Grew up in a religious Christian family, was homeschooled, expressed conservative beliefs in a blog from several years back, didn’t have many friends, but no one suspected him of being prone to violence.

I don’t see a clear motive. Schizoprenia maybe?

  2. Israel Keyes was also homeschooled and raised in a conservative household. HH Holmes, arguably one of this country’s worst serial killers, claimed to have had a pleasant childhood and had no explanation for his predilection. Some people simply enjoy harming and terrorizing innocent victims.

    • He’s not a serial killer though because there is no downtime between murders. Serial murders satisfy some irrepressible urge by killing people which allows them to not do it again for a period of months or year. He’s a spree killer.

  5. I don’t see a clear motive either. Hopefully they will find one. Hard to believe you could set yourself up as a bomb maker without the room mates having a clue. On a political forum on of the liberal posters expressed relief that the guy was white (whew!). Wait till he gets a load of all this Christian stuff. He’ll be demanding the government start tossing Christians into concentration camps.

  7. They’re calling him a serial bomber, but he’s really a spree bomber (serial killers have to have periods of dormancy between murders) so his psychology is probably similar to other spree killers. So beta male rage seems plausible.

That said, he probably needed to get out of Austin. I think that with a lot of these alienated Muslim guys who go aloha-snackbar, too. They do it in cities like NYC and Paris which must be infuriating places to live if you are of a Muslim disposition. The ones out in Minnesota and Michigan seem more content and compatible.

    • You might be on to something. I recently got a prank call from a guy who sounds like a Pakistani out in Queens, NY, asking me if I wanted to sell him Korans. This guy was nuts. Maybe someone spoofed my number to tease him or he wanted to play tricks on people coming from a loser who have so much time on his hands.

On the flip side of the coin, you have plenty of sheepish and dumb hipsters who have their own set of hive mind values dictated by capitalism instead of religion.

  11. Alienated beta male. Unemployed. No girlfriend. Maybe we should start referring to this as “20-teens Ennui”. There’s something demoralizing and alienating about the age we live in: the multiculturalism, the constant barrage of news and social media, radical shifts in society (anti white male propaganda), creeping censorship and totalitarianism. Something is rotten at the core of the west.

The people who can’t handle it end up short circuiting and going postal.

What a waste. All these victims have families. It’s senseless and deadening. Thanks god I have hobbies and a family.

  12. Somehow, mail bombs seems like a white conservative style of crime, unless they’re targeting a specific target of the left. I had been assuming it was a right-winger. Someone with impulse control wouldn’t have the patience to make the bombs. You’d think that would also be true with schizophrenia.

  13. In reference to Magnavox’s statement that Trump has been going through some bad weeks:

Trump’s popularity is exactly where it was 1 month ago: https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/

Dem generic ballot lead down to 6.2 (this is in line with my prediction of the Dems winning the House popular vote by 5): https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/congress-generic-ballot-polls/

I have kinda been blocking out the MSM’s Trump news. Not out of any desire to avoid it but just because it feels like it is always the same. If even I am ignoring it then I doubt the general public is paying any attention to it.

I don’t think the porn star stuff matters and even ResetEra doesn’t seem to care. The Left is really into the Mueller stuff but the general public remains indifferent.

Overall, I think things are going pretty well. I’m totally confident about 2020 but our lives will be much easier if we can hold onto both chambers in 2018.

  17. How’d he pick the people to mail the first two bombs to, though? Austin doesn’t have many black people, so the odds of it being two random hits aren’t good. And, he doesn’t seem like he’d know black people well enough to develop a personal grudge. That leaves the probability he had a general problem with black people and picked out two households he didn’t know because he wanted to bomb some black people. He probably thought society is going to hell in a handbasket and the blacks bear a lot of the blame.

    • One possibility is that he was targeting homes that were unlikely to have security cameras, although I can’t figure why he’d start mailing packages at FedEx only after his bombings became national news. His actions suggest he never intended his reign of terror to last for too long.

  18. Do we know anything about his ideology that is more recent than several years ago? Possible he became radicalized. Many Alt-Right blogs are suggesting the possibility he may have been a member of Attomwaffen, a bizarre Charles Manson worshiping cult that openly advocates random terrorism. Three of their members have committed murders in recent months and a good percentage of their members hail from Texas.

    • Depends on where she lives. I haven’t been there in a long time, but when the West Plano (TX) Walmart opened, it looked like Neiman-Marcus compared to a regular Walmart, and the parking lot could have passed for a BMW/Mercedes dealership. Nice Walmarts in good areas exist, but they’re pretty rare..

  20. As a former homeschooler, I recognize the type immediately. Most people don’t realize what a massive risk homeschooling is.

It can give your kids a better education (if done right), and prevent the hypersocialization so characteristic of left-wing thinking. It also creates profound social isolation, because even if you fit it and are approved of by your peers, you never see the world the same way as others, which is frustrating and isolating. I am very grateful that a career in math/programming has enabled me to participate in an impersonal meritocratic job, because it would be very hard for me to have a normal career.

For a homeschooled guy like this that probably isn’t the brightest, society is just immensely frustrating.

Children need to get out of the house and go to school. I think this will become common knowledge in the future and homeschooling will be seen as a dangerous fad.

I don’t agree in principle Humans didn’t evolve to go to school! Being homeschooled was the norm for all of mankind’s evolution until like 200 years ago at the earliest.

However, the way our society is currently arranged, Conditt wasn’t prepared well for the non-secular world.

      • Humans did not evolve to stay inside of a house isolated from other children and the rest of the community either.

Unstructured play on a playground or being a part of a sports team are closer to the “paleolithic principle” than homeschooling the way it is actually practiced.

      • Silly ad hoc explanations like this for why home schoolers are weird is why I dislike certain parts of the HBD-sphere.

It’s not home-schooling is objectively any better or worse than non-home-schoolers (it depends). But it’s likely that people who home-school tend to be genetically…deviant…in some way.

      • You may have read too much into my comment. I am not against homeschooling at all. It has given me and many others a great education, openness to new ideas, and an appreciation for solitude that is lacking in many.

It’s just that it’s not for everyone, particularly those who don’t manage to find their way as entrpreneurs/contractors/etc. that don’t have to depend on others as much. I would say that if it looks like your child is of middling intellectual ability, send them to school, as they will need the socialization to make it through life.

March 22, 2018 at EST pm

      • And I agree totally with Lion…homeschool is far more natural and in line with our evolutionary history. The world would be a better place if everyone could do it. The problem is that when it is a small minority of people homeschooling, the oversocialized masses can be a bit oppressive.

Social media is a symptom of oversocialization. I find no impulse at all to post things with my identity online. Conversations like these, which are anonymous and focused on rational arguments, are far preferable to posting pictures of my butt on Instagram. The instinct to publicize yourself ad nauseum comes from being too many people as child.

    • Great comments here by Lion and zz.

Humans did not evolve to stay inside of a house isolated from other children and the rest of the community either.

I would add that while I agree with this very much, my homeschooled kids (and all the homeschooled kids I know) participate regularly in “homeschool groups” and other social activities. I also agree with the “one size doesn’t fit all” viewpoint, as one can see very clearly that certain of my children need more social time than others.

In this sense you could say that since it became popular several decades ago, homeschool actually has undergone some self-correction, and homeschool families generally are more aware of the importance of social time, if that makes you feel better.

  21. AAs one who has been teaching and coaching for nearly 50 years here are my observations about kids who are homeschooled. The first wave of home schooled kids I met in the 70’s were weird kids, probably because their parents were weird. Nearly every one I knew had very religious parents, mostly evangelical conservative Christians. However, during the last ten years or there about, both the kids and their parents have become more normal. The average homeschooled kid is just a regular kid whose parents are frightened that they will be indoctrinated by the leftist teachers, not a totally unfounded fear.
