Stupid Republican blames school shootings on pornography

“Pornography, it’s available on the shelf when you walk in the grocery store. Yeah, you have to reach up to get it, but there’s pornography there,” she said. “All of this is available without parental guidance. And I think that is a big part of the root cause that we see so many young people that have mental illness get caught in these places.”

https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/politics/tn-elections/2018/05/30/diane-black-pornography-root-causes-school-shootings-tennessee-governor-race/654620002/

What century is she living in? I doubt that anyone who is high-school aged is buying pornography at a grocery store rather than watching it on the internet.

The reason for school shootings are: (1) kids who feel extremely marginalized such that they see no point in going on with life; plus (2) easy availability of guns; plus (3) a cultural meme in which shooting up a bunch of people is now seen as a way to resolve #1 above. We can blame the fakestream media for #3. If they didn’t give these stories so much coverage, the meme wouldn’t have spread.

None of the reasons above have anything to do with pornography, and in fact jerking off to porn probably has the effect of making young men less violent rather than more violent. The big drop in murders and rapes that we’ve seen since the the introduction easily available online porn is probably not a coincidence.

  1. The problem with porn isn’t that it makes you an aggressive creep; it’s that it gives you a cocoon to hide in while sucking out the motivation you have to assert yourself in life.

    • The same could also be said of video games and social media. They all are substituted for real world interactions.

      • Definitely. Video games give you a sense of adventure and accomplishment that young men crave, but can’t find all too often. Also, a great chance to use their hands in an involving but safe way.

Video games don’t make men violent: it anything, they suck out their aggressive feelings and prevent men from using that aggression, whether for good or ill.

Porn and video games have probably played a role in causing crime rates to fall, while also contributing to Millennials falling adrift in ennui.

I would say it’s possible to play video games every few months to blow off steam. In contrast, porn has a corrosive effect on the male mind, so I think video games aren’t half the vice porn is.

      • The stories are fictional, the actresses are real people.

Although, computer-generated porn with no human actors is in the near future.

      • Next you’ll tell us the news is a constructed fantasy.

  2. FWIW- I had the occasion to discuss the porno on shelves issue with an academic expert. There remain more men, mainly older, with no internet access or way to view it privately than you might think. Some use purchase or looking at the mags as a signal to hookers who hang outside the store.

It has nothing to do with young people.

    • This still seems like it’s describing a different planet.

Maybe it’s that I’m in the Bible Belt (then again, so is this candidate), but I don’t know where I’d go to buy actual physical porn other than an “adult” store. The closest one of those that I can find on Google Maps is 2 counties away, in the city center. And I guess that might be a solid place for a prostitute to hang out, but people still need to actually be buying things inside to pay the rent.

Actually, even buying a magazine other than a celebrity gossip rag is pretty challenging. I think you’d have to go to a bookstore (my county apparently has none of those; 1 county over there’s a Barnes & Noble and a Christian bookstore).

Supermarkets used to have magazine aisles, but I think those are mostly gone. All that’s left is the impulse buys in the checkout lane.

  3. From an intellectual standpoint, the reason for school shootings is because young nihilists haven’t develop the maturity to know about the deranged nature of their fellow man and react with the same nature.

    • I think they realize they themselves are deranged and amoral, and think it’s some great amazing discovery. Wow, I’m a monster! Cool!

Boys hit maximum danger at around 18 imo. Yet they can be refreshingly honest and funny at that age ..if only they could get going on some kind of career plan. The peril is seeing no future.

  6. You don’t really know whether there’s been a big reduction in rapes since online porn became available. The Rotherham case alone should show you how political correctness affects LE’s ability/willingness to report the numbers accurately. Possibly rapes by white men have been reduced by better wanking opportunities, but most rapes are committed by blacks and latinos, and the disincentives for tracking those numbers accurately have exploded right along with internet porn.

  7. She did NOT say pornography was the root cause of school shootings, She said the root cause was “deterioration of the family”. And that without a family support structure, teens turn to the Internet, violent movies and pornography. Her point was that all of those things are exacerbated by the breakdown of the family and societal norms. Not that those things caused school shootings. But The Tennessean (which is owned by the leftwing USA Today Network) saw an opportunity to muddy the waters and spin it.
    ***
A couple of key points from the article:

“I think the context from what she said is clear, that she believes the breakdown of the family and the breakdown of societal norms is a contributing factor to violence in schools,” said Chris Hartline, a spokesman for Black’s gubernatorial campaign.

“In response to mass shootings, liberals have called for banning and confiscating all guns,” says Black’s campaign website. “We must recognize mental health issues are the cause of mass gun violence, not the guns themselves.”

Most school shooters come from what seems like functional middle-class families.

      • They’ve also all been white and asian (right?). I wonder why that is.

Republicans need better representatives than this.

      • but she stupidly brought up pornography, and specifically said it’s “a big part of the root cause that we see so many young people that have mental illness …”

She brought up pornography, internet, video games, violent movies, etc. But she did NOT say they were part of the “root cause”. She was saying that they were ALL exacerbated as a result of the break down of the family. The media is deliberately misrepresenting what she said because she has an election coming up.

A lot of Americans are about to self-destruct with internet ubiquity. Social Media is dangerous, and a mishap can ruin your life for good. It’s better to not use it and become anonymous, such that most people will not know about you.

      • Who would have thought that we’d eventually be living in a latter-day Soviet America…only the secret police is not some faceless bureaucracy that descends on enemies of the state in the dead of night. No…the secret police is your friends and co-workers…even your family. And the regime doesn’t send dissidents to a gulag or a state run hospital for rehabilitation. No, the economic threat of career ruin is more than enough for the moment to keep most dissidents silenced.

However, what happens when people have nothing left to lose, as will become increasingly the case in the future. How long can the lid be kept on by the elite?
