The NEW digital divide

Remember the old days when op-ed writers worried that poor children were being left behind because they didn’t have enough access to computers?

Well now, things are reversed. An op-ed writer frets that poor children are being left being because they spend TOO MUCH TIME using computers (including smartphones) and not enough time doing healthy activities.

Why can’t poor people ever behave the right way? It’s almost like they’re an entirely different social class and can never be reformed.

  1. It is amusing. Why, it’s almost as if SJW’s float from one flimsy notion to the next, with no regard for the meanings of words or ideas….

OT but here’s a chest-puffer for you, and guar-an-teed to freak out both the alt-right and the BDS:

    https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-02-14/most-miserable-economies-of-2018-stay-haunted-by-inflation-beast

Israel is one of the “least miserable” economies on earth – it’s above Norway & Denmark!

This, plus Gal Gadot, makes 2017-2018 a true golden age for Israel. Being Jewish, I can only say to myself: “This too shall pass. We have nowhere to go but down.”

    • The United States doesn’t seem to be a happy country by Western Standards. It ranks below Mexico. Israelis are nowhere as happy as Norwegians.

      • Israelis are quite happy. Norwegians are miserable. So are you.

      • Stats show that Norway is a happier country than Israel, which also has high gini marker (a measure of income inequality above 10).

The United States is on par with sub-saharan nations, when it comes to income inequality.

Unless you’re saying that Israelis are like Spaniards, who are happy, because there is a social network of real friends.

  2. It’s not a question of reforming the working poor…it’s a matter of virtue signaling. In decades past, the elite in Western countries cared about uplifting the poor, and not merely in a material sense…the concept of noblesse oblige was not yet just an empty phrase. Now the white working poor are only useful to the elite as a foil, a despised Other against which they can politically organize and demonstrate their moral superiority.

    • High IQ and rational individuals should embrace technology, as a tool for mother nature’s cruel and natural selection. “Poorer groups” tend to have a habit of riff-raffing with lower impulse control, and computers is that distraction from this anti-social behavior. It’s better to end your line with computer addiction than violent crime on the streets.

    • Well put.

” In decades past, the elite in Western countries cared about uplifting the poor, and not merely in a material sense”

By bringing them to Scripture. That’s dead. But I think the most sickening people aren’t SJWs. It’s the Evangelicals, who want to bring Scripture to Africa by adopting African kids. Why dont’ they preach the Gospel in Hollywood? Or Williamsburg?

  4. Black and Hispanic super-consumption of screen entertainment may partially account for decreases in crime. Most people underestimate just how many people are inside stuck to screens nowadays. If you go out in public you get an underestimate of how many people you live around. I live in an area with a lot of blacks and hispanics and I never see anyone on the street, ever. They are all inside watching tv or playing on their phone.

And pr0n probably accounts for reduced rape

    • In my experience blacks & hispanics are far more likely to loiter outside aimlessly than whites. By a vast margin (100x greater than whites.)
This doesn’t contradict the overall point being made that they are also more likely to be glued to the TV for ages either.

      • SWPLs are too busy DOING STUFF to have time to loiter.

But poors (of any race) will spend hours just hanging out doing nothing (when they are not inside playing video games or watching TV).

  5. That is a remarkable article.

Especially noteworthy are the Times comments who huff about what else do you expect! They were probably the ones calling for funding in the first place.

  6. When you are poor your life sucks and any distraction from that is a welcome relief. Going to soccer practice, then studying all night like a rich kid is not going to get you into an Ivy League school either. So why not just play video games at night? A better solution might be to make the economy more fair so people can work and get ahead. Poor people would be more likely to work and try to make some extra coin. But I think there is something fundamental to civilization that creates poverty and it can never be solved. I don’t know what though.

  7. This was imminently foreseeable. I laughed at all the bedwetting in the ’90s over the digital divide [sic] because even the average-IQ white kids I knew did nothing with their internet connections more lofty than downloading pr0n or pirated videogames, music, and movies (low rez of course, but people did it). Obviously 85 IQ swarthies will behave the same or worse.

  8. One of the mean tricks that rich people play on poor people is to change the unwritten rules once the poor people figure them out.

  9. I spent the majority of my childhood without access to television or radio. My family lived in a geographically isolated area without access to cable, radio or antenna.

I can’t say rearranging my rock collection, collecting sticks, re-reading the same books over and over and over again, thumping my heel against the hardwood floor while I listened to its echo, granted me any advantage academic or otherwise.

Not long ago I lost internet access at home so I was relegated to the public library. An hour or two before picking up my kids I ducked into the NYPL and borrowed a laptop.

It didn’t take long for my furious typing to echo off the ceiling. Out of all the laptop borrowers, and there were many, and I was the sole white person within sight, I WAS THE ONLY ONE TYPING. Everyone else was watching youtube or playing video games.

This confirms my long held hypothesis that the ‘true’ digital divide is not in terms of access, since basically everyone has access. The TRUE divide, and it will continue until ‘they’ wipe us out, is between the information gatherers and the non-information-gatherers.

Information gatherers, with access to interact, will gorge themselves on ‘food’ growing fatter and fatter.

Non information-gatherers will be indifferent while their social circles wither away. Quite frankly this is already happening and we can only await the outcome.
