Did Robert Heinlein smell BO?

In Stranger in a Strange Land, there’s a Muslim scientist, Dr. Mahmoud, whom everyone calls “Stinky.” Heinlein never tells us the reason for the nickname, but I think I know.

  1. I was reading somewhere where east or north-east asians had dry earwax and little BO, whereas euros had wet ear wax and BO. When I was in grad school the Indians and others from that area where rather smelly, and didn’t bother with deodorant. I suppose it’s a cultural habit. I do light construction and sometimes wonder why I bother in the summer when I must surely sweat it off in 30 minutes, I really should put it on after my evening shower, rather than in the morning.

    • Dude, they stink b/c of the food/spices they eat. I had a coworker recently who knew the deal and would apply extra perfume on the day after he and his wife ate a traditional paki meal. If he went a few days eating anglo food, he didn’t need to. It’s not “bo”, it’s “sweating curry”

      • It’s the cumin component in curry and kebab mixes, to be exact.

Beans with freshly ground cumin is the future of food. The average is over.

  5. Mate, this is a very weird post. I mean, even if some stink, the next generation won’t. My gym is full of Pakistanis and Bangladeshis and nobody stinks. So I don’t know where you keep finding this problem. You are obsessed.

Guidos helped me in life and I don’t have any problem with them. I hitchhiked all over Italy and everyone was nice, so I don’t know why you are having that problem either. I never had any problems in Italy. It’s a wonderful country so go visit it already. Italian is one of the most beautiful languages in the world.

    • You send him all the way to Italy? It will be nice if he gets out of NY to start with (ok, I know about the Arizona phase or wherever it was). I grew up and worked with Arabs and Jews from Arab countries, worked with all kind of sub continentals. Either I am not so sensitive or the lion work in some shitty job with very particular brand of off the boat immigrants who are smelly more because of some cultural traits than some intrinsic physiological differences.

    • “Guidos” are not representative of Italy. American guidos are mostly the children of Calabrian, Campanian and Sicilian immigrants. I.e. Southern Italy.

America often does not get the cream of the crop when it comes to immigrants. Poles and Irish in their home countries are noticeably smarter and better behaved than Polish Americans or Irish Americans.

      • Italy definitely did not send their best, but I think Italians are a lot like Mexicans in that where you put them matters a lot. Mexicans who live near blacks tend to be a lot more criminal and dysfunctional than Mexicans who move to white communities even when one controls for income. I know growing up in South Jersey I noticed a huge difference between our Italians (generally civilized and well behaved) and the Italians from North Jersey (guido Jersey shore types). The difference was that Italian’s who immigrated to South Jersey spread out in rural communities where they were taught how to become human by Swedes and English. Whereas in North Jersey the Italians came in such huge numbers that they ended up concentrating en mass in urban areas and lived among themselves with no outside influences to civilize them.

      • If you are wealthy transplant from the NYC-Tristate area, would you want to relocate to Florida or California and start family, if one decides to live in a warm clime?

Some of the gun victims from the HS in Parkland, Florida are likely descendants of Northeastern transplants who were stupid enough to start a new life in that state, with their new found wealth.

Which is why IA intermarriage rates are above 50% with IAs marrying primarily Irish, Polish, German, and English and even Jewish Americans. Because all these other ethnic groups are trying to reverse the evolutionary process by marrying into an uncivilized group.

Perez, some areas are more insular than others, but it isn’t possible to live in the U.S. and maintain a pure ethnic culture with no national influences.

  6. A lot of Muslims wear perfume to cover up their BO. I think Indians may be worse because they don’t wear deodorant, perfume, and don’t shower or wipe.

BO isn’t just a Middle Eastern or Indian thing though. A lot of European countries don’t use deodorant. The BO can be bad there, especially in the summer. It can be disconcerting when you visit in the summer and you smell lots of BO everywhere, even from the women. I’ve heard that it’s even worse in eastern Europe.

  7. It is a big problem in intercultural relationships and the main reason for a higher breakup rate, at least based on my personal experience. It is bad when a girl smells bad.

      • The more exotic the girl looks to me, the worse/weirder the smell is. Both smells seem related to each other.

  8. I know you are kidding, but I think the nickname “Stinky” is a reflection of this guy’s immersion in British middle/upper class culture, where guys give each other weird nicknames. Guys have such nicknames in P. G. Woodhouse stories, for example.

    • This article is about illegal immigration from Ukraine to Israel, the signs are of some Ukrainian militia unit. In general, 25% of the legal immigration from the former Soviet union was not Jewish, according to the law you can immigrate to Israel if one of your grandparents is a Jew. So even before this illegal Ukrainian immigration some disgruntled immigrant kids would draw swastikas here and there. But in general most of this immigration integrated quiet well into the Israeli society.

  10. Today, in Paris Pletz, I heard a conversation from two families of jewish people, one who returned bitter from Tel Avic, another one who wanted to go. The returnees – a doctor and her wife a pharmacist – noisaid Israeli were very racist, and they were called, Tsarfokaim, wich is an kind of insult. Tsarfatim are french. But this name means a bit of french jewsij (who are like ashkenarzim) , a lot of seferad or mizrahim. They are considerd vulgar, primitive, stupid, noisy, unlitterated etc. and Gvt think their children would be better working in factories, wich is unbelievable for an upper class family. So they came back ….

All people who think jewish are a “mafia” would benefit from this conversation, because those people were jewish since ever. They were from Oran. At one point, they discussed an interesting history point : the woman was from a family called Megorachim, jewish expelled from Spain. They felt European but they were badly received by the local jewish who were called Toshavim (meaning residents). So it was the other way around from Israel.

So, when you’re a minority, it’s always hard to be accepted by the majority. If you happen to be in a group more clever or more educated, and you’re in an open society, that’s ok. In all the other cases, it’s bad. That’s why people should refrain from migrating in general. Nothing good happens most of the time. And even for the succesful one, like people from Galicia in Mexico, or Indian in the USA, I’m not sure it was worth the pain of becoming rootless.

    • Speaking of Anglo Proles — the greatest Spanish Monarch to the extent of dominion possession, Charles V, who was on the verge in taking all of Europe in the 16th century, said English was a language for lower life forms.

To him, Spanish was the language of God, Italian was the language of love, French was the language of the Aristocrats, German was the language of the military, and English was unworthy of human communication, reserved for animals.

    • Some do and some don’t. I think it does depend on their diet and their hygiene habits. The less Americanized ones tend to have poorer habits.

Anyone know if this is true as far as Mexicans? I know of people who make fun of Mexican BO but I’ve never noticed it myself (not the way I notice it with East Indians).

  12. Having attended a big engineering/tech school I used to encounter gigantic masses of Indian students during summer school in the dorms. Dozens of them would get together every night in the one kitchen provided to the whole floor, taking it over and cooking gigantic community meals every night.

You could smell the curry for miles.

  13. I had an aunt and uncle (IA, of course) who always had a bit of a weird scent – just strange, not nauseating or putrid. But for years I always wondered why no one else in my family smelled like this. I figured it must be something in what they cooked. Then one day I stayed overnight at their house There was no soap visible in the bathroom so I asked my aunt for a fresh bar. She told me to look in the bathroom closet. I took out a bar of soap called :”Cashmere Bouquet” and opened it. That was the smell! Folks, please never buy this brand of soap. It’s inexpensive, but some economies aren’t worth it.
