Roseanne’s hit show is canceled

It’s not something I personally watched, or was ever interested in watching, but it seemed like it was profitable for ABC.

Now canceled because of a now-deleted Twitter post where Roseanne wrote “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby=vj.” With “vj” being an abbreviation for Valerie Jarett. I think she was responding to another post.

      • I think that pic was lightened a little. Not that she’s very dark or looks black to start with. But in most pics you can tell there’s something there.

I grew up around more blacks than whites. And I’ve made a lot of observations. One is how proud light skinned mixed chicks are about having something in them besides black. And a lot of them are uppity as hell to other blacks because of it. But a lot of mixed chicks also have a chip on their shoulder about whites. Not all of them but a lot. Because they want to be white so bad and furious whites don’t consider them white. I guarantee you Jarret is one of them and hates whites. Obama is, too, which is why they’re best friends. But he’s still not like Jarrett. I’m telling you, Jarrett is a special kind of evil. I guarantee she was working her own agenda that was NOT America’s interests. I believe Roseanne is absolutely right about her.

Yes and I don’t get it. This woman looks like she has some African ancestry but is mostly white (I bet if she does a DNA test her results will be about 80-90% European) yet, like many racially-ambiguous-but-still-relatively-white-looking folks, she prefers to identify with the less accomplished and defeated side.

It reminds me of a Youtube channel I came across about a half Mexican, half Japanese man living in Japan, but he proudly identifies as Mexican. He was viciously ranting on his channel how one day, a Japanese woman asked him “Mexicans are poor…why do you prefer to identify with them?”, and basically his video was “how dare her ask him that?! He’s a proud Mexican!!”
And I rememember Jessica Alba’s dissapointment at how she’s about 72% European and only 20-something percent indigenous Mexican, when she was hoping she’d come out as mostly indigenous.

I see this pattern over and over.

  2. This was one of the main stories on the BBC news at ten tonight. Along with some black footballer who has had a gun tattoo.

The violent criminal (and Islamic convert) who shot dead two policewomen and a third person, and managed to take a cleaner hostage from a school, all whilst on day release from his prison, didn’t even get a mention.amongst the main items on the news.

Being killed by Muslims is just boring now, nothing more. If a European sees someone running towards them with a gun or a knife there would be a moment of shock, whilst their brain processed whether or not the person was a Nazi or Donald Trump, but once satisfied by their brownness they would just lay bleeding and full of holes on the pavement and shuffle through their iphones and think about what kind of coffee they would have ordered if they hadn’t died.

Good for Rosanne. It’s might only be a bt of pointless, futile racism, but at least a white person somewhere is saying something they aren’t supposed to.

  4. It was definitely a hit for ABC. First time ABC had the #1 show on TV for the week in 18 years. I always hated the show. Watched a couple of the new incarnations and my opinion hasn’t changed. It isn’t even a conservative show in the slightest other than some of the characters being pro-Trump. There is a tranny child character and another one of the grandkids is an adopted black child.

Trump should invite Roseanne to the rally tonight though. It would bring down the house and the media would completely lose their shit.

    PerezHBD

    May 29, 2018 at 5:33 PM

    • The black child on the show isn’t adopted. He’s the child of Roseanne’s son and his black wife (who is currently serving in Afghanistan).

The original show was great, as is the new one. I’m not sure why you’d write it’s “not even a conservative show” — why would you expect it to be? Roseanne’s character is not a right winger, but a Reagan/Trump Democrat type. What’s refreshing about the show is that it covers a lot of issues you don’t see on scripted shows usually: people in flyover country with crappy jobs; contractors hiring illegal aliens to save money, and the effect that has on American workers; diversity spreading everywhere via immigration — Roseanne has new Muslim neighbors, and their on food stamps; expensive healthcare; painkiller addiction; etc.

      • I only watched the original show sporadically but this new incarnation had me hooked. I didn’t realize until I saw it how much normal every day stuff just isn’t on television. Particularly Roseanne’s constant knee issues and pain, and having a handful of prescriptions to take every day and children who are not much better off than they are. Actually they are worse off.

        Mike Street Station

        May 29, 2018 at 10:33 PM

      • Guess: this is only the tip of the iceberg. Roseanne’s old show was legendary/notorious for backstage bickering that exceeded anything I’ve ever heard of in showbiz, and that’s a lot. None of it was made up. Roseanne is batshit, but brilliant.

I have zero proof of this but I think she and Wanda Sykes were butting heads and things had reached a crisis point. How the hell did Wanda Sykes get the job anyway? Some of kind of lesbian connection – Sara Gilbert was one of the producers of the show – not Roseanne!

I’ve even heard some people say that Roseanne deliberately provoked the PTB and wanted the show to be canceled. I wouldn’t put it past her but…I think that’s a bit of a stretch. I do think she deliberately was pushing Sykes’ buttons.

Black women stick together. The ABC honcho who gave the show the ax was the “broadcast president” Channing Dungey.

      • @MikeStreetStation,

Yes – Roseanne (both this & the original) dealt with stuff you don’t normally see on a TV show, which is why I watched the first few seasons of the old show and why I gave this one a chance – but isn’t that lowering the bar quite a bit? It’s pathetic that ahem, “our crowd” has to feast on these crumbs. There should be a TV show that shows a real modern family confronting the real problems of living in this America – but there isn’t, and I was willing to cut the slow a lot of slack, but the piling on of leftist tropes made me bail. The reboot was a turbo-charged version of the original which, after 6 seasons, went off the rails and turned Roseanne into (get this) a hard core left wing feminist who quoted Anais Nin. It was clear that Roseanne was reading her favorable press in The Nation (again, not kidding).

        @Dave Pinsen,

“I’m not sure why you’d write it’s “not even a conservative show” — why would you expect it to be?”

The hoopla was all about Roseanne being an alternative to standard playbook Hollywood liberalism, which in our impoverished vocabulary equates to conservatism. And it was in the small c sense – Roseanne and Dan may have been accepting of gay marriage, etc., but in their own example, they were represented as a repository of age-old truths, marriage, fidelity, etc.

That Roseanne was shown as a Trump supporter was a brave exploration of the journey that the white working class was forced into as a result of the seismic changes in America since the 80s. They pushed back against elite opinion that they were supposed to put up with endless importation of cheap labor, and endless job exportation.

Don’t you think that there’s a push back against elite imposition of sexual mores? Do you really think that a guy like Dan Conner would be so accepting of a “gender-fluid” grandson? I don’t buy it. Perhaps if the show had continued we would have seen an exploration of this, but with Wanda Sykes in charge, I have my doubts.

      • A lot of liberal elites were OUTRAGED that TV could show a Trump supporter as a sympathetic character on a TV show. It was “normalizing” Trump they said.

  7. If you have Hulu, you might want to watch the recent Roseanne episode titled “Knee Deep.”

The episode dramatizes the adverse economic impact that illegal immigration has on Dan Conner’s contracting business.

And that’s why Blue America was looking for any excuse to throw Roseanne off the air — because her show generates empathy for people who are harmed by neoliberalism.

    May 29, 2018 at 5:35 PM

    • Hulu’s already taken it off their platform. There probably is no legal way to watch the show right now.

I think it was on thin ice anyway. Even before today, the left was very pissed off at this show even existing. ABC greenlit it after the election when people were still in shock, back when smart lefties were reading “Hillbilly Elegy” and trying to figure out where they went wrong. That mood passed fast. They’re in punishment mode now, and that show was going to get canceled the moment any possible justification came in view. For them this is a culture war victory, it’s like payback for the NFL decision. “We don’t want any of that shit on our turf.” Tim Allen isn’t going to get his show and Red State markets are going to continue to be underserved because this isn’t about money, it’s about peace of mind and not having to be exposed to something that makes you feel like you’re losing ground culturally.

      • Right-wingers only have a voice in downmarket creative media. A lot of the makers of 1950s/60s television were clearly on the right side of spectrum, particularly in westerns, but they got shoved aside in the 1970s as television became more “respectable” in the Norman Lear era. Before that if you worked in television instead of movies you were a failure.

I’m a child of the ’80s and have watched some of those old Sunbow cartoons like “G.I.Joe” and “Transformers,” and it’s obvious that many of those shows’ writers voted for Reagan and had pretty sharp conservative views. You were a loser if you wrote for kiddie cartoon shows in the 1980s, but even that got respectable in the ’90s with shows like “Batman: The Animated Series” and now the field is just another SJW fiefdom.

  9. Actually, the show was losing ratings steadily. Not saying that was the reason it was canceled, but what would have happened if the show’s ratings had held steady? Or even increased?

I watched the first few shows and then bailed. It just became worse & worse. At one point they even resorted to the stock character of the snotty effeminate hotel desk clerk (which is as old as Franklin Pangborn, look him up) and I bailed.

Ben Shapiro wrote a shrewd review of the show in which he pointed out that the show with its gender-fluid kid and black granddaughter was in no way conservative.

Had a service call today. The office dispatches me to balance the air flow. Unit not working right. Or it’s too hot or it’s too cold. These people are too cold and those are too hot. Nobody is comfortable. Go fix it.

Get to the place, check out the unit. It’s a 12 ton Trane package unit, a real beauty, installed by a good company that I personally know. Go downstairs, check out the situation and it’s all very clear and here is what I tell these folks:

‘You have one unit for the floor with about 30 people. These people are very different and it’s not really possible to make all of them comfortable at the same time. First, you have males and females and the difference in comfort temperature is about 5 degrees, higher for females due to the greater water content of their bodies. Then you have various races represented here (at this point the eyes pop out and the jaws drop). The blacks like heat but don’t like cold, the whites like cold but suffer from excessive heat, the others fall somewhere in between. Then, you have diverse cultures dressing very differently in a way that would affect the temperature and humidity levels of their comfort. You have men in business suits, orthodox women in wigs and long dresses, liberal women sleeveless and in miniskirts. So I think that the diversity of the employees is the major contributing factor to why you can’t get that temperature level that would feel comfortable for everyone. At the present time science doesn’t have a solution for this problem. ‘

The bill was $600 plus tax. Lolz. People actually understood my explanation and it made sense to them. You just got to get out the message. When it comes to HBD people are more intelligent than we think.

Fat people can’t handle heat due to the insulating effects of fat as well as their higher metabolisms from overeating. Those girls in miniskirts who are feeling cold are probably thin and calorie-restricted.

One thing about weight gain is that it is a gradual process that sneaks up on you so you don’t realize how big an impact it has on what temperatures make you comfortable or uncomfortable. You start assuming it’s normal to feel very uncomfortable on an 80 degree day.

She apparently still believes in pizzagate.

In 2013 she tweeted: “susan rice is a man with big swinging ape balls”

There is something about twitter and internet discussion boards that makes people think they can post insulting remarks that they would never dare say to a persons face. If you say something like that to someones face, you might get slapped or punched, you might get asked to leave, or you might get dressed down by multiple people for your rudeness.

Yeah people think those things all the time and lots of people say those things in private or to their friends, but not to the face of the person you are trying to insult.

Decent odds they’d do nothing at all except PR. Kevin Spacey raped boys and all that happened was the show he starred in replaced him with a new headliner. The liberal executives at ABC agreed to make this show in a weak moment and have regretted it ever since, because it serves audiences —- or is perceived as serving audiences —- they don’t want to serve.

      • ” Kevin Spacey raped boys and all that happened was the show he starred in replaced him with a new headliner. ”

Yeah, but what is Roseanne without Roseanne? The show and the woman are the same, which wasn’t the case with Spacey and House of Cards.

“Regretted it” – sheer speculation. They were quite happy with the ratings, and I saw all sorts of soul-searching (yes, I know) in the trades about the ignored demographic that Roseanne uncovered.

But that demographic was turning away from the show. Read the trades, they are online.

If you can speculate, so can I. If the ratings had stayed solid, I think they might not have canceled the show. But they weren’t. They were tanking. Why? Anyone’s guess, but the show had become very very liberal, and the core demographic that made it a success bailed.

And why was the show becoming liberal? Because two left wing lesbians, Wanda Sykes and Sara Gilber, were running the show, and Roseanne was rebelling against that.

“The Roseanne revival’s ratings are continuously dropping and it just experienced its lowest ratings to date this week. What’s interesting – and worrying for the much-touted TV series – is that revival has lost nearly half the audience that tuned in to its record-breaking premiere episode.

“TV By The Numbers notes that the Roseanne revival is seeing a constant viewership drop and the latest episode seems to have placed the series at rock bottom. The Roseanne premiere episode attracted 18.44 million viewers. The latest episode, which aired on May 1, only attracted 10.42 million viewers. That’s certainly higher than what cable programs typically get, but it’s not exactly glowing for a network like ABC.”

“This marks a shockingly steep decline even allowing for the fact that show’s ratings have been dropping since the premiere. A more worrying point is that Roseanne failed to be the highest rated show in its time slot, coming in second to the latest episode of NCIS, which also won the night with 12.35 million viewers.”

      • You’re linking to articles from the pre-tweet liberal campaign to get Roseanne taken off the air. I’m well aware that liberals were looking for any plausible excuse to kill it. Meanwhile on planet earth:

        https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/tv-ratings-roseanne-finale-dips-but-dominates-abc-1114311

“TV Ratings: ‘Roseanne’ Finale Dips (but Dominates) for ABC

“Roseanne’s meteoric return to TV wrapped its first season Tuesday night, again dominating the rest of the dial for ABC.

“The ninth and final episode of the series’ 10th season averaged a 2.4 rating among adults 18-49 and 10.3 million viewers, in line with how it had performed with night-of viewers in recent weeks — if off a shade for a season low. And while that score in the key demo was enough for it to emerge as the top program of the night, NBC took an overall win with the finale of The Voice.

“Roseanne has been averaging a 5.5 rating among adults 18-49 and 19.3 million viewers with live-plus-three day lifts. With a full week of time-shifting, those numbers climb to a 6.4 rating in the key demo and 22.1 million viewers. Either way, Roseanne is the highest-rated and most-watched series of the broadcast season, eclipsing NBC’s This Is Us and CBS’ Big Bang Theory — which had been in a heated battle for top status.”

No one was cancelling this show if it weren’t for who Roseanne is and what her show was perceived to represent.

      • So the Hollywood Reporter, that known bastion of Trump-populism, was boosting Roseanne?

Yes, the show as the highest-rated, etc., But only if you take into account that monster smash breakout first two episodes. After that it was all downhill.

Nor do I deny that there was a left-liberal campaign to take her down. It’s plain as the nose on my face – but Roseanne STEPPED IN a pile of her own doo-doo.

I am consistently amazed at what a bunch of pissing whiners the boys on the alt-right are.

Just to be clear, I’m not saying it wasn’t a big hit, it was, and this is an astonishing development. Just pointing out that if it had maintained its huge ratings the show might not have been canceled, although of course I can’t say that for sure.

        JPod wrote a good article:

“ABC would have spent months trying to figure out a way to lessen the damage from the Jarrett remark with no possible guarantee she wouldn’t pop off again on Twitter. ”

It’s true. No boss will put up with this. Even for Roseanne, there are limits.

      • This is an industry where a Top 30 show is considered a major success, and networks routinely renew shows that do poorer than that. “Roseanne” was #1 for the season. Top show from first episode to last, as even the Hollywood Reporter admits. There was no performance reason for cancelling the show. If I ever time travel to Custer’s Last Stand I want you with me since you have a real knack for picking pointless hills to die on.

BTW, I thought the alt-right were obsessed with values. So Hollywood decided to go with its values rather than the bottom line and this bothers you? Sorry if I presumptively consider you a member of the alt-right.

      • “Another thing. You talk about ratings as if ratings themselves equate to money. They don’t. They equate to ad revenue – and the advertisers would have deserted Roseanne. Look it up.”

There you go again. Which is it? The ratings were taking (even though the Hollywood Reporter said the last episode was top show of the night and it was #1 for the season) or who cares what the ratings were, it’s all about what the laundry detergent companies were saying.

Well, it’s a non-dilemma. Just kill off Roseanne and center it around John Goodman’s character. “All in the Family” became “Archie Bunker’s Place” after the wife got tired of doing it. “MASH” was rebooted into “AfterMASH” when Alan Alda quit. The point is that #1 shows are dear and hard to come by and it’s without precedent for a network to kill one; under any other circumstance they would have kept it on with as few changes as necessary. Jon Goodman and Laurie Metcalf are not pariahs and it’s the easiest setup in the world to retool the show and see what advertisers were willing to pay for a series based around them. If what you care about is money you don’t walk away from a proven audience without trying to salvage it. Ultimately, this wasn’t about money.

I brought up the fact – and it is a fact – that the ratings were half what they were to begin with. Tough that your emotions have a problem with that. You’ll have to work that out for yourself.

Then I brought up the fact – and it is a fact – that ratings equate to ad revenue.

“even though the Hollywood Reporter said the last episode was top show of the night and it was #1 for the season”

It got beaten by NCIS on May 1.

It’s obvious you can’t deal with the fact that Roseanne Barr blew up her (and other people’s) career by a lack of self-control.

As far as spinning the show off, that might happen, and if it doesn’t, I would agree that it’s because Hollywood can’t deal with the issues the show brought up. But then, I didn’t think the show did, either.

        May 31, 2018 at 4:55 PM

      • Your own source says that on May 1 Roseanne “was once again the top show of Tuesday night by a wide margin in the key demo, but fell to CBS’ “NCIS” in total viewers.” It’s called the key demo because that’s the one advertisers care about.

The delayed ratings for the other broadcast have Roseanne slipping all the way from #1 to ……… #2. In a field where making the Top 30 is considered a major hit. And it was still #1 for the overall season.

You claimed the ratings had tanked, and the best you can come up with is two nights where it topped out at #2 — only one of them in the key demo advertisers pay for. Get outta here.

        Richard

      • My argument was never solely about the ratings. I simply pointed out that the star went nuts AND the ratings were going down.

I linked several times to articles that pointed out that Roseanne wasn’t the #1 show, as you claimed.

“The Roseanne revival’s ratings are continuously dropping and it just experienced its lowest ratings to date this week. Even then they were signaling about not being white trash racists, actually calling working class whites trash. In one especially horrible episode Roseanne’s son doesn’t want to be in a a school play because he doesn’t want his first kiss to be with a black girl. Roseanne goes on anti-racist morality rant and then reassures the black father that Connors are not that kind of white people. The son is then forced to kiss a black girl. The Islamic Brotherhood is not a race but a fascist anti-Jewish, anti-US, anti-rationality group purportedly
with its principals aided by Hitler himself. The ‘VJ’ woman is a White though she is proud of her Black heritage. So the racist charge is to distract from the accuracy of the fascist comparison.

So what I get from this is NOT ONE one of her ‘far-left’ defenders denies this ‘VJ’ is a fascist, the truly serious charge.

I had my first Chik-Fil-A experience yesterday! (On 42nd/right off 5th)

    Fantastic experience. I’m not exaggerating.

When you go into a new environment you often don’t know what to do. I had that experience at Fresh, and at Chopped, and it’s bewildering. Do you go to the cashier and order first? Do you go to the salad-chopping area? Etc. It can be daunting.

At CfA, they dispatch a cheerful employee who dragoons you pleasantly onto the line, at which point she (mine was a she, I pray I didn’t misgender they, or zir), records your order on a tablet. She (again, sorry for any possible misgendering) answered my questions about the various & manifold chicken sandwiches available. This is terrific. At McDonalds’ the cashiers have to answer your questions, and yes, even in a fast-food restaurant there are questions, and half of them have really poor English-language skills.

You get to the cashier and it’s all in the system. You pay. Then you go to a waiting area and wait for an employee to bring out your food.

Very pleasant, very clean, very fast. They had a clean upstairs area. They even had an electric outlet at my booth but I didn’t use it. They don’t have signs that tell you to amscray after 30 minutes. I think the whole atmosphere is discouraging to lounging. Everyone ate and left.

It started with Mel Gibson. Except Gibson was represented by one of the best agents in Hollywood who refused to drop him and because Ari Emanuel didn’t want the agent to jump to another firm and lose all that money, he waited until the guy died an then made a big show of “firing” Gibson, who was at that point only nominally still with Ari’s firm and would have been looking for a new agent anyway.. Hollywood is so unbelievably pathetic.

      May 30, 2018 at 10:26 AM

      • “Agents work for the actors, not the other way around.”

Totally wrong. Agents and actors both work for the producers. Actors have zero say in most matters. They are easily expendable.

And that’s NOT what happened with Gibson and Ari Emanuel. I’m really not gonna school you on this, but Emanuel had to get rid of Gibson because Gibson just wouldn’t shut up, and was taped using the word “n*gger” while screaming at his baby mama. This after he dumped his wife of 25 years, etc., this after he stated that said wife was going to hell because she wasn’t a Catholic, etc. Would you alt-right diaper-boys please get a clue? Read some Jordan Peterson! Take responsibility, dammit.

What’s gonna happen to the old Roseanne shows syndication? The way things work in modern unpersonning, or deplatforming, is that they become utterly toxic and everything is infected with their stink. I realize that Kramer didn’t sink Seinfeld, but the show was called Seinfeld, not Kramer.

He doesn’t work with his baby’s mother (maybe drop the nigger slang) nor his ex wife, and thus what he says to them is no one’s business. Society shouldn’t condone employment penalties for what occurs in non-violent domestic disputes. Its a bad precedent.

On the other hand, Disney World is stupidly overpriced. A family of 5 is spending like $600 per day just on tickets and after food and accommodations you are at around $1000 per day. This is a dumb financial decision for any middle class family and it doesn’t even include travel to Orlando.
