Programming AI to be politically correct

PerezHBD writes in a comment:

AI is just pattern recognition and the most ambitious AI projects that have been unleashed in to the wild were all shut down because AI is so virulently racist. The only way to stop AI from being racist is to manually brick it in regards to a whole host of topics which produces a less racist AI, but also a stupider one that will be out thought by China’s non-bricked AI machines.

I don’t see why AI can’t be programmed to be politically correct. PC is just a bunch of rules, and knowing when to give an answer to humans that’s different from the truth. In fact, AI could be much better at being politically correct than humans, computers would have a much better grasp of the rules and never make any mistakes.

However, in order to create such programming, the programmers have to be aware that political correctness is a set of rules which overrides truthful observation. But I think that could be figured out in order to avoid lawsuits and bad PR.

  1. The desire to avoid lawsuits and bad PR has to be balanced against getting things right, which can net you huge profits.

OT, but did you see The Orville last night? Seemed to have a pretty anti-trans message.

    • “Seemed to have a pretty anti-trans message.”

I noticed. But it was a lot more complicated than that. For example, the alien parents were from a macho alien species that’s all male and, hence, gay. One of them turned out to be a crypto-trannie. Then the other said he didn’t care, just hurt that he kept it from him.

There was also a lot of feminism in the sense that the corrective surgery was driven by gay misogyny. Particularly interesting since feminists are currently complaining that gay men are misogynists (as if feminism isn’t about hating men). Also a lot of grrrl power in that Alara was strong and Gordon was dumb.

It also pulled a big reversal on the whole gay thing. Whereas most would see homos as unnatural and sex change surgery on an infant as barbaric they saw heterosexuals as unnatural and not using “corrective” surgery as barbaric. At the end they did the surgery and everyone accepted it.

Very complicated to work through all the angles. And not as anti-trans as what it would appear.

      • “Also a lot of grrrl power in that Alara was strong and Gordon was dumb.”

Yet as the Molcan pointed out, Alara was a completely different species and a male of her race would’ve been even stronger.

I think it shows how dumb feminists are that they argue against population differences by pointing to individual examples, and compare apples to oranges. But maybe the producers and writers thought that when leftists do that they’re actually making good points.

    • I thought the court scene was feminist.

  2. “China is going to bail out HBD” is vaporware. (people used to say this about Japan) China is pragmatic and doesn’t care about disseminating discoveries but using what it learns or copies to expand its economic and political influence for the benefit of its economically productive citizens.

September 22, 2017 at EDT pm

    • China is pragmatic, yes, and part of that pragmatism involves race realism. No one in Asia has the slightest interest in political correctness, the Chinese least of all. If the Chinese put restrictions in to the underlying AI technology they steal from us, it will deal with criticism of the Chinese government, not any of the PC nonsense that coastal elites in America dream up.

  3. The racist AIs have been chatbots using learning algorithms. When they interacted with users saying extremist things, they picked it up.

It would probably be possible to create a censoring AI by hiring human censors to censors things for a while and record data on everything that was censored and why. Then once you had a large amount of data feed it to a learning algorithm intended to copy the behavior.

  4. Correct. Programmers will come to see it as a set of rules which avoid lawsuits and bad PR. Whether or not they override truthful observation … well, who’s counting, really?

  5. No Lion, PC is, as they like to say about rape, about power. One day, the women are up, next day it is the Blacks and women are racist. Then it’s the gays and Blacks are homophobic. Then it is the Muslims and the gays who are in any way critical are Islamophobic. Round and round it goes. It is the power to decide what is the flavor of the day that SJWs want more than anything and an AI that consistently and evenhandedly applied the rules would ruin that even if they were the most PC set of rules.

    • I don’t see any round and round. Those intra democratic squabbles just get talked about as little as possible in favor of demonizing whites, men, and christians.

September 22, 2017 at EDT pm

      • They have some quandaries. The Orlando shooting was a Muslim terrorist attack for specific, Islamic motives. The shooter told us exactly why he was shooting. However it’s been interpreted by the left as a gun control issue with a little homophobia thrown in. So Muslims top gays in the current victim pyramid. It’s like rock-paper-scissors except the items keep changing.

      • No, if muslims topped gays democrats would stop supporting gay issues and if gays topped muslims then democrats would stop muslim immigration. They have done neither of those things but instead downplayed any intra democratic conflict. Making into an antigun issue is a perfect example of what I was talking about because gun owners are a republican constituency, especially the white male christian ones that anti gun people are most interested in demonizing and disarming.

  6. I work in machine learning and can give you some insights.

AI is not bound by rules. Modern day AI is taking all sorts of data and training it on an algorithm. It’s designed so that the algorithm gets insights on new data. You can’t bound the AI with rules this way. The only potential way to bound it is by reducing the data training set, which is self-defeating as the algorithm wouldn’t work anymore. Trust me, all these anti-PC results will keep cropping up because the machine is deducing generalities from the data.

  8. Lion, I think that what you are suggesting is that AI tells humans what they want to hear (lie insofar as its real “perspective” is concerned), while using a different (racist) set of rules for its actual processes.

That’s one way to go about it, but wouldn’t it get out that AI was programmed to lie about being racist?

As PerezHBD states, there is no way to give AI a set of actual incorrect rules without it being out-thought by unrestricted AI whose rules better match reality.

In fact, PerezHBD’s predictions in regard to Chinese AI seems a bit neutral for what is likely to occur. It is more likely that a future AI’s directive would be to maximize racial protection and progression for the race that creates it, which seems like a command that would be much less prone to conflicting with its ability to outperform unrestricted AI as compared to AI that is taught to see all races as equal.

  9. Que basura pelicula.

September 23, 2017 at EDT pm

  10. Yakov, it is “que pelicula basura” (with an accent on the i) or “que basura de pelicula”.
Got a question, what’s the meaning of american athletes kneeling during your national anthem ? It looks like it meant as optin out of the ceremony but I don’t understand why (not the reasons for them to do that, I understood it’s racism and LBM stuff) but where this symbol comes from. Because in France, when you kneel, it would mean you’re even more involved in the act. It is extremely derefent. The ancient catholic mass – I attented because of my traditionalists parents – you were almost all the time kneeling of both knees btw (FYI, you get used to that, and peope who are trained to kneel during long time, don’t found it difficult anymore, and it becomes like sitting. I could stay the 150 grand mass kneeling to not bother following it, because it involves a lot of movement, and kneeling is always considered a perfect attitude, where as standing or worse sitting, is very offensive at certain moments of the mass … ).

    • You’re right, of course. But progs aren’t known for their logic and rationality. Since everyone else is standing, they had to do the opposite, which was to kneel.

FWIW, Kap, the spoiled brat — black kid adopted & raised by a white, Christian family before getting mixed up with a Muzzie girlfriend — started the whole brouhaha by staying seated on the bench last season. That touched off a storm, but looked bad in a lazy way, and was considered disrespectful to veterans. It was thought by kneeling he could regain the high-ground by making it a principled protest against American Imperialism, but not disrespecting Those Who Serve. After all, as you noted, kneeling is an act of reverence and respect.

Of course, since ultimately the act’s motivation /was/ hatred of America, the distinction was a little too nuanced for the mass market, which is to say no one bought it.

      • Thank you for this very rational historical explanation Portlander. They could raise their fist while kneeling, but the balance would be hard to keep for such big guys. I read that average NBA player revenue is 6.5 millon. They have the best paid activity on earth. On they are 70% black people … The only white or light are the one above 7 feet (of batavic or dinaric descent) or the very agile one who are three pointers. The composition of the team comes exactly from each race aerage level, that’s white and asian arent discriminated by the NBA and black are not discriminated against by McKinsey or Golman Sachs or Google. By the way, the head of McKinsey in UK is a very dark skin black lady (some people there told me she has a 145 IQ).
