Star Trek Discovery S01E13 “What’s Past Is Prologue”

Spoilers

Very disappointing. Lorca, the best Star Trek captain since James T. Kirk is dead. The annoying Chinese woman is back. I think the series is going to go all SJW for the final two episodes of the season.

* * *

While watching this episode, I noticed that it felt a lot more like Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers than Star Trek, and I see that other people on the web noted the same thing.

Perhaps the best thing about this episode is that it’s totally free of Klingons.

    • It will be the boldest SJW development in the Trek universe yet…Star Trek’s first transgender lead character.

And perhaps the last development in the franchise.

  2. I wonder if Lorca makes a comeback from another universe. Since they are doing this multi-verse garbage, aka Star Trek Sliders Edition, then I do not see why Lorca from another Terran Empire universe could not make his way back again. Infinite universes also means infinite Terran Empires.

It sucks, but a fitting end for the character, I think.

The annoying Chinese woman is back.

I think Michelle Yeoh rocked the role of Mirror Georgiou. I’m glad they didn’t kill her off.

  4. On the bright side, there’s still regular universe Lorca out there, so the actor can return.

I do hope mirror Lorca survived via the spore network that he was dropped off in teleporting him somewhere/somewhen. Or him using the emergency teleporter that was referenced earlier in the episode as being able to rescue Emperors at the last moment.

I loved the episode. It felt suitably epic for the culmination of the Lorca storyarc.

The interactions between Burnham and Georgiau are always great to watch. I look forward to seeing how the Emperor adopts to life among the pacifists.

It also gave a valid explanation for why spore travel can’t be used anymore. The network might be too damaged in the Alpha Quadrant due to the space pollution from the Terrans. And the Federation is out of spores.

The subtext of the episode was interesting. On its face the episode implies that MAGA is bad. But, Star Trek fans know from Deep Space 9’s mirror universe episodes exactly what happens to humanity once it adopts interplanetary multiculturalism. Lorca was right. They needed to keep making the empire glorious again.

  5. “Very disappointing. Lorca, the best Star Trek captain since James T. Kirk is dead.”

What happened to Lorca Prime? Did Mirror Lorca kill him? Or did I miss something?

Also, falling into the mycelial vortex might not mean the end of Mirror Lorca.

Does anyone know if Jason Isaacs has signed on for a second season?

“I think Michelle Yeoh rocked the role of Mirror Georgiou. I’m glad they didn’t kill her off.”

I’m sure the Federation will come to some modus vivendi with Mirror Georgiou and use her to fight the Klingons.

  7. I will add that one big problem with Discovery is the exposition. They rely heavily on it. That’s a sin many other TV shows and movies share, but in this show the exposition so damned awkward.

  8. As far as TV deaths go, Lorca got a pretty good one, so for however much I’ll miss having a psychopath as a Starfleet Captain, he had a pretty good arc. We still don’t know what happened to prime Lorca, so he may return, in the same way that Georgiou returned.

  9. All this Star Trek bullshit and u r ignoring the most significant show biz story of our times, the Woody Allen story. None of you may be fans, I wasn’t, but this is momentous.

  10. The problem with the mirror universe is that in DS9 is was more of a gag episode so the actors could have some fun being bad guys. In DS9 and ENT they also established the characters first before going to the mirror universe. Discovery did not do that. Also, why do they constantly stop the show to tell us how great Burnham is? Lorca does it, the Emperor does it. The funniest part of last night’s episode is when Burnham transports back to the Discovery and they immediately go into black alert.
    >Crazy black women who thinks she is a Vulcan is running lose
    >Black alert!
