Are SWPL kids becoming shorter?

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/drinking-non-cows-milk-soy-almond-may-affect-childrens-height-study/

It was reported two weeks ago that children who drank more milk were taller, but children who drank milk-alternatives like almond milk and soy milk were significantly shorter.

Who the hell gives their children almond or soy milk to drink? The answer is SWPLs. Stupid SWPLs who think that cholesterol is bad for their kids.

In the future, Harvard will be full of these short little midget people raised on vegan crap.

That is, if shorter stature is uncorrelated with SAT scores. Although I’m not convinced that the Flynn Effect is real, given that the alleged long-time trend of increasing IQs happened at the same time as the long-time trend of increasing height, it is possible that withholding milk and other high-fat high-protein foods from kids will also lower their IQ.

* * *

ASF writes: “Study proves nothing whatsoever. Even though the results may support our dislike for SWPL behavior, we have to be careful to not believe a study just because it purports to support our side.”

How about the evidence that the Dutch are the world’s tallest people, and the Netherlands has the highest per capita milk consumption?

Also, remember my rule that you should always believes studies that show that SWPL foods or behavior are bad, because studies are always biased in the other direction.

  2. From the article, “[t]he study is limited in a number of ways, most importantly in that it is observational and cannot prove that drinking one type of milk over the other causes an increase or decrease in a child’s height.”

    • Too much milk can also interfere with testosterone. The dairy industry keeps their cows pregnant. Which means high levels of progesterone in the milk. Progesterone suppresses testosterone. Having said that I’m a milkaholic drinking nearly two gallons per week growing up. And I’m over 6’2.

Still, I’ve deliberately reduced my milk consumption. For that as well as for the sodium and calcium. People are so concerned about osteoporosis they think they should drink as much milk a possible. But too much can actually lead to kidney stones as well as kidney damage. I doubt two or three glasses per day would hurt. But half a gallon per day probably would.

      • Milk helps you grow. Mark Rippetoe in “Starting Strength” highly commends drinking milk while weight training, stating that he hasn’t seen anything else that’s so effective.

I’m physically very large (tall, broad-shouldered, can put on muscle and fat quite easily), so I don’t drink milk all that often now. I’ve never found it hard to gain weight, and I can generally get large even while laying off the calories.

I think milk is good for people who need to grow (children, people beginning their athletic training, chronic ectomorphs), but people who don’t want to grow any larger should lay off the milk. Same thing with nuts and almonds.

I have little doubt that milk helps brain development too. The general opinion I’ve encountered is that eating red meat helped our ancestors grow bigger, faster brains. So it’s generally good for young people to drink milk to assist with their cognitive development.

      • Milk is the highest quality food available. The cow’s udder is a system for filtering out toxins and delivering clean nutrition. You could easily live almost exclusively on milk day to day with only occasional servings of other foods. You will get fat if you drink a lot of whole fat milk without high physical activity because it’s too calorie dense. But 1% or 2% skimmed milk is about the most nutritionally perfect food widely available in America.

It was widely noted how handsome the irish were on a diet of milk and potatoes, both of which their climate supported very well. Go plug the combination into chronometer or other nutritional calculators. You can live on high quality milk and high quality potatoes indefinitely. It is an excellent diet.

This makes sense, but Rippetoe repeatedly says, “a gallon of milk a day for underweight young men.” Would more milk help a lean, fit, 50 y/o ectomorph, put on muscle? But my frame size is never going to grow.

      • ‘These guys look gross. The only people that want to look like that are goofy, chubby guys who want to show off to their “bros”.’

Look however you want to look. The point of Starting Strength is the get stronger, not leaner. Mark Rippetoe doesn’t care how he looks at this point, and it’s kind of bizarre how his critics imply that a guy in his 50s and 60s should have washboard abs.

“Would more milk help a lean, fit, 50 y/o ectomorph, put on muscle? But my frame size is never going to grow.”

This is just broscience on my part, but I don’t think drinking more milk would make you more muscular all on its own. You would need to be under some sort of intensive exercise regimen too.

Bodybuilders generally have a “bulk phase” and a “cutting phase,” the first being where you put on muscle and gain more fat as a consequence, but the second being where you diet and do more cardio to burn off the fat.

How much muscle could you build at this point? I’m not sure, since we’re just commenting on a blog.

    • I think you’re right. There’s a very strong inverse relationship between height and longevity. In fact, nearly every person who makes it to 100 is much shorter than average. As most people are aware, the average woman lives longer than the average man. But men and women of the same height have about the same lifespan. So the real reason women live longer on average is that they’re shorter on average.

But do the Dutch have lower life expectancy than other Europeans?

        Lion of the Blogosphere

        June 18, 2017 at 9:22 PM

      • I did a quick Google search. The Dutch have a life expectancy of 81.30 years. Very respectable. I then searched for Cretan lifespan and found 82 years.

(Cretans are famous for being healthy, their cuisine being the source of the Mediterranean diet, and being more famous for being hotheaded than tall. In short, a good counterbalance to the Dutch.)

So from looking at this, being tall isn’t necessarily correlated with a shorter lifespan. That said, Asians live very long lifespans and are famously short.

I think one of the problems with being tall, though, is that if you’re tall and thin, you’re quite prone to injury. If you’re tall and large, your joints are prone to getting worn out.

On a side note, I don’t think we’ve really seen the upward limits of average life expectancy yet. Baby Boomers in their 60s and 70s look MUCH younger and fitter than people their age did just 30 years ago. I know plenty of Baby Boomers in their 60s who look middle aged, whereas their predecessors looked like “old people” by this point in their lives.

Compare Trump with Reagan. It’s not exactly fair because Reagan lost a lot of energy from the assassination attempt, but Reagan came off as a doddering, avuncular old man. Trump comes off as a crank much of the time, maybe even most of the time, but the kind of campaigning he did in the last two weeks of the election was unbelievable, where he’d hit five different states over the course of a day. What a beast!

      • The average life expectancy in Netherlands is 81.3 years. So the country with the tallest average height is also one of the longest lived. However, that doesn’t disprove the inverse relationship between height and longevity. Because the negative affect of their height is probably offset by a healthier lifestyle, etc. The real test would be if the shorter Dutch still lived longer than the taller ones.

      • Being larger and stronger is better for health. This is very clear in surgery and trauma survival rates. High caloric throughput is best. You want to eat as much high quality food as you can while remaining lean. Plenty of sugar and starch and fat. You want to be big and hungry. Data to the contrary comes from bad food.

In animal studies they’ve demonstrated that the lab rat chow is bad, not that eating less and being smaller is better. Eating less crap food helps you live longer if crap is all that’s available. Fix the chow and the animals that eat the most and are largest live longest.

This is entirely reflected in humans. Most people are stuck eating food that is bad in exactly the same ways that lab rat chow is bad. Excess PUFA from seed oils and excess methionine and tryptophan and iron. It’s about crap industrialized food with low quality controls.

Feed your kid plenty of milk and honey and he’ll be tall and live a long life if he doesn’t switch over to slim-jims and potato chips.

I can understand why some people feel guilty about eating red meat from mammals. I can almost understand why they feel bad about eating birds. But I don’t understand how anyone can feel bad about eating fish, and I have no idea how anyone can think clams or oysters are somehow more “feeling” than plants are.

      • Veganism is utter nonsense, but between cheese, shellfish (are oysters meat or plants?), and optionally eggs you don’t truly need to eat any meat. Eating a lot of mushrooms also gets you pretty far in terms of what you might be missing on a vegan diet.

The widely available meat in America is utter crap. Eating any industrial pork or chicken at all is a bad idea. Only some of the beef is good. It’s best to avoid meat day to day in America.

        June 18, 2017 at 11:50 PM

      • A vegan would say that keeping layers in tiny cages is cruel and that you don’t need eggs to have a healthy diet. For all I know, it may very well be theoretically possible to get everything one needs from plants alone. In practice, however, 92% of pure vegetarians are B12 deficient. Even two in three people who followed a vegetarian diet that included milk and eggs as their only animal foods were deficient. But only 5% of those who consumed meats had vitamin B12 deficiency.

        http://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/news/20030618/vegetarian-diet-b12-deficiency

As far as I’m concerned, that’s proof that people evolved eating a diet that included meat and require it to remain healthy. And that’s probably true in more ways than just B12. I’m not saying people should eat a 32 oz steak every day. Because I don’t think humans evolved doing that, either. But I do think food scarcity meant that people evolved eating anything they could get their hands on. So I think a good rule of thumb to be healthy is to eat a variety of foods in moderation.t before.

That’s true. I don’t deliberately buy organs but if I have them I’ll eat them. For example, a whole chicken usually comes with giblets. I always eat the organs of animals I process myself.

“But I don’t understand how anyone can feel bad about eating fish, and I have no idea how anyone can think clams or oysters are somehow more “feeling” than plants are.”

I believe scientists have determined the nervous systems of shellfish are too simple to process pain. And even fish lack the nerve fiber density and neocortex to transmit or even be conscious of pain. They react to stimuli but it’s not pain.

      • “The widely available meat in America is utter crap.”

That’s a good reason to hunt. Alternately, one can buy a cow or pig from a small farmer and have it processed. Obviously, most families can’t eat 400+ pounds of beef in a year. But if you have friends or relatives you can “cow pool” by splitting into halves or quarters.

Or you could save a couple hundred dollars in processing fees on top of the money you save buying whole. Processing a cow is a big job that can easily take all day and be overwhelming if you’ve never done it before. Start with something smaller and work your way up. Start by buying whole chickens and cut them yourself. Whole chickens cost half what pre-cut do anyway. Then maybe do a few deer and and half pigs. By the time you get to a cow you’ll know whether or not you want to tackle it yourself or pay a butcher.

If I hadn’t already processed so many I’d just pay someone. If I don’t have time I still do. But it really annoys me to get back a different animal. It’s rare but it happens.

But I don’t think anybody has come up with much argument that fish isn’t good for you, perhaps even the best animal based foods we can choose with its good protein and healthy fats.

      • @Thin-Skinned Masta-Beta

Anyone who’s read my comments about food over the last few years knows my primary concern is eating a healthy diet. I’m certainly not a “paleo-diet ideologue meat-fetishist”. Everyone here knows that, if anything, I’m an advocate of the mediterranean diet.

I believe that’s the diet closest to the one our ancestors evolved eating. And it happens to be the diet producing the healthiest outcomes. The mediterranean diet actually recommends limiting red meat to once or twice per week and opting for more poultry, fish and seafood, instead.

I have no objections to that. Only I’d recommend caution when eating fish and seafood. A lot of fish is heavy in toxins like mercury. That’s why I limit my fish to sardines and herring — they’re the healthiest fish with the lowest mercury.

But I still eat meat because it’s a necessary part of a healthy diet. And because I eat meat I hunt. Similarly, because I eat vegetables I have a raised bed garden. Not because they’re “macho” or “dangerous” but because they’re both healthy, practical activities that I enjoy. The last thing I want them to be is “dangerous”. But I’ll tell you what is dangerous — a diet without any red meat.

Lots of milk protein, fat and carbs. Tastes a lot better than milk as well.

    • Because ice cream has more sugar, a lot more sugar, and more milkfat than just regular milk, and is also more expensive.

So? Sugar and fat aren’t all bad when mixed with protein.

Point is it’s MORE nutritious to eat ice cream than merely milk.

And that at an eariler age combined with exercise should help spur growth more than milk alone.

And how poor are people that they can’t aford a few more bucks for ice cream?

Where do you live, NYC? Most Americans are puffy from a lack of exercise and a walking culture.

      • You gotta live an active lifestyle and you can eat pretty much what you want. This is very simple. A couch potato talking about milk vs. ice cream vs. whatever is missing the point. Gotta burn them calories. You basically gotta know how many calories you consume in a day, or you gonna be fat.

I live in the small town, rural Western US.

My point was that if you want to spur growth in young kids to get them to grow taller and you don’t have a dairy allergy issue then ice cream is a good food source.

The sugar gives the kids energy to burn and the protein and fat contributes to building the body.

I’m not recommending it to sedentary adults.

  16. It’s not the dairy or the prenatal care that makes the Dutch taller than average. Though, I’m sure that doesn’t hurt height, either.

It’s been natural selection. Tall men, on average, have had more children for a very long time in the NL. Now, why that is the case is uncertain, but it’s clearly bigger than the Netherlands. Belgians, North Germans and other Nordics are taller, too.

PS The Dutch are the tallest nation, the tallest people are the Dinka.

    • They should to the same study for BMI to find out if natural selection is causing the so-called “obesity epidemic.”

  17. Forget prole vs SWPL. Just look at the height difference between those born in 1990 to 2000 or so. It’s the difference between eating a low fat, grain heavy food pyramid diet and eating paleo. There’s at least a 2 inch height difference between those cohorts, probably closer to 3 inches.

I have no idea why there can’t be lawsuits over the low fat fraud (or trans fats) in the way tobacco companies were sued, though in fairness it should have been a lot more obvious huffing up smoke is unhealthy. Actually, I can guess that it’s because smokers simply have a bad image, people are superficial, and well hidden long term damage always gets ignored for generations. Like lead in the gasoline.

I suspect a major cause of postmodern, postscience madness (transsexuals, gay blood donations, etc) comes from people who trust in science being culled by frauds like low fat diets. Science is relatively modern and it doesn’t take much to force it underground again. Ignoring science and simply consuming what tastes good happened to work out really well. How shocking.

  18. Drinking milk as a kid probably does contribute to bone growth, but the real determinant for height is genes.

I’m 6-0, my grandfather was 6-2, my father 6-0, my brother 6-1, his 14 y/o son is 6-2 and growing.

  19. For breakfast each day, I eat a large portion of oatmeal made w/ whole milk, mixed w/ two tablespoons of peanut butter, two tablespoons of protein powder, a handful of nuts & raisins, and a cut up banana. It’s delicious and filling, but it’s got to be close to 1000 calories, and still no weight gain.

Every night before bed and frequently for a snack, I cut up a large banana and eat it w/ two large tablespoons of peanut butter. Peanut butter has relatively high fat, high protein, low cholesterol, and low sugar. I think it’s a very healthy, and underrated, foodstuff.

    • While reading your post at McD’s (I only get coffee), I was staring at a luscious 21 year old girl who looks like some kind of mixed-race Bo Derek circa 1980. Then her mother comes in. Fat, disheveled, huge bags under the eyes, stringy hair. Oh well, some guy will get a good 15-18 years.

      • I’m visiting Miami Beach this week. Many, many attractive, exotic, Latin and mixed-race women, though I suspect that they won’t look so good after mid 30s. Fewer and fewer all-American beauties every year. Many, many NAMs off the beach but they find their way here on the weekends.

  20. I’ve read studies, funded by Seventh Day Adventists – who are advised to be vegetarian, where vegetarian children were taller.

“Age-adjusted regression analysis showed that on average Adventist vegetarian children were taller than their meat-consuming classmates (2.5 and 2.0 cm for boys and girls, respectively). These results did not change materially when adjusting for other food groups.”

These vegetarian children would be allowed to drink milk, but the last line implies that controlling for milk didn’t make a material difference.

I’ve also read studies where vegans were smaller than other children. The real interesting point would be the final height of vegetarian/vegan/omnivore children from the same population. In a large study that replicates.

Nearly all diets get enough protein according to the RDA. It’s part of weightlifting lore to eat high protein via – meat/milk/eggs. It could be other factors like IGF-1, as mentioned earlier, that make people grow with high intakes of these foods.
