Who killed Seth Rich?

with 108 comments

The National Enquirer says the Russians because he knew about their DNC hack. Sounds like something out of the TV series The Americans. I don’t buy it for the simple reason that the deep state wants to pin the DNC hack on the Russians, so if the Enquirer story were true, they would have gone public with that.

So it’s more likely that the leak to the Enquirer is intentional misdirection, because as implied by a recent FOX 5 report, Seth Rich himself leaked the emails to WikiLeaks (according to Julian Assange, the leaks did not come from the Russian government or a state party), and he was killed by pro-Hillary anti-Trump deep-state forces because he knows the leak had nothing to do with the Russians. However, the weakness with this conspiracy theory is that the the murder happened in July, back when everyone thought Trump had zero chance of beating Hillary, so was it worth risking getting caught committing murder just to preserve the Hillary campaign strategy to deflect the DNC hack onto the Russians?

Or maybe you believe it was just random NAM violence? NAMs who didn’t bother to take “his wallet, gold chain, credit cards or a sizeable amount of cash,” perhaps because they suddenly got worried about getting caught and ran away immediately after killing him by shooting him twice in the back. Sometimes NAMs just kill for fun and not for any pecuniary motivation. But if it’s just random NAM violence, why is there allegedly a cover-up and why aren’t the DC police cooperating with the private investigator hired by his family? The private investigator claims that a source inside the police department told him “Rod, we were told to stand down on this case and I can’t share any information with you.”

  1. I agree, deep state all the way. Not a big conspiracy guy but when it comes to the Clintons there is too much smoke.

“Random” NAM violence is deep state violence.

  3. 99.9% chance it is random NAM violence. Involvement by Rossyian agents in crime in the US would make us much safer and would be an improvement.

  4. My take on the theories:

    1. Russia is way too farfetched. I guess they could pull it off, but why would they bother? In general, Russian security forces liquidate Russian dissenters at home and abroad. They don’t pick fights with non-Russians unless there’s an especially good reason. There’s none here.

    2. Black thugs almost always loot their victims. Period. A thug letting his phone and wallet go untouched sounds about as likely to me as a junkie leaving a stash of heroin alone because it belongs to somebody else.

    3. Deep state sounds more plausible than the more “respectable” options. If they found out Seth Rich was in contact with WikiLeaks, then they would have a motive for wanting him dead. They could also exert pressure on the DC police to leave the matter alone.

    4. I’m more inclined to think, however, that Clinton fixers did the job. Since the Democratic Party owns DC politics, I can believe the DNC told the DC police to drop the matter. The Clintons have been accused of ordering hits for decades, and it makes sense that this was just another convenient death for them.

Furthermore, the murder looks a little rough. If I were deep state, I’d want it to look like an accident, and deep state has the means to make that happen. (They can hack your car and turn off the breaks, for example.) The Clinton goons would have a much tighter budget to pull this off, and they’d leave Seth Rich’s goods on him to make sure nothing could be tracked for them, even if it made their cover story that it was black hoodlums appear implausible.

    • Russia is way too farfetched.

And they have no plausible motive. If they wanted Hillary to lose why kill Seth Rich if he was leaking valuable anti-Hillary intelligence to Assange?

Black thugs almost always loot their victims.

They might have panicked and fled before they could loot him if they thought someone might see them. Still unlikely because it would take them only a few seconds for them to grab whatever bling was in his pockets.

Deep state sounds more plausible than the more “respectable” options.

The problem is there would be a paper trail if intelligence agencies ordered the hit. They would have been comfortable hiring a lone hitman to kill him as long as they thought official law enforcement and intelligence would not dig deeply into the real story. But having law enforcement or intelligence agents do it would be too dangerous.

I still think it is more plausible he was killed in some sort of crime (if not black criminals, maybe a mentally disturbed gay lover?) but I wouldn’t rule out a hitman.

      • I think that intelligence agencies have ways of informally contacting dangerous people, or signalling to them discreetly that they want someone offed. (Similar to how Stalin may have had Kirov and Zhdanov whacked in 1934 and 1948 respectively by informally signalling to agencies overseeing them that they were persona non grata.) But yes, that’s another reason why I’m less inclined to think it was deep state than a Clinton goon: why risk documenting something so horrible?

I also think that intelligence agencies could find some sort of pretext for arresting him if they were serious, though some of our lawyer friends here could go into how that is or isn’t likely. But the more I write about this, the less likely deep state seems. Would they really exert all that much pressure to keep the DNC emails from reaching WikiLeaks? I don’t think so. I think they were already busy with dozens of other things.

Meanwhile, I do believe that the Clintons would have sufficient reason for offing Seth Rich.

“I still think it is more plausible he was killed in some sort of crime… but I wouldn’t rule out a hitman.”

This was my reaction up until recently, but I think the stronger the case is that he was in contact with WikiLeaks, the more likely he was killed to silence him. It’s just too much of a leap of faith to believe he was mad about how Bernie was treated, handed over damning emails to WikiLeaks which derailed a number of high profile careers, and then wound up dead from random NAM violence without their bothering to loot him.

Of course, a big part of what I’m proposing, that the Clintons had him offed, depends on whether they’ve done the same to others. There are dozens of hideous stories about people inconvenient to the Clintons ending up dead at a convenient time, but I have to admit I haven’t done a lot of research into that because I just don’t want to believe something that horrible. And hell, I haven’t met anyone who believes the Clinton Cash stuff more strongly than I do!

If the agency is competent they can.

But I’m not sure our Federal law enforcement or intelligence agencies are competent enough to pull something like that off anymore. Would they be able to keep everyone in the know from bragging about offing him on Twitter? Also there are enough Conservatives scattered around in various departments to make a leak risky. The FBI, maybe having flashbacks to the Janet Reno DoJ, rebelled against Comey for closing the case against Clinton. USG intelligence isn’t as centralized as Stalin or Mao’s intelligence organs were.

Why take the risk with an established agency when a hired goon off the streets can kill him just as effectively?

  5. What’s the most similar killing that is widely accepted to have been performed under conditions like the ones you’re hinting at? I bet you’d have trouble finding a good one while there are countless acts of senseless underclass violence like this. You’re not really taking into account the Bayesian priors here and the rarity of murders like the ones you’re describing.

It’s worth noting that not taking his money is as much an argument against the murder being done by a professional as it is against it being done by a low IQ black thug.

    Magnavox

    May 16, 2017 at 12:44 am

A professional hitman would not loot a victim. Basically no one carries enough money to justify risking prison by getting your mitts all over his corpse. Especially when your fee is a lot more.

But yes, it was probably NAM violence, nonetheless.

      Lowe

      May 16, 2017 at 3:24 pm

      • Wouldn’t a hitman try to disguise the murder as an accident or a robbery/mugging “gone wrong”? Unless the point of the hit is to send a message to discourage others. The optimal method in this case would be an assassination that leaves the general public and law enforcement unsuspecting, but scares other potential targets.

It looks like street/gang violence, or a botched robbery, even if you leave the body alone. There’s no point touching it.

I imagine the Clintons or the Russians wouldn’t hire or use a stupid hitman, like some semi-literate guy in-and-out of prison. I’m pretty sure that oligarchs and gov’ts can do better than that.

The sort of person they’d use would never roll the body, even if you asked them to. Maybe if you paid a lot for it. It’s a bad idea, from their perspective.

Of course, you’re right that there’s no evidence either way, as far as an assassination goes. If the body had been robbed, I’d consider that virtual proof that there was no hit job. But that didn’t happen.

If so I can think of at least three Jewish liberal males of this age group who have been attacked in DC.

Writer Matt Yiglesies got polar beared by blacks and writer Brian Beultler was shot by black punks over a phone or wallet.

  12. At the time of Rich’s death, the issue wasn’t Trump but Bernie. Rich was supposedly a Berniebro who was shocked by the chicanery of the DNC in putting their thumb on the scale for Hillary. So I’ve never believed that the “Russian Hacking” was actual Russian hacking. The person who actually knows, Assange, had said it was an inside job. But probably the intent was to help Bernie, not Trump.

As for the murder… that’s less important than confirming that Rich was the actual source of the DNC emails. Hopefully, since Trump watches Fox, he’ll say something about this in public, forcing the MSM to say something about it.

Republicans undermine working people’s interests, but they don’t hate them and constantly accuse them of racism (basically the worst accusation the Dems can imagine).

Mitt Romney dislikes low class people, and doesn’t want to do them any favors. That’s just honest elitism, which is way better than the hatred, resentment, and sanctimonious, hypocritical preaching they can expect from the Democrats. Working people make the right choice when they choose Republican, and it is better for their dignity… which is a real thing, here in the non-dork world.

Rich worked for an organization that officially supports legal and social measures that paint him as sub-human, worthy of legalized discrimination, and constant moralizing, more over. He had less than zero dignity. Which is sad, because he can’t change that now.

      • Yeah, we are in a new era. David Duke was never taken seriously because he came too soon. With the rise of near expressly racial political parties (which the Democrats themselves have brought about) there is no way Spencer is going anywhere. The GOP will drift more and more in his direction every year just as the Dems will descend further and further down the rabbit hole of Black Lives Matterism.

I like it when he speaks passionately, from the heart, about “white genocide” and the need for “us” to have “our” own homeland. I just love it. Because he sounds and looks worse than stupid. He’s so much more convincing as a troll.

He’s a guy from the Men’s Rights/pick up artists sphere who has moved into the alt right.

He’s barely 30 I think and thinks feminism is the reason women aren’t chasing after him.

There seems to be a blending together of the Men’s Rights/pick up artists sphere and the alt right online and at event LARPing.

No, I don’t like Richard Spencer because he’s a parasitical opportunist who is either a neo-nazi or someone who pretends to be because he wants to be the younger generations David Duke.

I think he’s a useful idiot for both the Cultural Left and the neo-conservative Republican types.

There’s the intelligent, articulate right – Pat Buchanan, Steve Sailer, Ann Coulter, and many others. And then there’s the LARPing, male bonding, frat boy, attention deficit, hyperactivity disorder duffus right.

The types of “white males” who obsess on fake issues like Cultural Marxism, White genocide, women supposedly hating normal guys and only wanting bad boys/jerks/black guys/criminals etc, these paranoid, low rent racist, sexually inadequate weirdos are not helping advance or promote causes that are important to me.

They are counter productive and contaminate many legitimate issues.

      • Rifleman,

I agree with the general thrust of your critique (not sure about all the details: I read & listen to a lot of alt right material and I don’t think I’ve ever heard any of them say that women only want bad boys and black guys. As for Matt Forney, the only time I’ve ever heard of him was when the TRS guys were making fun of him). But I like some of those guys anyway. I don’t like them as much as I admire, for instance, Steve Sailer (as for Buchanan, he’s a hero, but he’s a bit too lefty for my tastes). I just don’t go into these things expecting to have no serious disagreements. If Spencer were about to be elected to a position where he could actually hurt Jewish people, I’d worry about his anti-Jewish conspiracy ideas. If he came to me for advice, I’d tell him to cool it with the anti-Semitic remarks. But neither of those things is on the horizon. I agree with Greg Johnson’s take on “punching right” (https://www.counter-currents.com/2016/12/punching-right/): “in the battle of ideas, there is no sense in demanding that we present a united front, particularly on issues where there are real disagreements of principle.” We can’t do anything to make the people on our own side that we disagree with go away, “[s]o we might as well find a way to coexist and actually benefit from one another. Let’s state our disagreements like civilized men …”

  18. The lack of any criminal act except for the murder also suggests that it could have been a gang initiation ritual; MS-13 has been increasingly active on the east coast. Could also be what others have speculated, just some low IQ black (or brown) kids killing for the fun of it.

That said, most of the time murder victims know their killer. That’s why homicide investigations almost always begin with the victim’s spouse or significant other and from there expand to family, friends, coworkers, etc. etc. The law of averages indicates then that Rich had at least a passing acquaintance with his murderer.

You’re mixing up two different sets of numbers. When the perp and vic are both the same race, the vic typically knows his killer. However, in black-on-white murders, that rule does not apply. In same-race killings, motives are more specific—turf, personal hatred. In black-on-white murders, the motive is often generic racial hatred, where any white’ll do.

  19. DC has a history of random dumb motiveless murders (I’ve lived here since 1987).

Rich was a Bernie supporter. Not a trump guy. He leaked to wikileaks in order to show BernieBros weren’t crazy when they said the DNC had their thumb on the scales for Hilary. That was all he wanted to do.

Rich, not THE RUSSIANS!!!!!!, was the source of the leaks. Wikileaks walked right up to the line of admitting this yesterday (they’ve repeatedly stated their source was a non-Russian person).

    • You need an edit button Lion.

The Trump leaks story broke almost exactly one hour after the Rich story. I don’t think it’s crazy to say they sat on the story to try to control the narrative.

  20. There is “grainy” security camera footage that shows some aspect of the murder, but the police refuse to make the video public.

Rich’s family, who hired a private investigator to investigate the murder, disavow their own private investigator’s statements about Rich’s leaks to Wikileaks.

    • The private investigator “wasn’t hired by the family.”

Ed Butowsky, a Fox News regular, contacted the parents of Seth Rich and urged them to hire a private investigator. Butowsky offered to cover the fees and connect them with an investigator, according to Brad Bauman, a spokesman for the family. The Rich family hired the detective who had been recommended, Rod Wheeler, a former D.C. homicide detective who is also a Fox News contributor.

  22. I lean towards random NAM violence as well. At the time the stakes weren’t high enough for Hilary’s people to murder the guy, and there are plenty of other people you would think the Clintons would want dead before Rich. And if the Clintons are so good at killing people, how is Trump alive? It would be quite easy for the Deep State to arrange a “stroke” or “heart attack” for an overweight, out of shape 70 year old man.

If I remember correctly, at the time people were saying that Rich was killed to send a message to potential Bernie supporters in the DNC.

  25. If you think that Seth Rich probably leaked DNC emails to Wikileaks (and I do, as the Wikileaks twitter has shown they have a strong interest in Rich), then it would be a hell of a coincidence that he got killed by NAMs.

I don’t see Russia’s motive. I don’t imagine the Deep State would have failed to take the guy’s wallet to frame NAMs.

I think somebody Seth worked with thought he was a traitor and shot him in the back. Did Hillary know? Did Podesta? I sort of doubt it.

Who shot him doesn’t matter that much to me. I’d like to know for certain if he was the Wikileaks source of the DNC emails though. If so, it basically confirms that TrumpRussia is manufactured nonsense. It almost certainly is anyway, but this would be a huge hit on that narrative.

  26. The theory I’ve never seen more seriously considered is that it was a homosexual thrill kill. Generally speaking, if a white liberal guy is out on the streets at 4am with his cell phone, the safe assumption is that he is there for drugs, or gay sex, or both. Google Robert Eric Wone to see that these sorts of slayings are not unknown in the DC gay gentry, and just as with Wone, the DC cops are loath to upset the powerful gay mafia in the Federal Government nomenklatura by aggressively looking into a crime like that.

    • If he was murdered it’s entirely possible he was picked up and questioned beforehand, then dropped off somewhere in the middle of the night. Unless you’ve got a serious plan disposing of a dead body is serious business and having a dead body in a building or vehicle leaves a paper trail of ownership, so dumping him on the street and then shooting would actually be reasonably sensible if you didn’t know whether the call was for him to be questioned or eliminated entirely.

A couple months ago they had a story claiming Trump has a 160 IQ & they’ve had stories about him getting tough with the Russians & during the election there were stories trashing Cruz & Hillary yet virtually no anti-Trump stories

Supermarket tabloid editors have probably been friends with Trump for decades because he was always giving them exclusive interviews when he was just a celeb & now that he’s president they’re probably sucking up to him even more by printing whatever BS he shrewdly feeds them & it benefits the tabloids too because their prole readership is probably largely pro-trump

  31. However, the weakness with this conspiracy theory is that the the murder happened in July, back when everyone thought Trump had zero chance of beating Hillary, so was it worth risking getting caught committing murder just to preserve the Hillary campaign strategy to deflect the DNC hack onto the Russians?

They still had a plausible motive to kill him in July because there was still a risk Comey might reopen the investigation (Didn’t he announce there would be no indictments in June) if more evidence came to light and disgruntled Bernie Sanders supporters were still hoping they could knock her off the D ticket.

  33. A murder of a person by a complete stranger with no connection to the victim is very hard to solve.
If the killer doesn’t touch the victim and just keeps walking there’s no DNA evidence either.

DC claims a homicide clearance rate of 62% for 2015 – So 38% unsolved.
Audacious Epigone claims a lower 56.1% clearance rate for DC
Either way, plenty of opportunities to get away scot-free for either a professional or a NAM.

Still, unless it was a gang initiation, the NAM case seems somewhat unlikely to me.
Why risk a murder charge? Why not just an ordinary ‘knockout game’ attack, followed up by the usual multiple kicks to the head? Then steal everything he owns.
Given our legal system, even if the victim suffers permanent brain injury, the attacker will most likely be able to plead down to a minor assault charge.

    https://mpdc.dc.gov/page/homicide-closure-rates
    http://anepigone.blogspot.com/2013/01/rates-of-unsolved-murder-by-state.html

One more question, what kind of round did the killer use? Has that information been released?

If they were your basic, readily available 9mm, full metal jacket type cartridge, or even cheap hollow points,
then it could be just a NAM killing.

If they were quality bonded hollow points, (i.e. Speer Gold Dots, Federal HST, etc.) of the type not sold in Walmart, usually issued to law enforcement and available to civilians mainly by mail order from specialist ammo sellers, then it would seem to me much more likely a professional job.

  34. The story that Seth Rich hacked the DNC computers and leaked to WikiLeaks has fallen apart.

“Tuesday afternoon, Wheeler [the Rich family’s private investigator] told CNN he had no evidence to suggest Rich had contacted Wikileaks before his death. Wheeler instead said he only learned about the possible existence of such evidence through a [Fox News] reporter.” — Reported today on CNN.

“I don’t know for sure whether [Seth Rich’s] emails went out to Wikileaks.” — Private Investigator Rod Williams, spoken on “Hannity,” May 16, 2017.

Private investigator Rod Williams also said on “Hannity” that he has never seen Seth Rich’s computer, let alone having analyzed it. The computer might be in the possession of the DC police or the FBI, but Wheeler can’t even say for sure which agency has it or whether it has been examined.
