  1. Spain is the only country that fought directly and defeated both Moslems and communists- and expelled the Jews as well. For this it is considered kind of an embarrassment. The Catalans think they are French. I’m guessing the Castilians will not sit still for this.

      Who considers Spain an “embarrassment”?

In general the country barely makes headlines.

      • Liberals hated Spain for decades because Franco bested the Communists, completely snuffed them out so that they would never trouble Spain ever again.

      • Modern Spain is one of the most liberal countries. It’s more liberal than the anyplace in the British Isles. If you think the Anglo Sphere is liberal, you need to rethink again.

There’s liberalism and then there’s degeneracy.

You altright guys don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.

Liberals stopped caring about Franco decades ago after his regime ended.

Today, Spain is normally brought up by Liberals as a cool vacation spot. There’s very little invective against Spain on the Left because they don’t pay attention to it.

    • The Catalans are indeed physically more aligned with the French, with their Alpine phenotype, versus the “real” Spaniards, who are more Semitic looking, that reminds them of the subjects, whom they expelled a few hundred years ago.

      • The King is a Bourbon and his wife descends at least in part from some catalans. I wonder whether this causes any tension betwee the cron and his government.

        October 22, 2017 at 10:47 pm

      • Subconsciously, the Catalans who want to break away, feel that they are different from the Spaniards in phenotype and culture. I would not rule this theory out.

Some Catalans look Germanic, to the point of having Hunnic (Turkic-Western Asiatic) features. You’ll find it in the Frankish population, and also in Italy, when it comes to Southern Europe, but not in Spain.

    • 1. Reconquista and expelling the Muslims was a great national achievement. Unique in its own way.
      2. Expelling the Jews, who had been there since the Second Temple times, after failing to convert them, is hardly unique for European nations. What major nation hadn’t done something similar? The expulsion was an admission of Jews’ religious and national superiority and the Spanish failure to assimilate them.
      3. Franco only won because the Republican government was put under an arms embargo and had its trade hampered by the whoring western democracies, US included. The great nationalist used Moroccan troops to fight Spanish workers and peasants thus putting to shame the Spanish army, history and the country itself.

      • “The great nationalist used Moroccan troops to fight Spanish workers and peasants thus putting to shame the Spanish army, history and the country itself”.

Why? Spain also control territories that belong to the Moroccans (Muslims), and Franco got this idea of using Moroccan troops to quell resistance. Sometimes you need to think outside of the box.

      • Mate, you don’t have nationalist feeling and it’s pretty obvious. For a Moore to set his foot on Spanish soil used to be a considered a sacrilege. To have infidels fight in a civil war on your side in the name of Spanish nationalism and Catholicism is revolting. This is very simple.

      • Franco started his career as an officer in the Regulares overseeing mostly Moroccan enlisted men. All Spain’s real soldiers were part of the Army of Africa which was the Regulares initially and then the Regulares and Tercios later. It isn’t like Franco brought in mercenaries. The troops he brought in from Africa had been the shock troops of the Spanish Army for decades.

      • Yakov — Spain colonized Melilla and Ceuta, which are in Morocco, and essentially a subset of Muslims were always under the control of Spain. Basically, these Moroccan troops originated from there, and were going from one Spanish territory to the another one (Mainland Spain).

    • Nope. If there really were anything juicy in those files, they wouldn’t be declassified. And if the Kennedy assassination was the result of a government conspiracy, I’m sure nobody put it on record..

    • The FBI spent most of the 1960s trying to discredit King and failed. The only thing the FBI is hiding is their own incompetency.

      • While it’s true that both the left and the “respectable” right regard MLK as a saint who’s above reproach, he was, in reality, a big-time plagiarist and out-of-control womanizer. Of course if you dare to mention these inconvenient facts, you’ll immediately be dismissed as a hate-filled racist.

        Lewis Medlock

        October 22, 2017 at 1:05 pm

      • But those facts are pretty much irrelevant. If MLK is to be discredited, it should be on the merits of his political goals. Or ties to CPUSA, not sure if he had any, but that would count, too.

        October 22, 2017 at 4:14 pm

      • Jackie Kennedy disliked MLK intensely, to the embarrassment of many when this was disclosed in tapes released by Caroline.

        Meanwhile, everyone should read this:

It is very revealing of the derangement of the left.

      • “But those facts are pretty much irrelevant.”

I don’t think so. They demonstrate that King had some very deep character flaws that would have destroyed the reputations of other men.

He didn’t just lift a couple of paragraphs from other writers. He used tons of material without acknowledging the original sources in his doctoral thesis and in various speeches.

  6. I imagine the Catalonians will be lucky to keep their autonomy. If they went, Gallicia, and the Basque might not be far behind. And if Catalunya or whatever is so important, shouldn’t the piece that is in France be making noise as well?

    • >>shouldn’t the piece that is in France be making noise as well

This is precisely why the French do not and will not assist either the Catalans or Basques. These two peoples have to make peace with the fact that they will always be part of a Castilian dominated Spanish state, which, all things considered, is not so bad at all.

  8. OT, but NYT did a video summary of the entire paddock shooting. unlikely there were multiple people, most checks out. but definitely some oddities. (1) why did police go to 31st floor if campos had been shot and was on the 32nd floor. (2) why did police not clear the lobby, heavier presence at the hotel. time/response for police is probably the issue. (3) 5 minutes from the time they were on 31 floor to shooting stopped – how many people died in that time?

Nothing from Dkos or NeoGaf yet, but liberals on Twitter are really pissed about Bannon’s speech. A lot of demands that the media stop giving him a platform.

  10. On JFK, it sounds like the most likely story about the new documents will be that FBI/CIA had intel on Oswald and knew he was a security threat but failed to act, just like with all the intel leading up to 9/11. And the same kind of people who regard 9/11 as an inside job will consider this to be fresh evidence that JFK’s killing was an inside job.

Well, I thank for God for Vladimir Putin for sending those adorable polite people (soldiers wearing green uniforms without insignia) in Crimea, so they could allow for a referendum to join the Russian Federation. Those polite people have protect those in Crimea from the incursion of fascists from Ukraine, and allowed Crimea to be free from the jackboot of the Euromaidan thugs.

Catalonia needs polite people. Catalonia is waiting for Putin to vouchsafe some of those polite people.
