Pretty good National Review article by Victor Davis Hanson about the absurdity of Democrats suddenly hating Russia.

Every Democrat should read it, but they probably won’t.

  1. Has anyone else noticed that “Russia” is slowly replacing the Soviet Union as the name of our Cold War enemy? Until recently, when talking about the pre-1991 country radio/TV commentators almost always used the Soviet Union or USSR. And why wouldn’t they? Growing up I was taught that our enemy was the system and ideology, not the Russian people, and furthermore the USSR was a conglomerate of many countries, not just Russia, so it was inaccurate to call it anything else.

But there’s been a huge rhetorical shift within the last couple of years. NPR is especially guilty of this.

    • Great observation. I had noticed this as well but sort of halfway thought it was just my imagination. It’s creepy.

    • Yes, I noticed this. I’m not sure I have a problem with it per se – I suppose you’ve got to remember that to people of my age (mid-30s) and younger, “Soviet Union” is a meaningless, unknown term.

  2. Why we now hate Russia.

    * Globo-homo crowd butthurt that Russia doesn’t cave to gay agenda and is a pro-Christian nation

    * Billionaire oligarchs shown the door by Putin are putting money into anti-Putin propaganda and politicians

    * Military-industrial complex wants to keep the forever war going (Trump should stop this but seems to have been hijacked by the MIC).

    * Russia not kowtowing to multi-cult globalism and represents white nationalism, at least a little

    • point by point: (1) Russian Orthodoxy is a Magian, not a Faustian, religion — it’s not your Christianity. (2) Putin is a billionaire gangster. (3) Russia’s forever been at war with the West; anyway, war is a permanent fact of human existence, and giving Russia everything it wants will not reduce defense-spending. (4) Russia has a huge and ever-growing Muslim population, and its “whiteness” is not the whiteness of the West.

And? Is that supposed to refute my point? Confused.

“(2) Putin is a billionaire gangster.”

So? Bill Clinton is a multi-millionaire gangster.

“(3) Russia’s forever been at war with the West; anyway, war is a permanent fact of human existence, and giving Russia everything it wants will not reduce defense-spending.”

And we’ve always been at war with Eurasia. This is total nonsense.

“(4) Russia has a huge and ever-growing Muslim population, and its “whiteness” is not the whiteness of the West.”

Yeah, but its whiteness is the best we’ve got right now. At least they aren’t openly pushing anti-white ideology.

      • Billionaire oligarchs shown the door by Putin are putting money into anti-Putin propaganda and politicians

Billionaire oligarchs are allied with Putin.

Military-industrial complex wants to keep the forever war going

The military industrial complex is an essential feature of Conservatism. The altright can either get on board with the warfare state, its vast electoral constituency, and it’s nearly trillion dollar lobbying gravy train or remain irrelevant trolls on twitter.

Russia not kowtowing to multi-cult globalism and represents white nationalism, at least a little

Russia represents Russian nationalism, not white nationalism.

Moreover their politics doesn’t translate to Western politics – the French voted 2-1 against Le Pen and the British almost committed sepuku in their last general election.

  3. The point missed here is Russia tried to influence and undermine the 2016 US election by planting fake stories about the Democratic presidential candidate all over social media and hacking and releasing emails to embarrass Democrats. Russia attacked the Democratic party.

Why are Republicans so dumb that they can write vacuous articles like this pretending not to understand that.

the purpose of the russia stuff is to distract voters from how corrupt the dem party is. the corporate dems know they have nothing to offer…except identity politics, gag.

this is another problem with a multiracial society. one party can pretend to be for the little guy but really be for the rich. it can do this by getting the votes of stupid minorities.

      • This assertion is largely attributed to John Brennan. Clapper and Comey just went along to go along. Rogers (the one with some integrity?) had his doubts.

So is John Brennan a trustworthy, non-partisan source? No, seriously, stop laughing.

Fake stories about Hillary? If you say so. Could you maybe point to ONE of these fake stories? And explain how that caused her to lose? No? And what about the fake stories about Trump? The famous dossier? No connection to Russia there, right?

Releasing emails to embarrass Democrats? SOMEONE sure did. We don’t know who because the Dems gave the straight-arm to the FBI (who knew you could do that, right?). Wikileaks says not Russia. So someone, perhaps Russia, allowed the world to see the TRUTH about Hillary and the Democrats. And that someone (perhaps the Russians) are bad for telling us the TRUTH exactly why again?

Lets be frank. The “fake stories” thing is just a throw in. It’s the Wikileaks emails that are the meat here. And we REALLY have only the Brennan assurance that it was Russia. To me, such assertions coming from a Democratic shill are, shall we say, questionable.

LOL!!! And our OWN media tried to influence and undermine Trump by planting fake stories all over social media. To say nothing of ignoring endless stories about Clinton.

“and hacking and releasing emails to embarrass Democrats.”

Zero evidence that Russia hacked the emails. It was an inside job, and very possibly those Pakis. In any case, isn’t it the CONTENTS of those emails that matter? They wouldn’t be “embarrassing” if the Dems hadn’t been doing “embarrassing” things. I’m sure you’re shedding tears every time something leaks about Trump.

      • Trump dieharhds exist in a media bubble that fills their heads with mis-information so even when they are presented with verifiable facts, they reject it as “fake news”.

The Seth Rich story as the source of the DNC leaks has been revealed as fake news created by a Republican activist and a Fox News reporter. Even the private investigator who was suppose to be the source of the story has now sued Fox News for making up quotes and says it is a a fake story.

Now you want to try to blame it on some Pakistani IT who worked for Congress? Total BS without some evidence.

The most “embarrassing” thing in the emails is that a lot of employees at the DNC preferred Clinton over Sanders. Duh … Clinton is a lifetime member of the Democrat Party while Bernie Sanders has never been a member of the Democratic Party. Even after running for the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination and attending the convention, Sanders is still not a member of the Democratic Party. Why would anyone be surprised that DNC staffers favored Clinton.

All of the heads of intelligence agree that Russia was behind the hacks.

Russia is conducting a covert operation to destabilize the Western democracies in order to raise Russia’s position in the world. They initially figured that Clinton would win, so they wanted to do everything they could to weaken her and make it more difficult for her to be effective as president. When Trump actually won, they were excited. It is clear they were hoping Trump would end sanctions on Russia. Russian enthusiasm for Trump ended the day after Mike Flynn was fired. Clearly Flynn was the man they expected to create a pro-Russia foreign policy in the Trump administration.

Whether any of the Russian social mediate efforts were in some way co-ordinated with the Trump campaign is an open question. Many US observers were surprised at how effective the Russian twitter and FB bots were in targeting trump voters is key districts. People suspect that the Russians got data on key district’s and voters from the Trump campaign. It is possible some low level person slipped the info to them. It is also possible that Russian hackers stole the information from the Trump campaign or the RNC by hacking their computers.

Whatever happened needs to be investigated. Next time Russia may not be on Trump’s side. In fact it is possible that the so called Steel dossier contains a mixture of true information and stories made up by Russian intelligence. They might have made the stories up to discredit the true information in the dossier or to embarrass Trump.

Right now Russia is trying to start a second civil war in the USA if Trump is forced from office. Hundreds of Russian twitter bots are now using the #CivilWar hash tag. The was certainly started by hard core Trump supporters in the USA, but there are 500+ Russian twitter bots now trying to amplify this idea.

Any kind of civil unrest in the USA would be a big plus for Russia and would work towards the Russians mission of making America unimportant again.

      • “All of the heads of intelligence agree that Russia was behind the hacks.”

You become the head of an agency by being a politician (in the sense of playing office politics) and not by knowing the details and certainly not by always telling the truth about everything. I’m not impressed. The evidence is too “classified” to be released. The little that was publicly released was something like “Russia Today is pro-trump, RT is controlled by the Russian government, there was a hack, therefore the Russian government did it.”

Really, the naiveté of these bobbleheads is simply stunning. They have no idea how these agencies work.

Brennan says “Russian hacked, blah, blah, blah”
        Clapper says “quack”
        Comey says “quack”
Rogers “I’m not so sure given what you showed me, but if everyone else is sure then I guess you can’t buck city hall, so semi-quack”

        Grow up.

    • No, you are missing the point. Assuming for the sake of argument that all of your accusations against Russia are true, the problem here is one of selective outrage.

If the Leftist Red Scare were based on principles, there would be a lot of other objections and condemnations coming from the Left. Which there aren’t. So the true source of outrage from the Left is not Russian attempts to interfere with the election, but the fact that the Left felt entitled to a different election outcome. Emotionally, they feel that something has been stolen from them so it’s natural to search for the thief.

      “releasing emails to embarrass Democrats”

Probably part of the motivation is to deflect attention from the “embarrassing emails.”

  4. https://pragmaticallydistributed.wordpress.com/2017/08/08/joseph-stalin-puts-anti-trump-on-show-trial/

For a systems perspective on the Russia “investigation” we turn to Stalin.

And by “Russia investigation” I do not mean its surface justification but its actual purpose to serve as a political show trial.

If it’s a show trial we’re discussing, Uncle Joe is the ideal subject matter expert to call on.

How would Stalin judge of this kangaroo court as a kangaroo court and nothing else.

Complaints of Russian collusion, especially, I imagine he’d enjoy a hearty laugh to go with his evening pipe. They’re worried Trump and Putin colluded to release John Podesta’s emails about holding naked “pizza parties” with young boys?!

Amateurs!’, Joe would say between puffs. Comrade Franklin gave me the recipe for the fucking bomb – and don’t doubt for a moment Roosevelt didn’t approve with full awareness all the espionage, nuclear related and otherwise. Hitler apparently never signed a document approving the Holocaust either; rarely did his signature touch forms approving assignments for Einsatzgruppen. But the reasons we know Hitler is as guilty of ordering both (despite a lack of official documentary evidence) are the same reasons any objective analyst must conclude FDR greenlighted Communist espionage between Franklin’s henchmen and Stalin’s Kremlin.

The two relevant groups in this circus to study are #NeverTrump Republicans and inner party Progressives.

The reaction of #NeverTrump to Priebus’ firing perfectly captures the hopelessly delusional state of these pundits. When he was fired, #NeverTrump righteously, without any shame or self-awareness, condemned Priebus for the sin of not allowing them a floor challenge to Trump’s nomination.

What they mean, in plain Georgian, is that Priebus is guilty of not helping #NeverTrump steal the convention vote when Trump held a clear majority of delegates. This theft, btw, would never have been considered if an establishment Republican held the slimmest of delegate leads over Trump.

Now, Stalin would be the last person in history to begrudge entitled, corrupt elites (even if elite-only-in-their-own-minds) like #NeverTrump from stealing an election. But our mustached schoolmaster would ask #NeverTrumper students whether they were prepared to steal the nomination?

The mighty Soviet of Soviets would shake his head at his pupils.

Did Stalin not famously preach (and, oh, what practice came with his preaching!) the votes matter not, but who counts the votes? And did #NeverTrump take heed of Stalin’s gospel by having Priebus rig the delegate count as Hillary did with her superdelegates?

    No.

For this negligence Stalin would not have forgiven #NeverTrump. Afterall, these counts do have to be arranged well in advance – not even Stalin dared to risk a Soviet vote tally be announced that had him with a minority share.

Yet, without doing the necessary vote-rigging legwork nor taking a moment off drooling on Twitter, infantile #NeverTrumpers expected they were entitled at the convention to be more Stalinistic than Stalin by having Priebus simply veto Trump’s delegate majority in broad daylight.

No Siberian gulag is harsh enough punishment for #NeverTrump’s pig ignorance.

For these reasons and many more, Stalin would disregard #NeverTrump as serving as anything but a powerless spectator in the kangaroo court proceedings.

Then he would turn to the Progressives.

Unlike the utterly hapless #NeverTrump wing of the GOP, the Progressives are still formidable.

Yet, the Presidency is a powerful locus of power for Trump to be operating from – Pardon power, ability to wage war.

American Intelligence agencies? No reason Stalin would have faith in modern “spooks” if they are incompetent at gathering intelligence about actual

  6. That is a truly stupid article, sorry. The “progressives” are not driving the anti-Russian stories. For the most part progressives seem to agree with the far Right that Russian hacking stories are to deflect attention from Hillary’s horrible campaign. Progressives are pro-Bernie and hate Hilary. Russian hacking stories mostly come from the intelligence services and the military, who are either a) patriots trying to protect us from a truly corrupt and treasonous President [what most moderate Americans think] or b) deep-state operatives trying to undermine a popularly elected President who is trying to reign in a corrupt and unelected bureaucracy [what most conservatives and far left progressives think]. Victor Hanson is tilting at windmills.

  7. For central Europeans (certainly Germans and Poles) it was always “The Russians”. But it was not simply a hostile relationship. Prussia and Russia were allies against Napoleon and throughout most of the 19th century there was often felt a certain common ground between the large continental Empires (Austria, Prussia/Germany and Russia, despite the first being Catholic, the second mostly Protestant and the last Orthodox and many other differences) and important differences to the French and especially the British with their sea-based Empire (both of the latter were also considerably more advanced technologically until Germany caught up at the end of the century). This “natural” alliance was of course broken in the first WW and afterwards it was worse with the Soviet Unio combining the “Asian hordes” with the bolshevik villains and several more stereotypes.
Then we had more than 4 decades of cold war, and most people in some kind of powerful position today grew up in that time.
For obvious reasons, there is still a lot of fear in the former Eastern bloc states. For similarly obvious reasons Russia is an important trade partner for both these countries as well as Germany and other European countries. So many people want at least decent functional relations with Russia, not another cold war.
