American Truck Simulator bugs

Look at that 65 mph speed limit sign on a regular city street. One of many bugs in this game. It’s not as polished as Overwatch.

But still, not buggy enough to make me stop playing. A very strangely enjoyable game. Although I don’t see myself become one of those total truck-sim geeks with a steering wheel gas/brake/clutch pedals setup that costs hundreds of dollars, plus side monitors to see your left and right mirrors.

  1. Blizzard’s super effective gimmick as a gaming studio is polishing other people’s gaming ideas. “World of Warcraft” is basically a redone “Everquest.” The real time strategy games Warcraft 1 – 3 and Starcraft 1 – 2 are based on the Dune PC games from the early 90s. “Overwatch” is “Team Fortress 2.” This polish makes their games last 1.5 decades or more. Just recently they announced that they’re releasing an HD version of the first “Starcraft” game (from 1997).

One of these days a gaming studio is going to make a game that endures for centuries.

  2. Surely VR will eventually be the way to go here, not additional screens. What’s the state of VR these days? I hear bits now and then but really don’t know much about it. There are YouTube videos for this game showing a guy playing with VR glasses… hard to evaluate though.

    • With the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive headsets, VR is practical for playing games today. I think there will be a lot of personal variation as to how long each person will want to spend inside the headset but it does feel quite realistic already.

  4. I wonder if this is our future. Just living virtual reality instead of real life. VR is getting better and better.

  5. Stop playing this danged game and get on that Girls review!!

Also: does the game have truck stops in it? Can you pull over and get a hot dog? Do you have to stop for gas? Serious questions!

    March 27, 2017 at 4:01 PM

    • There are no truck stops, just gas stations and motels and rest areas.

    • There are weigh stations though, at least in California.

    • Does it allow you to listen to crappy country music on the radio while driving? Does it have a CB?

  6. Profile on Scott Adams makes him seem like a total weirdo

However, apparently his ex wife is now his personal assistant? ?? Lion, please apply your investigative techniques to this situation and let us know what you can find out about that…

    • A female reporter at Bloomberg makes Adams (a Trump supporter/skills admirer) seem like a “total weirdo?” Please consider the source. His girlfriend is not his ex-wife. I’m sure the reporter absolutely hated the idea of this 60 year old guy having sex with a woman that looks like Basham.

      March 27, 2017 at 5:15 PM

      • Read the article. States plain as day his ex wife is his personal assistant. The article takes other subtle digs at him/his girlfriend.

      • That’s a pet peeve of mine. When it comes to dating and romance, girls hold nearly all the cards. One of the few advantages enjoyed by men is that the wall comes more gently.

A 60 year old man who is fit and successful dating younger women is the equivalent to young women riding the carousel. In either case, it’s a person taking advantage of enhanced romantic market value to gratify their sexual urges. You can guess which is vilified by female reporters and which is winked at.

    • Well he does live not far from me in Berkeley, so not surprising.

  7. I endorse the idea that Lion of the Blogosphere should play “Dark Souls” and blog about it.

I can’t wait for the hilarity.

  8. Could that simulator help you learn to back a truck?

    March 27, 2017 at 5:53 PM

    • Yes, backing up the truck is painfully difficult.

      • When I lived out East nobody said “back the car,” they always said “back up the car.” And most people said “Route 80” for what people in flyover country all call “I-80.”

        March 27, 2017 at 6:10 PM

      • There are many routes that aren’t interstates.

  9. Can you get into accidents and stuff in the game? What about speeding? Do cops go after you if you speed? Is the sim good enough to train someone to be a truck driver?

    March 27, 2017 at 8:36 PM

    • You get speeding tickets sometimes, but there’s no simulation of pulling to the side of the road and having a cop sternly ask you “do you know why I pulled you over?” You just see “$500 fine” flash briefly on the display.

  10. Instead of driving a truck why don’t you learn how to fly a Boeing 737 on flight simulator:
