Obama is smart, deal with it

Another case of commenters disappointing me is the continuing comments disparaging Obama’s intelligence.

1. Obama graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School (HLS). The following was not written by me, but was a blog comment from a long time ago:

If we assume that LSAT 163=IQ 130 and average LSAT at HLS is 173, then the average HLS student has an IQ of 145 or 146, since on the LSAT 10 points is one SD.

Actually I think average LSAT Obama’s year was more like 170 or 171, so IQ = 140 is probably a reasonable estimate.

As an HLS grad, I can confirm that grading is largely blind, however the magna=top 10% rule was only established after Obama graduated. His year as I recall it was more like top 20%, and it varied year to year somewhat before it was changed from a minimum GPA standard to the top 10% rule.

Law Review has a few AA spots, and President of HLR is an elected position, so this means that the mainly white and very smart editors thought highly of him but does not speak directly to his intelligence.

All that said, even assuming the worst, that Obama just barely squeaked by in getting magna and was right at the top 20% and was an above average grade grubber, he still could not have graduated magna without having an IQ well in excess of 140.

HLS students are hardly slackers and the school is about 85% white or asian, so getting to the top 20% of that group is no easy task. I did know one guy who was somewhat less intelligent than the HLS average and got magna, but he studied insane amounts, more than 10 hours a day in addition to attending every class.

If Obama got his good grades this way, it speaks extremely well of his good character and work ethic in particular contrasting it with Bush, Gore, and Kerry with their gentleman’s B- averages, McCain and his bottom 1% grades at the navel academy, Biden with his plagerism, and Palin with her long struggle to find a college and major easy enough to squeak by.

Also, comparing Harvard College and Harvard Law School IQs, only about 1/3 of HC students who apply to HLS are accepted, and many more probably don’t even apply realizing they have no chance. I can’t remember the source, but I read that the average LSAT for HC students is 163, which is tied for the highest in the USA, but still well below HLS’s standards. There is a list floating around there somewhere.

So Obama had well-above-average grades at HLS where the average student has an IQ of 140, and where most of the students are workaholics.

2. HBD supports Obama being extremely intelligent. Some people think that HBD means that all blacks are stupid, but this is absolutely not true, it only talks about the average black. That a few exceptional blacks have IQs of 145 or higher is part of HBD. And Obama is only half black, and his black half is Kenyan and not descended from slaves.

People inherit their genes from their parents, and Obama’s father has a Master’s degree in economics from Harvard, and Obama’s half brother, Mark Ndesandjo, has a degree in math and physics from Brown and a Master’s degree in physics from Stanford. Yes, there’s affirmative action, but students who barely squeak into top schools via affirmative action don’t major in physics which is the most difficult hard science you can major in. In addition to being adept with hard science and math, Mark speaks several languages including Chinese, and he’s also a writer and a musician. He’s one very intelligent and talented guy with the same father as Obama.

3. Obama wrote a highly rated and admired memoir, which requires high intelligence. There’s a conspiracy theory floating around that someone ghostwrote it. Yes, ghostwriters are common when rich and famous people need to write a book. Obama was poor and an unknown nobody with lots of free time when he wrote his memoir.

Obama is extremely intelligent, learn to deal with it. Stop acting like a bunch of neo-Nazi morons.

  1. These are all good points. Though Obama did say on Jay Leno’s show that he struggled with math past the 7th grade and so was useless in helping Malia with her 9th grade math homework. He also though they speak the Austrian language in Austria.

      • Perhaps, but he’s never shown much evidence of being quantitatively gifted, as opposed to verbally where his gifts are quite evident. I’d guess that on his SAT’s he was one of those 720V/500M types.

      • What are the odds that we someone could actually ask for his SATs / LSATs? It would put a lot of this speculation to rest.

“Perhaps, but he’s never shown much evidence of being quantitatively gifted, as opposed to verbally where his gifts are quite evident. I’d guess that on his SAT’s he was one of those 720V/500M types.”

I doubt it. Those kinds of scores are rather rare, due to the correlation across mental abilities (g). I suspect that in a lot of cases these extreme splitters are due to education and not genetics. For example, high V and low M could occur with someone who has very limited math education. High M and low V could occur with a non-native English speaker.

      • a. where did this come from? Has anyone discussed this issue since 2012?

        b. I think he is ~120’s. His parents were both academics as is his half sister. I think his ‘credentials’ were helped greatly by being groomed and fast tracked to be a new bred of black leader who wasnt an obvious flim flam preacher. It is kind of amazing how he got fast tracked along and out of Occidental.

        c. I continue to believe in his basic innumeracy. He has made basic order of magnitude mistakes, he wasnt sure what a Shareholder real was. His net worth was negative into his 40’s. Recently there was an article about Obama attending the 2004 Democratic convention and how he had the “bad luck” to have his credit card declined at the car rental.

        d. He doent really have any hard accomplishments we can judge success against. We know he had a handing in writing two auto-biographies for himself. But he wasnt much of a lawyer, a community organizer, or a legislator. He worked in a boiler room and as a weed dealer but we dont know how well those went. He had a single case where he spoke in court. You can try to point to politics as an area of success but a balanced view would be that he also devastated his party’s elective office holders. With Romney, Trump, Bush and Reagan you can say here are people that did well in a number of fields.

      • There is no humblebragging.

His intelligence and the intelligence of the majority of our politicos do mean a darn thing to anyone who really thinks. Seriously, our governing elites are just as ignorant/petulant as the average prole on the street.

        January 2, 2017 at 1:01 pm

    • “I am sure he’s smart enough to understand pre-calculus math.”

Lion, I’m just a few years older than Obama, and there’s something you may not know about the SAT of our era. I’m not taking any position on your overall argument, but I scored 630 math (implicitly much higher than Obama, given his 1206), and I struggled mightily with Algebra II and Pre-Calc analysis. The reason that 8 would do this, as Steve Sailed has Pointe out, is that the SAT had been loaded up with an inordinate number of triangle problems, such that anyone who memorized the 30-60-90 relationships in 10th grade could really load up the points.

      January 1, 2017 at 4:49 pm

      • I sat my SAT in 1970 and scored 595V and 735M, total 1330. Obama’s total SAT score in 1981 was 1206. Yet Lion would have me believe that Obama has a higher IQ than my paltry mid-130’s.

It seems quite preposterous, given those scores, that Lion is able to ascribe O with a 5 or 10 point IQ advantage over me. I guess I’m just not smart enough to figure out how he did that.

And perhaps I’m not paying close enough attention, but there doesn’t seem to be much widespread denigrating of Obama’s probable IQ of around 125 here. That’s certainly close to a 3SD IQ for his group. So why the need to resort to a straw man?

However, it’s Lion’s blog and since this point seems awful important to him, in the fine tradition of Scott Adams I bow to his superior intellect and offer my fealty. 140 to 145? Heck, why not an even 150?

After all, that would likely recalibrate me to 160+ Whoo hoo!

        January 1, 2017 at 9:46 pm

      • Um no, George W Bush’e SAT score was 1206, Obama’s is unknown.

      • “George W Bush scored 1206, Obama’s SAT score is unknown.”

Whoops, my bad. Excuse me a moment while I wipe the egg off my face;-)

Rather convenient that we have no LSAT, SAT or other useful scores that would be IQ-translatable for Obama. What do you suppose is the Occam’s razor explanation for that?

Lion’s primary “gold-plated proof” of Obama’s 140+ IQ is the fact that he graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law School (HLS)”. But this result is so clearly an anomaly, that (to me) it is of questionable veracity. One wonders about the influence that someone like Laurence Tribe might have had in ensuring that his pet was “taken care of”. As others have pointed out, this was a time when black “geniuses” were much coveted and cosseted, and the Tribe relationship would have been easily exploitable.

“What a muddled essay – but given that he’s Tribe’s guy and black I’ll just take the path of least resistance and give him an A”. This type of thing was not uncommon then (and is rife now). Hey presto – magna cum laude. IQ 140+? Not so much.

Mere speculation of course. Clearly this was a pretty bright guy, and loquacious as all get out. But if you really are as smart as you purport to be then you should have nothing to hide. Shouldn’t you?

      • For the record, I’m in favor of making it a requirement that politicians release there transcripts and test scores, that’s a lot more useful than tax returns.

        Lion of the Blogosphere

        January 2, 2017 at 12:16 pm

      • @gda As far as why he never released transcripts, I remember Chris Matthews & Jon Stewart saying that they felt like getting Obama to release his birth certificate was just a step on a never ending cycle of trying to force him to release information to excuse treating Obama as unqualified, hence Obama was resistant to playing that game where no amount of releasing information would ever be sufficient. In addition, many felt this concern was confirmed by Trump, later the same day as Obama released his birth certificate, talked about Obama’s transcripts like he was going to try to go the same route to pressure Obama to release his transcripts that Trump had gone getting Obama to release his birth certificate.

That isn’t saying much, is it? Are there really people who can’t get through calculus, but are good at general logic?

Most of History’s great Mathematicians had no idea of calculus.

        January 2, 2017 at 4:35 pm

    • SWPL types enjoying saying they’re bad at math. They’re generally smart enough to use some basic logic and learn strategies to do well on standardized test math questions. I think if schools introduced proofs earlier, and not just boring fill-in-the-blank proofs they do in high school geometry but some basic number theory/light abstract algebra, SWPL types would like it a lot more. As it stands math education is too focused on learning by rote and memorization, which appeals to autistic types and not so much to those who favor the humanities.

      January 1, 2017 at 8:40 pm

    • Lion is right. I looked into this years ago. Colleges have average SAT’s that basically equate with IQ. Same with the LSAT, GRE etc. 80% of what makes a good college is the quality of student they accept.

HYP also can only accommodate a portion of applicants due to limited number of seats. A lot of Harvard- level kids go to the next rank of Liberal Arts schools of various degrees of prestige. Christ, the sons of Harvard graduates go to them.

US Presidential candidates have long learned that the smarter they are, the more they need to ‘aw, shucks, I’m just a barefoot country boy from Brooklyn’ to show they care about the average folks/don’t put on airs and get elected.

Obama is a smart Black guy with a suit and a briefcase. That’s a nightmare for some people but there it is.

      January 2, 2017 at 4:28 pm

      • The same can be said for George Bush II BTW. Met the man. Very, very, smart. But as Obama knew zip about economics, Bush knew zip about war. He was a peacetime consigliere.

  2. Law school is known as a refuge for intelligent people who are incapable of mathematics.

    January 1, 2017 at 1:59 pm

    • Shrug. IQ doesn’t matter after the fact. If you had a significant proportion of successful people had low IQ [1] scores it would just discredit of the tests themselves. The real test is life itself. As for Obama, he’s actually said that he’s been helped by AA, so it’s at least a factor.

[1] Of course, no such group exists–probably not even in sports.

        January 1, 2017 at 9:49 pm

        January 2, 2017 at 12:42 pm

  3. Obama figured out that he could beat Hillary by playing the Hope+ Black turnout card. He later figured out that he could win a second term by reassembling the D coalition around resentment of whites. He set Hillary up for his third term by importing as many D voters as possible. He also understands narratives at a very high level; ‘Right Side of History’ is atrocious bunk but, given his media assets, he understood that it was bunk that could work for him. That someone like Trump came along capable of playing narrative judo with him probably frustrates him to no end; as does his certain frustration with his lesser capable student, Hillary. When he says he could have beaten Trump he likely believes it and it might be true.

    January 1, 2017 at 2:38 pm

    • Obama would have crushed Trump. Any D besides Hillary would have crushed Trump.

      Otis the Sweaty

      January 1, 2017 at 3:46 pm

      • Why do you think this?

Trump would have had a tough time with Obama, but Obama is a man and Trump would have foam party’d him like Marco Boobio and then beta’d him like he did old Jeb.

Obama would have gotten the magic black man boost, but Trump could have countered with his Golden Hair Jesus thunder punch.

Obama had everything on his side in 2012 so that’s probably why Trump chose not to run that year. Trump doesn’t fight unwinnable battles, he market times.

It’s unfortunate to say, but we needed the last 30 years to produce Trump. The Bush failures to show that opposing international interventionism isn’t just a hippy maneuver, the refugee disasters to show that opposing immigration isn’t just racism and that Muslims really are 99.99% of terrorists. The failures of 2007/2008 to show that the monetary system is being used as a tool to promote elite interests and the banking collapse to show that we need protectionism/sensible consumer laws and regulations like Glass Steagel. Obama’s 8 years of rabid anti white anti police rhetoric to show that no one was keeping the black man down and that the blacks among us crave anarchy rather than the white man’s oppressive order. Etc etc etc.

If a third term was legal and Obama ran I think Trump would have had a chance at beating him. He would simply have used a different strategy. Eg hammered him on his secrecy and his birth certificate. Also if we had 2000 or 2004 demographics but in a 2016 election Trump could have also won. Basically Trump didn’t lose any Bush voters but the democrats gained population because of the fecund democrat hordes. It’s unfair to say Obama could have beaten Trump without specifying context.

Trump is a better campaigner than Obama if that was the real original question we were asking.

        January 2, 2017 at 9:17 am

      • Bah. Trump defeated Obama because he defeated his anointed successor.

Obama is whistling in the dark. People like him, but also feel he screwed up and have had enough.

        January 2, 2017 at 4:37 pm

  4. Why do people care so much? I still put Obama’s intelligence at around 130, but it doesn’t really make a difference anyhow. Things like policy preferences matter more. Moreover, much of a president’s success is due to the vagaries of pure luck.

From the research at Pumpkin Person’s, the average president only has an IQ of around 130 (, a little bit above the average of Harvard undergrads. Some of our best presidents only had mediocre IQs (Kennedy scored 117 and 119 in high school). As noted in this post, Palin likely has an IQ that’s barely in the triple digits. Rick Perry is pretty dumb, too (only made one A at University of Texas, in some ROTC class.)

As far as the IQs of lawyers (and I think this is why Lion takes this topic personally, because he is a lawyer), I believe they average is around 120. Harvard lawyers likely have much higher IQs, but you have to realize that people who do well on one IQ test (LSAT), regress to the mean on other tests. So the likely IQ of the typical Harvard law graduate is in the low 130s.

    January 1, 2017 at 3:01 pm

    • “Rick Perry is pretty dumb, too (only made one A at University of Texas, in some ROTC class”

I always thought he was pretty dumb and never had that evidence!

However, as a non-lawyer, you seem to underestimate just how hard it is to get into HLS and then to excel there. You just don’t get it. It doesn’t matter that you think law must be easy cause it’s just a lot of bullshitting over stuff, but when you are competing against the very smartest, it’s damn difficult to get top grades.

I am considering law school, so I realize that lawyers are not stupid. The LSAT also felt like a harder test than either the GMAT or GRE (I say this as someone with a 800 SAT verbal, and 168 on the GRE Verbal).

        January 1, 2017 at 3:12 pm

      • I took the Foreign Service oral assessment with a bunch of Harvard kids, and went into it expecting to be impressed by their intelligence. I was surprised to discover that they were roughly on par with the top kids in my Pac-12 school (not Berkeley or UCLA). In addition, they knew less about politics and foreign cultures.

Only one of the people in my group even spoke a foreign language, and that one had grown up a Foreign Service brat herself, so had learned French as a kid in international schools.

        January 1, 2017 at 3:15 pm

        January 2, 2017 at 7:27 pm

  5. I’m a bit skeptical. I went to a top law school and just about everything was quietly rigged to give an advantage to non-white students. From admissions; to financial aid; to on-campus recruiting; to law review spots . . .there was a thumb on the scale every step of the way.

Besides, Obama could have released his board scores, which are much less vulnerable to this sort of finagling.

In my experience, when a person releases some facts but not all facts, usually the undisclosed facts are not flattering to the person.

      • Lion has a blind faith in the veracity of the HLS magna cum laude result. He clearly thinks this is impervious to tweaks. Of course, as a Harvard alumni himself, perhaps that’s understandable.

Me, I look at human nature and I see a bright, loquacious black man connected to the most powerful progressive lecturer at Harvard. And I see a system (rife with other progressive professors) weighted to be ultra-helpful to that bright, loquacious black man.

I consider his magna cum laude at HLS of an ilk with his Nobel Peace Prize.

        January 2, 2017 at 12:21 pm

      • I wish I was a Harvard alumni.

But at the law school I did go to, they took blind grading very seriously, and Harvard is known as the most conservative of all law schools when it comes to changing the way things are done. It’s considered a huge violation of the rules for a professor to try to discern who wrote an exam. So I don’t buy into the conspiracy theory that ALL of Obama’s professors colluded to give one nobody black student magna cum laude.

And I wish I had the confidence that climate “scientists” were unbiased in claiming that the science is “settled”.

Experience and actual empirical results are what I try to base my opinions on. In this case, experience with the nature of progressive educators and the LACK of empirical evidence for an IQ of 140 or above. The fact that Obama had moderately high IQ parents and a similarly endowed half-sibling is basically the only reason I estimated his IQ to be as high as 125.

Many of your commenters seem unmoved by your less than compelling arguments, and offer reasonable arguments of their own.

I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree on this as yet unsubstantiated claim.

        January 2, 2017 at 2:36 pm

      • Counter arguments are based on conspiracy theories. All the professors had Harvard Law School conspired to give one black kid high grades. Then other people conspired to ghostwrite a great memoir for him. All part of some greater uber-conspiracy to make one random black guy into the next POTUS (as if graduating magna cum laude from HLS was ever a requirement for being POTUS). Occam’s Razor is that he’s highly intelligent.

What’s more is that Africans are quite genetically diverse, and there’s no reason to believe there are no differences between different African ethnicities.

The stereotype about the ethnic group the Obamas come from, the Luo, is that they’re smart but lazy. Obama certainly didn’t shatter that stereotype. Obama graduated from Harvard Law, became a lecturer at the University of Chicago, wrote successful books, and ran excellent campaigns in 2008 and 2012 – all evidence of high intelligence. Once in power, he more or less had a Democratic Congress enact Obamacare and then he blamed George W. Bush and the Republicans for everything going wrong. Lazy!

    • I think something important here is being missed.

The educational system is a gatekeeper to many class entry points. Since society has become increasingly anti-white male, the agenda is to repurpose education for elevating women and poc’s by removing white male standards from the equation.

Thus, the entire educational system is structured as a giant tutoring session for women and non-whites. They are accepted to universities on standards usually much lower compared to white men. The entire university is then devoted to make sure they do not fail. If the classroom is not enough, then office hours and TA sessions an are available. If that does not work, the “Women or minorities in…” program will step in to offer massive tutoring. Women have the option of getting help from thirsty men or having a boyfriend who is maybe a quarter ahead in her program. If all else fails, then there is massive grade inflation to raise scores.

The tutoring drilled into the dullards creates a workable patina of education and intelligence to fool the unsuspecting, while the grade inflation gives hiring managers the illusion of a good bet. This is standard operating procedure even in STEM. By the time the incompetence is discovered, promotion into a less dangerous area is usually a solution.

This is a route completely unavailable to most white males unless they. Are from connected families.

Obama supposedly graduated from a prestigious Hawaiian prep school, but did poorly, ending up at Occudental College. His grades then became “good enough” to transfer to Columbia and then in to Harvard Law.

Does anyone really believe that a person with a 140 IQ would suffer such a hiccup or even be able to recover? Do you really believe that a white male patterning Obama’s educational path would end up with Obama’s educational results?

Any minority or woman with results out of line to a white male with similar credentials indicates a suspicious situation. Thus, we a law review editor with nothing published who can’t string sentences together without a TelePrompTer.

These empty suits are everywhere in our society.

        January 2, 2017 at 12:36 am

      • Based on my experience in the Ivy League as student and educator: Agreed entirely with this assessment. Saw some African students in school who literally could not communicate in English (not knocking them for being dumb, but you must be able to speak English to go to school in the US).
Girls are also notorious for not doing their own work. An assignment turned in by a girl was worked on by her, her study group, the TA, the professor, etc. Except in very rare classes where the balance of work is entirely on exams, girls get a huge boost from the collaborative brainpower, whereas boys are far more likely to do it on their own (especially if they are the smart type that isn’t socially adept).

This has no relevance to whether Obama is actually intelligent. He clearly is intelligent. Just not as intelligent as he thinks he is.

        January 2, 2017 at 7:24 am

      • Yes, exactly. There is a big different between saying Obama is not a stupid man and claiming he is highly intelligent. The guy went to frickin’ Oxy. OXY! And this after attending perhaps the most prestigious prep school in his state, and hitching his wagon to the affirmative action train which was designed to benefit African-Americans (the descendants of slaves), not AFRICANS. So, an obvious scam.

Hillary is clearly highly intelligent, and Trump is certainly intelligent. He didn’t sort of accidentally transfer into Wharton, he had to bring something to the table.

So, Obama, clearly an intelligent guy, but not some highly intelligent wiz kid. And that is true of so many presidents. For example, do people like Obama, Clinton, the Bushes, etc, have intellectual interests? Do they speak foreign languages, or enjoy subjects such as physics or Modernist poetry or whatnot? I certainly haven’t heard of this. In his free time, I believe Obama likes to hang out with his family, golf, and watch TV. All very nice, but…..

The highly intelligent, especially the males, are often misfits, a bit out of place. A number of them don’t make it, or, like Steve Jobs or Bob Dylan, they come from the outside and create something new. I knew such people in my prole high school, I was one of them to some extent. One guy is now a math prof at a famous university, another is an unemployed/underemployed phd, another got arrested in college for hacking, then made it in silicon valley. Convicted criminal. “A close relative of mine”, higher IQ than me, also didn’t make it. Just didn’t fit into the system, all but failed to graduate college with SATs above 1400 in the 1980s.

Those who succeed in the conformist professions, law, business, investment banking, etc, are simply intelligent, conformist people. A self-perpetuating system.

Well, a complicated topic. I don’t/we don’t have time to do it justice here.

    • I agree with you. But it is not just laziness, like a lot of smart people Obama probably finds the day to day minutiae of governing pretty boring. He would rather be thinking about big ideas or listening to music. Both Bush and Obama are talented individuals who lack conscientiousness because they were both spoiled and had success handed to them – Bush by wealth and privilege, Obama by being a smart “black” man in a world desperate for smart black men. Despite his other flaws, Trump seems to understand the importance of hard work.

      • A major problem Obama had is that he never managed or directed anyone. I’m not exaggerating. He’s been a writer, a lecturer, and a legislator. (We’ve been hearing jokes about community organizing for a decade now, so I won’t tell another one.) Those jobs require brainpower, which he has plenty of, but they’re not positions where you tell people what to do.

In general, positions where you take on a role of “setting strategy and expectations,” or “providing a vision for the organization” work best if you’ve already managed people for a long time. If you don’t have experience directing people, you won’t have any idea how the game is played. In “Confidence Men,” Larry Summers stated Obama had no idea how to lead people, and compared to Clinton, it felt like the parents were out of the house.

It’s like 20-somethings who want to be consultants. It’s a great gig, but no one will take you seriously if you haven’t already done some serious, nitty-gritty work in the field.

  7. Yes, Obama is highly intelligent. But his problem is that he is a true-believer in silly effeminate PC anti-white dogma and lacks the sort of “common sense and plain dealing” American ingenuity to actually get things done. In other words, he is intelligent but INEFFECTIVE.

  8. Obama’s base intelligence isn’t the main issue. The HBD complaint against Obama is that he seeks to flood the country with sub-Saharan Africans, Mexicans, and Middle Eastern Muslims, and has no concern on whether they enter the country legally or illegally. He is fundamentally anti-Western and anti-white, which isn’t a surprise in view of his upbringing.

I did my MBA at UF for less than $5000 out-of-pocket total tuition, but this was back in the late ’90s. Regrettably, a couple of layoffs and blown opportunities, the “Great Recession, personal risk aversion, and crushing competition and I’m earning exactly what I earned in 1998 before starting the MBA. Nonetheless, thanks to a reasonably low cost of living and a couple of serendipitous real estate purchases, I hit one million $ net worth before age 50.

  11. Psychometrics is obviously not your cup of tea Lion. IQ is standardized for a White European population. A pure black African population has tested out to a meagre 70. Mulattos like Obama usually have a median around 85, which is straight in between pure black and White Man. Assuming a median IQ of 85, a standard deviation would be 15. 130 is THREE standard deviations above the median. This is above genius level if you’re a White Guy who’s 100% European. Obama having such a high IQ would make him one of the smartest in his racial category.
Those education claims are fudged by Affirmative Action Programs, and have no proof behind them. His academic records have apparently been SEALED, like all the other records of this strange unknown guy who nobody seems to know. I’ve heard no one at Harvard remembers this guy. Rather strange for someone who claims to have edited the Harvard Review. Where are the Harvard Reviews that have his name in them? Haven’t seen any of those either. Media loves this guy, but not a single ex-Professor has given any interviews saying they remember him.
Saying not all blacks are stupid is quaint. This is a race that never invented the Wheel or knew how to make fire. They don’t teach any native black African languages. Its not because nobody speaks them, its because they usually only contain about a hundred words. No seriously. A language with only about a hundred words. That’s SERIOUSLY STUPID.

    Joshua Sinistar

even those very low sub-saharan african IQ average scores are suspect anyway, or likely depressed by environmental factors. the average sub-saharan african IQ controlled for environmental effects is probably about 80 and could be between 80-100.

      January 1, 2017 at 9:27 pm

    • You’re the kind of fool Lion is talking about. Obviously there are many intelligent Blacks, and quite a few with IQs in excess of 150. You’re showing your own innumeracy by taking “rare” to mean “impossible”.

      January 2, 2017 at 7:25 am

      • Agreed.

However, for African-Americans, we should note that an IQ of 150 would seem to represent > 5SDs.

        A little statistical math may clarify things. For simplicities sake lets look at IQ 145. That equates to approx. 5SDs for African-Americans (12 x 5 = 60; 60 + 85 = 145).
The African-American population is 13.3% of 323 million, or 43 million.
A 5SD event means that 1 in 1.7 million will have an IQ>145.
        That would.equate to 25 people.

The choice of 12 or 15 for the SD makes a HUGE difference. For example, assuming the latter, that would mean 4SDs and equate to 2,724 African-Americans with an IQ>145

Approximately 0.135% of the population (approx. 323 million) has an IQ>145.

That would equate to 436,000 people.

Now this is just a rough estimate (and I hope someone will check my math). Also, things are not so clearcut in these rarified areas of the bell curve as applied to human intelligence, so there could be anomalies either way.

But it would appear that African-Americans with IQs>150 are exceedingly rare when compared to the general population.

So for clarity perhaps you might qualify that statement by noting that spotting a black face in a crowd of people with IQs over 150 might be tricky. In a crowd of US citizens with IQs=>150 “quite a few” would be a misnomer.

        January 2, 2017 at 1:52 pm

      • So there are still 25 blacks at that level according to your math, it makes sense that one of those 25 would be the one who becomes president. Anyway, Obama has nothing to do with American blacks, he’s half white and half Kenyan.

      • “Obama has nothing to do with American blacks, he’s half white and half Kenyan.”

My post actually was not directed towards Obama specifically, because of course I have no real knowledge of his group’s IQ characteristics (somewhere in the early 90’s I suspect). I was speaking more broadly, and actually trying to make the point that the comparative ratio is compellingly large, and forebodes much peril ahead as jobs for even average IQ workers are increasingly threatened by robotization etc. Not good for any middle class worker, and devastating for even the smarter African-American worker. I don’t envy Trump.

You will note that I was careful to specify African-American in my “analysis”.

        A humble brag might be:

“It was nice to get the Governor General’s Silver medal for being the top BSc student…but of course it is a very small university so it doesn’t mean much. :-/

“I scored 21/120 on the Putnam Math competition. Terrible score of course but, surprisingly, this score ranks 250th out of over 2000 competitors. Not that bad for a fat middle-aged housewife with 4 kids living in a small town, I guess.”

        More examples of humble brags:

        January 1, 2017 at 7:16 pm

      • I was going to say, that isn’t a humble brag. A humble brag in that situation would have been something like “I’ve forgotten so much of my Differential Equations” class that I can’t even help Malia with her 9th grade math.

        January 2, 2017 at 2:47 pm

    • My IQ is somewhere between 117 and 123 and I really struggled with high school math. In fact, I am so bad at math that I needed to meet with a tutor 6 hours a week just to get through Calc III. And keep in mind that the kind of calculus the schools teach today is just Jamie Escalante style “calculus for retards”, not real calculus.

By the way, in all of my Calc classes there were seemingly dumb African kids who still managed to make it through without needing any tutoring.

If you hear Obama talking when he’s not on his teleprompter he’s not just brilliant, he is remarkably perceptive. Unlike almost all other liberals Obama really understands both Republicans and prole whites. His ability to empathize with others and understand what motivates people is very unusual for a liberal, and is another sign of having a very high IQ.

Obama’s genome is 51% white and his mother was a literal genius. While we don’t know exactly how smart his father was, it seems reasonable to believe that daddy Obama had an IQ of at least 120. It is totally reasonable that a genius white woman and a top 1% for black IQ man would have a kid with a ~135 IQ.

Says who? I read the biography of Ann Dunham (A Singular Woman by NY Times reporter Janny Scott). I don’t recall any evidence of her genius in the bio. I do remember it took Dunham two decades to earn her PhD in anthropology from the University of Hawaii.

        January 1, 2017 at 6:22 pm

      • In law school, Obama would be quite obviously a hot house flower. The funny name (esp at the time), the bizarre background, CIA connected up the wazoo (how much did that have to do with getting into Harvard Law?), and a glib jive talker well versed in precisely the kind of Prog-speak that the uniformly ultra-Liberal / activist Harvard Law Prof faculty would drool over. And he’s so well spoken! Are you kidding? EVERYONE there knew Obama, I’m sure, and his way was paved. He wasn’t just another aff ack negro. He was going places. He was the ultimate teacher’s pet. You think some radical Harvard Law prof is going to stand in his way by giving him the crappy grade he deserved? No way. This is not how radicals work. The ends ALWAYS justify the means with Progs.

Really, the most startling thing of all is that he was made head of the Law Review and never published anything. As far as I know the only one before or since who had this “accomplishment.” Yet he still graduated with highest honors? It doesn’t add up.

I really hope that out of sheer spite, Trump has the NSA dig up all of the background on Obama and “leak” it. It’s really pretty amazing that it hasn’t happened yet. How Deep State is this guy anyway?

      • “We don’t really know much about his family background. Obama doesn’t look like a typical mulatto.”

We know that his father was chosen in Kenya for a special program to attend college in the United States. He attended the University of Hawaii and received a BA in economics. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He then attended Harvard and enrolled in a PhD program in economics, but left after receiving a masters degree. He worked as an economist in Kenya, but came into conflict with the Kenyan president, was fired and black listed by the Kenya government, making it impossible for him to work. He was involved in a series of auto accidents and died in an accident in 1982.

His mother, Ann Dunham, met Obama’s father as a freshman at the University of Hawaii. She became pregnant, they married and she dropped out of school for some time. She later returned to University of Hawaii and earned a BA, MA and eventually a PhD (1992) in anthropology. From 1968 to 1995 she lived and worked in Indonesia, initially teaching English and then working for the Indonesian government, banks, universities and the Ford Foundation. She developed a model of microfinance which is the standard in Indonesia while at the Ford Foundation. She returned to the USA in 1995 when she became ill. She was diagnosed with uterine cancer and died late in 1995.

Obviously both his father and mother were will above average in IQ.

        January 1, 2017 at 10:46 pm

  14. Don’t disagree with your assertion, that Obama is intelligent, probably 2SDs above average, but this point:

“………..he still could not have graduated magna without having an IQ well in excess of 140.”

Very few people at Harvard Law, very few people in any institution have an IQ ” well in excess of 140″. Most people out there who boast of an IQ of 140+ are bullshitting. I doubt that they have any clue as to what their measured IQ is. I have no idea what my IQ is. Almost certainly, I was tested at some point, but the results were never reported to me. Based on standardized test scores I can safely infer that my IQ is in the 115-125 range. Same range as George Bush, and that is why I have never given that moron any slack, because I don’t act stupid with my IQ, why should he have been so profoundly stupid with the more or less equivalent IQ.

People with IQs of 140+ are distributed across a vast number of occupations and institutions. Many such institutions, and occupations, are second or third rate. Many such people are just droning on through life. Two of my brothers have documented IQs of 139 and 140+ (and the old SAT scores to match). They went to very good colleges, but didn’t work hard so they ended up in 2nd tier, 3rd tier law schools. They do well, but they are not superstars.

In the study of Law there is not much more to be gained with an IQ in excess of 130-135. Having an IQ of 130-135 is more than sufficient to excel at Harvard law school and at the practice of law.

    January 1, 2017 at 5:13 pm

    • I agree with most of your comment, but I’m wary of any claims that IQ above a certain threshold is unnecessary, because that’s usually untrue (even in fields which require little cognitive ability).

      January 1, 2017 at 9:42 pm

  15. Waiting for the inauguration is agonizing. I’m angrier now then I was during the election.

I expected Trump to win the popular vote but I wasn’t that confident and I had no idea what to expect with the electoral college. It was only after Trump won that I really realized that the destruction of the immigrant community would not be instantaneous and that we would have to put up with 3 more painful months of Obama.

The three month breathing period has allowed the left to get into even deeper denial. They keep insisting that the immigrant community will not be destroyed and that the Republican leadership will take out Trump, either within Trump’s first month, Trump’s first year, Trump’s first 2 years or before 2020, they can’t make up their minds. And of course they are insisting that the wall will not be built.

The left has been wrong about the Republicans for 8 years now and were extremely, ridiculously wrong about this election and yet they still haven’t learned anything. They are actually become even more delusional.

But you can only be delusional for so wrong. When Trump is finally in office, they will be forced to recognize reality. That makes enduring 20 more days of their delusions even more difficult to do.

      • Oh, we’re gonna Build That Wall. The Wall will allow Trump to avoid mass deportations, which would be a PR disaster. While The Wall is being constructed, Trump can simply deport more people than Obama and appear tough on immigration. In fact, after The Wall is complete, I expect some kind of soft amnesty early into Trump’s second term.

However, as Otis the Sweaty recently pointed out, The Wall is about trolling, not border security. I’m not black pilled on Trump just yet and I’m still hopeful that he’ll try to do something about legal immigration, which is the real problem.

How controlled Trump will be is an open question, but so far he’s acting like the unhinged lunatic that we all grew to love during the election cycle. I’m glad that he made Bannon his senior counselor:

“The central thing that binds that all together is a center-right populist movement of really the middle class, the working men and women in the world who are just tired of being dictated to by what we call the party of Davos. A group of kind of — we’re not conspiracy-theory guys, but there’s certainly — and I could see this when I worked at Goldman Sachs — there are people in New York that feel closer to people in London and in Berlin than they do to people in Kansas and in Colorado, and they have more of this elite mentality that they’re going to dictate to everybody how the world’s going to be run.”

He does seem to match the Regional VP’s; he’s got a strategy that makes sense to him and fits the Home Office agenda and if something comes along that doesn’t quite jibe with it, he ignores that. Based on that I would guess he’s a second standard deviation dullard.

  22. Some people assume that Obama is not that intelligent because some of his speeches don’t sound real deep. But Obama, like many modern politicians, dumbs down his speeches to the point where an uneducated person can easily understand it.

As an example, compare any modern politician’s speech to this text (the second half of it is brilliant).

    george costanza

    January 1, 2017 at 9:41 pm

    • His speeches are superficial because that’s all the process requires. Most ‘educated’ people these days are superficial and anyway, Scott Adams is correct, persuasion doesn’t require accuracy but rather must be believable, a lower standard. In the US, the term educated is misused. Fussell talked about this 30 years ago or more and he hit the nail on the head. College used to be for the top 5%, 10% tops. Now we have 30% of the population with a degree something they pass off as proof of educational attainment. The percent between 30-20% aren’t all that smart but the degree makes them imagine they are.

One small correction to my old post, the average Harvard undergrad who takes the LSAT gets a 166, not 163. Harvard comes in first, with a bunch of other schools tied for second at 165.

For people interested in IQ, it is a fascinating test because it is high stakes and about 100,000 smart college seniors and graduates have been taking it for many years. It has the highest ceilings of these tests and there is a lot of data and studies about LSAT scores and race, sex, socioeconomic status etc.

There was an essay published in Politico yesterday by Molly McKew, who’s apparently a Republican neocon, that has the entire DC establishment on Twitter swooning because it calls for restarting the Cold War as a way to build national character (unspoken message: to distract from the mess the Western establishments have made of their countries domestically through mass immigration and outsourcing.)

McKew’s Twitter account is a riot. She can’t retweet enough the praise she’s getting from neocons and Dems for writing the most cogent analysis yet of Russia, but only four days ago she twitted out a tabloid conspiracy theory that Russia orchestrated the murder of their own ambassador in Syria. That’s John Bircher stuff.

  30. Lebanese weight lifter and ornithologist Nassim Nicholas Taleb (author of THE BLACK SWAN) uses the term IYI – Idiot Yet Intellectual — for people like Noam Chomsky, Paul Krugman and Barack Obama, who were blessed with high IQs yet believe and espouse PC bullshit. I can almost forgive the former Harvard Review editor for debasing our beautiful English tongue by always saying “between Michelle and I,” but I can’t forgive his saying, “For more than a thousand years, people have been drawn to Islam’s message of peace. And the very word itself, Islam, comes from salam — peace.” No, numbnut, “Islam” means submission (to Sharia, the Law of Allah.) So here we have one prime example in Barack Obama of a high IQ idiot. He is not alone.

    • He is just espousing what a lot of Western academia has said about Islam for decades. You do not need to be high IQ to understand what Islam is really like, you just have to have first hand experience of it. On the other hand if all your experience on Islam comes from English language books at a Western University then you will have a distorted view no matter what your IQ is. This is the main reason that the anti-Muslim populists get their support from the working class, because those people live around Muslims and get what is actually going on.

  32. Notice that i discoverd thanks to Pumpkin Person that the correlation among scholastic tests and IQ is far from 1, it’s in the 0.6 – 0.7 area. So when someone has a 180 LSAT wich is 1 in 2500 or 3.2 sd, and assuming that people who take SAT have an average IQ of 115 (+1 SD), then you have a result in IQ which is not 1 in 130 000 if the correlation was perfect, but assuming a high 0.7 correlation, a 1 in 750 IQ, which is 145 (with the US norm where sd = 15 points).

That’s why contrary to what i believed, Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Caltech colleges, and Yale and Harvard Law school are not filled with pure geniuses. For Yale and Harvard Law schools wich have the highest average scholastic test for any professional school, 171 LSAT (or 1 in 100 among mostly future graduates people) , the average IQ is only 130. For most graduates in other schools, it is 120-125.

So even if scholastic tests, have helped american universities to pick very intelligent people, the correlation level has a very big consequences, because those school gathered far less intelligent people they would if they used strictly IQ test. And MBA have even much lower level of students IQ, and in the 80ies and 90ies, the average IQ of top MBAs was a mere 110 IQ, now it’s not higher thant 115 in the top 30 schools …

Now i understand better why i felt, having had the opportunities to know many of top MBA graduates, that on average , they were not very intelligent people.

  33. Yale and Harvard have 173 LSAT median (and also average) score, which is effectively 1 in 100, and gives an average IQ of 130. That means that half of their students couldn’t even enter mensa ! when you know how easy are those tests (i don’t know anybody in my family that would be put off by a mensa test, even with a hangover).

    Bruno from Paris

    January 2, 2017 at 9:35 am

  34. Harvard college average LSAT is 166. We can imagine that the college students who wants to enter JD are not underaverage in scholastics results. 166 is 93%. So with the same line of reasoning (+1SD for people who wants to graduate and a 0.7) correlation, it gives you a 125 average IQ.

It is 2 IQ points under the average IQ you get from Harvard college students average SAT, but it’s certainly due because people the average SAT is from the best scores obtained, and the 166 must be the first try reported average and 2) because the correlation between IQ and both SAT and LSAT are guestimates. But it’s seems quite consistent.

Harvard college must be 125-127 IQ on average, Harvard JD 130 IQ, and Harvard MBA around 120 IQ.

    Bruno from Paris

    January 2, 2017 at 10:19 am

    • This is a close enough assessment. I’ve mentioned to Lion before that people who are chosen based on scores on one test tend to regress to the mean on the next one.

      January 2, 2017 at 12:51 pm

    • Bruno, your analysis makes sense. I vote it as the best comment on this thread.

      January 2, 2017 at 3:32 pm

  35. I agree wholeheartedly with the substance of this post.

However, while validly argued, the premise that a 163 on the LSAT is equivalent to a 130 IQ and Obama having a 145 IQ strikes me as extremely dubious.

Obama is more like a 120 Wechsler FIQ. Hes verbally superior, but in terms of math or spatial ability he could well be about average.

If Obama were a real 145IQ–like maybe his brother is–he would have gone to an Ivy undergrad. No ambitious black kid with 1500+ SAT would have to settle for Occidental in the early 80s.

I imagine Obama scored average but lopsidely on his SATS. Eg, 400 Math 650 Verbal.

(Pre95 recentering scores, back when the exam was more difficult. Equivalent to maybe 450/700 now)

    January 2, 2017 at 10:36 am

    • Obama wasn’t ambitious in or leaving HS.

      January 2, 2017 at 11:54 am

  36. There is strong evidence that Obama probably got a 166 (when converted to the modern 180 point scale) on his LSAT. He probably did much worse on his SATs, but if we assume he tried harder on the LSAT that puts his IQ at around 125. Aptitude test scores are the most accurate way to gauge IQ. Lion’s theory that graduating Top 20% has any bearing on his IQ doesn’t make any sense. An IQ of 115-120 is more than sufficient to excel at Law School. Having an IQ of 130 vs 115 might mean you can get away with studying less, and there are maybe one or two classes (Federal Income Tax and certainly any of the higher level tax courses) where a higher IQ is quite helpful, but for the most part, anything above 115 or so is just gravy.

    January 2, 2017 at 1:40 pm

    • “An IQ of 115-120 is more than sufficient to excel at Law School. ”

More than sufficent to excel at a TTT school, NOT at all sufficient to excel at Harvard Law School.

You simply don’t understand how much more difficult Harvard is compared to the average law school.

      Lion of the Blogosphere

      January 2, 2017 at 2:03 pm

      • It isn’t more “difficult”, just more demanding. A nearly perfect Torts exam at Harvard looks exactly the same as a nearly perfect Torts exam the University of Georgia. The difference is that at UGA there will be fewer people turning in nearly perfect exams so a student can get away with slacking somewhat and not be punished as badly for it on account of the less demanding curve.

I’m well qualified to speak on this issue. I scored a 172 on my LSAT’s, which allows me to look comfortably down on Obama and his measly 166. I had a good friend at college who scored the same and went to Harvard Law. I went to the University of Miami because I didn’t have a high enough GPA to get in to and Ivy as a regular white kid (though if I was black I certainly could have) and because Miami offered me a full academic scholarship. I finished my first year in the top 4% at UM and I know he ended up graduating magna cum laude which was top 10% by that point at Harvard. We emailed a lot first year and the thing I noticed is that he talked a lot less about cocaine and screwing undergraduate sorority girls. And that’s the bottom line difference. Harvard requires less screwing around if you want to maintain top grades. But that is a matter of work ethic and discipline, not raw intelligence.

There is noting about law school that so hard it requires an extremely high IQ to have success. It isn’t theoretical physics. There isn’t a single course at Harvard Law school that rises to the level of intellectual rigor of even an undergraduate Organic Chemistry class. Law school is basically Introduction to Symbolic Logic applied to various practical subject areas. A student like Obama with an IQ of 120-125 isn’t going to be at any huge disadvantage in terms of making the Top 20% versus somebody like me with an IQ north of 130. As long as you have a firm grasp of the material and a reasonably sharp mind a civil procedure essay exam answer can only be so good. Maybe he has to study an hour more each night. Maybe it is more important that he get in with an excellent study group. But there is nothing stopping him so long as he applies himself.

        January 2, 2017 at 3:42 pm

      • “There is noting about law school that so hard it requires an extremely high IQ to have success.”

It’s because you’re being graded on a curve, and when the curve is people smart enough to get into Harvard, then it’s very hard to be in the top 20% of the class. At a TTT school, on the other hand, it’s easy.

      2. Everyone in the elite subscribes to the same theories.
      3. His children inherited half their genes from Michelle. Despite that, Malia will be attending Harvard. (Yes, I know that she would be given a huge amount of leeway given that not only is she black, but her father is the Nobel-prize-winning first black POTUS lightworker. But it’s still Harvard.) Michelle was obviously a beneficiary of affirmative action, but that has nothing to do with Barack’s own intelligence. Trump’s current wife, Melania, doesn’t seem very smart at all. Obama wanted to marry black, and there simply aren’t very many black women at Obama’s level. Maybe he was really into tall women.
      4. Believing in affirmative action doesn’t make him unintelligent. Very intelligent people can have very stupid religious-like beliefs. Mitt Romney believes in Mormonism, pretty stupid if you ask me.
      5. He was so good at it he became POTUS. Exceptional skill at doing something you personally don’t approve of is still exceptional skill.

I was heavily involved in both the programming and math supporting a textual analysis of that theory. In doing that, we were exposed to the only documents that were incontrovertibly written by Obama: His Chicago Law class lecture notes. They border on gibberish. He completely misuses words and fails at common grammatical constructs and simple subject-verb agreement. He’s very much not a literary genius.

  41. I think there is too much being addressed here. Let’s look narrowly at Lion’s claim: he believes that Obama has an IQ of roughly 143, based on graduating from Harvard Law School and on being elected to the head of the Law Review.

I don’t think that these two data points support Lion’s claim. We know that Obama, as a minority, had all kinds of affirmative action bennies operating in his favor. We know that he merely transferred into Columbia instead of getting in outright, and that he ended up at Occidental College upon graduating from a prestigious high school. He really has no record of accomplishment to speak of and any academic records are largely sealed.

What we have is a portrait of a man whose had a lot of help on the way up, whose had a lot of people running interference for him, and who probably bucks the bell curve enough to make him one of the smartest black people on the planet. However, the amount of system gaming that was done on his behalf, including at Harvard law school, seriously mars the view that his Harvard credentials indicate anything.

That’s why it is usefull to factor-in the other parameters as Lion does: graduating in the top 20% from Harvard in a quite competing environment and being a president of HLR competing against 18 other students (who had generally edited an issue of the review during their first year or at least written an article in one the issues). I’ve seen that in the last 10 years, 8 presidents were ashekenazi jewish.

On the down side, Steve Sailer has written that the volume (104) edited under Obama, is the least cited volume since HLR existence, implying Obama did the worst job in selecting articles (but Sailer is probably not objective and i don’t have access to the data) ….

So it is fair to say that Obama must be somewhere between 125 IQ and 140 IQ wich is really extremely intelligent. Obama is really gifted (probably 2 sd above the average white people) without being highly gifted (probably under the 3 sd level).

I know Pumpkin Person said 140 IQ, Lion said 145 IQ, but my guts tell me more of a 130 IQ enhanced by a very motivated character.

    • It could be that Obama selected articles related to diversity or for affirmative action reasons rather than scholarly merit. That’s in keeping with Obama’s philosophy, and it doesn’t mean he haw low IQ, it means he has moral beliefs you disagree with.

  43. OK, here’s an example of how smart Obama is. He did this Security Council thing and everyone is tied up in knots about it. The trucons, which Otis thinks are dead, consolidate power in Congress using this symbol as a cudgel against the hapless Democrats.

The trucons then tie up all of 2017 with their evil agenda, destroying Trump’s populist movement.

Trump would really be better off with a Democratic congress. Instead, he fights McConnell and Ryan his entire first term. Meanwhile, the lying MSM mocks him relentlessly.

    Obama is smart.

  44. Obama masterfully defeated the arrogant and egregious Clit-couple during the spring and summer of ’08 to win the democratic nomination. This is his single greatest life accomplishment, and he deserves respect for this alone.

  45. Yes, you don’t get into Harvard Law unless you’re a genius. Here’s an example of the level of writing from one of Obama’s peers at Harvard Law School who “doesn’t test well” and yet managed to survive the “blind” grading system with no problems:

    To pick a random paragraph:

“A rough measure of literateness (tendency for an individual to include reading and writing as a major part of his/ her life) is attempted by the variable examining the number of books in the individuals home while growing up and presently; and finally, age and sex of the individual will also be measured.”

Christopher Hitchens describes it as unreadable:
“To describe it as hard to read would be a mistake; the thesis cannot be “read” at all, in the strict sense of the verb. This is because it wasn’t written in any known language.”

    • No one is saying that Michelle Obama is a genius, we are saying that BARACK Obama is a genius.

Although that fact that Michelle O had a $325,000/yr job as a hospital administrator shows you that brains don’t equal money in the United States.

      • Yes, but you are saying that certain accomplishments at Harvard Law School equals a certain level of intellect. If HLS top 20% equals IQ 140 EVEN FOR A STAR AA student, what does Harvard Law graduation equal?

        January 4, 2017 at 2:08 pm

      • Grading is blind. Top 20% is top 20% regardless of sex, race, or sexual orientation.

Why is it so hard for you to understand how a CURVE works? Everyone willing to memorize some legal stuff passes, but to do better than 80% of the students requires extreme skill at taking law school exams.

  46. This is all speculation, but I’ve got to go with Lion of the Trumpeter over LotBS on this one:

    1. Top 20% at Harvard Law. So we’re supposed to believe that a system that selected and passed Michelle Obama through to graduation was completely blind to race in grading their star first black Law Review editor? No one who’s witnessed how NAM’s are treated in elite institutions would buy this.

Apart from this very weak broth you got nothin:

    2. His half-brothers. First they only share 1/4 of his DNA and of the 20 or so to choose from, your two examples don’t even prove higher than a 120’s IQ.

    3. His literary career. Jack Cashill (a ghost writer himself) has absolutely obliterated the notion that Obama wrote “Dreams of My Father” and he brilliant dissects the genuine literary works of Obama:

    Then there’s the negative evidence:

    1. He wasn’t even a National Merit “Commended Scholar” which everyone with even a 130+ IQ received.

    2. Despite an upper-middle class family background including a prestigious prep school the best he could do for undergrad out of high school was Occidental.

    3. His genuine writings are muddled and don’t convey a high level of intellect.

So while he’s not stupid, the notion that he has a 140+ IQ is simply not supported by the evidence. I’d peg it at around 125. He’s a GW Bush, JFK or John Kerry and not a Clinton, Nixon or Gore.

    Mercy Vetsel

    January 4, 2017 at 2:03 pm

    • Jack Cashill is a rightwing hack. He also believed that Obama was born in Kenya.

If Obama’s writing similar to the writing of a book that was written AFTER Obama wrote his memoir, then Occam’s Razor is that the subsequent author copied from Obama, and not the other way around.

      • I don’t know that to be true but be that as it may, the case he makes demolishes the notion that Obama can write at the level of Dreams of My Father. That’s the thing about good writing and solid arguments — they both stand on their own regardless of who writes them.

Links to good arguments you’ve made over the years probably get similarly and unfairly dismissed as the rantings of a white nationalist (the standard media term for people who talk about HBD) obsessed with race and IQ.

      • It’s not similar to a book written afterwards. It’s similar to the writings of Bill Ayers right down to very specific shared metaphors, similar situations and lots of nautical lingo that wouldn’t be familiar to someone without a passion for sailing.

Obama’s second book was a completely different writing style. Ayers even jokingly admits to writing the book on several occasions:

If you actually read Jack Cashill’s articles on this, I think you’d find it utterly convincing.

        January 4, 2017 at 2:27 pm

      • I almost forgot. There was a FRIENDLY biography called “Barack and Michelle: Portrait of an American Marriage” that independently confirmed the Jake Cashill thesis.

With the deadline pressing, Michelle recommended that Barack seek advice from “his friend and Hyde Park neighbor Bill Ayers.”

To flesh out his family history, Obama had taped interviews with various family members. Andersen writes, “These oral histories, along with a partial manuscript and a truckload of notes, were given to Ayers.”

Andersen quotes a Hyde Park neighbor: “Everyone knew they were friends and that they worked on various projects together. It was no secret. Why would it be? People liked them both.”

Andersen continues, “In the end, Ayers’ contribution to Barack’s ‘Dreams From My Father’ would be significant – so much so that the book’s language, oddly specific references, literary devices and themes would bear a jarring similarity to Ayerss own writing.”

      • It is generally known, is it not, that entire sections of the book are completely made up and bear no relation to real events whatsoever? The black HS friend, for instance. The HS party. This I’ve heard from my friends who grew up with him. So, given that events described never happened and people described do not exist, I’m not really sure how one could determine who wrote it.

  47. FWIW, roughly 40% of HLS graduates received a JD/LLM with honors in 1991. I was an underachiever and did not.

Every course was blind graded. IIRC, one wrote down one’s student ID number on the examination books.

All grades were posted on the corridor walls by ID number on fan-fold computer paper.

  49. From Pumpkin Person blog :

“During the interview Goldberg [Jeffrey Goldberg, editor of The Atlantic] said that Obama has very little patience for people who are not as smart as him, and while Goldberg concedes that Obama’s very, very smart, he thinks Obama considers himself to be very, very, very smart.

Since an IQ of 100 is average intelligence, I think an IQ of 110 makes you smart, and an IQ of 120 makes you very smart. Thus it follows that an IQ of 130 makes you very, very smart, while an IQ of 140 makes you very, very, very smart. So if both men were familiar with the IQ scale, Goldberg might rate Obama 130, while Obama would rate Obama 140.”

-> I’m with Jeffrey Goldberg (editor of the excellent liberal magazine The Atlantic, one of my favourite after NewYorker – when they were not obsessed with Trump) as interpreted by Pumpkin Person, i think that Obama is a 130 IQ who believe to be a 140 IQ and not a 140 IQ, and even less a 150 IQ !

–> And he’s not pretentious, and even is modest, in a subjective way : black from Africa being 70, he’s half black/white race would be 85 on average (like black american), so he is 3 sd above his reference group, and so he’s like a 145 IQ if he had been white. And if he compares himself with Condo Rice, his wife etc. , he crushed them all.

  50. Great article. It kills me when I hear about how dumb he is. People are so ignorant. I’m sure 99% of the people saying that don’t have Harvard law degrees. I’m in law school and several of my teachers graduated from there. They are some of the smartest people I’ve ever met. I recently started a blog about my law school experience check it out if you have a chance.

  51. I was watching some confrontation interviews of O’Reilly with “real people” in his shoe : One was a Crimson President, Bobby Samuels, who is now a Stanford MBA student (the toughest MBA to get into) : the guy was destroyed by O’Reilly. He answered completely like a fool. It’s impossible that he ever had an IQ above 130 IQ. And O’Reilly was very fair play with him.

Then, i saw an interview with a high school Bounder Student, Jesse Lange. The guy has a bachelor from Tufts now and working in the industry. He was standing up to O’Reilly in a marvellous way. It is almost incredible how good such a young student was defending a very difficult position (that some leftist drug users weren’t saying any bad thing on high school).

Even it Tufts is obviously good, the education system is not fair when you compare performance and trajectories.

Another video, where despite O’Reilly beeing right on the matter, he clearly looses the debate against Stewart arguments (that runs like it’s another example of acting like biased channel cherry picking facts for the purpose of feeding a narrative baed on populists emotions) :
