earning power of those Americans least able to afford it.

But in this election, Americans finally demanded an end to this unthinking immigration system. President-elect Trump and Congress should take that mandate and act on it promptly in the new year.

This op-ed is good news, and means that there may be support in Congress for Trump’s immigration policy, and that even includes reducing legal immigration.

  1. Nice to see a young successor to Jeff Sessions.

  2. Vdare was talking about Cotton replacing Sessions as “America’s Senator”. Sounds like Cotton has decided to take up the cause.

By the end of Trump’s first term, being anti immigration will be part of Republican orthodoxy just as much as being pro-life is now.

    • I like Tom Cotton a lot. He is both very conservative and very smart. However, a political liability for him is that he seems to be a closet case, not that there’s anything wrong with that.

  3. Now we just have to find out whether Trump supports Trump’s immigration policy. I guess Ivanka will tell him.

    • Let’s hope not. Ivanka is a centrist-liberal as far as I can tell.

      • Ivanka is a very, very bad person. The love people on the right have for her never has made any sense.

Ignore the concern trolls, we know Trump shares our goal of destroying the immigrant community. How do we know? Because you don’t appoint Sessions, Kobach, Bannon and Miller to your team unless you are serious about seeing through the destruction of the immigrant community.

99.9% of women are like this. Even successful women think they’re horribly oppressed.

      • Maybe her “muh women” rhetoric is a cynical ploy to soften the allegations against her father and win over women voters? Trump did win white women voters, by the way. Feminists were throwing a fit about that after the election.

    • Comments here on this blog generally reflect an older crowd.

It appears that many White 20/30 somethings want to leave America, about 50% with 1 in 6 wanting to live in the Great White North and I assume the rest want to live in Europe. I’m willing to bet it’s a race issue and good paying jobs being less of a priority.

  4. With automation, AI, robotics, etc set to wipe out millions of working class jobs, industry has realized that automation is becoming cheaper than low-skill workers. Therefore, a lot of the push for 3rd world immigration will be drying up. Which means 80 million 3rd world immigrants over the last 40 years will become a complete liability with no redeeming value whatsoever. Of course, with greater dependence on technology there will still be a big push for H1B’s. That’s what we have to watch out for.

    • “With automation, AI, robotics, etc set to wipe out millions of working class jobs, industry has realized that automation is becoming cheaper than low-skill workers.”

As somebody who programs for a living, I just don’t see this automation crisis occurring anytime soon and perhaps not ever. And even if it did, Mexican slave labor will always be cheaper than machines.

2nd of all, business will always want mass immigration simply because more immigrants means more consumers.

3rd, belief in mass immigration is more of a religious value than something that is motivated by economics. A lot of business elites are simply cucks to whom the idea that mass immigration is a good thing is simply axiomatic.

  6. I have an article on Syrian policy – #AlwaysAssad:

    Syria Policy – #NeverAssad? #AlwaysAssad!

    https://pragmaticallydistributed.wordpress.com/2016/12/28/syria-policy-neverassad-alwaysassad/

As #NeverTrump did during the election, their opposition to Assad is justified while either avoiding what the alternative to their #NeverCandidate is guaranteed to be, or deluding themselves in the hope there is a viable third candidate to save everyone from two undesirable options.

Few things in foreign affairs are as certain as the fact there is no Democratic 3rd option in Syria.

The time for #NeverAssad to have their say was in the primaries between Assad, ISIS and other equally loathsome terrorist groups, and those ever elusive Islamic “moderates”.

Primary season is over; the general election is now, and those Westernized moderates – as always happens in Muslim “democracies” – were beheaded on the floor of the party conventions by amphetamine-addled delegates, their wives and children sold into chattel sex slavery, and their Western bank accounts stripped clean of every digital penny. You can believe us when we say no one throws a nomination convention quite like ISIS!

This obscenely Darwinian process has selected for a simple binary choice between two tyrants –

    Bashar Assad
The various Islamic terrorist rebels opposed to Assad, the most powerful of which is ISIS

  8. I did like the editorial, but I had thought Cotton was generic Republican on borders; the more slave labor the better. Either I was wrong on that or he’s seen the light. In any case, he has a host of attributes as a politician that can be enlisted in the cause since he’s now on the right side.
