Asian fraternities

First, a pledge is blindfolded and separated from his assigned ‘‘Big,’’ an older fraternity brother, by a line of brothers whose arms are linked together. For the most part, this line signifies the barrier between glumly accepting America’s vision of emasculated, toadying Asian men and the great promise of success and masculine fulfillment.

Interesting NY Times Magazine article about Asian fraternities, the Chinese-American immigrant experience, and a specific murder prosecution for a death at an Asian fraternity hazing ritual.

* * *

It’s a real shame about the closing of Mount Airy Lodge in 2001, which provided a Catskills-like experience for gentiles. I guess it didn’t survive for the same reason that the Catskills resorts didn’t survive.

      • That the statues (and temples) were painted in bright colors was well known when I was in high school in the late 1980s. It is absolutely ridiculous to present this as new if I learned it as a teenager (albeit on a school with some focus on Classics) almost 30 years ago. Same goes for the “multi-ethnic” character of the Roman Empire.
Still, by their facial features we can see that the Greeks and Romans were clearly “Caucasian”. Because there was quite a bit of oriental admixture in the 2 millenia since then there were probably also more blonde/ginger/pale people in the ancient mediterranean. OTOH there were also more “Germanic” genetic influxes in late antiquity

  4. I wonder if those Asian fraternities admit kumars into their midst.. The university I went to had lots of Indians and lots of Asians, mostly Chinese. The Indians had their own “Indian” student organization and the orientals their “Asian and Pacific Islander” organization. However, some of the kumars, invariably male, double dipped and signed up for the Asian group in addition to the Indian one where they logically belonged.

Now technically Indians are grouped in the “Asian” category for US government statistical purposes but in the real world, everyone can see (and oftentimes smell!) at a second’s glance that Indians and Asians are two completely distinct peoples, as different from each other as either group is from whites.. The kumars who signed up for the APAC group invariably did so as a way to try and get access to Asian girls. If a white guy tried something similar I’d imagine he’d be made to feel very unwelcome by the male Asians, but the Indians were allowed in. I’m not sure whether the Asians felt they had to grin and bear it on a technicality or were simply brainwashed enough to consider the kumars their “fellow Asians,” but there it was.

I wonder if these Asian frats operate under a similar dynamic.

White is not a race. It is a subrace of Caucasian, as are Middle Eastern and South Asian. Ashkenazi Jews are simply an intermediate group between White and Middle Eastern. Gypsies are an intermediate group between White and South Asian.

  5. Not far from Mount Airy are the decaying remains of the former Penn Hills Resort, which in its heyday offered the traditional Poconos heart-shaped-tub-and-mirrored-ceiling experience. We pass by it on our (usually) semiannual visits to Callie’s Candy Kitchen and Pretzel Factory just up the road; at each visit we buy enough candy and pretzels to last six months until the next visit, and of course they get devoured within a couple weeks. In any event, in the last several years the Penn Hills remains have gotten more and more deteriorated, to the point that the structures probably are beyond any hope of renovation and would have to be demolished. As I understand it, the property is tied up in a never-ending estate dispute.

    • Sometime around ’04-’06 I parked my car in front of an Asian frat in Berkeley. It’s probably the smallest frat house on campus, obviously mostly live-outs. Anyway, I left about 18 inches between my bumper and their driveway. A Little Chinese guy came out and started making a hysterical scene about hiw I was blocking their driveway. I said to him, “Cone on, open your eyes.” And he goes, “Of great! A racial slur!” Swear to God, 100% true.

When I worked in a Park Slope copy-shop a long time ago a black hippie used to come in to make copies of a flyer for his juice-business; I remember him saying, “I don’t eat meat — I don’t even eat my woman.”

    • My thought when reading the article was “If you feel the need to be in a fraternity, what’s the point of being Asian?” Like, why bother being gay if you don’t know the lyrics to “Surrey with the Fringe on Top.” There was a lot of baggage being flung about in that article, but it’s basically introverted guys teaching themselves to be psychopaths.

It would be better if an extroverted Asian guy who wants to start networking in college and date drunk girls should probably try for whatever the Skull and Bones equivalent is at his college, and do his best to shed whatever historical baggage his family came with.

I couldn’t take the article seriously after he mentioned a hazing ritual around the Bataan Death March. I guess they don’t know who was behind that, or if the frat is mainly Korean and Chinese guys, maybe Japanese guys are excluded or would think that frat is deeply uncool. I was relieved not to see a Philippine guy mentioned among the fraternity members.

Asians seem to be good at lower-body-based lifts, including Olympic lifts, but not so much at upper-body lifts such as bench-pressing, which I don’t quite understand because one would think that their short arms would give them an advantage at pressing, just as Whites have an advantage over Blacks because of a greater proportion of torso-size to limb-length.

  13. This piece is more about the Asian experience in America than it is about the frat guys on trial, who are mainly props in the author’s tale of woe. His bitterness is really something to behold. And he’s not alone- check out the responses he got when he posted it on Twitter. Tons of people, mostly Asians, are saying it’s the most profound thing ever, it moved them to tears, etc. I don’t know what portion of the U.S. Asian population holds Kang’s views, but clearly he’s not alone.

He recounts evil deeds that America has done to Asians at various times, but these don’t seem to done lasting damage if the demographic data are to be believed. Asians outperform whites on a variety of social indicators. Upon entering the U.S., Kang himself rose immediately into elite academic institutions and prestigious media gigs. The sense I get, from various comments he makes throughout the piece, is that he just feels fundamentally alienated from American society. He’s more bitter about that than about any specific discrimination he can identify.

And if that’s the case, my question for Kang and his Twitter friends is: What the hell do you actually want us to do? You’ve been admitted here by the millions, you have access to education and careers, you can get citizenship and participate in the political process. This isn’t the Jim Crow South we’re talking about here.

If his bitterness comes from a sense that he can never really fit in to the white majority culture, then it follows that he considers the majority an ipso facto problem, and is going to keep bitching until it’s gone.

    August 9, 2017 at 10:59 pm

    • Why shouldn’t he be bitter? He didn’t choose to move the United States, his parents made that decision for him. And now he grows up where Asian men are considered nerdy losers. Asian women are abandoning Asian men for white guys.

If you can’t find one single asian to marry you then that’s more of like your problem than the asian women. If you are having trouble in marrying an asian american, find one among a billion back in Asia. They might have a better shot at marrying someone from back home. Point being complaining is for losers.

  18. Surprised how much these Asian frats hate Whites. I mean seriously, Asians are pretty smart people, I thought they would have realized that they essentially piggy-back off of stable white societies and use their high IQ’s to prosper in them. Rather than living in some crappy place such as China, they want to come here. They don’t realize the reason why the USA is stable and functions well as a society is because it is (Or WAS) primarily made up of a group of people with high empathy, and decent IQ. The more immigrants that live in the USA the less the USA will function as a society and it will begin to look like one of the places they ran from.

If I were a minority I would honestly want less minorities to come to this country, all while grandfathering myself into it so my future offspring can prosper.

  21. I think the author of this article is more bitter than the average Asian. Still, one thing I wanted to point out as a source of bitterness for Asian men is that they’re on the bottom of the totem pole in terms of sexual desirability. This is especially pronounced in the gay world. I’m gay and half Indian (look kinda weird and Indian) and I have a brutal time getting dates. I’m grateful enough to live in America that I know not to get angry at whites, but it can be very frustrating because the average white guy is very cute to me but basically won’t give me the time of day (it doesn’t help that gay guys are pretty rude if they’re not attracted to you).

Thus, I think we are going to see more examples of Asian men who are moderately economically successful but bitter because they are nearly shut out of the market for even averagely attractive mates. Hopefully, because of the relatively high IQ of the Asian males here, we can figure out a fun way to cope as a sort of secular monk. But yeah too much immigration is creating a situation where people are relatively successful but still isolated. It’s making our society needlessly brittle. Immigration should focus on bringing people where we need more labor, like doctors.
