Washington Post admits that immigrants lower wages

You know how the MSM has been telling us for years that immigrants don’t lower wages?

In fact, just three days ago in an article criticizing Trump’s speech to Congress, The Washington Post repeated that immigrants have “little to no negative effects on overall wages and employment of native-born workers in the longer term.”

But today, in an article about the problems of immigrants returning to Mexico after being deported, the Post matter-of-factly states:

More returnees means lower wages for everybody in blue-collar industries such as construction and automobile manufacturing, where competition for jobs is likely to increase, economists say.

Funny how the normal laws of economics work in Mexico (more people competing for jobs means lower wages), but the same laws don’t work in the United States. Because of magic American exceptionalist soil or something?

(The idea for this post came from commenter “Curle,” thank you.)

  1. You have to understand that by ” immigrants have little to no negative effects on overall wages and employment of native-born workers in the longer term” actually means that immigration does not hurt the wages or employment of Wall Street Bankers.

Of course illegal immigrants are lowering wages of construction and restaurant workers. The use of terms like “overall wages” means lower wages for construction workers are balanced out by higher wages for Wall Street bankers, so overall it is a wash.

Trump’s plan to me seems just totally incoherent. He wants to deport 11 million illegal immigrants. He want to reduce the rate of legal immigration. He wants to increase average GDP growth from 2% to 3-3.5%. GDP growth is basically the product of productivity growth and population growth. Trump wants to decrease population growth. How is he planning to accelerate productivity growth to make up?

    • “Trump’s plan to me seems just totally incoherent”

Why doe that matter? If anyone else had been elected president, we’d be giving the illegal aliens citizenship and opening to borders to even MORE immigration than we had under Obama.

      • Illegal immigration has no bearing on many of your readers, and it doesn’t have much bearing on the alt-right. The reactionary nature of the right wing about losing a White majority nation is warranted, yet often it is too misdirected at the problems of multiculturalism.

The lack of value transference jobs or too many candidates/applicants trying to enter a lucrative, cushy, and status inducing career is the main issue among many young people, especially young White people. The same reason why Manhattan’s real estate is overpriced and could only house a limited number of residents.

Illegals/non-whites are not taking away manufacturing jobs, or prole work like the police, the firemen and highly skilled trades. Many young proles and SWPL in making types, are simply too entitled to work and pay their dues in grit jobs that are viewed as beneath them.

      • Lion: they never really started out in the mailroom (read C. Wright Mills’ the Power Elite if you want an idea of what it was like in the post-WW2 era). What is true is that the number of good jobs has greatly shrunk and you need a college degree (and often a prestigious one) in lots of areas you didn’t before, and that’s particularly true in journalism, which means the pundits and reporters are much more closely tied to the elite than they used to be.

      • I’m in touch with a legal Mexican who works out of a pizzeria in Manhattan, and he jokes in Spanish with me about the lack of blanquitos (White folks in Spanish), who are willing to knead pizza dough and bake a pizza pie that has the right amount of texture in flour, sauce and cheese with our currently atmosphere of anti-immigrant. He told me recently 2 of his illegal Mexican co-workers left the pizza joint on the run, fearing Trump’s deportation policies, and so the owner hired 2 White college kids who just couldn’t hack it after a few weeks of training. He told me his boss had to let them go, since customers were noticing the difference in the pizza.

      • JS: Do you think we haven’t heard those stories from employers a million times? Yes when they try to hire legal workers for the same price as the illegal ones they’re not as good. The fact that they have to pay legal workers more in order to function as a business is a feature not a bug.

      • So white kids make shittier pizza.. big fucking deal. At least their kids won’t grow up to be MS13s and they aren’t culturally out of place in Manhattan.

Maybe those white kids will go on to invent a better way of making pizza so they don’t have to keep grinding it the same stupid repetitive way every single time.

Maybe your pizzeria friend is just bitter he has to pay higher wages and couldn’t charge more for pizza because those same white kids didn’t want to pay the higher prices.

Too many selfish Americans trying to live at the expense of other Americans. It all ends here. With Donald J. Motherfucking Trump.

JS perhaps you should show a little more gratitude to America, without which your cushy Canadian lifestyle wouldn’t be possible. I can’t wait for us to stop subsidizing medicine across the world (you’ll be paying your fair share for defense and for healthcare soon enough). Your prices are about to double and our prices are about to plummet 80%.

      • Another comment on the pizzeria guy:

Maybe he will now have to make the pizzas himself and bring some authenticity back to the product (you know… the way businesses were run back in the day).

Now he also won’t be able to own 5 pizzerias and simply collect rents. This will free up economic value for another 5 entrepreneurs to own their own pizzerias, make their own high quality pizzas and increase money circulation. So in other words, striverism is already being punished. You want to make tons of money? tough luck, you now have to make it the hard way.

This is a positive sign for American society when owners have to do work themselves to keep a certain level of quality. This will help level inequality in American society as well as false wealth will no longer be allowed (really wealth that is attained by exploiting illegal labor and taxing our social benefits system through taxpayer subsidized negative externalities).

        Please keep the winning coming.

PS: I have a hard time even believing white kids can’t make pizza. There are plenty of high quality artisanal craftsmen in hipster Brooklyn who revel in this sort of shit. Surely in a city of 8 million he could find two decent employees. Sometime smells fishy and doesn’t add up here.

      • “Illegal immigration has no bearing on many of your readers, and it doesn’t have much bearing on the alt-right.”

This is utterly not true. I and my social cohort are the cohort to which this commented is directed, and illegal immigration has completely reshaped our lives. It may be true that illegal immigration isn’t affecting us professionally (I and my friends are all upper level professionals-from medical specialists down to upper middle class engineers/pharmacists/etc. Note we are professionals in flyover country-not in the Northeast or in California). Its also true that the progressives in this group actually agree with the statement. But they are lying to themselves.

Everyone I know makes housing choices based on race (including the ones that won’t admit it). The majority of folks I interact with send kids to private schools (typically religious). The workers (usually fathers) spend an inordinate amount of time driving to work because they have to avoid raising their families in crappy neighborhoods and going to crappy schools. I have a progressive friend couple whose male half drives an hour to work one way to avoid living near work where a lot of Hispanic immigrants live. I have another progressive friend couple who moved a mile and a half when they had kids to get their kids into a, frankly, whiter school district. While these are anecdotal, they are entirely commonplace. To put it in simple terms, professionals make one of three choices when structuring their lives: private school, homeschool, or drive an hour to work to insulate their families. And this isn’t in New York City, St Louis, or Chicago (where the bad neighborhoods are REALLY bad). Its in middle America.

You know those funny stories about rich people in New York competing for kindergarten slots? Middle America does it too-they are reacting to modern America in the ways that I have described, above. But they are essentially doing the same thing.

      • In defense of JS’s “legal Mexican,” white girls in high school and college make VERY shitty employees if they’re allowed any freedom of movement (they do ok if they’re confined and can’t sneak out of sight). I’m sure there are exceptions, but as a general rule, they do as little as possible until a manager tells them to do something specific. It appears they’re too distracted by their social lives to be bothered with putting in even the minimum amount of work to justify their paychecks. And it seems to be much worse in businesses that employ more than one of them.

This is especially true in food service. The absolute worst waiters/waitresses I’ve had were teenage white girls – hands down. And this includes the one I had just yesterday. A typical scenario: You ask her (because she walk right by your table and thinks nothing of your glass being empty) for a refill of your water. She says “ok” and takes your glass. You wait. Then you wait some more. By now, you’re pissed off because not only do you not have your water, but because you also notice that you’re only one of two customers in the entire restaurant. Being such a slow day, you wonder why it is that she can’t seem to get her job done. You get up to ask about your drink, and when you find her, she’s running her mouth with some other teenage waitress. She doesn’t even apologize, despite the fact that you had to get up from your table.

    • GDP growth means nothing. Absolutely nothing. The only thing that matters is GDP growth per capita. Importing 3rd world trash lowers GDP per capita in addition to lowering wages for the working class and raising the cost of living for everybody else.

      • Holy carp Otis! Thanks for bringing up “per capita”. You see this everywhere. Our local government wants to build low cost housing, saying it will bring in more property taxes. They completely ignore the per capital decrease in taxes and the problems that will cause for schools and other services. Economists tell us Japan is in trouble because their population is going to fall, completely ignoring the likelihood that GDP per capital will continue to go up.

If an immigrant will contribute less to GDP than the average American, then GDP per capita will go down after he’s here. It’s that simple.

    • I’m tired of leftists claiming that immigrants grow the economy as if that has to be a good thing for America. It’s not. Economic studies show that all the growth created by immigrants is consumed by the immigrants themselves. As well as reducing wages by $400B annually and increasing taxes for those forced to subsidize them and their little their anchor bastards. An illegal with three kids costs American taxpayers more in education alone than they even earn.

      March 4, 2017 at 4:45 pm

      • A conservative average cost of education in an urban area is $12k/year. The average Mexican immigrant woman in the US bears 3.5 children. The cost of medicare is $12K/year. Income working full time at minimum wage is less than $15 K/year. There are also costs of pregnancy and children’s health, emergency room medical care, transport infrastructure, incarceration, spanish translators, and so forth. So it’s actually a gross understatement that illegals cost taxpayers more than they earn.

      • Although the country as a whole also consumes more in services than it pay in taxes (that’s why we borrow so much each year). But Mexicans are definitely worse than the average American and much worse than the kind of immigrants that ought to be selected for. That’s why we should also offer to pay people post 1964 immigrants to renounce their citizenship.

        Magnavox

        March 4, 2017 at 8:12 pm

      • That’d be like a reverse brain drain. It’s not possible though because no country is stupid enough to give those people citizenship (the policy would be crafted in a non racist manner so it’d probably be available to prove whites as well unless it explicitly carves out post 1964 immigrants which is the only way around making it an explicitly ethno-nationalist policy). Maybe some African countries will basically sell their land ala reverse imperialism style to our unwanteds. Our 85 IQ citizens are probably better for Zimbabwe than their indigenous 70 iqer’s.

The fact this policy is now being discussed in detail on this blog is a sign of the times. We’ve moved from stage 1 to stage 2 (previously the idea has been floated here about paying to renounce citizenship, but nobody bothered with details because it was so far removed from the national discourse).

      • I can’t believe someone at this point can actually claim that Keynes was wrong in any way. In particular, I am amazed people believe Japan is a bad place. Population decline is great for the country, and young people in Tokyo have a much better life than those in Manhattan. The only way one can criticize Japan is McMansions don’t exist. But really, urban life there is much better than virtually all of the US. No crime. Great transit. Modern apartments. Lots of bars and restaurants that young people can afford to visit regularly. Even consumer goods like motorcycles are way more popular in Japan due to relative cost.

Libertarianism is an utterly failed, delusional ideology. It has no success stories, and it exists only due to Rockefeller Foundation funding so as to co-opt the right into believing money is scarce. While fixing the quantity of currency does allow for coordinated exchange rates, Keynes at least proposed a solution that was scientific, humane, and rational – the Bancor. Libertarians want to use baseball cards. Oh, I mean gold.

      • The great thing about Japan is that you can live in a “poor” neighborhood but it’s still safe and non-dysfunctional.

That fact alone gives Japan a big increase in standard of living compared to the U.S.

Unfortunately, Japanese work culture sucks. In Japan, you have guys working 100 hour weeks, and you have guys sitting in their parents house without jobs playing videogames all day because they can’t find a job.

      • It’s not possible though because no country is stupid enough to give those people citizenship

A lot of these people either already are foreign citizens or qualify automatically for foreign citizenship in their own country of origin or that of their parents or grandparents. Plus you yourself gave reasons why it would be in a foreign countries interest to allow it. And that’s without all the levers that the US could use to bully and browbeat other countries into going along with.

Never before have big employers tried so hard to hand over chunks of their business to contractors. From Google to Wal-Mart, the strategy prunes costs for firms and job security for millions of workers…

    E. Rekshun

    March 4, 2017 at 4:12 pm

    • Contractors usually make more than the actual employees and get to set their own terms/hours. Contractor workers make it easier for unions to form on industry level scales.

Need an IT professional.. gotta talk to the IT union about prevailing contractor rates. Any contractor that tries to undercut and go solo will be met with blacklisting and companies that use scabs won’t be able to meet scale demands (you can hire one or two workers, but if you need to staff 100 or 1000 you will need the Union’s scale). Actually this is a great de-scaling incentive. Walmart and Google will destroy themselves.

Our enemies are beyond stupid, they are suicidal. Then again they always have been suicidal, it’s just that now their corporations have decided to toss their hats into the ring.

  4. I feel like I need to clarify what exactly NeoGaf Off Topic is.

I have never claimed that NeoGaf is some sort of nerve center for leftism. What I have said is that NeoGaf Off Topic is the number 1 site of the “woke” Left.

There are different types of Leftism: there is the mainstream NYT/WaPo type Leftism, there is the wilted 60s flower DKos type Leftism and then there is the SJW woke Leftism of the internet generation.

The liberals you meet in real life will overwhelmingly be of the NYT/WaPo variety: intelligent, cosmopolitan and shallow. While they support BLM and open borders, it is more of a cultural thing with them; their leftism is about identity, not principles. These people are pro NAM in theory, but in practice they avoid NAM’s in real life when choosing their neighborhoods and schools for their children. This group is also very pro trade and pro Wall Street, and is absolutely not willing to pay more taxes, which distinguishes them from the wilted 60s flowers at DKos. The entirety of this group is financially well off. This group is extremely white, whiter than the alt Right even.

The DKos types are true believers, but they maintain some of the old Democratic hostility towards big business and Wall Street. They are absolutely willing to pay higher taxes, or at least for other people to pay higher taxes. They care about immigration now because of Trump, but before Trump came along it was a side issue. For the most part, these people are also a little nuts. They are your Mondale style liberals and boy are the Dems fucked if these loons ever take over the party (they won’t). They trend older and like the NYT/WaPo liberals, they are overwhelmingly white.

NeoGaf, or more specifically, those who post on the political threads in the NeoGaf Off-Topic boards (called “PoliGaf” amongst themselves), are something very different. They are young. They are extremely diverse, probably only about 60% white with a huge number of non Americans. While they can be delusional, they tend to be so without being absolutely unhinged like many of the DKos’ers are. Although some of them are hostile to big business and Wall Street, nobody there considers it their top issue. Unlike the Kos’ers and the NYT/WaPo readers, they see very clearly that contemporary American politics are 100% about race, making them a sort of left wing mirror of the alt Right. They hate white people and aren’t shy about admitting it and all of them agree that immigration is the most important issue.

There’s no way it’s the “number 1 site of the woke left” when the vast majority of the threads there aren’t even political, and the ones that are consist of someone posting a link to and excerpt from a news article, without comment, and a bunch of insubstantial replies like “Oh my God” or “he should be impeached.” Plus, it’s a video gaming site. People go there to talk about video games, and stay to talk about other things in the off-topic forum. It only represents a subset of the population who’s interested in video games.

Nor is there anything unusual about coming back to a forum of like minded people to discuss it. Within reason, of course. That’s part of what forums are for. To discuss issues with people who are interested instead of bugging family and friends with it.

Having said that, I don’t think Otis is demented. I find some of his NeoGaff reports interesting. But I think he’s at risk of becoming preoccupied. I can sympathize as I’ve done the same with opposition forums. And that’s half the reason you’re here yourself — to bash Trump.

      • Yes, there is no question that the illegal immigrants make great workers especially in service industries such as food. In a perfect world we could use them.. but alas we don’t live in a perfect world so we must settle for inefficiencies for the greater good.

The whole thing is like the house elves in Harry Potter. JK Rowling conveniently left out the deplorable conditions of the elves and how all the food at Hogwarts was made. It’s a sad commentary on the way of the world.

Similar to how drug loving SWPLs (the Williamsburg and Brooklyn types) don’t really think about how many people they’ve helped to kill by fueling the drug trade. Likewise it is how the Wall Street types don’t think about how many lives they’ve destroyed in middle America thanks to Private Equity LBO’s and offshoring, outsourcing, bubble blowing, etc. I hate Ward Churchill, but his term little Eichmans was apt.

Meanwhile a few White college students of Northern European ancestry are fired by their boss who happens to be a SWPL type with the same genetic material, who needs these illegal Mexicans to sustain his business. It’s like getting a few Irishmen to operate a pizza shop and it becomes a disaster. Although his mestizo staff are the typical short Mexicans, 2 out of the 3 look more like Ricardo Montalbán and Ted Cruz than the midget Tattoo of Fantasy Island.

      • The unwilling part will be fixed when EBT benefits are cut off. If they loot, the cops will be authorized to shoot. Once every useless eater white black yellow or green is starving they will gladly take dirty/boring/unglamorous jobs that they previously wouldn’t do because they will know their survival depends on it.

Same as it’s always been in New Amsterdam. No work, no food. People know what to do when their stomachs begin to growl. Incapable is another issue and probably harder to fix, but most everybody is capable of sweeping a floor or making a sandwich.

The real problem is we’ve allowed feminism to destroy the black community destroying the upbringing of black children. A black girl of average intelligence in the 1950’s would have grown up in a two parent household, been told to behave herself and to speak properly and to curtsy. That girl would have grown up and made a good secretary or housemaid to either a white or upper middle class black family.

Today that girl’s name is Laquisha after some mythical tribe from 400 years ago for authenticity. Instead of curtsying she twerks, she speaks in barely comprehensible generation 3 ebonics, and she acts like a degenerate. Don’t get me started on the boys…

We have a lot of rot to fix both white and black. We might still yet have to burn the whole foundation down and start anew, but maybe the termites haven’t yet eaten through everything.

  10. Lion,
I’ve documented at Steve Sailer’s blog that there is no need for large scale immigration. Americans WILL do these jobs:

    Steve,
OT but thought I would share my experience visiting some relatives in the Cleveland Metro Area over Christmas. It seems like the Midwest, including the Cleveland area, offers a controlled study in immigration restriction.

One thing that really stands out is the absence of large numbers of non-black minorities. I stayed and dined in Upper Middle Class Cleveland suburbs and can’t recall seeing more than five Hispanics. In fact, the only non-back minorities I saw were middle class Asians and Indians.

Contrary to the Wall Street Journal, all of the jobs that Americans won’t do are actually done by (gasp!)…. Americans! Construction work, short order cooks, landscaping, janitorial work, etc. was entirely done by white and black Americans. My family and I went to Hudson, Ohio for an afternoon, which is a very affluent suburb between Cleveland and Akron. Driving around, all of the construction workers were American. We then went into an upscale supermarket. Out of the roughly 30 workers that I saw, one was an Asian immigrant. All of the other workers were American (entirely white).

We then went into Downtown Cleveland. When we walked past an upscale condo conversion, I noticed that all of the construction workers and painters were either white or black Americans.

In short, my experience was that it was possible to attain a high standard of living at an affordable price without importing large numbers of immigrants. It then begs the question, what was the point of all of this? It costs an astonishing amount of money in real estate and taxes to maintain Blue Coastal America. Where is all of this money going? Finally, do any of the commenters here have the same experiences in other Midwestern Cities (Columbus, Indy, St. Louis, etc.)?

    • I remember seeing that comment on Sailer’s blog and meaning to second it. I used to live in Cleveland and that struck me the very first summer I lived there: seeing all the lawn crews out, comprised of white and American black guys. “Look at that,” I said to the imaginary liberal interlocutor inside my head, “Americans doing jobs American’s wont do!”

        March 5, 2017 at 6:42 pm

      • That’s even true in rural New Jersey. In resorts up in Sussex County, the hotel maid staff will typically be split between working class white and Hispanic illegal immigrants. But it does prove the point that Americans will do these jobs.

By the way, re Ohio and other places in the Midwest, you can have a much nicer lifestyle at a fraction of the price without importing massive number of immigrants. Mass immigration is a scam. I came to that conclusion 10 years ago but seeing it in person really proves the point.

    • Blue coastal cities need a staff that is efficient, cheap, and good with their hands — the profile of Latinos with Spanish/Southern European and Amerindian genetic material suits our capitalists perfectly.

You figured that Mexicans who are employed at the various high end Japanese restaurants in NYC as sushi chefs, demonstrates that blacks and Northern European proles wouldn’t do as well in these positions.

      • Coastal Elite cities are expensive and the inner core of town commands a high price in real estate, which prevents prole Whites from working at McDonalds. Basically, these cities are a modern day slavery/serf arrangement. non-whites who live in outlying areas commute to the center of town and serve their hedonistic oriented masters who live in them for piecemeal wages.

  11. For those with concerns over illegal immigration and the prospect of amnesty, I’d like to offer a plug for the NumbersUSA organization (https://www.numbersusa.com). They follow immigration issues closely and, more importantly, if you register your e-mail address with them, offer you the opportunity to send pre-written (but modifiable) faxes to your own members of both houses of Congress in a coordinated way. They have millions of members who fax and telephone regularly, and are also getting involved in state immigration issues, where the battle is also being fought effectively.

Thanks to them, I’ve sent, over the past several years, almost 600 faxes to my senators and congress-critters, and it’s cost me nothing, and takes less than a minute each time. Moreover, my faxes are going in at the same time as many thousands of others. Polls indicate that Americans of all ethnicities, including Hispanics, want tighter borders and oppose amnesty, but it can be hard to make these convictions heard over the media’s generally pro-amnesty propaganda. NumbersUSA makes it easy to do so, and at no cost. (They do ask occasionally for contributions, but you don’t have to give anything.)

For the record, I have no connection to the group other than being an appreciative supporter; there may well be other groups out there that are fighting the good fight just as effectively, but I really appreciate the way NumbersUSA allows me to weigh in on immigration issues in such an easy way. So I would encourage everyone with an interest in this issue to check out their website and get involved.

(One of the major ideas they push, by the way, is making the E-Verify system mandatory nationwide. By drying up the supply of jobs available to interlopers, it would lead to more self-deportation. and help free up jobs for citizens and legal residents. It already works to a fair degree on the state level:
