Passengers (2016)

I enjoyed watching this movie. Two attractive white people, a very interesting space ship, robots, no SJW crap, what’s not to like?

Oh, but critics HATED it, because they didn’t agree with the message, not because it’s an unenjoyable movie.

Sorry for this digression from watching current movies headed for the Oscars.

  1. Gotta keep up with tradition. Where’s your The Last Jedi review?

    • I haven’t watched Last Jedi.

      • You should, but not because it’s a good movie. It’s not. It’s garbage I hated it, but I recommend watching it for the mere stupidity of the plot and the forced SJWism.

Every male character was some kind of screw-up (Luke – grumpy hermit who gave up in life, Kylo – emotionally unstable, Hux – arrogant but inept, Poe – impulsive and “toxic masculine” hot-head, Finn – still a goofball, but this time gets bossed around by an ugly tomboy, Del Toro’s character – just an overall sleazebag). Every female character, on the other hand, was angelic and brave. Rey is somehow wiser than a Jedi Master.

      • “Sounds like a movie to wait until I can watch it for free at home.”

        Amen to that.

I have every intention of seeing “Last Jedi” but no intention of giving any money to an organization that has decided to ruin the Star Wars franchise be handing it over to a coven of bluestockings.

  2. It is insane how hot JLaw is. A great example of P surge effectively augmenting natural beauty.

    • White Supremacist Peterike thinks that JLaw is “the perfect embodiment of Aryan womanhood”. I don’t care about that stuff. She’s hot cause she’s hot. Leave the politics out of it.

      • Fortaleza84, nice exchange with the Luna guy at SlateStarCodex. (Lion, you might find Scott Alexander’s post there on Luna and the comments thereon interesting — apparently Luna is a new dating site that offers women bitcoin as payment for reading messages from men.)

      • It won’t work, because men in China, India etc. will create fake profiles of hot babes, so they can make money reading messages, which would pay better than a real job in those countries. Kind of similar to Chinese making money from “gold farming” in World of Warcraft.

        * * *

And yes, Fortaleza brought that up in the comments, and many other things, his comments are excellent.

  3. ResetEra and Libshit Twitter outraged about Trump’s ad attacking illegals. No surprise there but good to see them angry. Read it and laugh: https://www.resetera.com/threads/trump-and-gop-new-ad-about-immigrants.17843/

So how does this play out? What is the Dem endgame?

According to the media, there is little dissent within the D caucus, but on the other hand, Schumer did already lose 5 before the shutdown had even started so we’ll have to see how this plays out as time goes on.

What makes this shutdown different from the 96 and 13 ones is that this time there is not any meaningful pressure within either caucus to cave. In 96 and 13, a lot of Republican moderates wanted to cave. This time, while the GOP obviously doesn’t want a shut down, they aren’t willing to agree to amnesty to end it and I don’t see that changing as their base only becomes further entrenched.

This also gives Trump a foil in Schumer. A foil that he has been missing since after he beat Hillary. What I think you will see is the Congressional GOP getting even closer to Trump and for Flake and Graham to ultimately break with the Dems in exchange for some bullshit promise from McConnell. That gets the Republicans to 55. This should happen at around the 1 month mark.

Once McConnell can get to 50 R votes, he can credibly threaten to nuke the filibuster at which point Schumer simply has to cave.

So really I think it comes down to Graham and Flake. Once they join with the rest of the R’s, this is over. I can’t see that happening for at least a month, though.

  4. Two questions I had when watching that movie:

    1) Why did he need to court her if he was the only conscious man on the ship?

    2) Why didn’t they have kids?

    Dave Pinsen

January 20, 2018 at EST pm

    • If they had kids, who would their kids have kids with? There are 90 years left in the journey. They would have had to either condem their kids to celibacy or create a strong incentive for their kids to wake others up, just like dad did.

  7. Jennifer Lawerence is terrible and I hate her in everything she is in. She is such an entitled millenial and without the caked on layers of makeup is not that attractive. Passengers was good with Chris Pratt but JLaw is a cunt. She is a bitter, entitled feminist and she is not even 30 yet. Plus, she is one of Harvey’s girls. Lion, do you remember the fappening? when all those celebrity nudes got leaked? Apple said it came from 1 phone and they were not hacked. Harvey Weinsteins phone got hacked and that is where the JLaw nudes came from. She is nothing special.

  8. The movie’s plot is somewhat reminiscent of the Philip K. Dick short story “I Hope I Shall Arrive Soon”.

  9. Lion,

I saw “Logan” last night. You might enjoy it. It can be seen as a subtle allegory about the end of white America. It’s also about getting old — a superhero movie for grown-ups. Critics and audiences at rottentomatoes loved it.

  10. I just read the synopsis, it doesn’t even seem like there is a message, it’s just a story. But yeah, I could see how the story would offend movie critics. I guess they should have made the leading man a black guy.

    • The Chris Pratt character was “creepy” and “misogynistic” but yet he was rewarded for his bad behavior.

January 21, 2018 at EST am

      • Yes, but I don’t think the filmmakers were trying to exhort men to dominate women or to tell women they should love it. It seems they were just telling a story.

They say that every movie falls into 1 of 3 categories: A fish out of water; a stranger comes to town; and boy meets girl.

I think part of the problem here is that there were two movies which were difficult to fit together: A Twilight-Zone esque moral dilemma (fish out of water); and a Hollywood romance (boy meets girl).

  11. I just want to concur with Lion. I put this movie on with very low expectations due to the reviews and was thoroughly entertained for the duration.

Best sci fi movie I’ve seen for a while, but not a classic.

I guess critic reviews are mostly useless now unless you can determine the film offends no SJW sensibilities. But it can be hard to discern what might even offend them as the signaling spiral gets ever-wackier.

    • I don’t watch a lot of movies, but I’ll take a stab at the SJW rules:

      1. There must be at least 1 non-white in a role that is prominent and sympathetic; this character must be intelligent and competent.

      2. The female lead must be at least as intelligent and competent as the male lead. Also, she cannot be more emotional than the male lead.

      3. No serious violence can happen to the female lead, e.g. she cannot get beaten half to death, lose a body part, get raped, etc.

      4. If a male character mistreats a female character (or a white character mistreats a non-white character), it must be portrayed in an unsympathetic light.

      5. If a female character mistreats a male character (or a non-white character mistreats a white character), it cannot be portrayed in a wholly unsympathetic light.

      • And Passengers fails BIG LEAGUE on #4, and somewhat on #2 (although the woman is better at writing, the male character has practical skills that are useful on a spaceship).

For #1, they added the male space crew guy who wakes up and who is black, and he’s shown to be a good guy.

      • “For #1, they added the male space crew guy who wakes up and who is black, and he’s shown to be a good guy.”

Yeah, the producers probably thought that was enough to get by the SJW police.

“And Passengers fails BIG LEAGUE on #4,”

Yes. I do think there is a limited exception to Rule 4. If (1) it’s an action movie; and (2) there is a female villain; and (3) the male protagonist kills her quickly and painlessly; and (4) he kills a few male villains to boot.

  13. Lion is right.

IMHO there was a kind of rebirth of plot-driven romanticism in SF that year that the far-right and far-left critics hated (and the public loved), like that movie with the teen love story from Mars and the one in the Space Station infested by the protoplasmic creature.

Anything that portrays values and actually tells a story that acts like PC doesn’t exist is Verboten.
