  1. This sounds like sarcasm to me. Funny he uses dykes as an insult; I am DAR on my mother’s side.

At one point union was anti socialist? I wouldn’t be able to tell that today. The craziest liberal I know is an AFL CIO attorney (who fwiw is jewish).

    • “Funny he uses dykes as an insult”

Leftists don’t actually have any fixed principles besides anarchism, radicalism and ultimately totalitarianism. They used to mock and hate homos with the best of them. The whole homophobia and sjw thing is a newer invention. Not that many haven’t drank the kool-aid. It’s easy to fall for the flavor of the month it when one has no foundation. More specifically, as a leftwing radical his hostility towards a patriotic conservative organization dedicated to America’s founders should be self-explanatory.

The great thing about this song is his take-down of liberal hypocrisy. And he makes many of the same criticisms of liberals that we do. But he’s only angry with them because they’re not true revolutionaries like he is. Personally, I think all leftists and liberals should follow Och’s example by hanging themselves. Still, hanging is too easy and doesn’t offer the same release as bludgeoning. I hate leftists so much.

    • It was. I always thought Phil Ochs’s voice and music were complete s***, but there was a side to his personality that was refreshingly blunt. He had no sentimentality. Unfortunately, that virtue might have killed him.

Anyway, I am disappointed that Lion only just heard of this song, as it is fairly famous.

  2. He’s making fun of liberals from the Commie massmurdering scumsucker point of view. His songs are shit, he’s a sickening slime-smear, and the liberals he mocks are far, far superior to him.
That kind of phony “folk” was as disgusting as hip-hop is today. Even early Bob Dylan doesn’t suck that badly, which is saying a lot.

    • garr, sympathize does mean to suffer with. strangely this is the subject of a monologue in a film I recently watched, ‘the good catholic.’

it is easiest to sympathize with those closest to us, even if just in spirit. far more difficult to sympathize with those further from us logistically, spiritually, or pragmatically. which is to say if you can sympathize with anyone close to you, throw yourself into it, without hesitation.

      • But, Spiders, usually when you’re motivated to do something to alleviate someone else’s suffering you aren’t yourself suffering, are you? Even if you feel some kind of pain when seeing that someone else is in pain, your pain isn’t an element of your own motivation, it’s an inessential add-on, and in almost all cases you DON’T feel pain when seeing that someone else is in pain. At least, that’s how it is with me, and I’m certainly not indifferent to other people’s suffering — I’m motivated to act in ways that would alleviate their suffering.

Of course, when you’re having trouble getting something done that you want to get done, that’s frustrating, and frustration is a kind of pain. But this is certainly not the kind of pain that we’re talking about; we’re talking about a pain that would be felt in seeing that someone else is suffering, not one that would be felt in having trouble alleviating his suffering.

      • The concept of empathy is an attempt to make the subjective objective. What is nonchalance to you might be abject sorrow to me. There is no pragmatic way to quantify it. At the end of the day we just have to surmise based on extremes.

      • Spiders, I’m not “nonchalant” when I see someone suffering — I really want to make things better for him. It’s just that I’m not suffering with or “in” him. If I start suffering, this is just because I’m having trouble getting the job (of making things better for him) done.

      • Dylan was/is not a Communist. You don‘t have to like his music but his political views are a lot more nuanced than that, which is one reason he turned his back on the folkies. He also became a Christian in the 1980s.

Exactly right. It wasn’t obvious to me at first. He’s trying to goad moderate leftists into going full Communist. Why aren’t you supporting revolution? Why are you supporting war against Communists in Korea? Why don’t you like Malcolm X?

  4. you should find this interesting:

Phil Ochs, folk singer/songwriter and political activist,
was found hanged in his sister’s home in Far Rockaway, New York on April 9, 1976.
Throughout his life, Ochs was one of the most overtly political of the 1960s rock and folk
music stars. A regular attendee at anti-war, civil rights, and labor rallies, Ochs appeared
to be, at all times, an unwavering political leftist (he named his first band The Singing
Socialists). That all changed, however, and rather dramatically, in the months before his
death. Born in El Paso, Texas on December 19, 1940, Phil and his family moved
frequently during the first few years of his life. His father, Dr. Jacob Ochs, had been
drafted by the US Army and assigned to various military hospitals in New York, New
Mexico and Texas. In 1943, Dr. Ochs was shipped overseas, returning two years later
with a medical discharge. Upon his return, he was immediately institutionalized and
didn’t return to his family for another two years. During that time, he was subjected to
every ‘treatment’ imaginable, including electroshock ‘therapy.’ When he finally returned
to his family, in 1947, he was but a shell of his former self, described by Phil’s sister as
“almost like a phantom.” Beginning in the fall of 1956, Phil Ochs began attending
Staunton Military Academy, the very same institution that future ‘serial killer’/cult leader
Gary Heidnik would attend just one year after Ochs graduated. During Phil’s two years
there, a friend and fellow band member was found swinging from the end of a rope (I
probably don’t need to add here that the death was ruled a suicide). Following graduation,
Phil enrolled at Ohio State University, but not before, oddly enough, having a little
plastic surgery done to alter his appearance (doing such things, needless to say, was
rather uncommon in 1958). In early 1962, just months before his scheduled graduation,
Ochs dropped out of college to pursue a career in music. By 1966, he had released three
albums. In 1967, under the management of his brother, Michael Ochs, Phil moved out to
Los Angeles. Michael had begun working the previous year as an assistant to Barry
James, who maintained a party house at 8504 Ridpath in Laurel Canyon. In the early
1970s, with his career beginning to fade, Phil Ochs began to travel internationally,
usually accompanied by vast quantities of booze and pills. Those travels included a visit
to Chile, not long before the US-sponsored coup that toppled Salvador Allende. In early
summer of 1975, Phil Ochs’ public persona abruptly changed. Using the name John
Butler Train, Ochs proclaimed himself to be a CIA operative and presented himself as a
belligerent, right-wing thug. He told an interviewer that, “on the first day of summer
1975, Phil Ochs was murdered in the Chelsea Hotel by John Train … For the good of
societies, public and secret, he needed to be gotten rid of.” That symbolic assassination,
on the summer solstice, took place at the same hotel that Devon Wilson had flown out of
a few years earlier. One of Ochs’ biographers would later write that Phil/John “actually
believed he was a member of the CIA.” Also in those final months of his life, Ochs began
compiling curious lists, with entries that clearly were references to US biological warfare
research: “shellfish toxin, Fort Dietrich, cobra venom, Chantilly Race Track, hollow
silver dollars, New York Cornell Hospital …” Many years before Ochs’ metamorphosis,
in an interesting bit of foreshadowing, psychological warfare operative George
Estabrooks explained how US intelligence agencies could create the perfect spy: “We
start with an excellent subject … we need a man or woman who is highly intelligent and
physically tough. Then we start to develop a case of multiple personality through
hypnotism. In his normal waking state, which we will call Personality A, or PA, this
individual will become a rabid communist. He will join the party, follow the party line
and make himself as objectionable as possible to the authorities. Note that he will be
acting in good faith. He is a communist, or rather his PA is a communist and will behave
as such. Then we develop Personality B (PB), the secondary personality, the unconscious
personality, if you wish, although this is somewhat of a contradiction in terms. This
personality is rabidly American and anti-communist. It has all the information possessed
by PA, the normal personality, whereas PA does not have this advantage … My super
spy plays his role as a communist in his waking state, aggressively, consistently,
fearlessly. But his PB is a loyal American, and PB has all the memories of PA. As a loyal
American, he will not hesitate to divulge those memories.” Estabrooks never explained
what would happen if the programming were to go haywire and Personality B were to
become the conscious personality, but my guess is that such a person would be
considered a severe liability and would be treated accordingly. They might even be find
themselves swinging from the end of a rope. Phil Ochs was thirty-five at the time of his
    death

  7. His bio says he lived in Far Rockaway, NY; that both he and his father were bipolar; that his family was Jewish middle class but not religious and that his mother, surname Phin, was born in Scotland. One might surmise that the alcohol was self medicating the bipolar. I guess he’s Jewish because of dad with a mother born in Scotland in 1912 unless there’s a lot I don’t know about ethnic diversity in Scotland.

  11. It’s unusual to see a critique of liberals coming from the left, if that’s what this is.

Notice at the beginning the bit about ‘Malcolm X had it coming’. Liberals would not say that today, so I suppose back then American liberals were not yet in the thrall of identity politics and still believed the future was colourblind and post-racial. More liberal, in fact.

    prolier than thou

February 11, 2018 at EDT am

    • That was my take. The hypocrisy is basically the same: in the abstract liberals now, like then, are all about equality for blacks, Puerto Ricans, but they don’t want to live next to them or want their kids to go to school with them.

But the abstract that they claim to subscribe to has gotten farther out there. According to Ochs; Medgar Evers was good with them, but Malcolm X was clearly over the line. It’s hard to think what radical ethnic ‘freedom fighters’ would be over the line with liberals now. I guess terrorists maybe.

      trey

February 11, 2018 at EDT am

    • It isn’t really. Radicals loathe liberals.

One thing we should always be suspicious of his when so-called black conservatives invoke Malcolm X and his criticism of white liberals. It’s kind of the same thing that Phil ochs is doing.

      gothamette

February 11, 2018 at EDT pm

    • The song has some resonance because I think standard issue liberals of that time really thought the blacks appreciated them for supposedly saving them from those horrible southrons. That Malcolm failed to appreciate their beneficence would make him a legitimate object of scorn. I think liberal Jews in particular expected liberator-style appreciation for their role in the civil rights movement and were surprised by the negative view Malcolm had of them.

I watched Dirty Dancing, set in the early 60s, the other night and it is weird how much of a show the resort owner makes of his long-term black employee. Lion should review this movie.

Oh you mean that sometimes prominent Jews behave in a way that might provoke a bad response from others?

      • It’s interesting that blacks seem more likely to be antisemetic. Jews did play an active role in the civil rights movement & are rightfully proud of that.

Perhaps blacks question their motives but I’ve always felt people should be judged by their actions, not their motives.

Dinesh D’souza argued blacks are just jealous of Jews (and East Asians) because it’s tough to see other new coming minorities do so well while blacks are still at the bottom but i think they’d be doing much worse had Jews not come to America.

I suppose blacks also object to what lion would call value transference when it comes to Jewish music execs getting rich off black artists & some blame Jews for playing a role in slavery.

      • This is the last paragraph of today’s post from a major alt-right-turning-white-nationalist blogger, Zman, who posts every day and often gets over a hundred comments; the post is entitled “The Fate of the NeoCons”:

“Even so, Jews in America have faced little in the way of Antisemitism. That’s something white Americans have always celebrated. So much so that no one thought much of the emergence of Jewish triumphalism in the last decades. If that triumphalism curdles into anti-white ethnocentrism, then that could change. When you see a guy like Jonah Goldberg appropriating the title of James Burnham book for his next screed against white people, you have to suspect this is all going to end poorly.”

(“emergence of Jewish triumphalism” is a link to an Amazon ad for a book called something like “The Jewish Century” by someone with an Israeli-sounding name. “Appropriating the title of James Burnham book” is a link to some book or other; the title of Goldberg’s book is “Suicide of the West: How the Rebirth of Tribalism, Populism, Nationalism, and Identity Politics is Destroying American Democracy”)

Anyway, note Zman’s “if that triumphalism [?] curdles into anti-white ethnocentrism [???] … you have to suspect this is all going to end poorly.”

Poorly how, Zman? How do you envision it ending poorly, exactly?

This is the alt-right. This is why I want Elon Musk to take over the world as soon as possible.

A principal by the name of Patricia Catania purportedly created a hostile work environment for NAM teachers and their NAM students at a Bronx Middle School, barring the teachers from giving instruction relating to black history month. Their real gripe was that Mrs.Catania thought black instructors were incompetent when it came to teaching. To her, they were just supervisors, not real teachers.
