It’s the HBD, stupid

with 153 comments

A Politico article ponders how North Korea, a poor third-world country, managed to build a nuclear arsenal. It’s such a mystery.

A program that was once derided as a “joke” is anything but funny anymore. In addition to raising a host of strategic problems for the United States, Kim Jong Un has demolished our assumptions about how nuclear weapons spread, and raises a first-order question of significant global importance: How did a nation President Nixon once derided as a “fourth rate” “pipsqueak” acquire nuclear weapons against the will of the world? How did Pyongyang manage to defy the experts?

I already explained it. The genetically high IQ of Koreans means that North Korea can produce nuclear weapons (which is only a 1950s technology), while countries in Africa are never going to do that. It’s the HBD, stupid.

  1. It’ll be a fascinating HBD experiment when and if the NK regime falls. Asians have done extremely well in modernity. Liberals and conservatives believe that groups who’ve suffered oppression and been taught wrong or crazy values will pass those things on for generations. If the Kim regime falls and then NK becomes indistinguishable from other East Asian countries in a generation or two, it would be a big win for HBD and against cultural explanations for things.

This experiment was sort of run in China, where Mao killed millions and enslaved the whole country and as soon as the govt introduced capitalism decades later the Chinese took to it amazingly well. NK, being more isolated and having a repressive cult-like government for longer, will be a tougher test case for strong genetic theories of group achievement.

    • When the regime falls, North Korea will remain poorer than South Korea for years, if not forever. It will be richer than it is now, but:

      1) China doesn’t want a unified Korean peninsula.

      2) South Korea is ambivalent about reunification.

      3) North Koreans have suffered decades of poor nutrition and there may have been dysgenic effects, with smarter/more ambitious Norks defecting escaping.

The best case scenario might be it becomes a Chinese puppet state where South Korean companies set up shop for cheap labor.

      • Not many North Koreans have been able to escape. According to Wikipedia, “Since 1953, 100,000–300,000 North Koreans have defected, most of whom have fled to Russia or China.”

I’d bet South Korea has lost more smart people to the United States than NK has in total. There’s something like a million Korean-Americans.

      • The only reason SA hasn’t turned into Zimbabwe (yet) is that Zimbabwe had a head start. With every action that’s been taken by it’s government, SA is very much in the same trajectory as Zimbabwe. American and European governments had a vested interested in insuring that SA’s civil-society wouldn’t crumble too readily and so they spiked its 1990s constitution with safe-guards to ensure it stayed on track. They didn’t count on the fact that it would eventually start to “Africanize” it’s democracy.

      • ZImbabwe fell to black rule only 14 years or so before SA. SA right now is still a far more civilized place than Zimbabwe 14 years ago.

There are more factors than time and the constitution separating the countries. There was more lip service paid to reconciliation in SA (ubuntu). SA has a much larger white population (especially if you give partial credit to mullatos), with much deeper roots. Ethnic cleansing SA’s whites would be a far more daunting task than in Zimbabwe for this reason.

Escalation of ethnic conflict is surely destined for SA’s future, but it’s hard to say how it pans out — other than bad for everyone.

  6. IIRC, the North Koreans were also trained in nuclear engineering by the Soviets. And making nukes is part of their business model.

Do you think that with similar training and desire Nigeria couldn’t have nuclear weapons? You don’t think that, out of 180 million Nigerians, there’d be enough people with the chops to learn nuclear engineering? A quick Bing search shows Nigeria graduated its first half-dozen nuclear engineers in 2014: http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/155870-uniport-produces-nigerias-first-set-of-nuclear-engineers.html

They’re probably not interested in building nukes — probably more risk than it’s worth — but, presumably, in generating energy, so they can export more oil.

    Dave Pinsen

    • “Do you think that with similar training and desire Nigeria couldn’t have nuclear weapons?”

Yes. It’s probably true that in a country of over 100 million people, there are a few guys who are smart enough to engineer an atomic bomb. But Nigeria’s culture is so corrupt and dysfunctional it would be impossible as a practical matter to identify, assemble, organize, and fund these guys as was done with the Manhattan Project.

It’s the same reason these African countries inevitably hire Western engineering and construction firms to build their airports, power plants, and other complex infrastructure.

      September 1, 2017 at 3:50 am

      • This is correct. I think Griffe du Lion originated the phrase “smart fraction”, but it seems to bear out that institutions will work far better in a society of 10 million smart people than a society of 10 million smart and 90 million dumb.

Doubly so once you factor in the lower trust in the mixed society.

I think the book “Hive Mind” from the last few years also supported this thesis.

In addition to all that, we would predict NK to have more individuals at certain IQs on the far right tail than Nigeria. Depending on how important people at extremely high IQ levels are for these sorts of projects (e.g., Is it better to have 1 person with 150 IQ or 10 with 140?), NK might have more useful manpower than Nigeria.

        Wency

        September 1, 2017 at 3:11 pm

      • what y’all don’t get is that making an a-bomb is not hard at all. critical mass of u-235 or pu placed at center of spherical bomb = chain reaction. it’s that easy. the hard part is separating the u-235 or making the pu. it’s following a recipe. paraguay could do it if it had the uranium and the machine tools.

    • Unfortunately for that sentiment, the Bell curve, in addition to the maximum potential of developmental nurture in Nigeria, is as likely to grace 180 million Nigerians with truly qualified nuclear engineers as it is 180 million silverback gorillas. Absent a genetic gift from outside groups.

That’s the beauty of statistics. It doesn’t grant outliers beyond certain potential. The standard deviations are what they are for each group, and no more.

Even if they could produce enough engineers, by biology or gift, I’d venture that their support staff would lack too greatly in ability to maintain a successful operation.

Ie will importing more people into Germany simply give German companies more customers (more utility bills, more bank accounts, more grocery shopping, etc.) The fact that they mainly have an IQ of 85 means they will be a burden on the state, but will they be a boon to the private sector? So what, the world isn’t fair? Rich people create monopolies for themselves, relying on institutional inertia, human laziness, and the enactment of legal barriers? That’s life. People get by on their looks, their ability to look busy, and kissing ass. So what? That’s life too.

      • Libertarianism, like communism, is politically impossible due to the political nature of man that will always demand that individuals ethnically group together for political protection against being murdered by other political groups (who will always exist due to the incentives that group power provides). If that logic is not enough of a refutation, then you also have the fact that, like communism, there has never and will never be a truly libertarian society. Because there is a strong political incentive against it. Because of the aforementioned political dynamic that centers around not wanting to be murdered (enslaved, etc).

Like communism, libertarianism is a utopian thought experiment. End of story. It’s also no coincendance that communism and libertarianism both try to ‘free the individual’ against ethnic political bonds. Sociopolitically speaking, they are largely the same in their core effect. The former is just a little more professedly murderous to that end.

Much of Soviet technology actually came from the US and NATO:

        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antony_C._Sutton

“In a few words: there is no such thing as Soviet technology. Almost all — perhaps 90–95 percent — came directly or indirectly from the United States and its allies. In effect the United States and the NATO countries have built the Soviet Union. Its industrial and its military capabilities. This massive construction job has taken 50 years. Since the Revolution in 1917. It has been carried out through trade and the sale of plants, equipment and technical assistance.[4]”

Despite utter chaos, Russia, even in the worst of the Yeltsin era, was still a safe and orderly place compared to any African country. Trains kept running, public transport worked, there weren’t power outages – at least not in major cities like Nizhny Novgorod where I was living. Government workers were very corrupt but still mostly did their jobs – gathered statistics, enforced regulations, responded to citizens, etc. Crime was bad compared to the USSR, but mostly nothing an urban American hasn’t seen. People for the most part tried to work and figure out how to best deal with the new situation. They didn’t form roving bands of militias or start raping women at random. The Baltic countries, with higher IQ populations, did even better. Lower IQ regions like Turkmenistan or Tajikistan reverted to almost feudal conditions, and are arguably far worse off today than they were as part of the USSR:

If you’d been following the blog closely you’d have noticed several discussions about early retirement. Such discussions tend to come from folks with assets in addition to their homes in excess of $1.5 million or more.

The one person who really talks about how succesful he is is mikeca who is always disagreeing with the bulk of the commentors. And then yakov has this schizophrenic thing where he brags about how much money he makes but then says he can’t pay taxes because he’s on the brink of financial ruin.

As Lion himself says successful people don’t adopt the kinds of positions he does because successful people think that their success validates the world and its ruling orthodoxies and everyone here except mikeca bucks elite opinion in one major way or another.

Maybe, but I attended at one time a 50% black school in the Memphis ghetto and twice lived in black underclass neighborhoods in one instance being the only white on my street. I also got to live as a minority among Asians. I noticed the relative gaps in intelligence long before learning squat about HBD. I’ll also note there remains no credible competing theory to HBD that has any body of evidence that has advanced past the conceptual hypothesis stage. Maybe you can get in it and come up with a general theory of equality to back up your internet posts?

How can you so stupid as to imagine the word ‘nurture’ or even ‘environment’ constitutes a general theory? You don’t understand what a general theory is, do you? Here’s a hint, Darwin had a general theory. So did Mendel. Egalitarians, they have philosophies. You’re an egalitarian meaning a philosopher. A completely different creature from an empiricist.

If you believe that equality should be true as a material reality you need to develop a theory explaining how material processes creating population equalities might work. And while you’re doing this remember that the natural sciences don’t recognize racism or other platonic forms as possessing material form.

If you are so certain that general theory of developmental equality or in the alternative the general theory of environmental causation for IQ differentiation between historically separated populations exist please cite to it. I’ll even give you a hand, the last person to develop anything remotely like such a theory was Stephen J Gould but he was exposed as a fraud years ago.

Well, I went to a lower school in Jamaica where I was the only white, a middle school where I was one of 2 whites (out of 200+), and a high school where there might have been 2 or 3 whites in a total of around 700 students.

As a student I roamed Kingston with black friends and ventured into areas my parents would have been horrified to discover, amongst the Rastafari and the poorest of the poor. It was, fortunately, the early sixties, just before things got stirred up.

I have lived and worked in 98% black Caribbean countries for over 50 years in a service industry dealing almost exclusively with the urban black middle and lower classes, and had the misfortune to pull jury duty there, where even I was shocked by the degradation of the very lowest of the black urban underclass.

A general theory ties together, in a coherent way, a series of related reliable hypothesis that have already been replicated with tests or processes incorporating falsifiable claims and controlling for confounding variables.

One reason speciation is taken seriously is because it is a theory explaining the archeological record and it was predictive of discoveries relating to DNA and heritability.

Equality, on the other hand, operates as a concept entirely outside of biology unless I’m missing something. Given that, differentiation of any trait on an individual level or different distributions of traits on the group level is anticipated by evolutionary biology and therefore should be the null hypothesis.

Its opposite, imagining equality in individual traits or group distributions is not anticipated by any recognized scientific theory. Given that, hostility to HBD, the scientific null hypothesis should only exist among the subliterate masses and those vulnerable to social coercion. HBD is nothing more than an acronym for best available science on the question of population trait differentials.

        **
Nature vs nurture. DNA is the blueprint for how to build a person. Everything is ultimately a result of DNA. That doesn’t mean environment is irrelevant. Consider height. If a kid is sick or malnourished they’ll be stunted. But, even under ideal conditions, their height is limited by genetics.

There are exceptions such as a tumor on someone’s pituitary gland that makes them grow abnormally. Or growth hormone injections. Similarly, if a kid is sick or malnourished they might be dumb. Zika would be an extreme example. But, even under ideal conditions, IQ has limits. Perhaps, someday there will be an injection that stimulates certain parts of the brain. But that’s artificial and beyond the realm of nature vs nurture.

There are certain factors that can affect behavior as well. For example, if someone is under a lot of stress as a child their body will produce stress hormones that enlarge their amygdala and affect emotional development and behavior. Of course, how much stress affects the amygdala is a result of genetics as well.

There have also been studies on a gene that’s correlated with anger management. Apparently, if someone is stressed as a child that gene is more likely to kick in. But if they’re not it could lie dormant. There’s a documentary about it called “Born to Rage”. About 1/3 of the population has it. But most wouldn’t show symptoms unless they grew up under conditions that trigger it. And some people can control it with meditation and effort. Similarly, some people are born with a predisposition to alcoholism but don’t drink. So behavior isn’t purely genetic. There’s also environment and people can choose.

What is most impressive is that the white population of South Africa at the time was less than 5m people and under a strict international embargo. Because of the embargo they also developed one of the world’s foremost defense industries which produced, among other things, an attack helicopter that rivaled anything made by the then Soviet Union and United States. The 5m African whites have accomplished more than the entire black African population hundreds of millions strong.

No, because that might be impossible under the circumstances.

Have you ever lived under communist regime? I did, in Eastern Europe. This is what it’s like:

First, the commies exploit nationalism, mutual loyalty that way. The commies here were telling the lies to people in 1950s and 1960s that “they work for next generation of Poles”. Well, it did not work out.

Using national loyalty is a devil’s bargain for the commies: they have to do it, since the marxist narrative makes people yawn only, but once they do it, they admit a degree of realism into the debate. If by 1970s say it palpably and visibly does not work, what can you do? Demoralization seeps in.

That’s just what’s happening in NK.

Second, what if you’re a relatively small nation / have a big empire keeping you under their boot next to your borders?

Poland did revolt in 1980 – much good it did, since the full might of Soviet state crushed the uprising. And the reason we did not fight back much was because too many people were afraid that Soviet Union proper will attack us. Heck, their troops were stationing in Poland, they would not have it far to the battlefield.

Of course, SU was not willing to attack Poland – they were too exhausted and too demoralized after Afghanistan. But the memory of 1956 Hungary and 1968 Czechoslovakia was too fresh for people to forget and not many were willing to gamble.

For NK, China of course fulfills the role that SU fulfilled for us.

At the end of the day, the uprising did make sense – it was a political poison pill that destroyed last remnants of illusion that Soviet socialism has support of the nations of Eastern Europe. 10 years later Soviet system collapsed (12 years for SU proper).

Something similar is undergoing now in NK.

“used defectors based abroad to create an infiltrating resistance movement or something like that?”

And then be squashed by China? Moreover, would YOU put your life on the line “for something like that”? Collective as they are, they’re still not ants.

    • I would presume Pakistanis have long had assortative caste mating like Indians. This means both countries can have shockingly low average IQ while still having a significant 100+ population isolated from the rest that runs everything.

    • Frequent estimate of IQ minimum to do any sort of engineering work is 120. 84 + 3SD (15 IQ pts) = 129.
Per well known statistical rule, 99.7% of the population is within 3SDs. For population of 193M that means 579,000 people with IQ 129+.

Manhattan project at its peak employed 120,000 people, presumably not all of them with IQ 120+.

So Pakistan should have plenty enough for nuclear program.

  20. Why is it so hard for MikeCa and Magnavox to believe in HBD? Isn’t it just the idea that different races have different average IQs, and different personality traits?

BTW, I don’t think Africans have ever even developed a factory that produces something as simple as internal combustion engines, although I’d be interested to hear if they have.

    • It’s not just that they have different IQs but that those differences are innate. And the reason I don’t believe that its true is that history shows different populations constantly rising and falling in relation to one another which is completely inconsistent with the theory that these groups relative performances are genetically determined.

I also don’t believe that it is false. Anyone that takes a strong view on way or the other has a blinkered view of reality.

      • Have you not noticed that though local power relationships change, civilization and technology has always largely come from the Eurasian landmass and south Mediterranean?
HBD really just boils down to common sense. One needs only to remark on human breeds as we would on breeds of dogs. No one gets upset if you say a sheepdog is inherently brighter and less high-strung than a chihuahua. An observant prehistoric farmer might have understood this better than most modern people do.

      • Well in the spirit of Stephen Miller I’m going to need a list of which dog human parallels are common sense and which are absurd because its far from obvious and you sound like a fool to me.

And dogs are such an outlier in terms of the way they diversify and form breeds that choosing dogs over every other animal is of anything even more absurd than arbitrarily picking intelligence as the trait that must parralel between the species.

  21. “history shows different populations constantly rising and falling in relation to one another which is completely inconsistent with the theory that these groups relative performances are genetically determined.’

“Understanding Human History” by Michael H. Hart seems to contradict that statement.

“The correlation between IQ and wealth has yet to be proven”

But the correlation between IQ and income seems pretty solid.

    • The highest levels of wealth and development has been occuring at higher and higher latitudes throughout the history of civilization.

I May read that book but looking at the comments it looks like he just takes the present distribution of intelligence and tries to force an interpretation of history consistent with it. A more interesting book would either argue that intelligence had become more important over time compared to factors like climate or that the population groups in given locations and their genetically derived behaviors actually have undergone significant changes through history.

      Magnavox

      September 2, 2017 at 1:25 am

      • At what point was climate more important, and how do you know?

Your first “more interesting” book would merely comport to your bias against the significance of intelligence in some periods, and your second presumes knowledge of the historical development of human intelligence, or behaviors, that you don’t have.

So, you can’t expect others to make such assumptions in order to buttress your bias toward change and thus eliminating the possibility of the supreme importance of intelligence in all periods of human history.

You don’t know when high intelligence was realized nor why, and so to state that a book that shows such change would be more interesting is assuming that such a change even occurred within a period that we can observe / measure anthropologically in any significant manner. It’s all simply to buttress your bias, versus any type of legitimately “more interesting” and sincere scientific inquiry.

  22. @yakov:
In Golden Gate Park there are two beautifully maintained baseball fields, reserved for a Sunday “semi-pro” league made up of former minor leaguers and college players. On this Sunday in July our team had two new players, “Mike” (white) and Kenny Black (real name, black). Mike, 6′”1/200, was a pitcher recently cut from a Red Sox farm team, and was in the SF police academy. Kenny, 5’11″/175, was an outfielder. They didn’t know each other, one having gone to catholic schools, the other to public.

The game was about to start and players were at the benches. At the end of the bench nearest home plate was Mike. I was sitting next to him, and Kenny was standing in front of us swinging a bat. Now, down the third base line, headed for the opposing bench comes a weird sight – a little black guy, maybe 5’5″/130, who’s walking like an epileptic chicken, up on his toes taking choppy little steps with his hands splayed out to the sides. He’s locally famous because he once stole 100 bases in a minor league season.

Now Mike says, to nobody in particular, “Why is it the fastest guys always walk like they’re crippled?” The words are hardly out of his mouth when Kenny wheels around, yells “racist motherfucker!” and collapses Mike’s face with one punch, blood drenching my uniform. Mike’s face looked like a cake that failed to rise, convex. Kenny was tackled by our backup catcher, a rich Jewish kid named Weisbach. Later we found every bone in Mike’s face had been broken, and the plastic surgery was $20k.

      • “you very rarely see that type of explosive, out-of-nowhere anger with non-black guys”

I’m sure you’ve heard of the “warrior gene”. I don’t like the term because it makes it sound cool. It should be called the “violent criminal” gene. Interestingly, the gene is on the X chromosome which men get from their mother who in turn get it from their father. So people get it from their maternal grandfather and not their fathers. Popular science has an interesting article about it.
        http://www.popsci.com/can-your-genes-make-you-kill

Basically, there are 4 versions of the gene producing MAO-A. The fewer times it repeats the less active the gene, the less MAO-A it produces and the more prone to violent anger one is.

“The 3R version, which produces less MAO-A, was found in 59% of Black men, 56% of Maori men (an aboriginal New Zealand group), 54% of Chinese men and 34% of Caucasian men.

The 2R version, which produces the least MAO-A, is found in 5.5% of Black men, 0.1% of Caucasian men, and 0.00067% of Asian men.”

I suspect if you’re living in a lawless environment where tribes are slugging it out that it’s a pretty good thing to have a few axe murderers on the team. And so a certain percentage of those genes will be selected for. But if you’re living in an environment with law and order then that sort of violence will get you hanged. So it’s not surprising that europeans and asians have lower percentage.

  23. O/t but related to HBD – Immigrants that are “supposed” to displace the native proles in Upstate New York. And old NYT article that distinguishes the black and White Muslims.

It turns out that Somali Muslims from Sub Sahara Africa are nothing like the productive Bosnian Muslims, who arrive to Utica, NY from Europe, where they renovate derelict buildings, turning some of them to Mosques and opening up businesses. This isn’t an Islam problem, but a race and IQ problem. Most Islamic terrorists are not White, but people who originate from a very warm clime, with lower IQs and lower impulse control.
