Girls S06E04 Painful Evacuation

So Hannah is pregnant (with the Pakistani surf instructor’s baby) and she gets offended when the doctor (who I think is the doctor she had an affair with back in the second season but that’s so long ago it’s hard to remember) tells her how he can set her up with an inexpensive abortion.

Lena Dunham is a bigtime feminist, so surely she would use this scenario to demonstrate why abortion should be legal, right?

Ray is still my favorite character.

  1. Colin Quinn’s character is supposed to be dead? Right after the black customer character dropped dead? His little speech about the gay train was mildly funny.

Hannah sticking her iPhone in the toilet so her mother could see her discharge was gross.

    • Every episode of Girls must show gross Hannah stuff.

      • Hannah is gross for the sake of being gross. Durhamm thinks she is sticking it to the patriarchy thru her sickening antics. She is also giving guys insight as to how she views masculinity.

  2. Regarding the abortion suggestion, it’s like the surf guy’s comment on her pubic hair, or basically all of Hannah’s relationships with men. The content of what a man says to her doesn’t matter. In fact, the more ‘right’ or in line with her previous professions of value the worse. She takes the contrary position just as a power move, as a perverse assertion of some sort of immature understanding of independence and full adulthood. The one exception that proves the rule as that phrase goes, is the gay guy. He can out bitch her.

It’s great that she got knocked up and that the doc made this suggestion. One of her defects may shift her to growth.

This episode struck me as showing a sort of generational premonition that they’ll have to grow up faster and more unpleasantly than they’d thought or been lead to believe. “That got real fast.”

So Ray and Shosh marry, and Marne and nutjob get back together as a married couple; classic comedic match or re-matchmaking arc.

  3. Yes I’d put Shosh with Ray, but Marnie should be with Charlie from previous seasons; I think deep down she actually wants a man who’s headstrong.

  4. Wow. This definitely changes things. I am intrigued at how they handle the motherhood issue. I have faith in them to do a good job. (Or at least a thought provoking job.)

  5. Hey, what happened to “spoiler alert”??? Anyway, it’s no big deal to have the big reveal spoiled. I haven’t seen it yet so I don’t know if Hannnnnah is going to abort her little mocha child. I would say no, because they are going to want to make some kind of point about the glorious, wondrous wonderfulosity of mixed-race children.

    • I’m not entirely sure there was a point to the surf instructor being played by a Pakistani actor. Maybe Lena Dunham just thought he was good looking.

  6. the baby and the movie are how hannah and adam get back together. adam likes kids (he flipped out when an ex-girlfriend told him she had an abortion a few seasons ago). so if hannah keeps the baby, and jessa continues being a screw-up…
